and financial literacy skills including how to balance a checking account, how to save, and how to stick to a budget. In addition, community partners have stepped up to assist by offering to give mock interviews or teach additional skills. For instance, five participants were able to take part in a class offered to them through Rappahannock Community College’s Office of Career and Transition Services. Over a three week period and five sessions, Instructor Sherri Hill taught them basic Excel skills such as entering data into a table, sorting a list, building tables, using formulas, creating charts, and more. We believe that learning these new skills and exploring possible careers will go a long way towards helping our teenagers reach their goals and find success. ■

Teen membership at the Boys & Girls Club of the Northern Neck has grown by 66% since 2013 and we aim to provide them all

with the practical skills and knowledge they need to gain confidence in themselves and their abilities, and to learn the steps they need to take to reach their full potential. As part of that goal, since 2016 we have been implementing Youth Employment Services (YES) Academy for our teenagers. To date more than 40 Club teens have participated in the program, which is made up of two components – Career Launch and Money Matters. Studies show that exposing youth to career development and job training raises expectations and promotes self-sufficiency as adults. Additional research shows that people become better money managers when they have the chance to develop these skills early in life. Teenagers who learn money management skills and who gain early experience in the workforce are more likely to graduate from high school, to go on to post-secondary education or job training programs, and to reach financial independence as adults. The coursework is varied and includes goal setting, career exploration, job searching, how to interview, how to write a resume,

“It is our pleasure to announce that Ms. Karla Beale has been elected as BGCNN’s new Board President,” said Executive

Director Phillip Mumford. “Karla has been an energetic and vital member of our Board since 2015 and from day one has been dedicated to ensuring the well-being of our Club members and to increasing community awareness and support of our programs. Karla takes the helm from Donna Anderson, who has served on BGCNN’s board since 2009 and as board president for the past three years, leading the Club into a new era of growth. Donna will remain actively engaged as past president and member of the Club’s executive committee.” “Karla is a warm and caring person who is passionate about the important role that the Boys & Girls Club plays in our community,” said Anderson. “She is not afraid to take on daunting tasks, and has risen to meet many challenges during her time on our Board. We are truly excited that she is taking on this leading role for our Club.”

“Upon joining the board in 2015, Karla quickly agreed to act as secretary and also became chair of the Resource Development Committee. Her dedication was recognized by BGCA’s Virginia/D.C. Area Council, who awarded her the Beverly Burton New Board Member of the Year award in 2017 for her committed service and tireless efforts on behalf of BGCNN,” said Mumford. Beale, a native of Weems and a graduate of Lancaster High School, made her way out to California as a young mother where she continued her education, earning her Business Management degree at Southwestern College. She spent many years with United Way of San Diego, working her way up from an early role as an administrative assistant for the executive VP, to later becoming eBusiness Manager and Associate Director of Resource Development. “As a young, single mother, I would not have been able to earn my degree and advance with United Way had it not been for the Boys & Girls Club of Imperial Beach,” said Beale. “My son, Justin, was seven when we moved to California and joining the Boys & Girls Club was a godsend for both of us,” she added. “They provided a safe, affordable place for him to stay while I was at work or taking classes, and they provided structured activities that helped him with his schoolwork and helped build his character and his confidence.” According to Beale, her appreciation of how support from the Boys & Girls Club enabled her to continue her education and grow in her career was a significant factor in her decision to join the Board of BGCNN when she returned to Kilmarnock. “The Boys & Girls Club of the Northern Neck is committed to the positive development of our community’s youth and service to families,” said Beale. “I am honored to be in a position to help make more opportunities available and to help our Club grow as we head into the future.” ■

“Two summers ago, folks from St. Mary’s Whitechapel Episcopal Church, the Knulls from Yankee Point Marina,

and others from the River Road area of upper Lancaster County, recognized a need for families needing transportation to the Boys & Girls Club summer program, and they helped fund a summer program bus service. That initiative was so successful that this past January the Boys & Girls Club, in collaboration with Corrottoman Baptist Church, began a new transportation program to help give youth from that area the opportunity to attend our after-school program as well,” announced Executive Director Phillip Mumford . “For many families in the upper county, the distance to the Club makes it difficult to pick up their children at the end of the day, so we now have a bus service to drop off youth at area churches,” he said. “This way parents and caregivers can pick them up closer to home, rather than having to make the long drive into Kilmarnock.” A $70,000 grant from the Jesse Ball duPont Fund helped launch the initiative, made possible through a partnership between BGCNN and Corrottoman Baptist Church. Reverend David Cromer helped acquire the grant and reached out to other area churches for support. The other churches allow youth to be dropped off at their locations and provide volunteers to supervise while they wait to be picked up by family members. “I see two wonderful things happening through this partnership,” said Rev. Cromer. “First, many deserving children from upper Lancaster County will now be able to participate and benefit from the many wonderful programs and services offered through BGCNN.

Community Churches and duPont Fund Support New Bus Service for Upper County Youth

In addition, an extra benefit I have witnessed is the coming together of five churches for a common purpose. Partnerships and friendships are being forged and fostered that will endure and bring our community closer together for other service opportunities.” Participating churches are Hartswell Baptist, Queen Esther Baptist, St. Mary’s Whitechapel Episcopal and Beulah Baptist.” Each weekday the bus leaves the Club at 6 p.m. to transport members to the River Road area. According to Unit Director, Sheena Hebbons, 23 youth have taken advantage of the service so far, with more expected to participate as it continues. BGCNN is grateful to the Jessie Ball duPont Fund for awarding this grant to Corrottoman Baptist for this program, and to Corrottoman Baptist for contributing additional funding and working with our staff and volunteers to get this program off the ground. ■

We continue to feel incredibly lucky that dedicated members of the Tidewater Oyster Gardeners Association (TOGA)

work with our youth in BGCNN’s Oyster Club. Begun by TOGA member Madison Boyd back in 2013, the Oyster Club meets year-round. Summer program and afterschool program participants are able to go on field trips to Camp Kekoka in Kilmarnock, where they enjoy hands-on activities and learn about aquaculture (the rearing of aquatic plants and animals for food.) They also learn about how oysters benefit the water quality of the bay by filtering out nitrogen and phosphorous. At Camp Kekoka the children help pull floats to count strikes (when larvae adhere to shells or other hard objects to continue their life cycle,) cull and separate oysters by size, and help build the man-made oyster reef, among other fun activities. According to TOGA member Klaus Boese, “The kids get really excited to see other critters like crabs, fish and shrimp amongst the oyster reef or in the floats.” If the weather is bad during the after-school Oyster Club sessions, they will meet at the Boys & Girls Club. Here they’ve been able to dissect oysters to learn the anatomy and look at them through a microscope – sometimes even seeing an oyster heartbeat! We remain grateful to TOGA for their outreach and for continuing to teach our children all about oysters. ■

For the past decade our volunteers have been instrumental in helping us to fulfill our mission. We simply could not do all that we do without their generous contributions of time and talent. We are deeply grateful to them all!

Estate gifts are a legacy of love to our youth that can provide vital support for our Club for a long time to come.

Planned giving is a way to build a secure financial future for yourselves and your loved ones while also setting aside funds for charitable giving. Some planned giving options can also provide donors with lifelong incomes; some can enable donors to save on taxes; many can produce future charitable support without affecting a donor’s current cash flow. Planned giving can include cash, stocks, real estate, life insurance, and much more. And it can be designated as unrestricted, or can be restricted for use towards whatever we do that is most important to you. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 has changed giving parameters making it important to consult with your financial planner, but the news is not all bad. Appreciated stock and IRA charitable rollover gifts are more appealing than ever and the elimination of the federal estate tax will create additional resources and incentives for donors who wish to extend their philanthropy beyond their lifetime.

Your Legacy of Love

Darla Ellis cared deeply about youth and dedicated her 29-year career to working as a career counselor to high school students

in Charlottesville and Falls Church, Va. Although she did not have children of her own, she often said that through her work she “raised many, many wonderful children.” Ms. Ellis was able to build a significant life savings and, upon her passing, left a list of charitable organizations and causes that she wanted to support, including animal rescue groups, veterans, and scholarships for students. She also granted her close friend and executor of her estate, Mrs. Sally Bassler, with the authority to choose worthy organizations with which to share her legacy. Mrs. Bassler and her husband have owned a second home in the Northern Neck since 1988, and they have spent many years of weekends and vacations hiking, fishing and boating here with

A Donor Story their sons and friends. “It seems fitting,” she said, “to invest in the future of this community that is so dear to our hearts by investing in our youth, which is why we have decided to allocate funds from Darla’s estate to support the Boys & Girls Club of the Northern Neck.” She added, “We know that it would put a large smile on the face of my lovely friend to know that a donation from her life’s savings will be used to help young people achieve academically, athletically, artistically and personally through programs that are safe, encouraging, engaging and stimulating. And she would especially like that through this gift young people may be provided with new opportunities that they may not have experienced otherwise.” “Darla spent her life dedicated to the same values and goals as the Boys & Girls Club, helping young people to reach their full potential and become good citizens,” said Bassler. “We are very happy that this gift will be used to enrich the Club’s programs which provide care and promote success and positive growth to our community’s youth.” ■

2018 marks ten years since the Boys & Girls Club of the

Northern Neck first opened its doors to our community’s youth. Today, we are serving 450 children per year and still growing! This would not be possible without our amazing volunteers. Our volunteers act as mentors, tutors, coaches and friends. They read stories, provide art instruction, train gardeners, and even teach kindness. Some come in to help with special events, others to paint a room or organize books. We appreciate them all! Carl Failmezger is one such volunteer. He started with us back in the very beginning a decade ago by organizing a chess club. After a hiatus of a few years, he came back again two years ago to pick up where he left off. “Chess teaches so many things,” says Carl. “It teaches strategy, critical thinking

and problem solving. It also teaches patience, good sportsmanship and how to control emotions.” His advice to potential new volunteers? “Give it a try. Volunteering at the Boys & Girls Club is very rewarding, and it feels great to give back to our community by helping our kids learn new skills and gain confidence.” ■

A Decade of Dedication

If you have a desire to build brighter futures for our community’s children, please remember our Club youth when planning your estate, and consider leaving your own legacy of love to the Boys & Girls Club of the Northern Neck. ■
