It is modeled in 1:22.5 scale because, at that scale, it will fit with the two most commonly used Maine engines, the LGB Forney and the Roundhouse Engineering 2-6-2. Construction Begin construction with the floor. Use a piece of 1⁄8" ply that is 33⁄8" x 143⁄4". On one side, add the stripwood framing as per the drawing. On the other side, add the 1⁄16" planking. Now make up the 1⁄8"-ply substruc- ture. Assemble the parts according to the detail. This should just fit on the floor. Glue the 1⁄16" x 1⁄8" fascia around the top edge of the substructure. Add the roof. Cut, fit, and glue scribed wood, first to the ends, then to the sides of the car. Make the roof walk using stripwood. This should be sealed and painted. Do not glue in place until the roof has also been sealed and painted. Seal the remainder of the boxcar with clear lacquer before adding the round and flat wire details. Make the 1⁄32" x 3⁄8" door slides. Glue these in place along the edge of the roof. Now make the doors. Check that these will slide freely under the cover boards. These should be sealed like the rest of the car. Now the car can be painted. When built, the car was painted boxcar red (Krylon Red Primer), over the whole exterior (including trucks, etc.), with white numbers and letter- ing (there was a number at each end). In later years, it was painted boxcar red, with only the numbers painted white on the sides and ends. Once the car is painted, the trucks, doors, and roofwalk can be added. Any lettering can be added and the car can be given a light coat of flat varnish (except the wheels). * * * This is an online supplement to the October 2009 issue of Garden Railways magazine. Plan set #94Build a 1:22.5-scale W&Q boxcar by Ted Stinson | Wiscasset, Maine

This is a 1:22.5-scale model of the Nº 29 W&Q boxcar. It is modeled in 1:22.5 scale because, at that scale, it will fit with the two most commonly used

Maine engines, the LGB Forney and the Roundhouse Engineering 2-6-2.

ConstructionBegin construction with the floor. Use a piece of 1⁄8" ply that is 33⁄8" x 143⁄4". On one side, add the stripwood framing as per the drawing. On the other side, add the 1⁄16" planking. Now make up the 1⁄8"-ply substruc-ture.

When built, the car was painted boxcar red (Krylon Red Primer), over the whole exterior (including trucks, etc.), with white numbers and letter-ing (there was a number at each end). In later years, it was painted boxcar red, with only the numbers painted white on the sides and ends.

Once the car is painted, the trucks, doors, and roofwalk can be added. Any lettering can be added and the car can be given a light coat of flat varnish (except the wheels).
