The Bugis
are an Austronesian ethnic groupthemost numerous of the three major linguisticand ethnic groups of South Sulawesi, in the
southwestern province of Sulawesi, thirdlargest island of Indonesia.
The Austronesian ancestors of the Bugispeople settled on Sulawesi around 2500B.C.E.. It has been hypothesised that thereis "historical linguistic evidence of somelate Holocene immigration of Austronesianspeakers to South Sulawesi from Taiwan" -which means that the Bugis have "possibleultimate ancestry in South China", and thatas a result of this immigration, "there was aninfusion of an exogenous populationfrom China or Taiwan. The Bugis in 1605converted to Islam from Animism. Althoughmany Bugis live in the large port citiesof Makassar and Parepare, the majority are
farmers who grow wet rice on the lowlandplains to the north and west of the townof Maros. The name Bugis isan exonym which represents an older form
What are their lives like? The Bugis people are cultured andwell-mannered, but acknowledged alsoas aggressive warriors. In the past,Malay princes hired them as
mercenaries due to their renownedwar dances and chants. In Johortoday, many Bugis are landlords oflarge coconut and coffee plantations, while some are smallholders andfishermen. Bugis people are alsoknown to be excellent craftsmen, forexample, building houses withoutusing nails. Their architecturalinfluence is evident in some of today'sMalay houses.
Being proud of their self-image, manyBugis people are active in revivingtheir culture, language, and heritage, though many younger Bugis cannot
speak the language anymore due toassimilation into the Malay communitythrough intermarriage. However, somecustoms remain highly esteemed; forexample, those who serve should notturn their backs on those who eat, andno one should leave the dining areauntil the entire meal is finished.Inmarriages, courtship begins throughsubtle overtures by the potentialgroom's family. To woo the woman, they will send her family a tepak sirih(a gift box with food or betel nut) as asign of interest. Eating this foodmeans acceptance; otherwise, theyneed more time to consider. Once the
match is agreed upon, the girl will livein the loft area of her house topreserve her chastity until the weddingday.
The groom is blindfolded on the eve of thewedding and must find his bride among thewomen in the room. After the ceremony, hegrabs her and brings her into the bridalchamber. This signifies the warrior instinct of
the Bugis. This practice is still carried outtoday, especially among traditional families.
What are their beliefs? The Bugis were among the early converts toBuddhism, but later converted to Islam in theearly 1600s. Superstition is strong in daily life:there are many do's and don'ts associatedwith pregnancy, childbirth, eating, fishing, planting, and opening windows. For instance, the whole skeleton of the fish must beremoved and thrown away before they caneat the other side of it. Not to do so brings
bad luck. When dressing, buttons are fastenedbeginning at the bottom, but unfastened fromthe top to the bottom, signifying a properordering of events. Windows are likewiseopened with the bottom latches undone firstwhile praying to drive away evil and bad luck.
What are their needs? The Bugis have a rich cultural heritage in theregion that is under pressure to conform tothe majority Malay culture. Pray for doors ofopportunity to bless the Bugis people byhelping them preserve their unique culturedesigned by their Creator.
