It was also great news that our Junior School students’ African inspired footballs not only sold well, but won the environmental award in this section. Please see Jeenah’s report and photo later in the newsletter. SCHOOL CAPTAINS This morning I met with our School Captains as part of our ongoing commitment to include students in managing the school and gaining student feedback. What a terrific group of connected, dynamic thoughtful students they are! We had wide-ranging discussions about a range of school program and organisational issues and ideas. They talked about their perceptions of how the start of the year has gone, about the de-velopment of connections and quality relationships through classroom and camp activities. We talked a lot about the iPad program and how that has impacted on their learning. They had some great ideas about assemblies, SRC, House Points, the canteen and our upcoming Prep 2015 Information Night. AND of course we had to finish with a School Captain selfie!!

JAPAN TOUR Our group of students who will be travelling to Japan in October met their travelling companions from Kalinda on Monday. We will have a number of joint sessions with them before our trip to ensure they know each other and are prepared for this exciting event!

Office News Urgent attention is required as we have a number of absences unapproved on COMPASS, if your child has been away from school, could you log in to Compass and approve the absences. This will save us a lot of time producing letters to send home for you to approve. If you need assistance please call into the office or contact us by phone.

From early April 2014, cardholders who are required to renew their WWC check will no longer need to go to Australia Post to lodge a paper form and present their current card. From this time, cardholders will go to the WWC Check website to complete their renewal application online, and , if applying for an Employee Check, pay the fee using a credit card. Cardholders will be notified by SMS, letter or email 28 days before their WWC Check is due to expire. It is important for all cardholders to keep their contact details up to date so that they receive this important reminder. After receiving a notification, individuals continuing to do child-related work should go to My-Check on the WWC Check website and apply to renew their Check. Cardholders will be aksied to regis-ter with MyCheck if they have not already done so. Once logged in to MyCheck, cardholders will be prompted to confirm or update their personal contact and work details, complete the online form and, if applying for an Employee check, pay the no-refundable $102.70 fee.

How Persuasive….. Year 5/6 students were asked to write a persuasive text on why all students need to go to Camp Rum-bug. Lochlann O wrote a very convincing piece. We hope all students enjoyed this experience. We did as staff. All students need to go to Camp Rumbug All students need to go to Camp Rumbug so you can make new friends and have new fun experiences! Every child must go to Camp Rumbug as it’s a fun, awesome, and exciting camp with tons of fun activi-ties. There is a abseiling tower which is 12 metres high, a giant swing called the scare bear, a rope course called the adventure swing and there is also a mud pit. It’s so fun you had to get across the mud pit without getting muddy using only 3 wooden plankis. Ask yourself how is that not cool? You also didn't have to go to school and do that boring dull hard homework the teachers always give you. You also get time to see your friends. You don’t have to ring them or see them at school! Also just

in case you are scared or worried the people supervising are professionals. This camp also got students out of their comfort zone that is why so many students love it! The activities make you think as well as teaches you life sills! It also set out in a great area with lots of wild animals. I even saw a herd of wi ld deer who wonderful is that. Would you want to see the deer? The food was also wonderful, the pancakes melted in your mouth like warm butter...yum. Even the veggies tasted nice and that’s hard to to! Every child must do Camp Rumbug as it’s safe, fun and friendly. Lochlann O

Sport Trials Congratulations to all of the students who represented Warranwood at the recent District/Division sport trials. Joel W (basketball) and Jackson B (AFL) have progressed to Regional trials. To progress this far is a very good achievement as the best 80 or so players from all the nearby schools attend each trial and only a small number are selected to con-tinue through. The soccer trial is today.

Wellbeing at Warranwood It has been really rewarding to hear about and actually witness great personal achievements over the last 3 weeks with Warranwood students participating in swimming and camping programs. The opportunity for our students to extend themselves and overcome small hurdles is critical in developing as people and indeed learners in the classroom. I have been super impressed with the Year 3/4 students managing their belongings and getting dry and dressed quickly and without drama at the swimming program. Some appear out of the change area in minutes, hair wet and water drops still dripping but they are dressed and packed and happy that they have done it themselves! I have heard of sto-ries of great personal resilience from the Senior School camp with students challenging their limits and confidence to attempt things like the giant swing, rafting and ropes courses. Of course for some just being away from home and cop-ing is a huge step. The expectations we present to our children and students will define their result in the long run. This can be difficult when a young person is resistant and lacking coping and resilience skills. It is imperative that when confronted with children that are lacking resilience that we as adults persist with the expectation that they can and will succeed. Some-times we just need to adjust the goal a little to ensure a successful experience so that the young person builds upon their self-concept. Remember the little red engine? “I think I can, I think I can.” these are important words for the foun-dation of building personal resilience and coping strategies as students begin to face new and exciting life experiences. Have a look below and see if any of the approaches given can be useful to your family. Building emotionally resilient behaviour There are many ways we can help our child build emotional resilience. One very powerful way is to give behaviour

specific feedback to your child when you seem them behaving or thinking in a resilient manner. Children love to hear specifically what they are doing that is on the right track rather than just hearing generalisations such as ‘well done’ or ‘you did well’. Here are some examples of giving specific feedback for emotionally resilient behaviours: Ways to praise your child for emotionally resilient behavior: “I can see that even though you are a bit nervous, you are going to try to do it anyway” “Even though you are finding this hard, you are not getting too sad about it” “Good for you, you didn’t let yourself get too angry” “You’ve learned how not to get too worried” “You see, you can get through something that seems scary” “Even though you didn’t know how to play the new game, you didn’t worry and you kept on trying” Give lots of BSF (Behaviour Specific Feedback) Behaviour – the behaviour they are doing that shows resilience and confidence. Specific – be very specific e.g. “I like the way you went up and spoke to that girl you did not know – that was really confident!” Feedback – Verbally praise when you see it. You are giving feedback as a “resilience” coach and children need guid-ance and positive praise when they are on the right path! Subtle ways of giving feedback Children need a lot of guidance around all sorts of behaviour and this needs to be constant and consistent. Children look to adults to get feedback on their behaviour even though they may not be aware of this. The feedback they get from you is one of the most powerful ways we can encourage resilient responses to setbacks. Our feedback can be very specific as explained above, but it can also be subtle and just as powerful. If we respond in a very anxious way to small setbacks our children are having the message is clear to children: I need to be anxious about this as well – if mum or dad is worried about this, then I need to be as well. The messages we give our children through our own emotional reactions teach children how to cope with life’s difficulties and they often learn how handle difficulties by observing our own behaviour. Congratulations! The African footballs were a hit! Almost all the balls were sold at the Warrandyte Festival and they also won the envi-ronmental award. So far they have raised over $100 but there are a few balls that can still be purchased from the office at $4 each. The students will now discuss to which community group this money will be donated. Special mention and thanks goes to the parents who donated newspapers and shopping bags, turned up to the art room to help weave and gave up Sunday morning to assist the children in running the stall. Apologies to those students and parents who were unable to assist on the stall even though they sent along their reply form. The due date for forms to be returned was final as each student who worked on the stall had an individual application form submitted by a closing date. Any late replies I received were unable to be included this time. Thanks for all the support - it was a super effort from Warranwood kids and parents! Jeenah Metcalfe
