    Chapter Five

    June 10th, 1998

    Los Angeles

Buffy watched intently as Pike, Shelley and Marcus made their way into the club, slipping by the doormen with ease and disappearing within. Lost in thought, she hardly realizedRachel had spoken to her.

Hah? she asked.I said, You seem really far away.Buffy shrugged. Im right here.Rachel looked out the window. Okay.Buffy turned to face her. They seem so happy together, she said.Pike and Shelley? Rachel asked.

Buffy nodded.Rachel exhaled. Buffy, I think if any two people were made for one another, it was those

two. He knows how to treat her, she knows how to treat him-- even when they argue, they dontget all mad an shit. Rachel sat silent for a minute. I guess thats love.

I guess so, Buffy echoed hollowly. So you been there? Rachel asked.Yeah, Buffy murmured. She glanced down at her feet.Kinda still am.Whats it like? The question so surprised Buffy that she blinked twice before she could even turn her

head to stare at Rachel in disbelief.I mean it, Rachel asked her. What is being in love like? Is it like that? she asked,

gesturing to the club where the three had gone.I dunno, Buffy said. It can be. She rubbed her nose. Mostly it just hurts.Rachel frowned. Come on, she said.Thats based solely on my experience, Buffy said. Your mileage may vary.Wouldnt know, Rachel said. Ive never been in love with anybody.Buffy smiled, but it was more out of grief than happiness. I have, she whispered. Was it mostly hurt? Rachel asked her.In the end, Buffy said. But not in the beginning.Rachel stayed quiet. Its the stupidest thing sometimes. I mean, you spend the whole day thinking about him-

    - wondering what he likes, wondering if he likes the way you kiss, thinking about how he smells, wondering if hes thinking about you-- all this stupid little stuff. And then you meet him and you

dont remember any of it. You just sorta...melt. She shook her head. Least I did.Youre lucky, Rachel said softly.Buffy looked over at her, frowning slightly.Youve felt all that. Youve spent a day wondering if some guy was obsessing over you.

I call that lucky. At least you had that. She shook her head. I never did.Nobody ever mooned over you? No offense, Rachel, but dont you think thats

    stretching it a little bit?

Rachel shook her head. No. They wanted this, she gestured to her body. Not me. Atleast you had a guy who liked you for who you were. I never did.

Buffy tilted her head. You got plenty of time, she said.Thats what Shelley says, Rachel replied. And yeah, I know, but... geez, it cant be

that hard. What about guys at school? Buffy said. Anyone? She shook her head. No. The smart ones are all geeky, and the cool ones are too stupid.

Theres nobody there like... she stopped.Like? Buffy said, raising an eyebrow.Rachel looked at her, then looked down at the seat. Im gonna shut up now.Dont hold out on me, Buffy said. Im the Slayer. You dont wanna make me mad.Rachel looked up, and Buffy almost gasped as she saw Rachel blush. Now you definitely must spill, Buffy prodded.Well... dont take this the wrong way, because its not like I have the hots for him or

anything.Okay, Buffy said. And you cant say a thing, even though theres really nothing to say.

Okay, Buffy repeated. But, Rachel said. But, Buffy replied.Well, I wish there was somebody sorta like... you know...Pike.Buffy nodded her head exaggeratedly. Okay, now I know why I had to swear to join the

I have a secret squad. No, see, it isnt like that. I dont have a thing for Pike. I mean at all. Its just-- hes

smart, but hes not a geek. And hes cool, but hes nice, you know. I mean, he listens. You knowhow guys never listen?

Uh huh.Hes just... nice, thats all. Rachel sighed. I wish he had a younger brother.Hmm, Buffy said. I dont know. Pike wasnt like this when he was younger. When I

knew him.Yeah? Rachel asked.Yeah, Buffy told her. He was, well, he had this friend, Benny, and they would...She stopped. What? Rachel asked.Buffy pointed to the club; the two doormen, both well-muscled guys in tight jackets and

tailored shirts, had turned toward the door.Trouble? Rachel asked.Bad trouble, Buffy answered. Theyre vampires.Shit, Rachel spat. Lets go.She slid out of her seat and headed for the back of the van; she hesitated as Buffy merely

sat there. What? Come on, Buffy, lets go.Rachel, wait, Buffy spoke.Rachel replied, I dont have time to wait. They could be in trouble. She opened up a

footlocker and grabbed a cross, three stakes, and a super-soaker.Buffy didnt move.Well? Last call.

Buffys eyes widened. Rachel, I cant do this, she pleaded. You dont know whatyoure asking me.

Rachel nodded. Okay. But if Pike or Shelley or Marcus dies, Im takin it outta yourass. She slammed the door and ran across the street, heading for the club. Someone stepped inthe way, and Buffy saw her raise the super-soaker and let out a stream of holy water.

Steam shot up from his chest where hed been hit, and he fell to the ground screaming.Dammit, Buffy hissed.

*Pikes jaw vibrated with the impact of the punch. A short, skinny vampire with white and

blue hair had hit him hard, and he spun toward the bar, trying to keep his balance. Pike grabbedthe brass rail, but the thing jumped on him, tearing his jacket away so that it could get at hisneck.

It never saw Shelley. She kicked off her shoes and leapt, landing on the vampires back.

It snarled, clawing at her, but it couldnt gain any purchase. Shelley spun it around, and Marcusstepped up and staked it. Dust exploded outward, and Marcus turned to see if there were more.

Two figures, a man and a woman, escaped from the room and headed toward the backexit. Call Rachel! Marcus said, and he took off after them.

Someone helped Pike up, and Shelley ran over to him. What the hells goin on? the bystander asked. You dont wanna know, Shelley said as she came up to Pike. You all right? He rubbed his jaw tentatively. Gonna be a hell of a bruise. Otherwise, yeah. Come on,

he said, grabbing her by the elbow and moving her toward the back of the room.Hold it! a deep voice bellowed.Security, an identical one said, and Pike and Shelley turned to see the door men

heading toward them. They stop us, Marcus is in a two on one, Pike said. Hes toast.Shelley glanced at the hall that led to the back, and then at the two doormen. You stall

them, give me time to help Marcus. Well be back inside as soon as we can.Pike handed her a stake from his torn jacket. Go.Shelley blended into the crowd, slipping between small clusters of onlookers, heading

toward the back exit. The two bulky doormen pulled up short in front of Pike. Wheres the girl? one asked.

The other held his hand to his ear; he listened to some sort of radio. What are you guys talkin about? Pike answered in a slurred, loud voice. Some guy

with freakin blue hair just tore up my jacket!Come with us, sir, the one who had addressed him before said.

I didnt do nothin! Pike protested. It was the other guy started the whole goddamnthing.

Well find him, the doorman said. Now come on, we gotta take you to the office, fillout a report.

The other doorman spoke to the crowd, Everythings okay, folks, nothin to worryabout. Got it all under control.

The first doorman gripped Pike by the wrist. Come with us, sir. Well have this allstraightened out in no time.

But there was this other guy, Pike said. I dont see him. I think maybe hes in thebathroom. You should check the bathroom.

We will, sir, the first doorman said as he steered Pike back toward the entrance. Theycut through the crowd quickly, and by the time they had Pike out of the main room the club hadreturned to normal. They ushered Pike into the foyer and steered him toward a door markedPRIVATE. Suddenly, Rachel burst in the front door, the super-soaker in both hands.

The two doormen glanced at each other; both rushed her, their faces changing intohunting mode, the yellow eyes glowing in anticipation of the kill.

Rachel fired; a stream of water arced across the distance between them, and the firstdoorman was slammed in the face with a splash of holy water. He cried out, falling to theground, smoke rising from his sizzling features.

Shit, Pike said as he watched the vampire rolling on the ground. They were vampires? The other one hit Rachel before she could get off a second shot; she went flying,

careening across the room and landing on one of the couches in the waiting area. The gunskittered away.

Pike ran to the fallen vampire, who still howled in pain, and staked him from behind. Heburst into a sooty cloud. The other vampire fell on top of Rachel, his fangs flashing in the light as

he bit down. But his teeth hit the leather collar and slid aside. Rachel thrust her knee into hisgroin; he groaned in pain but did not release his grip.

She managed to free the cross from her pocket and pressed it to his ear, burning his fleshwhere she touched it. In agony he yanked his head back, growling at her, and slid his hands toher throat, choking her. She rapped his hand with the cross, and he howled again; she broke hisgrip and rolled out from under him. He clawed at her, but missed, tearing the upholstery on thecouch to ribbons.

Rachel somersaulted away from him and grabbed the gun; she came up in a crouch andfired, soaking his jacket with the holy water. He started to move toward her when the waterseeped through his clothing and touched his skin. He screamed as his flesh started to burn wherethe holy water ate away at it; Rachel drew a stake from her jacket pocket and threw it; it sankinto his chest, ending his misery as he erupted into a cloud of dust.

Shelley! Pike said. Out back. And Marcus. You take the outside, Ill go through theclub.

Right, Rachel said as she sprinted out the front door toward the side alley.

*Marcus hopped the fence lightly and landed on the balls of his feet. He had abandoned

    his dress shoes the second hed hit the pavement.Leather soles are not the best idea right now.He looked around, but didnt see a soul; he found himself in the alley between two other clubs, adumpster to one side of him and a Lexus to the other. The Lexus rocked back and forth slightly;

darkly tinted windows prevented Marcus from seeing inside. I hope they locked the doors, hethought as he took off down the alley, heading for the street.

Halfway there something hit him hard, knocking him over.A male vampire, his hunting face on, brushed his long braid over his shoulder. Going

somewhere? he asked, smiling. We were so hoping youd join us, a female vampire purred, flashing her teeth and

running her tongue over them. Wed love to have you for dinner sometime.Like now, the male said, crouching over Marcus body.

Why not double date? Shelley asked as she came running up. Its so much more fun.A two course meal! the male vampire laughed. No need to share. Take her, honey. The female vampire nodded. With pleasure, dear. She leapt at Shelley.Shelley raised her stake, but the female vampire swatted it aside and sent it clattering

down the alley. They fell atop one another, each trying to get a good grip on the other. The male vampire watched his companion. Your girls pretty. We might have to turn

her.Shed die first, Marcus said. They all have to, moron, the vampire said, and he leaned in to bite Marcus. Marcus

struggled against him with all his might, but the vampire proved too strong. Marcus felt the teethrake against his skin, making small furrows. His heart pumped furiously and he felt adrenalineand fear come to him. He pushed at the vampire as hard as he could, but the things steely handremained firmly clenched to his biceps. This really sucks, Marcus thought as the thing closed infor the bite.

Pike ran out of the back door of the club and saw the scuffling twenty yards away. Hetook off at a dash, heading toward Shelley and Marcus. He could hear footsteps in the alleybehind him; he hoped it was Rachel, because if it wasnt -- if it were more vampires-- he was

pretty sure someone -- or someones -- would be killed. Someone ofhis. He leapt up onto the fence, letting his momentum carry him upward, and swung a leg

over the top. From this vantage point he could see Shelley struggling with a female vampiresporting long red hair. Shell, hold on, Im comin.

Shelley punched the vampire in the ribs, slamming her fist into the undead womanstorso, a grunt of effort issuing from her as she hit. Shelley pulled her arm back, but the vampirewoman backhanded her, sending her sprawling. She hit the ground hard, and her head snappedback against the pavement. Shelleys body went limp.

Shelley! Pike yelled, and behind him he heard Rachel scream the same thing. The female vampire looked up at him, smiling, and gave him the finger. Then she dove

on top of Shelley, baring her fangs, and moved to bite her neck.Pike leapt down from the top of the fence; he landed badly and his ankle gave way. He

swore as he fell, and he turned toward Shelley. God, no, take me, please, take me, dont take her!Rachel reached the fence and shot the soaker; an arc of water sailed through the air,

splashing several feet short of Shelley and her attacker. No! she cried out in frustration as thefemale vampire started to bite.

A blur moved past her, clearing the fence in a single jump and landing perfectly. Rachelsjaw dropped as she witnessed Buffy move with a speed that rivaled the vampires. Buffy grabbedthe vampire on top of Shelley; with one hand the Slayer pulled her away from the woman andtossed her to the side. Before the vampire could get up, Buffy kicked her, sending her rolling intothe stone wall of one of the clubs that bordered this alleyway. The vampire moved into a crouch;Buffy lashed out with her leg again, kicking her in the face. The vampire snarled in pain andcame at Buffy.

Buffy grabbed her in mid-leap and tossed her to the other side of the alley. She turnedtoward Pike. Stake? she asked. Almost too surprised to move, Pike grabbed his last stake andthrew it to Buffy. She snatched it in mid-air and did two backflips, coming to her feet rightbehind Marcus and his assailant.

Say good night, Buffy said, slamming the stake home from behind. The vampiregasped and looked up at Buffy before disintegrating. Marcus flinched for a second, then realizedthe thing had vanished. A little blood stained his collar, but otherwise he looked fine. Behindyou! Marcus said, and Buffy turned to face the female vampire.

You killed Bobby! she shrieked.Buffy shrugged. You can always join him, she said. You bitch! the vampire yelled and ran at Buffy.Suit yourself, Buffy said. She braced herself for the vampires impact, but as the

undead woman reached her, the Slayer ducked low and swept with her right leg; the vampiretripped, stumbling onto the hard ground and rolling until she ended up right next to theunconscious Shelley.

No way, Buffy said, and she threw the stake as hard as she could. It sank into the vampires chest. Buffy missed the heart by a sliver, however, and the

vampire howled in pain. Shelleys brown eyes popped open; she immediately understood thesituation. She reached up and wrenched the stake to the right, and the vampire woman explodedinto ashes.

Shelley looked up at Buffy. Thank you, she said simply.Buffy shook her head. You would have done the same for me, she said.I couldnt have done the same for you, Shelley said. Buffy, I--Buffy waved her off. Talk later. Lets get out of here before the undead cavalry arrives.Shelley nodded. Good idea. She stood up and dusted herself off; nothing broken or

badly bruised, although the dress had been stained, and her head throbbed where it had collidedwith the pavement. She walked over to Pike and helped him up.

Rachel, Marcus said, climbing to his feet. You wanna bring the van around? We aintgettin Pike over that fence.

Rachel stood stock-still, staring at Buffy.Rachel! Marcus repeated.Mmmm? she asked.Hurry, Marcus advised.Mmmm, she said, her eyes flashing back to Buffy as she turned and moved down the

alley.Marcus looked over at Buffy. Thanks, he said.Buffy nodded but said nothing.Ill never escape this, she thought.Never, never, ever-goddamned-never.

*The metal chair clanged off the wall, bouncing to the floor and spinning for a moment

before coming to a stop.Six?? the Dutchman roared. We lostsix tonight??A small, timid-looking bald vampire with a goatee nodded. Bobby and Kat, Sage, the

Menchio brothers, and Cassio. The Dutchman slammed his hand on the metal table. When I find out who did this, Im

gonna bathe in their blood. Silver fangs shone in the light as he snarled. Or maybe Ill turnthem and have them work for me, to replace the members of my family that they took.

The bald vampire nodded. He opened his mouth to speak, but hesitated.Out with it, Curtis, the Dutchman said. Unless youre volunteering to be number

seven. No, Dutchman, he said. Its just that... I was sorta thinking...The Dutchman glared at him.

Curtis continued. Whoever did this, Dutchman, they were organized. This wasnt luck. One or two, maybe, thats luck. But Bobby and Kat had been a team since the twenties, and theMenchios trained under Angus.

Black Angus? the Dutchman asked.Him, Curtis answered. The Dutchman stroked his stubble-covered chin. Wasnt Angus a hunter for the Order of

Terraka?Curtis nodded. I think we might... he trailed off.The Dutchmans yellow eyes narrowed. Yes?Curtis swallowed. I think we might have a Slayer problem here.Dutchman shook his head. The Slayer is guarding the Hellmouth, you know that. Shes

not in L.A.Curtis frowned. What if she, um.... He took a deep breath. What if she left? The Dutchman chuckled. Do you really think the Slayer would leave Bloody Bill alone

at the Hellmouth?Curtis echoed, Bloody Bill?Dutchman nodded. You know, William the Bloody. When Curtis face showed no

comprehension, Dutchman added, Spike!Oh, Curtis said. The one who hangs out with the insane seeress.Dutchman smiled, showing off his silver fangs. The captivating Druscilla.Thats her, Curtis said. The Dutchman spoke, Those two are more than enough to keep the Slayer busy. I doubt

shes here. He shrugged. Spikes already killed two Slayers, the lucky bastard.I agree with your logic, Dutchman, Curtis said, but the fact is, there are six of us dead.

No normal human could do that.Dutchman nodded in agreement. Thats very true.Curtis slid his hands apart. So, what should we do?Dutchmans yellow eyes glared at him. Do?An attack like this demands a reprisal from one of your stature, Curtis said, almost

flinching as he finished. The Dutchman stroked his chin again. Youre right. He glanced at the clock. Too

close to sunrise to do anything tonight. For a moment he stood still, lost in thought.Assemble the clan, the Dutchman said after a moment. Three o clock in the big hall.

Make sure everybody shows. Ill let them know what happened, and what were going to doabout it.

Curtis nodded. Ill get to work, he said. He turned quickly and hurried out of the room. The Dutchman clasped his hands behind his back. If I can take over this city, they will

anoint me as a king. Theyll have to. If I can just solve this one problem-- find these hunters--then Los Angeles will be mine.

He closed his eyes. Soon, Dutchman, soon. Have patience. Do this right and youll have

everything you want, right within your reach.

The ocean seemed almost hypnotic in the late nighttime. Silvery moonlight glittered onthe waves; their crashing on the beach created a soothing chorus that seemed to lull the entirebeach, and everything on it, to sleep.

Except the Slayer. Buffy sat near the waterline, hugging her legs to her chest tightly, herface buried in her knees. Her thoughts jumbled together, racing from the female vampireshrieking over her partner to the way staking him had felt so natural to the sight of Shelleyunconscious on the ground and her own anger at that. You filthy bastards arent taking anotherlife if I have anything to say about it, she had thought as she saw Shelley lying there. Then shedvaulted the fence and done what fate had decreed she alone could do so well. Pikes givenenough, she thought.Hes not gonna lose Shelley. He deserves her.

Like I deserve Angel, she whispered. She hugged herself tighter and wished, just at thatmoment, that he could be there to kiss her and hold her. She knew everything else would fallaway, and there would be only his lips, only his hands, only those dark eyes. God, I miss him.

She sat there for a long time, alone with her thoughts as the night passed quietly. Aftersome time she slowly unfolded and started to get up. She stopped in surprise as she saw Rachelsitting ten feet from her, the girls dark eyes locked on her.

Rachel! Buffy exclaimed. Jesus, you startled me.

Rachel looked away. Its cool, Buffy said. Really.Rachel nodded but didnt say a word.Buffy frowned. You okay? The dark-haired girl nodded again slowly. But youve taken a vow of silence because... Buffy began.Rachel smiled, and Buffy noticed that she blushed as she had earlier that evening.Buffy raised an eyebrow. Hey, silent and mysterious is my act. She smiled. Dont

steal it. Get one of your own.Sorry, Rachel murmured.Buffy walked over to Rachel and sat down next to her. Okay, she said, I can do this.

Twenty questions, right?Rachel blinked. What?Buffy shrugged, Well, I figure youre not gonna tell me, so Ill just start guessing until

you admit to whatever it is youre trying to hide.Buffy, Rachel said, but she trailed off.Hmmm? Its kinda complicated, Rachel said, meeting her eyes.I can do complicated, Buffy said. Usually.Im not good at this sort of thing, Rachel said softly.Buffy frowned slightly. So now this is a thing? she asked.Rachel nodded.Okay, Buffy said. Well, what kinda thing?

Buffy, Rachel said; she stopped again. She took a deep breath and said, Buffy.Buffy brushed her hair out of her face. I think weve sort of established Im this Buffy

person, she said. You would be Rachel, the one not telling me whatever is on her mind.Rachel swallowed. Its just... Ive never seen anything like you.Excuse me? Buffy asked.I mean, like what you did tonight. I though only vampires could move that fast, or be

    that strong.

Buffy pointed to herself. Check it out. The Chosen One is given special powers so thatshe can do some serious damage. Otherwise it would be a really short gig.

I know, Rachel said. But I still never seen nothin like that. You were amazing.Just doin my job, Buffy said.Doin it really well. You saved Shelleys life.Buffy shrugged. Thats part of the job too-- saving people. Actually, I like that part a

little better.Buffy! Rachel said. What?Im serious about this. She folded her arms. Youre special. You have gifts. This is

important.Rachel, Buffy said, I--You have powers that none of us have, Rachel cut her off. You can kill vampires so

easily-- you were born to do it.I was chosen, Buffy said. Just a little different.Rachel shrugged. It doesnt matter. Youre supposed to be out there killing vampires.

Youre good at it. Hell, youre great at it.

Buffy said nothing. How could you even think of quitting? Rachel asked. Do you know what I would

give-- what Shelley would give-- to have that kind of power? Its not just one big unending party, believe me, Buffy told her. It has its downsides.Like? Rachel asked.Like how about every vampire in the world wants to kick your ass? Or the way you

cant get away from it no matter how hard you try? It is definitely not as much fun as it looks. But you saved lives tonight, Buffy. If you had stayed in that van, Marcus and Shelley--

and maybe Pike-- would be dead. Rachel looked out at the water. You made a huge differencetonight.

I know, Buffy said quietly.Rachel faced her, leaning forward. We need you, Buffy.Buffy looked out at the ocean. I know.Rachel sat silent for a long moment. Then she spoke, So help us.Buffy shook her head slowly.I cant, I cant ,this was a one time thing, I cant....She met Rachels dark eyes. I will.

*Darkness surrounded her. Willow-- no, not-Willow, the same figure from her dream with

the murder-- weighed a ton, and she moved slowly, as if wounded. A howl sounded out, anunearthly wail, behind them; another one answered it to their left, and two more from the right,

but all behind them. Theyre either trailing us or herding us, she thought as she steered not-Willow over a root sticking up in the path. Not-Willow moaned, and Buffy turned to look at her;her face appeared swollen and she seemed fevered. She had Willows green eyes, but her hairseemed a much lighter red, almost a blondish color. She groaned in pain.

Its not much further, Buffy said. Were almost there. Just hold on.I cant, not-Willow said. Im going to be sick. Buffy looked around at the dim woods; the howling gained on them. Even vampires

dont sound like that, she considered. What the hell are those?

Just a little longer, Buffy said, but not-Willow threw up, suddenly, violently, falling toher knees. For a moment Buffy worried that not-Willow would die right there; she made aterrible sound as she vomited, a horrible sickening choking noise.

Buffy drew her sword and waited, but nothing came; only the howling, a high-pitchedkeening that seemed to come from the trees and the very ground itself. Buffy wondered if somehow, ridiculous as it sounded, the whole forest itself plotted against them. She waved the sword in a defensive pattern, protecting not-Willow; she glanced down at her friend andimmediately saw the problem. Not-Willow was very pregnant, just about ready to give birth.Willows pregnant? Buffy wondered as her companion stopped retching. She moved to help theyoung woman, but as she neared her she felt something sharp and metallic hit her-- steel, maybe,or iron. Buffy looked down to see fingernail marks on her arm, and blood starting to well up; buther assailant had already vanished.

Now! Buffy cried out. The castle is just up ahead. If we can just get in there, thesethings cant follow us!

Not-Willow moaned; Buffy had to lift her up bodily and half carry, half drag her throughthe dimly lit woods. The shrieking stayed near them, but whatever it was seemed content toharass them, not injure them further. Buffy kept moving as fast as she could; no telling when the

creature would change its mind. She began to make out, through the trees, a castle in a state of very ill repair, as if it had

been completely abandoned. Buffy changed direction and began to head for it. The wailingincreased in urgency and volume, and something appeared in front of her on the path. It hadlong, dark matted hair, and mud and leaves covered much of its torso. Yellow eyes gleamed fromits ugly face-- or ratherherugly face; Buffy noticed the thing was female-- and it lunged at her, long claws barely missing her.

Buffy set not-Willow down and stabbed at the thing with her sword. The weapon passedright through the creature, who howled with laughter and backhanded Buffy, sending hersprawling into the brush. Buffy shook her head and got up; three of the things stood around not-Willow protectively. Begone! one of them hissed at Buffy. We guard her now!

Like hell! Buffy said, leaping up in the air and aiming a savage kick at the speaker. Her leap carried herthrough the things torso and behind her; she felt a chill as she passedunhindered through the beast, and she landed in a crouch on the other side.

You leave her alone! Buffy growled. She is the chosen one! The speaker hissed at her. She is the bearer of our hope!Buffy rolled forward and stabbed up; somehow, miraculously, the blade bit home, and the

foul woman screeched in pain as her dark blood began to dribble down the sword.Sisters! she called out, her voice a shrill wail. She fell off the sword and sank to the

ground.Buffy wasted no time; she grabbed not-Willow and carried her toward the gate on the

castle wall closest to them. For a moment the things behind her screamed and hollered; thenthey pursued her. Buffy ran as fast as she could, jumping over logs and dodging between the

trees, until she reached the gate. She set not-Willow down and pounded on the door with thepommel of her sword. Open up! Now!

One of the things hit her from behind; her forehead and nose slammed against the door, and she tasted blood as she staggered back from the gate. But just as in the other dream, Buffyfelt a dark, cold rage come over her. She turned and stabbed the beast that had hit her, piercingits heart. It slumped over and fell to the ground.

The third one kept her distance. You cant watch over her forever, she gloated. Evenyou have to sleep, warrior woman.

You touch one hair on her head, Buffy snarled, and I will hunt you down and kill youlike I killed the others. Only slower, and a lot more painfully.

The thing laughed, a sound that resembled the splashing of water on glowing-hot rocks.Your threats mean nothing to a daughter of the darkness, she said, and she contorted her faceto display a set of sharp ivory teeth. Buffy supposed it could pass for a smile. You have nopower, warrior. You just dont know it yet. But the day is coming.

Buffy gripped the sword in both hands and pointed it at the beast. Suddenly, behind theSlayer, the sound of a bolt being drawn back, and the gate creaking open, could be heard. Buffyrisked a glance over her shoulder.

Giles stood there in the doorway. He had a beard, no glasses, and wore some sort ofarmor; he too held a sword. Giles? she asked, confused.

He didnt respond, but he made the sign of the cross. His eyes widened slightly as he sawthe beast, and he regarded Buffy with suspicion.

You were fighting the banshee? he asked her. He sounded very much like Giles. They were trying to hurt my friend, Buffy told him, gesturing to not-Willow, who

moaned.Come in, Giles said, ushering them inside and slamming the gate closed.

Giles, Buffy asked, Can you tell me whats going on?The man regarded her with a raised eyebrow. You were fighting the banshee. That

makes you our friend. We fight them too. We?He sheathed his sword. I am called Goewin, he said, extending his hand. This is the

castle of the Order of the Pierced Heart.Not-Willow let out a cry of pain.Wed better see to her, Goewin-Giles said.Buffy looked down at her friend. Shes ready to give birth, she told the soldier.A loud thumping on the gate startled them both, and they turned to look at it. You take

her to the stables, Goewin-Giles told her. Ill see to that gate.Right, Buffy said, carrying not-Willow to the door of the stable. Nimbly she opened it

with an outstretched foot and stepped inside.Directly in the center of the stable there stood a black ram, his grey horns curled about

his head. All-too intelligent yellow eyes gazed up her and not-Willow, who stirred in her armsand buried her face in Buffys chest. The ram seemed to smile as Buffy knelt down and lay not-Willow on the straw.

Buffy woke up, a trickle of sweat running down her throat even in the air conditionedbedroom. What the hell was that all about?

Great, she said as she slid out of bed and stood up. Nightmares with a continuingstoryline.Justthe thing I need right now. She shook her head and stumbled into the bathroom.

*Huh? Rachel asked. You okay?Rachel blinked. Wha..?You fell asleep. She blinked and shook her head. What the hell...Late night, huh?

Who the hell..? Oh. Yeah, Jimmy, really late one. Rachel took a deep breath andsquinted at the open window. She threw her arms up and stretched. How long was I out?

Jimmys mouth moved, but nothing came out. Rachel raised an eyebrow at him andlooked down-- the bottom of her tiny shirt had inched its way almost up to her bra exposing aneven greater expanse of stomach and waistline than usual. She put her arms down and winked atJimmy. Never mind.

You were, um... He checked his watch.Breathe, Jimmy, she said. It helps. He blushed furiously.Rachel tapped a few keys on her laptop; the schools connection rate lagged behind what

she had at home, but proved speedy enough to get her work done at a reasonable pace.Whatcha checkin? he asked her.Rachel gave him a sly grin. Were you watching me while I was sleeping? He blushed again and looked away.Thats what I thought, Rachel said as she resumed typing.Well, Rachel, I mean....She fixed him with a bemused stare.

You...you are pretty easy to watch...She raised her eyebrow again. A compliment. Youre improving, Jimmy. Pretty soon

youll get a full sentence out.He smiled, and Rachel turned back to her work.Seven minutes, he said.Rachel continued typing. What? You were asleep for seven minutes, he said.Rachel smirked. Thanks. That was a full sentence, he added. She stopped typing and looked up at him. Is the end of school making you bold, Jimmy

boy?He tried to shrug casually, but it looked more like hed popped his shoulder out of its

socket. It is gonna be a long... summer, he said.Rachel nodded. Yep. She clicked on the trackpad.Rachel, he asked.Mmmm? Why are you... like... always looking up murders and stuff? She stopped and turned to face him. You noticed, huh?He nodded eagerly. She reached up and touched the end of his nose with her finger. Nothin gets by you,

Jimmy, she purred. She turned and continued typing. It took him a few minutes before hed composed himself enough to say, Thats not an

    answer.

You noticed that too, huh? she agreed, clicking on a link to a different web site.Another few minutes passed before he managed, So, you gonna tell me?Rachel frowned as she scanned the screen; she clicked back to the previous site and typed

in another search request. She turned to face Jimmy again. Jimmy, you know how you have this... vision of me, for

the lack of a better phrase? He nodded yes.

Lets not spoil it with details like the truth, or things you dont need to know. We getalong fine the way things are, dont you think?

He looked crestfallen. Youre not gonna tell me?No, Jimmy, Im not gonna tell you.Silence took over the room as Rachel checked a few more sites, but each search proved

an exercise in futility. She found nothing on the topic she looked up. Dammit, dammit, wheresall the info on this...

Rachel, would you go out with me? he asked her suddenly. What? What?Jimmy took a deep breath. Would you go out with me? On a date?Rachel looked at him; his anxious face brimmed with a great deal of hope and not a little

desire. His eyes shone and he stared directly at her, drinking her in.She gave him a smile. Jimmy, she said. Jimmy. She reached up and grabbed his shirt collar and pulled him close; she kissed him briefly

and let him go.I cant go out with you, Jimmy. I dont date anyone. Its a long story, and you dont

need the details. But I give you a lotta points for askin.Jimmy pouted. Okay, he muttered.Hey, she said, lifting his chin so that their eyes met.I think it is too sweet that you asked me, though. Really. She kissed him on the cheek.

Youre a sweetheart, Jimmy, you really are.Okay, he said, smiling a little.I tell you what, Rachel said, clicking back to the search engine page. Whats your

addy? His eyebrows popped up. Um, he said, Jimyjimy. He smiled anxiously. At aol dot

com.Gotcha, Rachel said. Im gonna drop you a note so we can chat over the summer. If

you give my address to anyone, Ill do worse than kill you.No one, he breathed. I swear, Rachel. She faced him and gave him a look designed to reduce him to a puddle; by the way his

jaw hung open, Rachel knew it worked. I trust you, Jimmy.Outside, a familiar horn sounded.Thats my ride, Rachel said. Gotta run. She signed off and disconnected the laptop.Rachel, Jimmy ventured as she put away her computer equipment.Hmm? she asked. He grabbed her hand and held it between his. Thanks. She reached up and ruffled his hair. No biggie, Jimmy. Ill talk to ya soon.He beamed long after she had gotten in the van and driven off with Shelley.

*Nothing, Rachel said. Nothing in the papers, nothing in the police files, nothing.

Nobody reported our little soiree last night.Shelley frowned. Why would they hide it?Pike ticked off fingers. One, no bodies to report. No corpses, no homicide investigation.

Two, we left the scene before anyone could ID us. Three--

The club is owned by vampires and they want it kept quiet so it doesnt cause a panicamong the undead population, Buffy spoke.

Wont they all find out anyway? Rachel asked. Its not like you can hide six deaths.Buffy shrugged. I dont know that much about vampire society, she told them. That

was Angels area of expertise. But I do know that if they have a leader, hes gonna be in hotwater after that little show. She folded her arms. Even on a really good day, I hardly ever tookdown six.

So theyre gonna be a little upset, Pike said.We should expect a response, Shelley added, and Buffy nodded.Oh yeah. We just pissed off whoever leads this chapter of the reflectionally challenged.

Big time.So whats your suggestion? Pike asked Buffy. Its your city, she replied. Im just the hired gun.Shelley smiled. Our incredibly talented secret weapon.Buffy took a slight bow. At your service.I say we hit em again, Rachel ventured. Thats the last thing theyd be expecting. You would say that, Shelley told her.

Rachel made a face at her.Its risky, Pike said, but they wont be expecting it. Any time you can catch them off

guard, thats a good thing.Buffy nodded. True. Plus, one or two more big nights like that and youll see things start

to quiet down.Theyll be scared, Shelley agreed. Less bold, more careful.Theyll start to avoid us, Rachel spoke.Theyll start fighting amongst themselves, Pike said, looking over at Buffy.

Whoevers in charge will have to fight for his status-- even if hes a king.Bingo, Buffy said. If we can set them against one another, theyll forget about us.

Well, pretty much. They still have to eat.But their focus will be on battle and revenge instead of slaughter, Shelley said.Yep, Buffy responded.Rachel smiled, showing almost all of her teeth. Arent you guys glad I talked her into

slaying again?Shelley threw a pillow at her, and Buffy tapped her playfully on the shoulder. Rachel

laughed. It wasnt just you, Rachel, Buffy said. It was all of you. All three of you reminded me

of who I am, and what I have to do. I cant walk away. Ive tried before, and I always comeback. She looked at Pike. You know that.

He smiled. Youre the guy, he said. Youre the chosen guy, Buffy. For good or bad.I say good, Shelley said.Buffy grinned. Well, it was good last night, anyway, she admitted.

It was good for me, too, Rachel chimed in, laughing, and they all tossed the little throwpillows at her.

Youre sure about staying in tonight? Shelley asked.Well, we dont have to stay in, Pike said, sliding an arm around her.Buffy answered Shelley, Whatever we do, we shouldnt hunt tonight. Soon, maybe, but

not right now. If the vampires are out, theyll be out in number. They usually are after a major killing, Pike agreed. And given their fascination with vengeance, Shelley added, theyll be violent.

Moreso than usual, Buffy put in.Rachel asked, So wouldnt this be the time to put some major screws to them? Really

knock them on their ass? You know, the whole, hit em while theyre hurt kinda thing?Pike shook his head no. Bad idea.Rachel, Shelley said, much as I like killing vampires, there are just certain times when

you have to lay low. Brown eyes flashed over at Buffy. I dont like it either, really. Butoverconfidence isnt a sin we can commit more than once. If we start getting cocky...

Well, too cocky, anyway, Buffy said, and they looked at her. What? A little cockiness is good for you sometimes.Try telling that to the vampires we took out last night, Shelley said, smiling.Buffy grinned. Well, its good forus, she clarified. Its lethal for them.Amen, Rachel said.So how long you figure we should take a break? Pike asked. Just tonight? A coupla

days?A week? Rachel offered.Buffy shifted in her chair. Guys, we need this break too. I mean, okay, nobody got badly

hurt, and its a good idea to lay low to avoid retaliation. But we should take some time and have

some fun, you know? They stared at her.My friends in Sunnydale taught me that. All slaying and no playing makes a Scooby

gang burn out faster. You dont want that.Rachel tilted her head. Is this a smell the roses speech?Buffy shrugged. Call it what you want. Its the right thing to do.No argument from me. Rachel looked at her friends. Shelley, Pike, whaddaya say?

Time to have some real fun?Pike met Shelleys eyes.Just last night I was saying how nice it would be. You think?

he asked her.She slid her arms around his shoulders. I could be convinced, she murmured.Ack, Rachel said as they embraced. Cue the Celine Dion.I dont know, Buffy thought as they kissed each other lightly on the lips. I think its kinda

    sweet.

*We have a winnah! the carny announced, actually managing to inject some enthusiasm

into his voice. Whatll it be, little lady?Buffy smiled wide. Ill take the grey teddy bear, she said. The carny matched her grin

and handed her the medium sized grey bear. Buffy rubbed her nose against the soft fur andpressed the bear to her.

Nice goin, Buff! Rachel said, patting her on the back.Buffy smiled. Thanks.Yeah, Pike teased her. Nobody but you could have knocked those bottles over.Buffy looked over at him.Pike smiled. Youre at least twice as strong as any other girl. Or guy.Buffy made a muscle with her bicep. Being the Slayer does have its fringe benefits.

She chuckled, and the others joined her. Shelley grabbed Pikes arm and said, Roller coaster!Pike waved to Buffy and Rachel as Shelley dragged him off.

Exit the lovebirds, stage left, Rachel said.Jealousy nipping at our heels? Buffy asked her.Rachel pouted. Not in specific. She looked over at Buffy. Im not envious of Shelly

for having Pike, if thats what youre asking.Buffy nodded. So youre just randomly feeling these jealousy pangs and theyre not

directed at anyone? Major drag.Rachel looked over at Buffy. Its more...Im jealous because I dont have anyone, you

know? Not that it isnt Pike, just that it isnt anyone.Buffy nodded. Trust me, I know the feeling.Rachel asked, Yeah?Buffys eyes were far away as she replied, Yeah.Great, Rachel said. This is supposed to be our big fun night out. She shook her head

in disgust. I cant believe Ive forgotten how to have enjoy myself.Buffy ventured, I remember you telling me that enjoying yourself too much is what got

you here in the first place.Rachel sighed. Yeah, I know.Buffy offered her the teddy bear. Here, she said.

What? Its a well known fact that teddy bears can cheer you up.Rachel gave her a skeptical glance.Okay, its apparently not well known by you. Just try it.Rachel half-heartedly took the bear and gave it a hug.Nothing, she said.Give it a real hug, Buffy told her.Rachel squeezed the bear tightly, holding it close to her.Well? Its okay, she told Buffy, handing her the bear. Not like holding a guy.Buffy tilted her head. No, but I havent seen the stand where you can win a guy by

knocking over some weighted milk bottles. If you see it, let me know, cause I could kinda useone too.

They shared a look, and Rachel smiled. Cute.Buffy pointed to the bear. You want one?Rachel shook her head. I dunno...Come on, Buffy said. That guy was too smug anyway. And besides, the bear could

keep you company in your room.Rachel gave her a look.Assuming you can find him.Rachel smiled. Okay, Buffy. Lets get me one too. They headed back toward the vendor. As soon as he saw Buffy coming, he stopped his

hawking and moved down to the end of his stall to meet her.

You already won one, he said, gesturing to the bear. One to a customer.Ihave one, Buffy said. She gestured to Rachel. She doesnt. The vendor folded his arms. Then let her throw the ball.Buffy leaned forward, her face close to his. Im gonna pay you two bucks for three shots

at the bottles, and Im gonna knock them over. You dont let me play, Im gonna bring down thecops on you so fast for cheating youll be in jail before you can say sorry.

Besides, Rachel added, if she wins, people wont think your game is rigged. Weredoing you a favor.

Dark eyes stared daggers at the two girls, but he held his hand out. Two dollars to play,he growled.

Buffy handed him two wadded up dollar bills and grabbed the three softballs. She movedto the same spot she had thrown from before and launched the first pitch. Bottles tumbled overwith a clanking noise, and a few onlookers cheered.

Thats one, the carny said. Still gotta knock over another set to win the prize.Buffys threw the second ball so hard that one of the bottles actually broke as it hit the

ground. The carny frowned at her, glaring.Buffy handed him the third softball, smiled sweetly, and said, Ill take another grey one,

please.Grey it is for the lucky young lady with the wonderful arm. Anyone else care to try their

luck at this game of skill? 3 throws, 2 dollars. Anyone?Buffy gave Rachel the bear. Thanks, she said.Just dont lose him, Buffy said. Id have to resort to violence to get you another one.Rachel looked over her shoulder and noticed the vendor scowling at them as they walked

away. You say that like its a bad thing, she told Buffy.Yeah, well, Buffy said. Some guys you gotta rough up a little. But they usually have it

coming.Rachel smiled, rubbing her nose against the bear as she had seen Buffy do. This is soft,

she said.See? Buffy asked. I knew youd get the hang of that snuggling up to the bear thing. Its still not the same as hugging a guy, Rachel said.Yeah, Buffy agreed. Most guys arent this fuzzy and cute. They laughed as they made their way down the boardwalk, unaware that the carny vendor

watched them until they had passed out of his line of sight.

*Shelley stretched, extending her slim frame and shaking her head back and forth in an

effort to wake up a little. It was still dark-- the clock read 2:37-- but nature had interrupted asound sleep to give her a rather urgent call. Shelley looked down at Pikes slumbering body; sheleaned over and kissed him on the back. She thought about settling down next to him, but herbladder sent her another distress signal. She sighed and slid out of the bed, looking back at Pike, and went into the bathroom.

When she came out she felt a little hungry, so she grabbed one of Pikes shirts andslipped it on; she headed down to the kitchen silently, heading for the fridge. Hope theres stillsome Cherry Garcia left, she thought as she opened the freezer door. She smiled and pulled out

the container. Ah, Cherry, the post-coital snack of choice. She grabbed a spoon and went outonto the deck.

Hey, Buffy offered, surprising Shelley so greatly that she nearly dropped the ice cream. What are you doing up? Shelley asked.Buffy smiled. I could ask you the same thing.Shelley sat down. Just a little late night snack. You?Just thinkin, Buffy replied.

Shelley dipped the spoon into the ice cream and took a bite, her eyes closing as shesavored the sweet cherry and chocolate. What about? she asked after she swallowed the icecream.

Just stuff. You guys. My friends in Sunnydale. Angel. My mom.Shelley nodded. You miss them?Buffy looked out at the ocean. A little. Both of them remained quiet.Buffy turned and said, Okay, a lot.Shelley spoke, Much as I hate to say this, you could go back, you know.I know, Buffy answered her. But for some reason, this just feels... right, somehow,

being here with you guys, you know, hanging out, hunting vampires, winning teddy bears...Shelley said, I dont think Rachel put hers down for two seconds.Buffy smiled. They did kinda seem to be surgically attached.Shelley reached over and touched Buffy on the shoulder. Thank you, she said.Thank me? Buffy asked. For what? For tonight, Shelley said.Okay, time to rewind, Buffy said. I must have missed the early part of this

conversation-- the part where you tell me what youre talking about.Shelley smiled. Your helping us last night not only saved some lives, but it gave us a

break. We dont get many of those. I cant even remember the last time we went out and just hadfun. She dug out another spoonful of ice cream. You were right, she told Buffy, holding thespoon in mid air. We needed this. I needed this. I havent cut loose like this since...since....well,since.

Buffy nodded. Yeah, it was fun, wasnt it?Shelley nodded, chewing on the ice cream. Makes you wonder if life could be like this

all the time.Maybe when there are no more vampires, Buffy said. Maybe then we could do this

every night.Shelley met Buffys eyes. I also have to thank you for Rachel, she said.Buffy tilted her head and raised an eyebrow.Shelly took a deep breath. I think a lot of the time Rachel sort of feels left out with Pike

and I. I think shes lonely a lot. So having you with her tonight to hang with, you know... I thinkthat was really good for her. Ive never heard her laugh like that.

You really care about her, dont you? Buffy asked.Shelley nodded. I love her like a sister. Sometimes I know I mom her too much, but... I

dunno, maybe Im making up for losing Carol. My sister. She looked out at the ocean. Buttaking care of Rachel is important to me. She shook her head. Sometimes I forget shes onlytwo years younger than me.

Buffy stayed silent, content to watch Shelley. When Pike and I came back from that roller coaster, and she had that bear, and that big

smile on her face... Shelley shook her head. Well, like I said, thanks. Im just really gladyoure here.

Happy to help, Buffy said.Shelley took one last heaping scoop and put the lid back on the ice cream. You know,

you can stay here as long as you want, she said, shoveling the spoon into her mouth.Buffy nodded. I know.Shelley took her by the wrist as she downed the ice cream. I dont mean a few days,

Buffy. You can stay here as long as you like. You can move in if you want. To stay.

Buffy said, Shelley, I dont--Buffy, Shelley cut her off, youre good for us. You fit here. We all like you, and you

get along with everyone. It works, Buffy. You being here works. I know, dammit, but you dont have to say so. Thanks, Shelley, I appreciate that.

Really.Shelley released her wrist and gave Buffy a hug. Thats what friends are for, Buffy.

Without friends, whats the point?Buffy returned the embrace, pulling Shelley to her. Yeah, she thought, like my life isnt

    complicated enough.

*The Dutchman stared down at the assembled ranks of the children of the night--his

children, since he had become more or less their leader, being the strongest and smartest of them. The clock neared 3 a.m., the time for him to address the crowd. He peered out among them, noticing several faces he knew well, and some he had only met once or twice. The Dutchman

was not, as leaders went, a charismatic one. He didnt remember names well, although heexcelled with faces. His status as the foremost among L.A.s vampires owed more to the fact thatno one dared challenge him rather than any innate leadership skills. But yet he who stood on thebalcony in the big hall, and he would turn this rabble into an army. The vampire who would beking, he mused.

Roughly fifty vampires had gathered here. He knew Curtis had spread the word amongthe undead community, just as he knew that some members had chosen not to show up. Ill havetime for them later, he thought. When I have killed these human hunters without any outsidehelp, they will follow me. And if they wont... they will be so badly outnumbered that they willwish they had.

Dutchman spotted Curtis talking to a tall dark-haired male vampire who was thin to thepoint of emaciation. The Dutchman ran his tongue over his silver fangs and smiled; just abouttime to begin his speech. He knew the vampires were concerned about the deaths last night; theowner of the club, Benecio, had apologized to him for such a long time for what happened thathe had let the man live, for now. Humans could be useful, as food went, and the Dutchman likedthe arrangemnet with the nightclub. It had backfired on them last night, but he knew, uponreflection, that that particular game could be played again, and soon. Maybe even as a trap forwhoever the brave hunters might be.

But the Dutchman didnt worry too much about what the vampires below him mightthink about last nights massacre. It has to be an isolated incident, he thought. Not even a Slayercould kill that many. Though it could have been other vampires. Benecio had assured him thatcould not be the case-- that these killers had to be human-- and Dutchman believed the man.Fear has a way of drawing out the truth from the weak.

Two more vampires slipped into the back of the room; one wore a fedora and the other along hooded leather trechcoat. Young ones, the Dutchman mused. Always worried about howthey look. Youre not out there to impress the prey, youre out there to eat. Curtis nodded andgave the Dutchman a wave, the signal that the time had arrived, that anyone who would showalready had. Curtis moved toward the back door, and the Dutchman stepped forward on thebalcony and turned on a light.

Im sure you heard about what happened last night, he said, loud enough so that all below him could hear. You know about the massacre, you know about our six brothers and

sisters lost. Youve spread the rumors and heard the gossip. He paused and put his hands behindhis back.

Im here to tell you the truth. To tell you what really happened, and what were going todo about it. Some murmurs rose up from the crowd, but no one said anything audible to theDutchman.

You may have heard six of us were killed. Thats true. You may have heard it happenedat Benecios. Thats also true. You might have even heard that the one responsible for this is theSlayer. At the mention of that title, the murmuring grew louder. Slayer was spoken manytimes, loud enough to be heard on the balcony, and the Dutchman kept his face serious as heraised his hands for quiet.Thisll get their attention.

Yes, the Slayer, the chosen one who is supposed to hunt our kind. You all know thestories. I can assure you they are not made up to scare us. There is a Slayer, she does exist, andshe has come here hunting. This time there were cries of denial, along with demands for proof, and a few who asked, What do we do?

The Dutchman put his hands on the railing. What we do not do is panic. We do not runcrazy and start feeding like animals. We take a step back, calmly, and consider our options. Wehave a Slayer in our midst, which is not the first time this has happened. Slayers have been killed

before, and they will be killed again. I personally guarantee you that this one will be taken careof.

That seemed to quiet the crowd a little. The vampire with the fedora said, Care toenlighten us poor sods as to how?

A few chuckles greeted this remark, but the Dutchman bared his fangs in reply. Wellhunt her like she hunts us. Well find out where she lives and tear her apart-- her and her wholefamily.

How are you gonna do that? Fedora asked. Even if you can find her-- and Im notadmitting you can-- theres still the sticky little matter of, um, killing her. Taking out a Slayersnot an easy business. Its hard work.

Dutchman leaned over the railing. What would you know about it? he sneered.Fedora looked up. Why dont you come down here, big man, and Ill tell you all about

it.Dutchman growled, revealing his hunting face. He leapt over the rail casually and

dropped thirty feet to the ground. He landed cleanly and walked over to the other vampire.Im here, he snarled. So lets hear it.Well, the other vampire said, I hate to brag. He stopped for a second and considered.

Well, no, actually, I really dont. He took off his fedora and spun it away; it landed on one ofthe empty tables.

Shit! the Dutchman said. Bloody Bill!Thats Spike to you, his companion figure hissed, removing her hood.Druscilla! Dutchman babbled.Thats right! Spike said. Weve decided to pay your little town a visit and see whats

going on in the City of Angels. He glared at the Dutchman. From the look of it, not bloodymuch.

Hes afraid of you, my Spike, Druscilla said, her dark eyes piercing the Dutchman. No, Dutchman said. Not afraid. Im not afraid.Spike smiled his feral grin. There is no Slayer here, Spike said, addressing the crowd.

Hes lying to you.Its the truth! Dutchman protested. She has to be here!

Spike shook his head. Angelus killed the Slayer, mate. He pointed to his eyes. I sawhim do it.

With a nasty sword, Druscilla said. Carved her up into bitty little pieces. Then its the new one-- her replacement! Dutchman said.Spike shook his head. A Slayer on the job less than a week kills six vampires? Spike

chuckled. I dont think so, chum.Dutchman looked from Spike to Druscilla. Theres no other explanation, he said.Ive got one, Spike said, smiling. Tell him, Dru.Druscilla moved closer to the Dutchman. Its a very simple story, she said, smiling.Dutchman licked his lips. Im all ears.Druscilla reached in her coat and pulled out a wooden stake.Actually, Spike said, youre all dust.Druscilla buried the stake deep in the Dutchmans chest; he exploded in a shower of

ashes. She laughed softly as the two silver fangs fell to the ground, clinking as they hit thecement. Bye-bye, she said.

Spike turned to face the assembly. The short version is, the Dutchman was an idiot. Hepulled out a cigarette and lit it, inhaling deeply. Now me and Dru here, weve heard you have a

problem with some overzealous sheep thinking theyre the wolves. There were nods of assent, and a few murmurs of agreement. We were thinking maybe youd like some help settling accounts. The response grew far more enthusiastic this time, and Spike slid his arm around Drus

shoulder, smiling. You know, pet, he said, I think were going to fit in just fine here.Dru giggled like a little girl. I always wanted to visit the City of Angelus.Spike scowled. Angels, pet. City of Angels.Dru covered her mouth with one slim hand. Silly me, she said. What was I thinking?
