Candidates for the baccalaureate degree at the
University at Buffalo must complete a minimum of
120 credit hours (30 of which must be completed in
residence) with a minimum grade point average of
2.0; satisfy all degree requirements of their major
academic department or faculty; and satisfy all
university degree requirements.
All college-level work completed at a regionally
accredited U.S. two- or four-year degree-granting
institution will be considered transferable and will
be included in your overall grade point average.
College-level work completed outside the United
States will be considered transferable in accordance
with generally accepted criteria and standards as
established by national credential evaluation
councils, but will not be included in your average. It
should be noted that not all transferable credit will
be accepted by all major departments as fulfilling
requirements for major fields of study.
Scholarships ad Hoors ollege
UB offers merit scholarships to highly qualified
international freshmen. Scholarships are offered only
to those admitted in a fall semester.
The Presidential Scholarship covers the full cost of
attendance for four years. To be considered, a
student must have a combined SAT critical reading
and math score of at least 1470 and a high school
average of 95 (A). A separate application is required.
Visit honors.buffalo.edu/prospective/
admissions.php for more information.
The Provost Scholarship typically awards up to
$3,000 per year. Recent recipients have had a
minimum high school average of 90 (B+) and a
minimum SAT critical reading and math score of at
least 1300. A separate application is not required.
The International Freshman Scholarship awards up
to $7,000 per year based on strong academic
performance in high school. SAT scores are not
required, but are strongly recommended. Scholarship
recipients typically have a high school grade average
of at least B+ with SAT I scores of at least 1200
(mathematics and critical reading only). A separate
application for the scholarship is not required. This
scholarship is open only to those who hold or willhold an F-1 visa.
The Provost Scholarship and the International
Freshman Scholarship may be combined.
Freshmen who are awarded these scholarships may
also be invited to join the University Honors College.

Admission to the freshman class is selective and is based on
student academic records and the number of spaces available.
Most accepted students have the equivalent of a B average or
higher. The SAT I, while not required, is recommended for freshman
applicants. This test information may help us reach an admission
decision and may play a role in the award of scholarships.Admission of transfer students is selective and is based on
previous university-level academic performance and the number of
spaces available. Students with less than one full academic year of
university-level study are required to submit their secondary school
transcripts and examination results.
glish Laguage Proficiecy
Proficiency may be demonstrated with TOEFL, IELTS, or the SAT I.
The minimum TOEFL score required is 550 paper-based or 79
Internet-based. The minimum for the IELTS is 6.5 with no
subsection score below 6.0; only the academic version of IELTS is
acceptable. The minimum for SAT I critical reading is 450. (The SAT
is not required for admission, but may be used to satisfy the
English language proficiency requirement.)
Applicants with TOEFL/IELTS scores below the minimum may be
considered for conditional admission.
The UB school code for TOEFL is 2925 (SUNY U at Buffalo).
Fiacial Suppor
International applicants must complete the enclosed International
Applicant Financial Form and document their ability to meet the
educational and personal expenses for each year of intended
study. UB cannot issue a Certificate of Visa Eligibility (Form I-20 or
DS-2019) until this requirement has been met.
Although students are permitted to work on campus during the
academic year, they should not expect employment to be a
significant means of support while attending UB. In addition,
federal and state financial assistance is not available to
international undergraduate students.
Visa foraio
Students who currently hold a U.S. visa must submit copies of their
visa and initial I-94 Arrival/Departure Card; and, if currently
holding an F-1 or J-1 visa, submit copies of all previous I-20s or
DS-2019s. Canadian citizens should indicate whether they will
commute from home to classes or establish residence in the
United States.
Applicants should not proceed to UB without an official university
letter of admission and appropriate visa documents issued by the
university. If the student cannot enroll in the semester indicated,
admission is forfeited. Admission and visa
documents are not transferable from one semester
to another without first submitting a written request
for reconsideration, noting the specific semester for
which entry is requested.
Adissio o major
An offer of admission to the University at Buffalo
does not imply admission to a specific major
program. In fact, many students are admitted to a
major only after completing required coursework at
UB. Please read carefully the information below
about procedures for your intended major.
Freshe
Freshmen applying to accounting, business
administration, computer science, engineering,
exercise science, nuclear medicine technology, or
occupational therapy will be notified about
admission to their program at the same time theyreceive the universitys admission decision. The
architecture program also admits freshmen; note
that SAT I scores are required for consideration.
The music, music theatre, theatre, and dance programs may also
admit freshmen following an audition. For all other programs,
freshmen receive general university admission and typically apply
to their major during the sophomore (second) year.
trasfer Sudes *
Arts and Sciences
Students with 60 or more transfer credits and minimum grades in
prerequisite courses may be admitted to Arts and Sciences majors,
with the exceptions of programs in the arts (media study, art, theatre and dance, and music), which require a portfolio or audition.
Engineering
Students will be notified about admission to engineering at the
same time they receive the universitys admission decision.
Architecture, Biomedical Sciences, Management,Nursing,
Pharmacy, Public Health and Health Professions
Admission to these professional programs is quite competitive.
Students will receive general university admission first; the
department will notify students of its decision several weeks later.
(Note that supplemental materials may be required; contact the
department for more information.)
*Students transferring from foreign universities may be required to provide detailed
information about transfer courses for admission consideration for their major.

attractions and convenience of a major urban center, along with
the friendliness and livability of a small town.
Buffalo boasts a first-rate symphony orchestra, one of the worldsbest modern art collections, buildings designed by some of Americas
greatest architects, and a vibrant downtown theater district.
The nearby suburb of Amherst, home to the North Campus, is a
prosperous and friendly community of 125,000. Rated as one of
the safest and best suburban places in the country, Amherst is
only a few minutes commute from both the city and the
pleasant countryside.

continents largest cities, is just a ninety-minute drive to the north.
Four-Seaso liae
Western New York enjoys a temperate four-season climate. Buffalo
is known for its balmy, dry summers with more sunny days than
any other city in upstate New York. Pleasant temperatures and
colorful foliage mark the fall here, and winter snowfalls beautifully
transform the landscape.

Boston, Philadelphia, and Chicago. The international airport at
Buffalo, which is only 15 minutes by car from UB, is served by
major airlines, with frequent service throughout North America.

The university offers moderately priced on-campus accommoda-
tions to undergraduate students. There are fifteen coeducational
residence halls and five apartment complexes that provide a wide
variety of living arrangements for more than 7,000 UB students.
All residence halls offer social activities and support programs,
along with such conveniences as food service, libraries, and fitness
game, and study rooms. In accordance with the New York State
Clean Indoor Air Act and University at Buffalo policy, the university
is a smoke-free campus; smoking is not permitted anywhere on
campus (inside or outside).
On-campus housing is assigned on a first-come-first-served basis.
Housing applications received by May 1 and December 1 will receive
priority. The housing application will be sent with the university
admission packet; housing applications can be submitted only after
university admission has been offered. For the fall semester, we
recommend that you apply to the university early (February 1 if
possible) so that you will have time to meet the May 1 housing
deadline. (It is very difficult to obtain on-campus
housing after May 1).
A wide variety of convenient and affordable off-campus housing
options are also available. Visit www.livingoffcampus.buffalo.edu
for more information.
