BUENA VISTA RESORT LAKE OF THE WOODS LAKE OF THE WOODS It’s a snowy winter day here in Mount Pleasant and we’re looking forward to an- other summer at Buena Vista Resort and to fishing on Lake of the Woods. Hopefully, we can forget about political news, the internet and commuter traffic and just go fishing. We have almost lost count, but this should be our 44th year at the resort. While waiting for the ice to melt, Chuck and Dorothy are enjoying the winter scene out of the window of their new home in Bergland where they feed the grosbeaks, the chicadees, and all the other winter birds. Dean and Carla are enjoying the ocean in Mexico. Rick and Natalie are in Utah where they will float down Cataract Canyon in March. Now the sad news of 2016: Shadow departed for the big dog house in the sky and she won’t be making the rounds for handouts in 2017. She lived a good life and was a faithful camp and family dog … We look forward to spring when the ice melts and all of the ducks fly north and the fishermen come right behind them….. It was a busy season last year at Buena Vista Resort. We hosted a number of large groups and the BVR Restaurant was the hub for most of the activity. Many evenings, Christa, our new cook, grilled pork chops and Walleyes and Ribeyes and New Yorks for hungry fishermen. In the mornings, Coleen provided steak and eggs and crispy hash browns and also baked thousands of loaves of Red River Cereal Bread, chocolate chip cookies, and butter tarts and pies. In 2016 we hosted LOWISA’s 51st regatta which brought 150 hungry sailors to the resort. e first night we grilled ribs, steaks and chicken served with fresh cut french fries and a full salad bar. For lunch the next day we provided pulled pork served on a beer batter bun with coleslaw and in the evening, while the band played, we served a tra- ditional Lake of the Woods shorelunch with deep fried Walleyes, fried onions, potatoes, corn on the cob, coleslaw and for desert, chocolate chip cake and watermelon. Also, for the first time, we introduced Lake of the Woods Brewery’s flagship beer Sultana Gold to serve in our bar. e restaurant is the best and only place to eat and drink for miles 2016 - 2017 www.buenavistaresort.com Veits go duck hunting and muskie fishing October Walleye Fishing

around on Lake of the Woods. We hope everyone enjoys the service and comes back often…. it takes a lot of work to provide this service and we thank our staff for all they do to make it a friendly place to eat. If you have a large or small group, we can take care of you. Other News in 2016: Buena Vista has taken over the big green houseboat known as the Sea Lounge. It has parked at the dock for many years. Currently it is booked for all of June and half of July. There are 5 bedrooms on the boat and it will accommodate up to 10 people. There is a large kitchen with 2 large refrigerators. The Sea Lounge will stay tied to the dock and we will rent it as a floating cabin. Give us a call if you have a large group and you would like to sleep just a few steps away from your fishing boat. Big Groups: In May Jack and Gene Happe, celebrating their 50th season fishing at Buena Vista, brought 3 generations to the lake and enjoyed catching Walleyes and eating break-fast in the restaurant. In August the Gibney’s brought a group of about 30 fathers and sons for their annual fishing trip and walleye feast. At the end of August the Stanford MBA’s spawned a group of 13 for their annual trip; they look forward to even better fishing in 2017. We also welcomed the Howard’s from Chicago back after an absence of a few years while the young men attended college. 2016 Repairs & Maintainence: Ice took out the ramp to the main floating dock in 2016. Docks and Lifts built a new one and we installed it in time for Spring walleye season. We also installed a new floating dock where the Brodie’s and Beich’s tradition-ally park - the old one had outlived its usefulness and it was time for an improvement. The docks are always in need of repair and improvement. The floats under the dock at the Basil Cabin were also damaged by winter ice and we repaired them - thanks to Jeff Klaussen. Two new metal roofs were installed - one on the Dockside cabin and one on the store. We hope they last longer than shingles. We also installed a new ceiling and repainted the inside of cabin #3 - and that means no more tape on the walls! Bring that sticky putty stuff …. Other News: The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources has reinstated the Spring Black Bear Hunt and we have tags available for the 2017 Spring and Fall hunts …. give us a call if you are interested in bear hunting. We have one of the largest bear hunting

areas in Ontario which includes all of Dawson Island, Bigsby Island, Big Island and many more small islands ….. Also in the news, you might like to watch the 100th episode of Outdoor Bound on Wisconsin TV. Kurt Walbeck came to BVR in 2015 with his film crew and filmed an episode on Buena Vista which aired in 2016. They arrived the same day as the Gibney party and filmed them as they fished, swam and ate shorelunch. You can watch the episode on Youtube by searching: Buena Vista Resort, Outdoor Bound TV, Kurt Walbeck, Episode 100. Its a great introduction to Lake of the Woods and Buena Vista Resort. Fishing in 2016: There were many wonderful Walleye fishing days in 2016. The largest Walleye ever recorded on our Big Fish List was caught by Paula Norbum. It mea-sured 33.5 inches and should have weighed about 14 pounds. The second largest fish was Dan Webinger’s 12.5 pound Walleye. Both fish are real trophies. As always, reef fish-ing in July and August was exceptional. There were many 100 walleye days on the reefs out around Belles Harbour as well as out to Firebug and Skiff Island and over to Gull Bay. It’s big water and the weather had to cooperate, but the Walleyes out there were big and the fishing was way above average. Fall fishing is a wonderful experience. The air is brisk, the leaves turn red and gold; there can be frost in the mornings and somedays a chance of snow. The Walleyes school up and move into holes and narrows that are at least 30ft deep. Swarms of shiners congregate in September and October. If you can find a 30ft hole with current and shiners you will also find hungry Walleyes that are easy to catch on jigs and minnows. Muskies also follow the Walleyes and baitfish into these holes. You can troll large crankbaits like a Believer and hook these big boys. Dean and Dean Jr. went on a Fall Muskie Marathon from September to November and caught a bunch of large Northerns and Muskies (see the photos) There is a long tradition of fall Musky fishing on Lake of the Woods. For many years the Wright Brothers and up to 35 Muskie hunters came to Buena Vista to fish the first two weeks of October and caught over 200 Muskies some years. Dean and Dean revived the musky tradition this year, braved the snow and the cold and were very successful. Plan a trip and come Muskie fishing with us in 2017!

Identification When you enter Canada, a customs officer may ask to see your passport and a valid visa if one is necessary. Until recently, passports were not required of US or Canadian Citizens crossing the Canada/US border. New requirements from the US government have changed this. A passport or NEXUS card is required of you are travelling by air. As of June 1, 2009 a passport, US Passport Card, NEXUS card or other approved document will be required if you are travelling by land or sea. These changes apply to Canadians travelling to the US, and US visitors to Canada returning home. These are US government requirements to enter or re-enter the US. Although our US guests do not need a passport to enter Canada, they do need one to return home. A passport is not required for children 18 and under, but they do require proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate. A passport is the preferred document to cross the Canada/US border. It is currently possible to use proof of citizenship (like a birth certificate) plus photo ID (like a driver’s license) at land and sea border crossings. However, guests report that using a pass-port generally simplifies border crossing and results in fewer delays. Note: Children age 18 and under will need to present a birth certificate, naturalization certificate or a passport to enter the U.S. The US government provides up to date information about the requirements for travellers on its website: www.travel.state.gov and on the Department of Homeland Security websiteat www.dhs.gov/xtrvlsec/crossingborders/index.shtm
