BUENA VISTA RESORT

LAKE OF THE WOODSLAKE OF THE WOODSWell, the days are getting longer and winter will eventually be over and soon we can all go sh-ing at Lake of the Woods again. Chuck and Dorothy have moved south for the winter. ey bought a home in Bergland on the river just across the bridge and on the right or east side of the road. It’s not much warmer than at Buena Vista but it’s closer to town and all on one level with a beautiful view and many old friends around Bergland to visit them. Stop in and see them anytime, they love company. In January Dean and Carla got out of the cold for a while and went to Mexico for 6 weeks and enjoyed a 14 miles stretch of deserted Pacic beach. Rick and Natalie are in Utah for the winter taking care of kids and hiking in the desert from time to time. e phone has been very busy this winter with inquiries for 2016 reservations. Everyone seems to anticipate catching walleyes, eating shorelunch and enjoying a sunny boat ride across the lake. If you haven’t booked a shing trip yet for the summer of 2016, give us a call, we will try and nd a place for you.

2016 Events: LOWISA - We anticipate a very busy season in 2016. June and July are very booked at this point and August looks busier than ever. e 1st week of August the sailboats from Kenora will return for their second stay at Buena Vista. at means we will host up to 50 sailboats and as many as 150 sailors. It’s quite a party. We’ve planned a shorelunch for them on Wednesday evening and a band will play and we will set up a bar in the yard. It should be a very enjoyable evening. Wednesday the docks will be very busy, the boats will be serviced & pumped out and there will be sailboat races and activities. Anyone who would like to come

and see the sailboats is more than welcome to join us. ey will arrive Tuesday aernoon, stay two nights and depart ursday morning. It’s a beautiful site as they sail into the harbour, drop anchor and ll the entire bay with sailboats. e two commodores of LOWISA have reported that they look forward to their stay at Buena Vista and highly recommend the resort to anyone who has a large group that needs to be accommodated on Lake of the Woods. Also in August we plan to host the Gibney’s father and son shing trip which has swollen to 40 people. Last year we served over 30 people at shorelunch and the Outdoor Bound lm crew came along to record footage of the event. e program should be aired sometime this spring on cable TV. Watch for it. is whole thing started a few years ago when the boys were young and Dewy Jacobs brought his grandson’s baseball team and their fathers for a shing trip on Lake of the Woods. Every year more friends and fathers joined the group and the shing and food was so good that it turned into an annual event. e Stanford Social Club shing trip has also morphed into an annual event with more inductee’s every year. In 2016 they will graciously descend upon the resort the last week of August and pursue, catch, and then release, all spe-cies of sh found in Lake of the Woods. Aer Andy has completed his morning business calls, the boats will leave the dock by 10. e Stanfordites will catch walleyes all morning and keep only the most delectable ones for shorelunch. Late in the aernoon, in the most picturesque of settings, they will dine on white table cloths, served by attendant and vigilant guides, who will cater to their every whim. en, late in the evening, aer a glorious day of shing, they will be the the last guests into the dinning room, where, attired in pink kingsher bowties and sipping

scotch, they will debate with the rules committee and determine: a) who is most worthy to be admitted into the club, b) who caught the biggest sh of the day, c) who caught the most sh of the trip, and d) who, by catching the most species, is the greatest sherman.

Internet & Buena Vista - Ryan has been working on a new website for us. e old one was only 15 years old and in its time was the best around. We hope to have the new one up by spring and hope you will be able to nd it at the same old address - buenavistare-sort.com. You can also follow us on Facebook where we post photos, tell stories and pro-vide current information. You can also post your shing stories and photos there. e group on Facebook is called Buena Vista Walleye Club. Just a reminder, you can obtain your Outdoors Card and shing and hunting licenses on the internet at the following address - http://outdoorscard.mnr.on.ca Its easier than waiting in line at the oce when you get to the resort. Remember to print out the paper work and bring it along when you come to the lake, it’s valid as your license until you receive your real card license in the mail. Going forward, we plan to do more reservations and conrmations through email so, if we have communicated with you through email remember to print out a conrmation and bring it along. Last of all, Rick’s blog is still out there on the internet and can be found at buenavista.livejournal.com, he may even update it this summer ….

2015 Repairs: Between ice-out and the opening of walleye season we built a new dock for the big green houseboat that parks below cabin #4. It took most of our time in the spring to tear out the old dock, to build & ll new cribs with rock and to construct a dock heavy enough to withstand the wear and tear of the houseboat when the wind blows. Next, since the old dock at Wildwood was destroyed in the high water of 2014, we also had to rebuild it. It wasn’t as big a job as the houseboat dock and we used a oating dock so we didn’t have as much heavy crib work. Both jobs were nished just in time to tie up boats for walleye season. We also did some work in the campground. We hauled in gravel and leveled out pads so that we can accommo-date more RV’s. Now it’s easier to park and the whole area is more organized. It took awhile to complete, but we added more power to the campground and installed another box with 200 amps of service. Currently there is one 50 amp plug, one 30 amp plug and four 20 amp plugs. In the spring we plan to add another 50 amp plug. We also did some much needed cleanup work and demolished two old trailers that had out lived their usefulness. We also cleared more land behind the campground and all the way back to the high rock. We can use the extra space to park trailers and boats or store trailers and RV’s for temporary storage if you want to leave your rig between trips in the summer.

e repairs and maintenance never ends around the resort, every year there are new projects required to keep the place running. is coming spring we plan to replace some oating docks, redo some bathrooms, put a new oor in the cabin at the Basil and hopefully reroof Dockside and the minnow shed on the dock.

2015 Fishing Report: If you know what you are doing, its not hard to catch 100 walleyes a day out of Morson on Lake of the Woods. e Big walleye list from our data base on the internet recorded 199 walleyes last year over 4 pounds and of those there were 42 weighing in over 8 pounds. Steve Belgin recored the largest walleye, tipping the scales at 10.5 pounds and Russ Schnitzer recored one weighing 10 pounds. In the spring, walleye shing was hot out around Bells Harbour, in midsummer the action was great on the east side of Dawson and south towards Gooseneck, in late summer and into fall we caught a lot of walleyes from Pony Island to Starting Point. Crappies: if you can nd some of the brush piles in Obabikon you can catch crappies fairly consistently through August and into the beginning of September. Mike and Collet got their rst taste of great crappie shing in Obabikon and came to the conclusion that cleaning forty sh aer a day of shing is a bit of a job. e crappie shing is much improved over the past few years and we hope it will continue to get better. With some luck you can nd crappies all over the lake and as far out as Gull Bay, Firebag and Bells Harbour. e lake out there is big and the crappies have a lot of room to wander around, but if you run into them out there, they are big slabs. Muskies: the largest sh recorded in 2015 was 44.5 pounds caught by Chuck Gassman. ere were 43 muskies recorded last season and nowhere near all the sh that were caught and released were recorded. We would encourage all you muskie shermen to record you catches on the Big Fish List in the oce so we get an accurate count of all the sh caught - you don’t need to reveal where you caught them, just record them. Pike: Although not one of the most sought aer sh in the lake, a lot of big pike were caught in 2015. ere were 94 recored on the big sh list - some over 40 inches. ey put-up a good ght and are fun to catch and if you can llet the bones out of them, they are ne fare to eat. Smallmouth Bass: catching bass is a byproduct of shing walleye. ey ght hard and are fun to catch. e real great smallmouth shing is in September when the wall-eyes have moved o the reefs and the bass dominate the deep rock piles. You’ll catch them up to 18 inches and lots of them.

Identification When you enter Canada, a customs officer may ask to see your passport and a valid visa if one is necessary. Until recently, passports were not required of US or Canadian Citizens crossing the Canada/US border. New requirements from the US government have changed this. A passport or NEXUS card is required of you are travelling by air. As of June 1, 2009 a passport, US Passport Card, NEXUS card or other approved document will be required if you are travelling by land or sea. These changes apply to Canadians travelling to the US, and US visitors to Canada returning home. These are US government requirements to enter or re-enter the US. Although our US guests do not need a passport to enter Canada, they do need one to return home. A passport is not required for children 18 and under, but they do require proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate. A passport is the preferred document to cross the Canada/US border. It is currently possible to use proof of citizenship (like a birth certificate) plus photo ID (like a driver’s license) at land and sea border crossings. However, guests report that using a pass-port generally simplifies border crossing and results in fewer delays. Note: Children age 18 and under will need to present a birth certificate, naturalization certificate or a passport to enter the U.S. The US government provides up to date information about the requirements for travellers on its website: www.travel.state.gov and on the Department of Homeland Security websiteat www.dhs.gov/xtrvlsec/crossingborders/index.shtm

BUENA VISTA LETTERS 2015From the Jacksh Savage - Hudson Wisconsin

e 2015 Opener was a beautiful day with temps near 70 degrees and no wind. e complete opposite from last year. e water temp was near 50 degrees and the sh were biting good. We caught our rst 4 walleyes early in a spot that had not been that productive in the spring before and were back in camp around noon. e aernoon was a little less productive but it was a beautiful day on the lake. Rain was predicted on Sunday and aer a few hours on the lake it moved in. We were thankfully o the lake shortly aer 11:00 and everyone was o the lake by noon. e rain was torrential for the rest of the aernoon and well into the evening. We bailed our boat in the late aernoon and again about 10:30 p.m. Monday morning the wind was howling out of the North and there were “snow pellets” as the Canadians call it. A few brave souls went out including Cowboy Rick and Rob with their groups but it was barely 30 degrees. Woman Who Fishes and I took a scenic tour of the area in the truck and enjoyed a quiet aernoon in the warm and comfortable cabin. Tuesday the sun was shining with some wind and we were back on the lake. e “tip of the day” took us to a new spot and we had immediate success. Feeling brave, we ventured out further west to unexplored territory for us and learned a new part of the lake utilizing the map. We then headed back toward the camp and had what can be described as “fast and furious” shing. WWF’s chair tipped out of the holder earlier in the day and broke her favorite rod and bent up the reel. Her replacement had been a bust during the day and she switched to my backup which was very similar to her favorite. It proved to be her magic wand. I had no time to sh as her rod was bent over on every pass. One time we had the double bite and I knew mine was a 20+ inch walleye just by the feel. WWF’s comment was; “my sh is bigger than yours” and it was. Aer a lengthy ght and a couple of ails with the net, she landed a 35” healthy Musky. She took it o in the net and there was a wrestling match in the back of the boat as she tried to measure it. Aer all the thumping was done my bride was exhausted. Wednesday was another beautiful day and we decided to extend our stay as it was our wedding anniversary. It was the perfect present for both of us to be on the lake and shing.

e ambiance of the lake and camp are a healthy therapy aer the long winter. One of the sure things in life is change but change is not always bad. Some people have moved on and some have stepped up. e Gates and all the supporting sta provide a very positive life experience. We take it for granted because on the surface all is calm, but a tremendous amount of eort and determination are put in to make BVR the place that it is. ank you for having us back again.

Again from the Jacksh Savage - Hudson Wisconsin

Finally on Tuesday the weather turned and we got out on the lake. e rst stop proved to be the right spot and we caught 40+ walleyes (5 in the box) before the bite slowed. e next spot was new and did not produce so we tried another spot that was “the tip of the day.” We found the 18’ hole and bingo, the bite was on again. Aer the 8th sh was in the box, we headed back to camp for lunch. Aer a brief siesta it was back on the lake. Wednesday was a beautiful morning and the lake was like glass. Our rst spot and rst sh turned out to be a 26” Walleye for Woman Who Fishes. It turned out a be a good but hot day. ursday was a day to remember. We rented the BVR Pro V with Cowboy at the helm. Since we had all our walleyes, it was crappie time. O to Lake Obabikon we went to the secret spots. Un-fortunately the bite was a bit slow and our Guide was having job stress about shore lunch. Fortunately Cowboy and the Fish Whisperer got hot and “alpha” crappies were ying in the boat. e shore lunch was delicious and the rest of the aernoon very successful. en the sh cleaning started. Cleaning 40 crappies, utilizing the four step process, is a big job. Cowboy and WM leted, I washed and WWF & FW vacuumed sealed. e bounty was well worth it but lots of work.

Fortunately camp slowed down the week we were there and the sta had an opportunity to catch their breath. Everyone was healthy and in good spirits. As always, the food in the restaurant was delicious, the minnows were abundant and the ambiance was outstanding. ank you for giving us the opportunity to share in what is a very unique experience.

Dearest Wiessenheimer -

With deepest regrets and fondest sentiments we write to inform you that this past summer solstice we were unable to empty the Patron Tequila bottle. In our prime it was well within our abilities to supply you with an endless quantity of Tequila bottles for your variously creative and eeminate art projects, but due to our advanced ages and incontinent blad-

ders we can no longer provide this service on a predictable schedule. We will continue to patronize your endearing establishment for it is the highlight of our golden summers and the most that we can hope for this side of heaven is to catch walleyes in Lake of the Woods, to smoke Cuban cigars on the deck of dockside and to eat in your dinning room with its delicious steaks and impeccable service … We will continue to wear the pantalones caliente in memory of our aming youth and will, as if we were still young wolves, howl with Haney beneath the full moon in June.

May we all reunite one ne day at Bolso del Fuego just beyond Le Petite Isle de Jardin

e Haneypoloosa Solstice Celebrants

Dearest Wiessenheimer,

Having attended your guide school last summer, I am convinced that I should stick with my chosen profession of lawyering. Considering my diculties navigating through the grass, cooking perfect potatoes (not mushy), not loosing the minnow buckets or the landing nets, trimming the motor and keeping the electric trolling motor from going in circles and not to mention the nerves of steel it takes to drive full speed through Painted rock Channel, I think it is easier to keep track of legal briefs than chase sh around Lake of the Woods. Consequently, I will leave my boat at home next summer and ride in one of yours so that I can enjoy my shing vacation at Lake of the Woods …
