Street Division• Maintains street paving,

drainage systems, traffic control signs and markings

• 86 street miles • Annual street resurfacing and

seal coat program• Drainage storm sewers, inlets,

and channels

sewer treatment and distribution systems

• Water treatment capacity is 8 mgd• Well capacity 4 mgd• Elevated storage – 2.2 MG• Usage – 3.5 mgd, 757 MG• Water mains -- 126 miles • 2 sewer plants capacity 2.5 mgd• Usage – 1.75 mgd, 421 MG

Garage Division • Maintains all City vehicles• Internal service function• Repair service for all vehicles • Approximately 90 vehicle fleet• Began preventative maintenance program

in FY 14-15• Major repairs by third party service• Fire apparatus specialty equipment by third

• Street Division improves our ability to maintain and repair the street system in a timely and economical manner

• Utility Division provides safe, clean drinking water to each residence and business in a timely and economical manner

• Utility Division collects wastewater from each residence and business and treats and discharges clean water in a timely and economical manner

• Garage Division is an internal service function to economically maintain and repair the City’s vehicle fleet

• Engine pumpers that can flow 2500 GPM aerial with 103’ reach, carrying heavy duty rescue tools

• Medically trained and licensed personnel• Only hazardous material team in Henderson County• Administration Chiefs have a combined 75 years of

experience• Community campaigns involving: “Toys for Tots”,

Christmas Parade, “Fill the Boot” for muscular dystrophy and assisting foundations and care providers with their campaigns and drives

The Department of Tourism is funded through the collection of the City’s hotel occupancy tax and is

responsible for enhancing the image of the City as a destination for visitors and increasing tourist traffic to the

City of Athens.

• The department provides complimentary services to visitors and incoming groups including:– Maintaining a comprehensive website,

www.AthensTX.org, listing things to do and see, places to eat, where to stay, upcoming events, meeting facilities, special offers, interactive maps, a chat service, and social media connections. The website is mobile for visitors on the go

– Free travel literature on Athens’ attractions, hotels, restaurants, retail shops and art galleries plus tourist maps and coupons

• The department is a one-stop-shop for tourists, planners, travel writers and the media seeking information about Athens

• Tourism is the second largest industry in Texas generating more than $67 billion in travel spending, directly supporting 601,000 jobs with earnings of $20.4 billion

• In Henderson County, tourism generated more than $123 million in visitor spending, supports 500 jobs with earnings of $20 million
