PUNTING

As St Hilda's is one of the few Oxford University Colleges set on the River, the student social programme takes advantage of the on-site punts that are available to use (with staff supervision).

COLLEGE GREENERY

The riverside setting of St Hilda's College is further enhanced by the beautiful trees and gardens around the campus.

Students frequently enjoy the outdoors within the security of the College between lessons, meals and activities.

'JDP' MUSIC HALL

The Jacqueline du Pré Music Hall provides a fantastic setting for student presentations at St Hilda's College.

A stage, lighting and extraordinary acoustics enhance the quality of this beautiful hall.

STUDENT SOCIAL SPACE

Students at St Hilda's are treated two separate social areas; a marquee outside the accommodation block (fit with music and a table tennis table), and the College's Junior Common Room (JCR) - furnished with sofas and tv screens.

COURSE INFORMATION

Bucksmore Oxford 13-16 year olds

This Oxford summer school combines an intensive English language course with sporting, cultural and fun activities designed for 13-16 year olds. Students socialise with other like-minded individuals from many different countries around the world in the unique surroundings of the historic city of Oxford.

Bucksmore Oxford provides students with 25 hours of English per week. The academic programme is taught through a combination of general English tuition, project sessions, academic English and CLIL lessons.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE SYLLABUSThe six-tier syllabus has been updated for 2019. It incorporates language study, language for life, excursion link lessons and academic skills sessions.

The language study lessons focus on the communicative style of language learning and provide grammar and vocabulary tailored to a student’s ability.

Lessons integrate a wider range of topics including learner training, literacy, culture and life skills.

The general English course aims to:• Build language skills and confidence gradually through our multi-level syllabus.• Help students achieve individual goals in language learning.• Gain a better understanding of English books, films, songs, the internet and other media.

ACADEMIC INFORMATION

ACADEMIC SKILLS SESSIONSThe academic skills sessions give students an introduction to exam techniques and are intended to help students improve the skills of academic reading, writing, listening and speaking. These sessions take place over three hours each week and culminate with students taking the Bucksmore Assessment.

The variety of lessons and teaching material provide students with a stimulating and comprehensive learning experience throughout their stay at Bucksmore Oxford.

‘CLIL’CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) refers to teaching subjects such as science, literature and drama to students through a foreign language (English).

Increasingly, CLIL has been adopted and incorporated into the English language classrooms and Bucksmore Oxford provides CLIL lessons for 90 minutes each week. This extension to the general English programme provides greater variety and innovation within the Bucksmore Oxford programme, further increasing student motivation and engagement in the English language.

ACADEMIC INFORMATION

BUCKSMORE ASSESSMENTAssessing a learner’s skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening, the Bucksmore Assessment helps to improve opportunities for study and travel, and provides a more rounded evaluation of a student’s English ability.

The Bucksmore Assessment provides more relevant and appropriate language so learners are motivated to perform better than other, more adult-focused, exams.

Taken at the end of the course, the assessment is designed to complement the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference) and to provide learners with a realistic determination of their English ability. It can be applied against other international English exams such as Cambridge ESOL & IELTS.

Students will leave the course with a certificate of recommended English level measured against the CEFR scale.

PROJECTSProject sessions at Bucksmore Oxford promote group work and co-operation, in order to allow participation across all levels of English. Popular sessions include ‘Bucksmore President’, ‘Gaming Expo’ and ‘Bucksmore News’.

The aims of project work are to encourage collaboration and communication through the completion of real-world tasks that use English with an authentic purpose.

Students receive vocabulary and grammar input in the first part of the project session, and are then placed into groups. Groups are provided with a project guideline which they should follow and aim to complete in the preparation session.

The weekly project culminates in a presentation evening in which groups display and present their work.

SOCIAL PROGRAMME

OVERVIEWAway from the classroom and electives, the social programme is planned and organised by a dedicated Activity Manager, who is responsible for choosing and coordinating weekly activities and excursions. One of the key responsibilities of an Activity Manager is to respond to student requests and ensure that all students have a fantastic time during their stay. Therefore, it is impossible to provide exact timetables until a few days before the start of each week. This allows activities and excursions to be amended and acknowledge student feedback.

EXCURSIONSStudents on Bucksmore Oxford embark on 2 full-day excursions per week. Popular destinations include:

LondonAt least one excursion per week will go to the most famous city in the world, London. All students go on the ‘Politics & Royalty’ tour, which visits sites such as Trafalgar Square, Downing Street, Buckingham Palace, Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey.

Stratford-upon-AvonHome of the one of Britain’s best known authors, William Shakespeare, Stratford-upon-Avon is a wonderful example of a traditional market town.

Blenheim PalaceBuilt in the 1700s, this world heritage site is home to the 12th Duke of Marlborough, as well as the birthplace of the British wartime leader, Winston Churchill.

BathRenowned for its natural hot springs and alluring architecture, this Roman city is always a student favourite.

GRADUATION CEREMONYEach week finishes with a graduation ceremony on the Monday evening, when departing students receive a certificate and personalised report card from their teachers.

After end of the ceremony is celebrated with an end-of-week disco!

SPORTS & FREESTYLE PERIODSFor one or two periods each week, students have the opportunity to play a variety of sports or have a ‘freestyle’ period.

Freestyle allows students to sign out of the College in small groups of friends and explore the city of Oxford or to relax in the student social space.

ON-SITE ACTIVITIESOutside of the classroom, all Bucksmore students at St Hilda's join together for the social programme. A wide variety of fun activities are offered, such as team building games, talent shows, ‘game shows’ and interactive challenges. Game show activities include contests such as ‘You Bet!’, a team game in which students bet on a series of challenges performed by other students or staff, or ‘The Cube’, where students test their mathematical, spatial and logical thinking in various tasks.
