systemallows catenary-ree operation o BOMBARDIER* FLEXITY*
trams over distances o varying lengths and in all surroundings
as well as on underground lines – just like any conventional
system with overhead lines. What makes it outstanding is its
contactless inductive power transer with electric supply
components that are invisible and hidden under the vehicle
and beneath the track.

• Due to contactless power supply, operation of the
PRIMOVE catenary-ree system is sae or pedestrians

Preserving our environment by reducing emissions and
using energy resources in an efcient and responsible way
are undoubtedly major challenges which communities all
over the world ace today. Exhaust emissions and noise are
some o the main actors that lead to a deterioration in the
quality o lie in our cities. In urban transport, railbound
operations are making a major contribution to relieving
congestion as well as cutting CO2
and noise emissions.

authorities are increasingly acing visual pollution caused by

vehicles take their energy rom an overhead electrical line.
Equipping the tracks and the vehicle with the PRIMOVE
components also allows operation without a catenary.
Cables laid beneath the ground are connected to the
power conditioning and supply network. They are only
energized when ully covered by the vehicle, which ensures

sae operation. A pick-up coil underneath the vehicle turns
the magnetic feld created by the cables in the ground into
an electric current that eeds the vehicle traction system.
Inductie pwer transer principle
The unctional principle is based on the inductive power
transer o a transormer (see illustration below) – a principle
used in certain industrial applications (in the automotive
industry or transportation systems in manuacturing) or
with household appliances (i.e. electric toothbrush).

MITRAC Energy Saer
The vehicle mounted MITRAC Energy Saver stores the
energy gained during braking and is constantly charged up
during operation, either when the vehicle is in motion or
waiting at a stop, picking up the power rom the
underground section. Doing so allows both maximum
vehicle perormance and constant inductive power levels,
ensuring continuous operation o the vehicle just like
conventional catenary systems.
Testing at Bmbardier in Bautzen (2009)
The new PRIMOVE catenary-ree solution underwent
extensive testing lasting several weeks at the test track o
the Bombardier site in Bautzen, Germany: A low-oor tram
and the test track were equipped with the PRIMOVE
components. Simulating regular operation dierent test
phases were carried out.
First installatin in Augsburg (2010)
In May 2010, Bombardier and the Augsburg Transport
Authority (STAWA) have signed a cooperation agreement to
install the PRIMOVE system on a 0.8 km section o Line 3
to the airground o the city o Augsburg, Germany. The
objective o the pilot project scheduled or several months
is to obtain permissions or public passenger transport and
to demonstrate the technical capability o the system underreal conditions o daily operation.

Perrmance the PRIMovE system
• 270 kW continuous output of the PRIMOVE system,
designed or a typical light rail vehicle (30-42 metres long,
operating at a speed o up to 50 km/h with a gradient o
up to six percent)
• Performance can be provided to vary from 100 to up to
500 kW, depending on the respective vehicles and
system requirements: length and number o vehicles,
topographic conditions, range o application
