Library receives donationto genealogy collection fromPlymouth Place resident
By MEGAN [email protected]
While the season of givingmay have ended for most, atthe Riverside Public Libraryit’s only just begun.
On Dec. 7, 2014, the library,1 Burling Road, accepted aunique donation from theCzech and Slovak AmericanGenealogy Society of Illinois. The society donated theirCzech and Solvak genealogycollection of more than 1500books, maps, magazines andpamphlets to the RiversidePublic Library in the nameof one its members, Paul M.Nemecek.
Nemecek is a resident of thePlymouth Place RetirementCommunity, 315 N. La GrangeRoad, La Grange Park. He de-clined to be interviewed aboutthe collection.
“The collection is named af-ter [Nemecek] because he wasthe one responsible for setting[the collection] up,” RiversidePublic Library Director Jan-ice Foley said.
There are many volunteersinvolved in managing the soci-ety’s collection, but Nemecekhad a large role in establishingthe genealogy library from itsinception, Foley said.
While this collection cer-tainly will attract new patronsto Riverside, the donation ben-
efits both parties.“We’re excited for the part-
nership,” Foley said. “It’s awin-win for both the CSAGSIand ourselves.”
The relocation of the PaulM. Nemecek Genealogy Li-brary from its previous spaceat the T.G. Masaryk School inCicero has many advantages.A majority of the society’s800 members are located clos-er to Riverside, and the newlocation provides more park-ing, handicapped accessibil-ity and a closer proximity topublic transportation via theMetra.

The alleged gun-man killed himself shortly after shooting the officers whilethey sat in their patrol car. Navarro said he was honored torepresent the village of Riverside and the Riverside PoliceDepartment in remembering and honoring “our fellow broth-er in law enforcement who gave the ultimate sacrifice forhis community.” Navarro and Riverside Police Chief ThomasWeitzel thanked JetBlue Airways for offering a free flight forNavarro to attend the services.
“We’re currently in theprocess of cataloging

Life3Officials consider whether to close schools
By JOE [email protected]
The decision to closeschools because the snow istoo high or the temperaturesare too low isn’t made easi-ly. Neither is the decision tokeep schools open, accord-ing to the superintendents atLyons Township and River-side-Brookfield high schooldistricts.
Both school districts re-mained open Jan. 7 whenalmost every other schooldistrict in the Chicago area, including Chicago publicschools, called off classes asa result of the frigid tempera-tures.
So why do some schoolsclose while others do not?
Riverside-Brookfield HighSchool Superintendent KevinSkinkis said the safety of trav-el for students and staff is a bigfactor when deciding whetheror not to cancel classes for theday.
“[The night of Jan. 6], welooked at the forecasted tem-peratures and we looked backat last year and saw thosetemps were not that severe,”Skinkis said. “Not only didwe have that polar vortex lastyear, but we had a lot of snowon the ground.”
Staff members also had in-put, he added.
“Canceling school is notan easy decision to make andthere will always be parentsthat are not happy with thechoice that is made,” Skinkissaid. “Our goal is to try andhave school open every dayas scheduled. We understandthat there are parents whomay have a concern with theweather and choose to keeptheir child at home.”
Lyons Township HighSchool Superintendent Thom-
as B. Kilrea agreed studentsafety is the primary concern.
“We’re trying to make aconscious decision on studentsafety based on a forecast,”Kilrea said. “We look at whatwe’ve done previously. It’s notan exact science.”
While it can be assumedstudent safety is a primary fac-tor in deciding whether or notto close a school, some admin-istrators have considerationsother administrators may not
have, such as the age of thebuilding or buildings, the effi-ciency of the school’s heatingsupply and the possibility offrozen pipes.
“Another big thing is your
buses; can you get your kids toschool? There’s a lot of thingsto consider and a lot of thoughtthat goes into it,” Kilrea said.
Skinkis said something elseto consider is the fact thereis no state protocol to guideadministrators in decidingwhether or not to close schoolor school district.
While Lyons TownshipDistrict 204 was open Jan. 7,the district opted to canceldaytime classes and all af-
ter-school activities Jan. 8 as aresult of a predicted 10-degreedrop, bringing real tempera-tures to minus 8 degrees, ac-cording to a phone message atthe district offices.
The message stated theschool stood by its decisionto stay open Jan. 7, but thedrop to below-zero tempera-tures without the wind factorprompted the decision.
Lyons Township reopenedfor classes Friday.
Bill Ackerman - [email protected]
Students board buses Jan. 7 at Lyons Township High School’s South Campus. With temperatures as low as 3 degrees and a negative wind chill, many area schools canceled classes because of the frigid weather.

It’s Your MoneyBy Linda Sokol Francis, E.A.
FAFSA FOR COLLEGE AID AND LOANSYour first step toward student aid or student loans shouldbe completing the Free Application for Federal StudentAid. Many colleges use the form to evaluate the family’sfinancial situation and determine the financial aid they
will offer the prospective student. Even if youdon’t think youqualify for federalaid, it’s wise to use the form. Applications are accepted starting January 1.Be aware that some financial aid from educational institutions, clubs or otherorganizations is based on financial need, while other awards are based ondifferent criteria, such as academic merit and special talents in music, sportsor whatever. Before taking out any sort of loan, every student should apply for everyscholarship and grant he or she may be eligible to receive from any and allsources. The best deal in student loans is almost always a federal loan, whichoffers a lower interest rate and more payment options. But if there is still afunding gap– after exhausting all federal and state sources of aid– it may benecessary to consider a private loan.

OUR VIEW
Write to us
We want to hear from you. Letters must be no more than 300 words. They must include your first and lastname, town and a phone number for verification. We may edit them for clarity, accuracy and style. Emailletters to [email protected]. The deadline is 4 p.m. Thursday for the following week’s paper.
SPRINGFIELD –Why do we license barbers? Or roofers? Orinterior decorators? I’ve never quite understood Illinois’ need tocreate barriers for people to enter certain vocations.
The Institute for Justice reports one-third of the jobs in theUnited States now require state licenses. If most license restric-tions were eliminated theinstitute estimates the em-ployment rate in the UnitedStates would go up as much as1 percent, said Lee McGrath, alawyer for the group.
There are some who wouldhave you believe that government bureaucrats are perched likebuzzards waiting for some unsuspecting entrepreneur to comealong before they swoop in. The reality is filled with much moreintrigue. Regulation often is the product of a chummy relation-ship between elected officials and those in business who wantto cut down on their competition to maximize profits. So everyyear, a parade of folks in various vocations come to the stateCapitol asking for their fields to be licensed and regulated.
It usually works like this: Have the state require extensivetraining for those wanting to enter the field. Exempt everyonealready in the field from the new regulations by “grandfathering”them in. By doing this, folks in the profession can create an artifi-cial shortage of “licensed” individuals. This reduces the supply ofpeople who can do the job and enables those still in the field to bepaidmore. An Institute for Justice study found it costs consum-ers 15 percentmore to receive a service from a licensed vocationthan in a state where the same job isn’t licensed. So we are payingmore for something that provides us with little to no benefit.
But don’t professional licenses help ensure that the public issafer? Insurance companies don’t think so, McGrath said. Liabil-ity insurance rates are the same in states that require certainprofessions to be licensed and in the states that don’t, he said.
And let’s face it, consumers are the best regulators, not govern-ment. If a roofer, barber, auctioneer, hair braider or other licensedprofession does lousywork, theywill soon go out of business. Ifthey do goodwork, theymay prosper. Ultimately, the endorsementof consumers carries farmoreweight than that of government.

To do a good job reporting the news,we’ve got to tell you the full story. When it comes to court cases, we’velargely been prevented from telling thefull story because of restrictions oncameras in courtrooms. Now, there isat least one courtroom in Cook Countywhere news media can request permis-sion to take video and still images – theGeorge N. Leighton Criminal CourtBuilding in Chicago.
If you’re worried that is a step downa slippery slope toward sensationalizedmedia coverage of every case that goesthrough the courts, fear not. The trialjudge has final authority over whethercameras can be used in any given case.
Frankly, we and our colleagues atother media outlets wouldn’t even re-quest the privilege of using cameras inmost court cases because they don’t riseto the level of newsworthiness. There’sgot to be some compelling reason for usto want that, such as a public officialgoing on trial, or a particularly com-pelling murder case, such as the KelliO’Laughlin trial.
Speaking of the O’Laughlin case, that’s an instance that demonstrateswhy cameras in the courtroom couldbe valuable. Our legal system, though
the best in the world, sometimesmakesmistakes. One of the ways we can be surethat it’s working properly is by focusingattention on it. If we could have seenpictures and video of JohnWilson Jr. ashe sat in the courtroom in Bridgeview,we would’ve had that muchmore infor-mation with which to make up our ownminds as to his guilt in the 2011 slayingof O’Laughlin. There’s no reason to sus-pect anything went awry in the prosecu-tion of Wilson, but plenty of other casesover the years have raised eyebrows.
For instance, going back further, think of all the cases tainted by theunethical practices of former ChicagoPolice Detective Jon Burge, who usedtorture to extract confessions. Maybeif there had been cameras in the court-room in some of those cases, Burge’sdirty work might have been exposedsooner.
Unfortunately, the Bridgeview courtbuilding is not covered by the new poli-cy, so even if John Wilson was standingtrial right now, we still couldn’t tell youthe complete story.
In the meantime, we’ll do what wecan to cover cases like these with textonly while continuing to press for anexpansion of the policy.

‘Stop this madness:’ Snowplowed into drivewaysI am very fortunate to be able
to live in Riverside with its lovelywindy streets and small townfeel, even though our taxes arehigh here. That being said, it isalso wonderful that we havesnowplows that are mostlydiligent in keeping our streetsclear of excess snow. [But] whyis it that when the streets areplowed, the piled up snow getsshoved at the end of our drive-ways? It is so frustrating to goout and shovel the snow on thedriveway, only to come out onceagain and find the snow piled upwith heavy, slushy sleety snowthat I just worked so hard to clearup. Isn’t there something thatcan be done to both clear thestreet and prevent the snow frombeing pushed into our driveways?I challenge the village to come upwith a win-win solution for all. Itmay not be easy, but there has tobe something that can be done tostop this madness.
Rauner in office nowIt took Scott Walker two years
to turn around Wisconsin. Howlong will it take Mr. Rauner to dothe same in Illinois?
Reminder, keep petswarm during cold weatherPlease have a heart and use
common sense with regard totaking care of your beloved pets. When it’s cold outside and youare cold, so are your pets. Likeyou and I, they need to be insidewhere it’s warm and cannotsurvive out in the cold. They areour family, our loved ones and arejust as much a part of our familyas the human members are. Theyshould never be outside unsuper-vised, left out all night, left tiedup or to fend for themselves. Ifyou cannot do the kind, humaneand loving thing by making sureyour pets are safe and warm in-side, then please do not make thelifelong commitment to take onthat responsibility. On that note,if you see an animal in need, don’tbe a bystander and do nothingand say, “It’s not my problem.”Step up to the plate, make adifference and do the right thing.Let’s start out 2015 by making
the world a better place for ourpets and all animals.
Request: Install trafficsignal on Ogden AvenueI agree with the individual that a
traffic signal would cost a lot lessthan a new fire and police stationon Ogden Avenue. He mustunderstand I have presented theproblem of entering and exitingOgden Avenue from the Burl-ington area to several differentcouncils during the past 15 years. On one occasion, I presentedMayor [Betty] Cheever with morethan 700 petitioners to have asignal installed. These petitionsincluded several police officersthat said it would help cutdown the speeding, but nothingwas done. I will gladly sign thegentleman’s petition to get thenew stations on an addendum ifhe will put forth the same effortto get a signal installed for us.I have not been able to get thisdone for 15 years and since thentraffic has increased a hundredfold, including all the trucks andsemitrucks that have avoided thetollways since the huge increasein tolls and are now using OgdenAvenue as a bypass. Maybe, justmaybe, this individual will get asignal installed for us.

LETTERSThanking the area fortheir blood donationsTo the editor:As we near the start of our
41st year of saving lives in thewestern suburbs, we need tothank the hundreds of generousand underappreciated area resi-dents who donated blood duringthe past year. Those donors – some who
live as far as Lemont and Elgin– regularly show their love fortheir less-fortunate neighbors, many of whom were patients inlocal hospitals.During 2014 alone, there were
nearly 500 units (pints) donatedto LifeSource Blood Servicesby way of the five blood drivessponsored by the WestchesterBlood Program. That’s enoughto serve the needs of 1,500patients, and save lives in somecases.Because of these civic-minded
individuals, we were honoredby LifeSource as the mostproductive community bloodprogram in the Chicago area forthe 11th consecutive year. Addi-tionally, the Westchester BloodProgram marked its 40th birth-day last June. In those 40 years,it has collected 23,809 units. There are no words that can
adequately describe our donors, truly lifesavers. And that alsogoes for our many volunteerswho keep the Blood Programalive and thriving.

Keep the Chicagolakefront open foreverTo the editor:In 1890, mail order tycoonMont-

forever. He continued the fightfor 20 years. Finally, the IllinoisSupreme Court upheldWard’sactions on Dec. 21, 1910.Over a century later, Montgom-

and hiking along the [Chicago]lakefront all my life. Keep it openfor my children, my grandchildrenand great grandchildren – allfuture generations to enjoy unob-structed LakeMichigan. What are you even thinking,
talking about building on the lake?Just stop it! No discussion. Do youget it? No building ever along LakeMichigan.Chicago has themost beautiful

Approve the constructionof the Keystone PipelineTo the editor:Obstruction of the construc-
tion of the Keystone Pipelineseems to be simply another in aseries of examples of misman-agement by government. What is even more puzzling
is that most Illinois (Chicago)legislators sit idly, not makinga bit of effort to promote thisjob-creating project that direct-ly affects Illinois. This delay is not only an ob-

in the Western states but wouldcause an increase in employ-ment in manufacturing and eco-nomic growth in (the Chicagoarea) and in the Midwest.
Before construction evenbegins Illinois benefits. Beforeconstruction begins, the con-struction companies will needto order from a wide variety ofsuppliers in Illinois and the re-gion. The Midwest is the nation’sbackbone for equipment, tech-nology, products, fabrication
and components. It will directlyaffect the metals, electrical, electronics, automotive andrelated industries, including thefinancial and legal fields.
So, why are Illinois and otherMidwest legislators who bragabout what they do to cre-ate new jobs, which generallyisn’t even near the truth, simplynot urging President BarackObama to authorize the construc-tion of the Keystone Pipeline.
It seems the state and federalgovernments have failed Illinois.

WARRENVILLE – TwoBrothers Tap House in Warren-ville isn’t as showy a diningvenue as its landmark Round-house digs in Aurora, but givespatrons a ringside seat at theactual brewery. The tasty farecomplements not only TwoBrothers’ extensive creationsand sampling opportunities, but more than 50 additionalbottled artisan brews from theU.S. and around the world.
Savvy fans of the craft beerenterprise, which has beengrowing by hops and boundssince brothers Jim and JasonEbel took the leap in 1996,know they can time a week-end meal with a free tour ofthe brewery. They’re offeredat 1, 2 and 3 p.m. Saturdays, and 1:30 p.m. Sundays, withno reservations needed.
But added circus aside, theTap House is an attraction inits own right. Tables, boothsand high-tops dot the indus-trial space, whose walls sportgiant, framed versions of a va-riety of Two Brothers’ artisticbeer labels.
The restaurant notes thatall the meats are organic, anddishes are made from scratch. An added perk is that thekitchen serves late, which mycompanion and I took advan-tage of after a busy Saturday.
Scanning the menu, I readthe Brewer’s Reuben beefbrisket is brined in-house forseven days and was sad tohear it had sold out earlierin the evening. But then Inoticed the pulled pork, whichis prepared with dry rubbedpork butt smoked over applewood for five hours.
The meat was tender andperfectly spiced in a Lexing-ton-style vinegar sauce. It wassuch a generous portion that Iwould have liked a bit more ofthe coleslaw that topped it in azesty interplay of texture andflavor. In a nice touch for thewheat intolerant, gluten-freerolls can be substituted at noextra charge.
To accompany my sand-wich, I almost picked thesweet potato fries, but amglad I opted for the roasted
seasonal vegetables on the rec-ommendation of our attentiveserver. Offering terrific car-amelized flavor were squash, bell pepper, celery, cauliflow-er and carrot.
My companion pickedone of the night’s specials, achicken pot pie. He was in fora surprise. An au gratin serv-ing dish arrived capped by apuff pastry that lifted rightoff. Made to be handheld, theflaky confection was as richand buttery as a wonderful
French croissant.He enjoyed the smoked
chicken mixed with a vari-ety of vegetables, includingcelery, onion, carrots and peasmelded with a touch of savorycream sauce.
He paired it with TwoBrothers’ Northwind Imperial
Stout, which was served inan attractive snifter. The fullbar off the dining room alsooffers wines, as well as nicelyportioned samples of TwoBrothers brews for purchase. It has two televisions for thosewith eyes for more than themother lode of beers. Another
attention grabber is the enter-taining menu of craft brewsfrom the wider world.
Rounding out our supper,we split a generous dinnersalad of mixed greens toppedwith shaved radish. For des-sert, we capped the satisfyingmeal with Two Brothers’house-made cinnamon rootbeer in an ice cream float, aspicy twist on a black cow.The brewery’s other craft sodais French lemonade.
The menu extends toburgers, fish tacos, salads,N’Awlin’s Muffuletta, vegetar-ian options and desserts suchas Italian lemon cream cakeand chocolate decadence torte.
Located near its watersource of choice, the breweryis hidden away in an industri-al park off Butterfield Road. It’s well worth the search.

Bulldogs notch big conference wins
By DAN [email protected]
RIVERSIDE – If respond-ing to adversity is the sign ofa good team, Riverside Brook-field proved its worth in twogames last week.
The Bulldogs bounced backfrom their only loss of the sea-son bywinning two conferencegames by double digits. First,RB defeated St. Edward 87-51on Jan. 6 and then knocked offGlenbard South 63-53 on Fri-day on the road.
St. Edward was the onlyother team with an undefeatedrecord in the Metro SuburbanWest. RB (15-1, 6-0 MSC West)has won against every con-ference team and has done socomfortably. All six wins havebeen by double digits with anaverage margin of victory ofmore than 25 points.
The two most recent winscame on the heels of RB’s lossagainst Lake Forest in the fi-nal of the Jack Tosh HolidayTournament.
FiveBulldogs scored in dou-ble figures against St. Edwardin a dominant victory. SamJohnson led the team with 19points and 18 rebounds. Dan-iko Jackson added 16 points.Jalen Clanton scored 13 points, and Mark Smith and JamesKaczmarczyk scored 10 each.
Jackson, the team’s pointguard, also dished out eightassists and is a big reason whythe team had a balanced scor-ing load.
“Daniko is a great player,”coach Tom McCloskey said.“He gets a lot of great shots forguys on the team.”
The game at GlenbardSouth wasn’t as easy. TheRaiders led 28-21 at halftimebefore RB recovered for the10-point win. Clanton had a biggame with 22 points, and John-son added another double-dou-ble (13 points, 11 rebounds).Smith and Henry Trelenbergscored 11 points each.
“We just have great balanceas a team and we’re very deep, too,” Johnson said.
Johnson is now up to 12double-doubles in 16 games. He leads RB in both scoringand rebounding this season.
Next up for RB is a meetingwith St. Pius X, a school fromHouston, on Saturday at theMartin Luther King DreamClassic hosted by WhitneyYoung. Panthers guard Jor-dan Jackson is a Texas Techrecruit.

Defense does the trick for LT girls basketball against Hinsdale CentralBy JASON ROSSI
HINSDALE – Victoria Swiftdidn’t needmuch time to formu-late an answer as to what wasthekey ina53-25 girls basketballwin againstHinsdale Central onFriday.
“I gotta say defense becausethat’s something we’ve workedon,” Swift said. “We have toplay defense in order to win thisgame, and the toughness of our
defense got in their heads. Ouroffense brought us up, but ourdefensewas just awesome.”
ErinCorrigan, Emily PenderandHopeMillermade life toughon Central in the paint, and theRedDevilsweren’t able togetgo-ing fromoutside, either. LT’s de-fense was especially dominantin the fourth quarter, where Ga-brielleRush’s 3-pointerwith3:20to play – which made it a 50-25game – were the only points theRedDevils scored in the frame.
“Defense was a key. Theydidn’t shoot the ball well to-night, and our pressure and ourteam defense was great,” LTcoach Paul Krick said.
TheLions led24-14at thehalf, and when Central got to within28-19 midway through the thirdquarter, LT closed the frame ona 9-3 run to take control.
Swift led eight LT playersin the scoring column with 14points, 12 coming in the secondhalf. Corrigan scored six of her
10 points in the second half,Pender tallied eight points andMiller added six as the Lionsimproved to 6-0 in theWest Sub-urban Silver with the win. A 45-33 win against Proviso West onSaturday kept them perfect inconference.
“It’s definitely a big onewith Central being our No.1 rival, and also the fact thatthey’re a good team,” Swiftsaid. “To take them down likethat, it’s just an awesomewin.”

Ballard, Friars hang on against BenetBy MATT LE CREN
LISLE – Fenwick’s MikeBallard had just watched Ben-et erase a 15-point deficit andsend the game into overtime.
Given his team’s historythis season in close games, that didn’t bode well for theFriars.
So Ballard, a 6-foot-4 juniorforward, opened the overtimeby sinking a 3-pointer. Team-mate Mike Smith followedwith another trey, and thevisiting Friars hung on fora thrilling 62-60 victory inLisle.
One night after scoring acareer-high 25 points in a winagainst DePaul Prep, Ballardfinished with 17 points, in-cluding five 3-pointers, and 10rebounds for the Friars (11-4).
“When we get in tough po-sitions at the end of the gamewe haven’t responded greatthis year,” Ballard said. “[Fen-wick coach Rick Malnati] saidit was great in the overtime, when they hit some big shots, that we kept our composureand just won the game.”
Ballard had missed fivestraight shots when he sank a3 to give Fenwick a 47-43 leadwith 1:51 left in regulation.
Colin Bonnett, who scoredBenet’s final seven points ofthe fourth quarter, answeredwith a layup and a 17-footjumper to tie the game with 35seconds left.
Ballard was ready when hisnumber was called on the firstpossession of overtime.
“I was pretty sure I was go-ing to make it,” Ballard said.“I don’t care how many I miss.I still think the next one’sgoing in, so I’m not afraid toshoot.”
Neither is Bonnett, who didhis best to dig the Redwings(9-4) out of a 29-14 third-quar-ter hole. After sitting out thefirst 11 minutes of the gamebecause of a coach’s decision,Bonnett erupted to score 23 ofhis game-high 25 points afterintermission. That included atrio of 3-pointers in overtime.
“He’s a great player,” Bal-lard said. “I knew he was ca-pable, but I can’t believe theshots he was hitting at the end.I’ve never seen him do stufflike this and I’m pretty surehe’s been doing that all year.”
But even Bonnett couldnot overcome Fenwick’s greatfree-throw shooting. The Fri-ars made 17 of 20 foul shots, including 9 of 10 in overtime.
Jacob Keller split a pair offree throws after Bonnett’s 3
made it 59-57 with 24 secondsleft. Benet had a chance totie, but Bonnett’s off-balancetrey missed and Quinn Fish-er sank two free throws with6.9 seconds left to give Fen-wick a five-point lead beforeBonnett’s final 3 capped thescoring.
“Fenwick’s an excellentbasketball team, and I thinkour kids showed a lot of heartand a lot of toughness downthe stretch,” Benet coach GeneHeidkamp said. “There werea couple opportunities wherewe probably could have folded, but I thought we kept battlingback. Unfortunately, we justran out of time.”
Smith led Fenwick with 20points while Keller added 13points. Dan Sobolewski scored12 for Benet.
Lorae Mundt - For Shaw Media
