July 23 at 7:30pm - Rabbi Aaron Melman“From Big Mac to Big Macher”
Who would have thought that I would go from flippingburgers at McDonald’s at the age of 13 to Rabbinical Schoolat the age of 22? The truth is…most people were notsurprised by my decision to become a rabbi but it is that roadwith its ups and downs that led me to be here today. I was thekid who used to escape out the windows during HebrewSchool. I was the kid who got sent to the principal’s office forbeing a “wise guy”. It is thanks to the home I grew up in thathelped foster my love of Judaism and my desire to enter therabbinate.
July 30 at 7:30pm - Cantor Steven Stoehr“There are eight million stories in the NakedCity. This is one of them.”
Each of our journeys is different. While we start offbelieving that it is all of the “self” we are instructed andguided in manners that open windows of perception to us.The paths that I have trekked are not so unique and thechoices made have not been shocking, yet my near expulsionfrom day School, my Roman Catholic girlfriend and mypromising baseball career could have seriously impededwhere I ended up. Interested?
August 6 at 6:30pm – Barbara Barnett“Jew By Chance to Jew By Choice”
To me, Friday night dinner was baked chicken andLipton’s chicken soup, Mom lit candles and Dad recitedKiddush in English from the old Union Prayer book. ButSunday was baked ham (complete with pineapple and cloveseasoning) or, in the summer, baby back ribs on the barbecue.I went to Sunday School, but Hebrew was as foreign to me asSanskrit and the letters in the prayer book for all their uniquebeauty might as well have been unbreakable code. My Jewish
experience was probably not much different than a lot kidswho grew up in the ‘60s and ‘70s Skokie where Saturdayswere for hanging out at Old Orchard and not going to shul(unless it was someone's bar or bat mitzvah). So how in theheck did I get here? Let me share my tale...
August 13 at 6:30pm – Rabbi Carl Wolkinand Prospective Member Event“From a Jew by Birth to a Jew by Choice: ALong and Winding Road”
I am definitely the child of two Jewish parents, but I amalso a Jew by Choice. I grew up in a marginal Jewish home.Believe it or not, we had a Christmas tree when I was 5 yearsold, and the first Passover Seder to take place in our home inSyracuse was one I conducted when I was a college student. Ibecame the observant Conservative Jew I am today over aperiod of time, not beginning until my Bar Mitzvah. Therefore, it’s a long and winding road from there to here, and many twists in that road brought me to where I am today. They include among other things USY and Camp Ramah andchanges I began making in my own pattern of Jewish livingand observance. There was some dispute in the family aboutwhen I decided to become a rabbi, but little disagreementamong family members who were not all that excited aboutthe prospect. You will hear about that, including why Ibecame a rabbi, and much more which is all part of historynow- a journey that I look forward to sharing- with all of thetwists and turns.
Services in July will begin at 7:30pm followed byan Oneg and discussion.
Services in August will be at 6:30pm, followed bydinner. The dinner reservation form will beavailable mid-July online or in the office.

HIGH HOLIDAY HONORSAs our synagogue has grown much larger, it has become more challenging and
important to be inclusive and personal. We realize that some families have been membersfor many years and have never had a High Holiday honor. In this spirit, we would like toinvite any adult member of Congregation Beth Shalom who has never received a HighHoliday honor to let us know if you would like one. Don’t worry if you can’t readHebrew, it will be a non-speaking honor.
We realize that the size of the response will determine when your turn will come. Weshall begin with those who have been members the longest. Please remember that honorswill also continue to be given to those who serve the congregation in various capacities. Therefore, we ask your patience. In time your opportunity to come to the Bima will come.We look forward to the day when we can say that all who wish to be honored have beenhonored.
We look forward to hearing from you. Please fill out the attached form and return it tothe synagogue, or e-mail it back to the attention of the High Holiday Committee byAugust 2nd.
If you would like to blow the Shofar on the High Holidays or learn to blow the Shofar, please contact Cantor Stoehr at [email protected] by August 2nd.
Sincerely,
Carl Wolkin, Senior RabbiLily Zoberman, President

TISHA B’AVTisha B’Av, the ninth day of the Jewish month of Av, is a day
that commemorates a number of different calamities in Jewishhistory. Among these sad events is the destruction of both Templesin Jerusalem, the first by the Babylonians in 586 B.C.E., thesecond by the Romans in 70 C.E. According to tradition, bothevents took place on the Ninth of Av. In addition, the Expulsion ofthe Jews from Spain occurred on this date.
The day is observed as a fast. Also, the Book of Lamentations(Eicha) is chanted in a mournful tune. This book, one of theMegillot, is a description of the tragic events surrounding the ruinof the First Temple. Tradition ascribes its authorship to the prophetJeremiah. Tisha B’Av is the only day when Tefillin are not worn atthe morning service. This is connected with the fact that in themorning the sadness of the day is too much with us to wear theTallit and Tefillin, symbols of joy. All in all, Tisha B’Av is a sadday of national mourning by Jewish people; we must activelyrecollect the past to insure the future.
In addition to the reading of Lamentations on Monday evening,July 19, the service will be enhanced with dramatic and poeticreadings, describing different periods of persecution from ancienttimes until today. Tuesday morning’s service will also include aselection from the Book of Eicha.
