First we listened to the community leader’s report in order to get a rudimentary understanding of our geographical location and current conditions. Then we rode bicycles and took walks in Jenju Community, touring Dongshan Train Station, Dongshan River Bike Trail, abandoned rice fields, and a bamboo forest. We also visited local residents who manage bed and breakfasts. Our tour gave us ample opportunity to admire the countryside scenery and cultural attractions. After the tour, we made snacks with community volunteers and interviewed them about the current conditions and future plans for the village. We learned about the challenges they face regarding people leaving the community and the lack of economic development, and the need for better development of tourism and recreational farming, and why volunteers are willing to help out the community over the long term.

DISCOVER

DEFINE

First, we brainstormed our ideas, put them on post-its, and posted these on the wall. Then, we thought about our experiences at Jenju and looked for design opportunities. Everyone shared his or her ideas for new products and drew connections with currently available products. After maximizing practicality and business potential, we concluded that using straw as a basic material is good. Finally, we decided that we would use straw in our design. We aimed to create a product that would embody the unique characteristics of the Jenju Village Community, and attract more visitors.

We thought about potential products that could utilize straw as a basic material. We had some fun making models of various objects out of straw, and in the process generated more ideas for activities that utilize straw.

DEVELOP

Combining the distinctiveness of Yilan’s small museums and B&Bs with our ideas based on straw, we came up with a possible “Ji He” Arts Festival. This would be implemented over the long-term. First, invite design students and artists to create art works that utilize the local landscape, and invite sponsorship from local businesses. Then, divide up the abandoned rice fields and give them to the residents who run B&Bs. They can arrange special tourist packages, where visitors can create their own straw men in these previously abandoned spaces. This would be a unique opportunity to create individual memories. These straw men could become attractions in themselves and attract even more visitors to the JenJu community. After this Arts Festival has carried on for a few years, it can expand and incorporate other communities along Dongshan River.

PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION

DESIGN CONCEPT GENERATION

During the Yilan International Children's Folklore and Folkgame Festival (YICFFF), Jenju Village is crowded with visitors. To extend the tourist peak season, we would design and implement the Ji He Arts Festival, which will take place after the YICFFF. After the harvest in July, lots of straw will be collected in the elds, giving us ample raw materials to work with.

channel to promote

For promotion of the Ji He Arts Festival, we would advertise jointly with the Yilan County museums and the previous YICFFF. In August, we would entice visitors with activities and games. We would also recruit bed-and-breakfasts and other businesses in the area for publicity purposes. Starting in September, professional artists will come to Jenju and make art works out of straw to be displayed in the fields. At the same time, visitors can create their own artworks alongside the artists. Visitors can also participate in local games and other amusements.

After two weeks, the fields should be filled with interesting art pieces. People who visit then could vote on their favorite one, participate in games, and learn to make straw handicrafts. Finally, on the last day of the Festival, we will light a bonre and burn all of the straw artwork to return them to the earth.

STRATEGY FOR SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS MODEL

We had incorporated the following actors into our design: the government, visitors, local businesses, the museums of Yilan County, professional artists, and art schools/students.

First, owners of the B&Bs would rent farmland and brought large supplies of straw to prepare for visitors who would come and build art pieces.

Then, local businesses would fund professional artists to come ad create art in the elds.

Third, we would solicit funds from art schools and participating artists to defray costs and pool funds into prize money.

Fourth, visitors would be charged 100 NT each. Fifth, local residents could work as guides or sta for the festival. This would generate a direct source of income for them.

Furthermore, we would obtain funding, publicity help, and volunteer help from Yilan Country museums and the government. We hoped everything listed here would help create a rewarding travel experience for visitors, We also hoped that it would stimulate the economy of this region.
