BRUNSWICK COMMUNITY EDUCATION FOUNDATION INFORMATION

BCEF Grants In Action: 3D Printer As part of Brunswick Community Education Foundation’s inaugural grant cycle in 2015, funds were awarded for the purchase of a 3D printer for joint use by Brunswick High School’s Social Studies and Technical Education departments. In Social Studies classes, the printer is being used to, “bring history to life.” Students in Luke Potter’s Middle Eastern Studies class were tasked with designing and print-ing an artifact or building symbolic of the region. Examples of student creations include the 2nd Temple at Jerusalem from artists’ renditions, and the Blue Mosque and a spiraling minaret from the Grand Mosque in Iraq. In the Tech-nical Education Department, students in Cindy Cygan’s 3D modeling class will be printing the exteriors of the Formula 1 model racing cars they designed. Senior Amelia Hawley has been using the 3D printer to produce parts for the robotic hand that she is developing while doing an inde-pendent study in engineering with teacher Richard Clarke. To see more grants in action, join the mail-ing list, donate or learn more about the Brunswick Community Education Foundation, check out www.brunswickcef.org and “Like” us on Facebook.

Educational Tours In April of 2017 a group of Brunswick High School students will accompany Mr. Flanagan on a tour of Peru – the Land of the Inca.

One of the major highlights of the tour will be the opportunity to explore the incredible Incan ruins at Machu Picchu.

Machu Picchu was designated a World Heritage Site in 1983. At this site we will visit the Temple of the Sun that overlooks the

Sacred Valley of the Inca. Scholars are still unraveling some of the mysteries of Incan culture and architecture. In visiting the Sa-

cred Valley students will be able to see this process in action. Students will also have the opportunity to visit other sites such as

Korikancha Temple and a traditional Incan village.

Page 8: Brunswick High School Brunswick High School Dragon ... · truly takes a village to create a book that captures the many aspects of BHS. In April the yearbook students will be helping

Brunswick High School Dragon News Page 8

This educational excursion is not limited to the Incan heritage of Peru, but will also give students a chance to touch the Spanish

colonial experience. Above is Lima Cathedral; a visit here is part of our tour of the city of Lima, capital of Peru since 1535.

The focus of the trip will be to broaden the student’s understanding of both ancient and modern cultures. As part of this expe-

rience we will be taking a horseback ride through the Andes Mountains as we tour the region around Cuzco. Students can

have the same experiences as the first Spanish explorers as they caught sight of this magnificent mountain range for the first

time.

The tour is organized by EF Tours, an organization that has more than fifty years of experience in arranging student educational

tours. As part of the EF Tours program the organization partners with several colleges. These schools offer students the op-

portunity to earn college credit by completing coursework focused on their tour destination.

Enrollment for next year’s tour is currently open. Anyone who is interested should contact Mr. Flanagan in Room 211 for de-

tails as soon as possible.

YEARBOOK NEWS

The yearbook will be completed for our final deadline this March and we then eagerly await the printing of the yearbook. We expect the publisher to ship our books between the second and third week of May. A huge thank you to all the teachers, coaches, parents, students and staff that have contributed photos, rosters and information to help us with our publication. It truly takes a village to create a book that captures the many aspects of BHS. In April the yearbook students will be helping compile images for the senior slide show to be shown on Senior Night in May. Any parents who would like to email a childhood / baby pic-ture of their senior may do so. We hope to have 2 images of each senior, one from the past and one from the present. We will be using images sent in for the Senior recognition ads as well. Photos may be emailed to [email protected]

Hot Country Nights returns to Crooker Theater, April 1st and 2nd at 7:00 p.m.. Don’t miss this evening of bad jokes and great music, performed by some of Brunswick’s most talented musicians. Tickets are $10, $5 for seniors and students. Guaranteed to provide 90 minutes of quality entertainment jam packed into a 2 hour show. Proceeds benefit the BHS class of 2016, Mid Coast Hunger Prevention and the BHS music department.

On Jan.9, 4 BHS Action Team Captains traveled to the Maine Homeless Veterans Alliance to drop off donations collected for over a month. The Action Team collected winter jackets, sweaters, hats, gloves and more for the homeless population of Portland. Stephen Backman, Will Bessey, Jenna Bailey and Kimberly Brown drove to the home base in down-town Portland to visit the facility and meet with the leader Roger Goodoak. Jenna Bailey stated “Our SUV was packed with bags of every piece of clothing you could imagine. As soon as we got there, people flooded out of the building to thank us and help us bring it in.” The Association is a building that provides a daily safe space for the homeless with food, shelter, laundry services, counseling and more. While the BHS students were there, over 60 homeless people were inside getting lunch, using the computers, feeding their dogs or just resting. “It truly makes you appreciate the smaller things in life like knowing where you will sleep tonight. It puts it all into perspective” added Stephen Backman. “The men and women inside receiving help were so thankful and kind to us. It helped me realize that these people just need a little help to get back on their feet” says Will Bessey. Roger Goodoak collects donations for the homes and takes trips at all hours to visit the homeless with man-made shelters in the woods. “Roger told us that he doesn’t get paid for any work that he does with the veterans association. He is retired from the Navy and is devoted to helping the veterans get the help they need. He embodies what it means to be selfless, compassionate, kind and a leader” said Kimberly Brown. The Maine Homeless Veterans

Alliance is a wonderful organi-

zation and we and everyone to

think about donating any sup-

plies of funds that they can.

Jane Lienau recently gave a presentation at the Northeast Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, a quarter-national conference in midtown Manhattan. She spoke on her Latin program, about which she is writing a textbook. The subject of the book is about sight-reading Latin, a key component of the AP exam, but not well addressed in many Latin programs. The presentation was very well attended and was favorably received.

UNION SCHOOL NEWS

The staff of Union School extends congratulations and “well done” to three of our students who achieved high academic standards in Quarter 2. They are: Elizabeth Lavergne – High Honors grade 12 Travis Opp – Honors grade 12 Sabrina Robshaw – Honors grade 11 Seniors are now finishing the autobiographical sections of their Senior Portfolio and beginning work on the Literary Analysis Project. At this time they are beginning to ponder what question they will begin to research for their Senior Research Project. Our community volunteer, Frank Strasburger, is now meeting regularly with our seniors, assisting them with the writing process. Frank comes to us with much experience and many talents. He has been extremely generous with his time. He helps students clarify and organize their thoughts to begin the writing process. Frank is the author of Growing Up, Limiting Adolescence in a World Desperate for Adults, a reflection on what it means to “grow up.”

COUNSELING DEPARTMENT NEWS

SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION

Don’t forget that scholarship information is available in the counseling office as well as on the High School’s website! There are hundreds of scholarships ranging from financial needs, to specific

degrees or schools, to just plain fun, all waiting for applicants! Many opportunities for FREE money have already come and gone, don’t let the second half of the year sneak by without applying! Many

local scholarship deadlines are approaching; local scholarships increase the odds of winning! Ms. Duffy is constantly updating and making scholarship information available in her scholarship bin

in the counseling office and the same information can also be found on our website at http://www.brunswick.k12.me.us/bhs-counseling/scholarship-information/

where lots of scholarships can be easily applied for by following the links!

The Counseling Department has begun meeting with 9th graders during their study hall periods for the annual career/college readiness introduction to Naviance. Naviance is a comprehensive college and career readiness program that helps align student strengths and interests to post-secondary goals and improve student outcomes. Many students don’t know what the future holds in terms of a career and/or how to get there. Naviance offers the link between what happens in the classroom and how it relates to future education and career goals; in short, Naviance empowers students to connect learning and life thus resulting in a better outcome after high school. Tools offered include personality assessments such as career cluster, on line interest inventories and college search op-tions. Naviance is the primary tool used senior year during the college application process and al-lows students the opportunity to easily tract their admissions status. 9th graders will be meeting for three consecutive study hall periods for no more than 40 minutes. For further questions please feel free to call the Counseling Office at 319-1912.

Course Registration 2016-2017

Though there is still a chill in the air, spring is fast approaching and it is time to begin planning for the next school year!! For your reference the 2016-17 Course of Study is currently posted on the BHS Home Page. On March 7th and 8th the Counseling Department will distribute materials to current 9th, 10th and 11th grade students, provide any updates and answer questions. Completed registration forms are due in the Counseling Office by March 18 so students will be looking for feedback and signatures from teachers over the next several weeks. Thank you in advance for helping to make sure students sign up for the appropriate classes and levels.

In addition, this is the time when juniors and 3rd year students are beginning to prepare for the April 12th SAT. All have been registered automatically through the state and will have the oppor-tunity to practice using College Board resources as well as any that, as classroom teachers, you provide. As in previous years, the Science Augmentation to the SAT will also be administered during the school day following Spring Break. More information will follow and, as always, we appreciate your assistance in helping to make this process go smoothly.

ENGLISH NEWS

For the 20th year, students in Miss Norbert's English classes created Valentine's for local Nursing Homes in Brunswick. This year, students created over 250 cards to try and help brighten up the day for those resident's lives. As one student said, "I can't even imagine how long and lonely the days must be for some of those older people who get no visitors at all; I'm just thankful that I live close enough to be able to visit my grandparents." Students utilized their artistic, poetic, research and col-laborative skills to create some beautiful and meaningful cards, with heartfelt sayings from them-selves to the great writers of old, "Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage." The evening culminates with a performance by all three bands on stage at once. That is over 200 instrumentalists playing together for the very first time! It is truly a special evening. Course Sign-Ups It’s that time of year again! Starting this week, students will start receiving their course registration books. We like to encourage students to make sure the very first course they sign up for is “Wind Ensemble” and “Concert Choir". This will avoid some scheduling conflicts and help ensure our students are in the right courses. Mrs. Albert will be having auditions at the end of the month for choral placement for next year so choral student should check in with her ASAP. If you are interested, please email her at [email protected] Students enrolled currently in “Honors Wind Ensemble” should NOT put it on their course registration for next year. We will enroll you as soon as school starts. We have enjoyed each and every student that has been a part of the program this year and look forward to having them involved again next year! For any student interested in learning an instrument or starting chorus, it is NEVER TOO LATE! We can always accommodate a request and will go out of our way to ensure that you are involved and successful. Please feel free to see either Mr. Scarpone or Mrs. Albert if you’d like to get involved.

Finally, a few words of congratulations! Congrats to the members of the BHS Choral program on their fabulous concert with the BJHS choirs February 3rd. It was a great evening of choral music put on by some talented music students! If you missed it, you owe it to yourself to come and be a part of all that Choral Music in Brunswick has to offer!!! Congrats to the members of the BHS Jazz program for their outstanding performances at the MMEA District 3 Jazz festival and the MBDA State Jazz Festival held during the last week of February. All three ensembles performed quite well and received kind words from all their adjudicators. They each received a 30 minute clinic (at BOTH festivals) by outstanding teachers and educators in the field of jazz. As always, should you have any questions, the music department website (www.brunswickmusic.org) is updated frequently. As always you can feel free to contact Mr. Scarpone ([email protected]) or Mrs. Albert ([email protected]) for any other in-formation.

We look forward to seeing you at one of our upcoming concerts. Sincerely, Mike and Ashley

AGREN APPLIANCE GREEN BRIDGE CUP 2015-16

“Promoting Educational Athletics”

Brunswick High School and Mt. Ararat High School have always enjoyed a strong athletic rivalry as members of the Kennebec Valley Athletic Association and the Maine Principal’s Association. This friendly sports rivalry competition, known as the Green Bridge Challenge, was an idea proposed by Mt. Ararat Athletic Director Todd Sampson. Started last year, the Green Bridge Cup is being awarded annually to the school with the most victories in head-to-head match-ups. The Green Bridge Cup, sponsored by Agren Appliance, is shown here with BHS Athletic Administrator Jeff Ramich and members of the Boys Varsity Soccer team. When asked about the prospects of retaining the Green Bridge Cup this year, Ramich says “I know that our athletes will continue to work hard to defend the Cup and keep it here at Brunswick High.” Attached photo, from left to right: Luke Estabrook, Keenan Welzel, Josh Dorr, BHS Athletic Administrator Jeff Ramich, and JD Souza

A review of the policy is as follows:

Students must complete a minimum of thirty (30) hours of community service as a graduation

requirement.

Students need to earn five hours before their 11th grade year and fifteen before their

12th grade year to obtain off campus privileges.

It should be noted, in 2008 the Brunswick School Board amended the policy to allow 8th graders to earn up to 10 hours towards their thirty hour requirement for graduation at Bruns-

wick High School.

Certain job shadow opportunities may compliment the spirit of this requirement while also di-rectly satisfying career objectives suggested by the Maine Learning Results. To the extent that

these opportunities exist, pre-arranged and approved job shadow experiences may be used to fulfill

up to ten hours of the thirty hour requirement.
