February, Ash Wednesday, and the Lenten Journey— For much of our country, February is a bleak month; a listless time between the new year’s promise in January and gleanings of spring in March. In many Northern Hemisphere countries, February’s name means “the month of ice,” or “frozen rivers,” or “frost.” February doesn’t even get 30 days. Well, you get the picture. So, for some February is the month of love. A chance to let that special person in your life know just how much (s)he means to you. Valentine’s Day this year and Ash Wednesday happen to land on the same day—February 14 th . Both have a message of love embedded in them. Ash Wednesday calls us to return to the love of God our Father. God calls, beckons, invites us to return to him. February,

Ash Wednesday,

and the

Lenten Journey—

For much of our country, February is a bleak month;

a listless time between the new year’s promise in

January and gleanings of spring in March. In many

Northern Hemisphere countries, February’s name

means “the month of ice,” or “frozen rivers,” or “frost.”

February doesn’t even get 30 days. Well, you get the

picture.

However, February also brings Valentine’s Day, and

for a good many people that means roses—a striking

symbol of love, complete with thorns, and rich sensual

beauty. So, for some February is the month of love. A

chance to let that special person in your life know just

how much (s)he means to you.

Valentine’s Day this year and Ash Wednesday

happen to land on the same day—February

14th. Both have a message of love

embedded in them. Ash Wednesday calls

us to return to the love of God our Father.

God calls, beckons, invites us to return to

him. Like the father running with open arms to

welcome home the prodigal son, God in Christ calls out

to us to come to him; never imposing, but ever inviting

us to come home. Or, like the good shepherd Jesus who

comes looking for the one lost sheep. Marked with the

cross of Christ in the waters of baptism and given the

name “Child of God,” here in this place—where Christ is

present in water and Word, bread and wine, sister and

brother—we are truly home.

We celebrate the season of Lent with

Christ the Victor and Reformation

churches. The combined churches will

meet at Christ the Victor this year. It is

located at 15700 W. Coffee Road, off Moorland Road, one block north

of National Avenue in New Berlin On the five Wednesdays following

Ash Wednesday, we will have soup suppers. The suppers begin

promptly at 6:00 p.m. followed by worship at 7:00 p.m. All the soup

suppers will be held at Christ the

Victor. Gethsemane is

responsible for the suppers on

February 21st and March 14th. We

need to provide at least six large

pots of soup or chili, bread,

spreadable margarine and

desserts. There will be a sign-up

sheet in the Narthex. When you

sign up for soup, please indicate

what kind so we can avoid

duplication and provide more

variety. Thank you for your help.

This year we will again have a morning and

evening Ash Wednesday time to worship — 10:30 am and 7:00

pm. Then looking forward, the climax to the Lenten Journey is on

Good Friday where we will gather here at Gethsemane to show

our love, gratitude and appreciation for the real blood that was

spilled by Jesus at the foot of the cross to pay the price for our sin

and open the gates of the Kingdom for all believers. Like

everything else in life, we get out of it what we are willing to put

into it. I hope to see you there at these important worship times

on the Spiritual journey.

With every good wish for you in Christ,

Pastor Grant Quever

A Small Price to Pay

When you recognize God

as Creator, you will admire

Him. When you recognize

His wisdom, you will learn

from Him. When you

discover His strength, you will rely on Him. But

only when He saves you, will you worship Him.

Before your rescue, you could easily keep God

at a distance. Comfortably dismissed and

neatly shelved. Sure, He was important, but so

was your career...your status. Then came the

storm and the ripped moorings. Turn to your

career for help? Only if you want to hide from

the storm--not escape it. Lean on your status

for strength? A storm isn’t impressed with your

title.

And from that moment on, He is not just a

deity to admire or a teacher to observe--He is

the Savior. The Savior to be worshiped. A

season of suffering is a small price to pay for a

clear view of God! In the Eye of the Storm Max Lucado
