Furnace ProblemsHomeowners Can Solve
Homeowners rely on their furnace to providea comfortable temperature inside the home.During the cold weather, the furnace might startto malfunction. The springtime is an ideal timeof year to assess furnace troubles and makerepairs because the warmer weather may notrequire constant furnace operation. Many ofthese repairs are easily tackled by the averagehomeowner.
Sometimes furnace issues don't require theservices of a heating and cooling specialist.However, at any point during repairs a home-owner feels unsure of his or her work, a licensed,trained individual should be consulted.
There are a few common furnace issues thathomeowners often find easy to address withoutthe need for professional help.
Frequent On and Off of UnitA furnace that is constantly turning on and off
can be a nuisance and wastes energy. There maybe a few reasons for this problem. It could meanthe home is just drafty and the unit cannot ade-quately keep it warm. Extra insulation and/orresealing around windows and doors may be ableto alleviate this problem.
Clogged furnace filters can also restrict properairflow through the system and cause the unit toroutinely turn on and off. Some units have a safe-ty precaution where the furnace turns off if it isoverheating or airflow is compromised. Thiscould be the reason behind the improper func-tioning. Replacing air filters may fix the trouble.Blower motor ports need to be lubricated at alltimes as well. If they are dried out, it could causethe unit to turn on and off.
Another factor could be the thermostat. Afaulty thermostat that is not accurately readingthe indoor temperature can trigger the furnace toturn on frequently. Replacing the thermostatwith a new one might do the trick.
Blower Constantly OnAn improper fan setting on the unit may cause
the blower to stay on. If the blower is set to "con-tinuous," it may need to be adjusted so that thefan turns on and off. Otherwise, the fan switchmay be faulty and need to be replaced by a pro-fessional.
Funny NoisesFurnaces all have their unique noises, but if
something seems out of the ordinary, it couldmean a malfunction. A high-pitched whinecould indicate a failed belt or one that is worn outand requires replacement. Loud rumbles maymean the pilot light is not properly set or there isa dirty gas burner.
Homeowners can try changing filters, adjust-ing belt tension, replacing thermostats andimproving the insulation on their homes to alle-viate many common furnace concerns. If thesedon't remedy the problem, it's best to consultwith a qualified HVAC technician or the local gascompany for further advice. SH112417
