February’s Theme:

Fairness

Fairness means to be equal on both sides and not cheating. Everyone is treated equally and no one has an advantage over another. The rules have to be the same and equal for everyone. If somebody is not fair, then it means that the person is cheating and doesn't know that everyone is the same and should be treated fairly.

We have to treat everyone equally without any fa-voritism. We should not disobey any rules to benefit us. We should respect everyone and take turns. We should be open-minded and we should accept eve-ryone’s ideas.

Example: In a game of basketball, one of the teams won against the other team by playing fairly and not by breaking any rules or cheating.

Grade 4/5 Trip to Warren Park

On January, 11th, 2019 the grade

4/5s in Ms. Bearisto’s class went to

Warren Park, an outdoor education

centre. It was a full day trip where

they learned about Aboriginal peo-

ples, how to make fires, and things

like that.

The 4/5s split into smaller groups and did station rotations

in different activities. They learned how to make fire,

build structures, and how the Aboriginal peoples sur-

vived. They also learned about different types of trees

around Warren Park. The trees were part of a game

where they had to find the correct ones to win.

They realized how sophisticated the Aboriginal peoples

were/are since they had no technology to help them

survive, unlike we do now. Some things the students said

was “creating the fire was hard,” (Eric Gr.5); “getting to

look through ‘fly goggles’ was cool,”

(Thomas Gr.5), “I didn’t like the slide show

because it was too long,” (Victoria Gr.5).

This was it for the Warren Park trip. Thank

you teachers and parent volunteers for

helping at this event. Thank you students

for participating and not complaining

about much. Hope you had fun!

FDK Scientists in the School

On January 23 and 24 all kindergarten classes had the opportunity

to have Scientists in the School.

The students got to learn about all different types of things. They

learned about our oceans and animals, the weather, our solar sys-

tem, mixing substances, and dinosaur fossils. They got to be all dif-

ferent types of scientists. They got to learn about how different ani-

mals grow, how our solar system and constellations work, and how

to measure temperature. They got to look at many different dino-

saur fossils and mix different substances.

All of the students had a blast. These are some of the things they said:

“I liked going into the tent to look at the stars.” Adelaide in JK. Ra-

chel in SK said, “Making my painting of the fish was hard.” Oliver in

SK said “The tent with the stars surprised me.” Zara

in SK said “I didn't know that vinegar and baking

soda made an explosion.”

Thank you to all of the staff that organized this

event and the grade 7s and 8s for volunteering to

help the students in the workshops.

Grade 5/6 Salmon Egg Project

The Grade 5/6s in room 10 started a

project on salmon. This project started

in January 2019. Room 10 is currently

raising and taking care of the salmon.

The students we interviewed told us

about how they are able to incorporate

math and biodiversity in this project. Since the fish tank needed to be covered, they used measurement

to cut all the pieces of paper to cover the tank. At the same time, they learned about biodiversity.

The students who we interviewed from Room 10 (Julia, Azaria, Emily, and Jessica) were all very fond of

the project. Jessica and Emily said “watching the fish grow” was their favorite part and Azaria said “the

life cycle of the salmon” was her favorite part. There were also bad

parts of the project such as “putting my hand in the cold water” as told

by Jessica, but Azaria said that “keeping the water at the right tempera-

ture” was hard.

Now we would like to thank Ms. Givelos and room 10 for taking the

initiative to take on this task. The eggs have already hatched and a lot

more survived than was expected. Thanks to them, they will be help-

ing the environment. They will release the salmon later in the year.

Junior Hockey Practices

The junior hockey team started their hockey season off with a practice at McCor-mick arena.

The junior hockey team walked to McCormick arena around noon for their first hockey practice. The hockey rink was cold and chilly but after wearing the thick and heavy layer of hockey gear, they started to warm up

and it felt like a warm summer day.

The hockey team started off with drills, like shooting pucks at the team’s goalie -Gaby- and practised stick handling around the rink. It was a lot of fun and they all supported each other. We would like to thank Ms. Samuel for making these hockey games and practices possible. Also, we would like to thank the parents and guardians for helping out.

Junior Hockey Game– January 28

The grade 4-6 junior hockey team practised a lot for their up-coming game on the 28th of Janu-

ary. The hockey game took place at McCormick Arena. The people involved were Ms. Samuel, the players’ parents, and the hockey players.

Brock played against George Webster in a close hockey game losing 5 to 6. How-ever Brock battled hard with Juliet scor-ing a hat trick, good goaltending, chem-istry, etc. The hockey players learned to skate, improved on doing the hockey stop, and everything was a good experi-ence for them.

Thank you to Ms. Sam-uel who organized the hockey game, the par-ents who drove the hockey players to the rink and thank you to all the hockey players who participated in the game. Good luck next year!

Junior Hockey Game– February 4

The Grade 4-6 Brock Hockey team played some great games. Our team had a fantas-tic season. They played one very hard, in-tense game at the Ted Reeve Arena. Our team won one game with their hard work, effort, and determination.

The hockey team had a very close game with Ms. Samuel’s great coaching. Brock worked hard, tried their best, and got some nice results. Our Brock team showed dedi-cation leaving school at lunch to walk or drive to their game.

Our hockey team learned some new moves. For example how to shoot, pass, skate and stickhandle. They had another very intense game against William Burgess. The team worked hard, tried their best and did well.

Thank you, Ms. Samuel for making the hockey team possible, and parents who came to help and support. Finally thank you to our Brock team for their dedication.

Good luck next season, Brock!!!

Silver Birch and Red Maple

Red Maple and Silver Birch started in January when we came back from the winter break. The students participating in this activity are the grades 4-6s for Silver Birch and for grade 7/8s we have Red Maple. Each program has ten nominated books. All the authors are Canadian. If you read 5 books, then you get to vote for your favourite one!

In mid-May the students will go to Harbourfront to watch the awards and meet the authors. The Silver Birch readers have been really excited to read the

books. Jessica read all ten of them, Emily, Catarina, and Victoria have almost read them all, and everyone else is already on their third or fourth book! Twice a week at lunch, the members listen to Ms. Kondo read Holly Farb and the Princess of the Galaxy. Once a week they read their books, have a chat about them, and enjoy some tea. They also got to see Wesley King’s virtual author visit and are looking forward to the others!

On the day we started Red Maple we each chose books from the Red Maple selection. The books are “Sadia,”, “Fourth Dimension”, “Tracker’s Canyon”, “Skating Over Thin Ice”, “A Time to Run”, “The Last Namsara”, “The Strange and Deadly Portraits of Bryony Gray”, “Don’t Tell the Enemy”, “The Assassin’s Curse”. and “A World Below”. At the trip, students will have a chance to meet the authors and we will get to participate in fun activities. We will also get to watch an award ceremony, visit food stands, and much more. Janet in grade 8 told us that her favourite part is that at the end we all go on a trip together. Shealynn in grade 7 said “My favourite part is that I get a chance to read a bunch of new, great books that I probably wouldn’t have read if I wasn’t in Red Maple.” Shealynn in grade 7 also said “ I would change some of the books to make them not part of a series because some of the concepts of the books are hard to understand because they are a part of a series.”

Thanks to Ms. Kondo, who encouraged students to join and who organized and ex-plained the event for the school. We hope we can continue to participate in Red Maple and Silver Birch in the years to come.

Animation Club

In December, Animation club started. At first the founder, Mason, thought that it wouldn’t be very successful. However, it was in the end. Every two weeks, Animation club is held in room 10. The club is for grades 4,5, and 6.

When Animation club is running, the students learn how to animate and how to animate better. Most club members find it enjoyable. Some are new to anima-tion. Others have done it in the past. In the end, they have a good time. The founder has also improved from this club. He says he can teach better and be a better leader. He has even been on the announce-ments to inform the school about this club.

While interviewing, we asked some students who are apart of Animation club some highlights of the club. One person said it was being with his friend and ani-mating with him. Another person said they were amazed at how many people showed up to the club. It sounds like they have a good time with the club!

Junior Girls Volleyball

On January 31, the Junior Girls Volleyball team had a volley-ball tournament at Brock. The

Junior Girls Volleyball team played against Niagara Public School and they won the game!

In their spare time, they stretched to warm up and get ready to play their game. They also talked to their friends about the game and watched the other schools play.

Catarina in grade 5 said that she learned to slide on her knees to get the ball over the net. Catarina and Noah in grade 5 said: “Our favor-ite part was playing the game.”

Good job to all the players on the team! The girls did a great job. Thank you to Ms. Fischer, Ms. Kortje, and Ms. Lamovsek who organized the event and coached the students. Thank you to all the parents who came to cheer for the team. Congratulations to all the players who attended. Good luck to the Junior Girls Volleyball team next year!

Wellness Club

In the new year Wellness Club had their first meeting in

room 10. Wellness Club is a club designed to help people

who aren’t very healthy or well get better. Wellness Club is

meant for those who are stressed or not well in other ways.

Wellness Club teaches students different ways to help oth-

ers calm down, relax and become less stressed out. Azaria, a

student from Wellness Club

said her favorite part of

Wellness Club is “getting to help others relax

and calm down.” We would like to thank the

teachers and students in Wellness Club for

helping others. We can’t wait to see what you

plan for us this year!

Glow Club Update

The GLOW Club at our school is a drop in club and a safe place for all. Our club name stands for Gay, Lesbian, Or Whatever and this Valen-tine’s Day we decided to make love cards for all genders and sexuali-ties. After we came up with our idea we released a sheet to everyone in the school. On the sheet, people could design their own love cards.

When all the cards were submitted the GLOW Club took turns voting which love cards to sell. After we chose the four cards we liked the most (one from each age group) we ordered the cards we needed and then packaged them up in nice bags to give them to everyone who ordered cards. Congratulations to Penny, Aimi, Alishba, and Margo!

We think the cards turned out very well, and we hope everyone who or-dered them enjoys them. Margo from the GLOW Club said “the hardest part was picking only four cards to sell.” Raquel (another member of the GLOW Club) said “ seeing everyone's beautiful cards was my favorite part.” The GLOW Club would like to thank Ms. Moreiro and Ms. Kortje who organized and helped with the ordering and making of the cards. And also to everyone who supported the fundraiser. All the money went to support the LGBT Youthline. We hope that our next fundraiser/event goes just as well!

Primary Book of the Month

February's primary book of the month is Earn It by Cinders McLeod. It features Bun, a young bunny whose goal is to become “rich and fa-mous” but she doesn't understand that she needs to put in time and effort to achieve her dreams.

Bun and her mom discuss what Bun can do to improve her singing. At first Bun has trouble realizing that she won’t become rich or famous overnight. However eventually Bun’s mom con-vinces Bun that putting in effort will pay off in the end.

I strongly recommend this book as it has many important lessons taught through an engaging storyline. I believe this book is perfect for anyone from kindergarten to grade 5. This book has many loveable characters that will keep you engaged in the storyline.

Intermediate Book of the Month #2

The book of the month is “Sadia” by Colleen Nelson. The main characters are Sa-dia, Mariam, Amira, Josh, Allan, Jillian, and Mr. Letner.

At the begging Sadia goes to her first day of high school and realizes her friend, Mari-am came to school without her hijab. She also loves bas-ketball but the problem is Sadia is not allowed to play with her hijab and her outfit. Sadia is brave, smart and fights for what she believes in.

People should read this book because it tells a powerful message. I recommend this book to grades 7+. People who believe in women's rights should read this. Read this book to find out if Sadia plays in her basketball tourna-ment. Check out this book at the library in the Red Maple section. Hope you like “Sadia”!

Intermediate Book of the Month

The story Loki’s Wolves by K.L. Armstrong & M.A. Marr has many fun characters such as Matt- Descendent of Thor, cousins Fen & Laurie- Descendants of Loki, Bald-win- Descendent of Balder,

Owen- Descendent of Odin, and twins Reyna and Ray– Descendants of Twin Gods Frey & Freyja.

In the beginning, the town seer declares Matt Thorson The Champion of Thor who is destined to take Thor’s place during Ragno-rok where he must kill the World Serpent and get cut by its bite in it’s last breath like the Myth says.

Distressed by the prophecy, Matt runs away but that’s only the beginning of his troubles. On his journey he meets new friends and foes and fights many battles along the way.
