Developing Skills for Tomorrow
Graduates from todays public schools
find themselves in a rapidly advancing
workforce. The job of educators is to
prepare students for the road ahead. A
standard curriculum with reading,
mathematics, science, writing, social
studies, and history can give the basic
knowledge, but students will need
more.
Whether a student is college bound or
plans on beginning a career after
graduation they can benefit from a
well-rounded set of 21st century skills.
Education for Tomorrow
Defining 21st Century Skills.
The changes to education are not
necessarily about students receivingdifferent information, but aboutstudents processing information
differently. Critical thinking, problemsolving, communication, technological intelligence, andproductivity
An Alternate Approach
Critical thinking and problem solving is
necessary for students to successfullyenter the workforce, but also to open
up an entirely new world of self-
education.
Communication is used in everyday
life, but effective communication can
be the difference in an interview, a
business proposal, or in excelling with
a college presentation.
Technology has become standard for
use in areas of business as well as
education. A students grasp of
technology must go farther than the
superficial use of a computer and basic
internet skills and must be a whole
understanding of technology with the
ability to put that technology to use.
One of the most sought after attributes
for todays workplace is reliability andproductivity. Intelligence or knowledge
cannot promise success if overtaken by
procrastination and instability.
Students that are invigorated with
drive and determination will become
the future leaders and great people of
this generation.
Use of technology andcommunication of ideas will be
paramount for workforce success.
Students will need more than j ust basicknowledge for success in the world of
tomorrow.
Changing Teaching
Bringing education into the 21st
century will be a lengthy process,
but necessary. For future
Americans to reach their full
potential will require a renewed
commitment to bring those
students into the requirements of
the ever evolving world.
