andy Swan was very aware of the disease called cancer. He lost his mother, Grace, in 1986 and his

sister, Wanda, is a cancer survivor. But even with the family history and covering news stories for many years related to cancer, the former WDAM-TV news anchor and news director of 38 years wasn’t prepared for the news he would get in May 2014. Randy began to have stomach pains after eating. Sometimes the pain would subside, but other times the pain would continue for hours. He went to the physician to begin ruling out possibilities, but one Monday morning the pain was so severe he asked his wife to drive him to the emergency room at Forrest General. In the following days a softball-size mass would be removed from his colon and he would be diagnosed with colon cancer. Randy recalls his thoughts. “I didn’t even realize that the mass was cancer. Everything happened quickly and I woke up my wife at 3 a.m. to say, what was that mass? She told me it was cancer and that I would have to undergo chemo for at least six months after recovering from surgery.” A new journey began for the Swan family and Randy completed chemo on New Year’s Eve 2015. “The journey was long, but I am so blessed. Many have had much more to endure than me. There were days that I could not lift my head off the pillow and my feet were like weights were tied to

them. I usually took one week to recover from chemo and then the next week I would work. So every other week I was able to get out and about.” Randy thinks of the many trips to the Cancer Center for chemo treatments. “I cannot begin to tell you how special the staff is at Hattiesburg Clinic Oncology and Forrest General Cancer Center.

I never arrived that I wasn’t greeted by a smile, energy and enthusiasm. They understand that they have to show the energy that you don’t have. There is a positive vibe in the air at all times. They are caring, compassionate and never make you feel as if they don’t have time to hear about your progress. They treat everyone the same and they are the best at what they do. I am here to tell you that they are the real deal! I could not have made it without them.” Randy says that he wishes he could share every story he heard while sitting in the waiting room. He notes, “God allowed me to have this disease so I could share my story and the stories of others. I met so many wonderful people who were on the same journey. I have been in the broadcasting field all my life and now I get to use my communication skills to carry a message very dear to my heart. Everyone knows someone who has been touched by this terrible disease.” Randy recently retired after over 40 years of an incredible career in the media. “Life comes into perspective when you are faced with life or death. I realized that I wanted more time to be with family. I miss my TV audience family, but they will see me

around. I’m just moving on to a new chapter. I want to say this in closing. Please don’t delay your screenings. They will save your life. I did not have my annual screenings. I owe so much to outstanding physicians, family and friends. It takes a team to fight cancer.” Because Randy has seen and experienced the long hours patients and families spend at the Cancer Center, he is now on a mission to put something in place to create an environment of peace and tranquility. “I want to be a part of something that can make a difference and give a diversion or brief escape from the cancer recovery journey. A place that patients, families and staff can enjoy. This outdoor garden will definitely brighten their day. That’s what it is all about!” ✦

Randy Swan fulfilled one of the items on his "bucket list" with a recent trip to the British Open.

Forrest General Healthcare FoundationAnnounces The Healing Garden

he Healing Garden at Forrest General’s Cancer Center will offer patients, loved ones and visitors a quiet, outdoor

space away from treatment. The Garden’s purpose is to help reduce the stresses of illness and hospitalization, and will provide a serene environment for patients to reflect and heal. The Garden will be open to all, every day from dawn to dusk. It will feature an

entry arch, an honorarium/memorial plaza, walking path, a Stones of Wisdom fountain, a trellis walkway, a bird sanctuary, a picnic pavilion and shaded seating. Fundraising will be a collaborative effort between cancer survivors, families affected by cancer and the local community. ✦

Spotlight on SuccessNICU ROOFTOP TERRACE

ne of Forrest General Healthcare Foundation’s fundraising projects is the Rooftop Terrace, part of Forrest General’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. This outdoor living area is located in the NICU wing and provides

parents a restful place to escape the hospital setting while remaining near their tiny newborn. Completed in 2012, private donations funded the $100,000 project that includes seating areas and a peaceful fountain. ✦

Board of Directors NewsBOARD MEMBER PASSES

ames F. McKenzie, a member of the Forrest General

Healthcare Foundation board of directors, passed away recently. McKenzie was a charter member of the Foundation’s board, helping to define and direct the philanthropic arm of Forrest General since 2006. In a recent newspaper column, Robert St. John described McKenzie, “Jimmy McKenzie was a man of integrity. He was honorable, honest and a brilliant business attorney who possessed a great sense of humor. When one saw Jimmy McKenzie, there was no question – whatever he might be doing, one knew – that he was up to something good.” We appreciate the many good things McKenzie did, and because of that,

the Foundation and our community will miss him. ✦
