Week of April 18, 2011
The Williams School works with each child to build and enduring
foundation for academic, moral and social success. A Williams School
student embodies integrity, confidence and a love of learning.
Dear Williams School Families,
On Wednesday, our sixth grade went to Camp Triple C with Shawn Etter and Becky Anderson. These twodedicated teachers have a tradition of teaming up and going to Triple C. By all reports, everyone is having agreat time. We are blessed to have great students and great faculty who are all willing to spend some time awayfrom campus in order to enhance our experience here.
Next week, we have a special event. Noah and his brother, George, are going to be co-Heads for the day onWednesday. On this day, they will begin with a power breakfast at a place of their choosing and then go toschool in their Head of School finest to open the doors for drop off. They will run the assembly that day and
make sure everything goes well and everyone gets a chance to participate as much as possible. They will alsomake sure we have a no homework announcement but I dont want to spoil that surprise. Later in the day, they
will run the Honor Council meeting and probably have lunch at the California Pizza Kitchen as that is ourspecial day where 20% of all proceeds from that day go to our school. Of course, they are going to work out aspecial dessert for everyone on April 29th- free of charge. The day will then move to a nice place for a powerdessert with their Special Friends and then back to school to see everyone off. It will be a very busy day forthese boys and it should be fun.
The middle school sports teams have done very well this spring. The boys and girls co-ed tennis team is up andrunning with quite a few practices and matches lined up. The girls soccer team has yet to lose a match on the
pitch and the boys lacrosse team continues to work hard and improve by the day. There are so many middle
schoolers participating in sports. At the same time, the music is funneling up through our floorboards in theoffice indicating the students in grades 4-8 are also gearing up for another spring concert. This years concertwill be held on May 4th at Maury High School. We did this last year for the first time and it was a great venuefor us.
The weather is getting nicer and spring has definitely sprung at The Williams School. The bulbs and flowersmust have all heard about our garden tour next week. They are almost all out in full bloom. A very nice weekindeed.
Best,
Jay

Fr. Bernard from our Sister School, Saint Gabriel Middle School, visits TWSIt was an honor to host Fr. Bernard, head of our Sister School, St. Gabriel Middle School, Tuesday morning. He came
from Lascahobas, Haiti to thank the head of our school, the staff, the parents and the students for their sustained
support with funds for goats, food, and school supplies for the children, and the school building. Fr. Bernard showed a
power point presentation to K-5th in the MPR with very visible progress made in the construction of the St. Gabriel
Middle School 7th-10th. Local workers have finished building the first floor and are starting to build the second floor.
Progress is slow since he depends on donation of funds. Also there is no electricity in town and no machinery. The
students had many interesting questions for Fr. Bernard.
They celebrated his 40th birthday by singing songs and giving him colorful drawings of goats, typed letters using
Microsoft Office Word and handmade cards. Emily presented him with some funds in the shape of a check that wereraised at TWS Auction this year to benefit the middle school construction.
Bridget, Matilda, Anna and Natalie kindly toured Fr. Bernard through the school. This was a perfect opportunity for them
to practice their French. He enjoyed viewing the Haitian art created by the students in Mrs. Ungvarsky's class. He visited
Mrs. Ellen Johnsons classroom during French class and talked with the students who gave him some school supplies. Fr.
Bernard was impressed by the Roman Feast in Mrs. Amy Lindgrens classroom. He also visited Mrs. Annie Wentzel whoshared with him some details regarding TWS nursing program. He will have much to share with his students on his
return to Haiti this weekend.
Thank you to all individuals and families who have offered their positive thoughts, and financial support for Fr. Bernards
projects to benefit the children in Haiti.
TWS Band News
We are in the midst of an exciting spring with our band program and I thought I would share with you some of
the highlights.1. Band students in 5th-8th grade have had some special guest teachers in the last two months. Rodney Martell on
trombone, Joanne White on flute and Steve Carlson on trumpet, all members of the Virginia Symphony, have
given small group master classes for our TWS Band students. Our students were in awe of these amazing
performers and I was thrilled to bring them into our school to share their talents.
2. On Tuesday, April 26th, we will host a visit from the Scotts Pipe and Drum Corp, an Australian High School group
here in Norfolk to perform at the Virginia International Tattoo. The performance will be on the playground,
weather permitting, and 7th and 8th graders will enjoy a lunch, sponsored by TWS, with our guests.
3. On Thursday, April 28th, the entire 4th-8th will travel over to Scope to watch the performance of the 2011 Virginia
International Tattoo followed by lunch out at the Mall. (If you havent signed a permission form yet, please get
them in asap)4. And finally, we have our Annual Spring Band Concert on May 4th at Maury High School, featuring the movie
music of John Williams. Not only are K-3rd graders invited to participate in the concert, but band alumni and
parents or other family members who play an instrument are also invited to come perform. If you are
interested and have not already done so, please email Chris [email protected] with your
information and to get music.
Thanks everyone!
