    Week of March 28, 2011

The Williams School works with each child to build and enduring

foundation for academic, moral and social success. A Williams School

student embodies integrity, confidence and a love of learning.

    Dear Williams School Families,

This week we had Owl Awards during our assembly on Wednesday. I know I spoke about ourassembly last week, but I think these awards deserve a mention.

The Owl Awards are given to middle school students and only happen a few times a year. The awardis not a trophy, but instead it is a special change to a school t-shirt. I hope you've seen our Honorbefore Honors shirts. They are the ones with the word "Honor" on the front and "Honors" on theback...get it?

Well, these shirts are specially embroidered for this award and have the words "Owl Award" stitchedonto the sleeve. We have these shirts embroidered by Eggleston Services who "...envisions acommunity that values the abilities of all persons, and endeavors to improve quality of life at work, athome, and at play." Eggleston Services' expressed values of "Integrity, Choice, Empowerment, andQuality" are an excellent fit with The Williams School mission and motto, and we are proud to workwith and support their mission. In order to get an Owl Award, you need not be a perfect middleschool student. In fact, grades are not figured into the equation. It is truly about trying ones best atacademics which is a key aspect of the award as is personal integrity and trying to do the right thingespecially when no one is looking.

This round of Owl Awards went to three students. One from 6th grade, one from 7th grade, and onefrom 8th grade. E.C., B.A., and B.M. all were described as trying to look on the bright side of things, trying hard at school, and trying to be a good friend to all. Students and teachers all have stated thatthese are students whom they respect and trust. Anne Hastings, middle school coordinator, statedthat there were many students under consideration for this award but these three stand out at thistime. Others will have their opportunity and there will be more Owl Awards in the future.

My hope and dream is that there will be a whole middle school full of students wearing an Honorbefore Honors t-shirt with expertly embroidered "Owl Award" on their sleeves. I'd like to think that farfrom a dream it's a real possibility at The Williams School.

    Take Care,

    Jay
