RE: Enhancement of Village of Lmnby's Groundwater Monitoring Program
Dear Sir or Madam:
As you may know, the Village of Lumby is currently in the process of upgrading its water supply system. Traditionally, the Village's water supply system has relied on one deep well (Community Well), located to the north of the ViIlage, and a gallery system of shallow wells, located approximately 2 km south of the Village. In 2005, the Village commissioned the drilling of two additional deep wells at the north end of the Village, in close proximity to the existing Community Well, to supplement the Village's groundwater system, eventually enabling the Village to decommission the shallow well gallery system.
In order to protect and manage this valuable groundwater resource, the Village is currently in the process of enhancing its groundwater monitoring program. Currently, the Village monitors the quality within the Village wells on a regular basis. However, the Village would like to expand the monitoring program to include several nearby, private water wells. Data collected from the monitoring program would be used to help assess the sustainability of the water quantity within the aquifer, as well as monitor the quality of local groundwater.
The enhanced groundwater monitoring program would consist of the identification of four to six private water wells that can be utilized as monitoring wells. Once suitable private water wells have been identified, four to six wells would be chosen to be included within the Village's quantity and quality assessment, including the measurement of water levels within the wells, and/or the collection of a groundwater sample from a nearby tap, both conducted at no cost to the well owner.
THE CORPORATION OF THE VILLAGE OF LUMBY
P.O. Box 430, Lumby, B.C. VOE 200
Telephone (250) 547-2171 • Fax (250) 547-6894 • E-mail: [email protected]
Should your well be selected, and provided you are interested in including your well as part of the Village's monitoring program, additional information regarding sampling methodologies and frequency would be provided.
The success of this monitoring program depends on the assistance of volunteers. You have received this letter because your property is in a suitable geographic location for monitoring the Village's water supply. All collected data regarding your well would likely be summarized within an annual monitoring report by the Village (or the Village's Consultant), with all personal infonnation treated as confidential under the terms of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. Any results obtained from your water well would be shared with you, the respective well owner.
If you have an "in-use" or "out of use" well on your property, and are interested in participating in the monitoring program, please supply Mr. Roger Huston, Public Works Superintendent for the Village of Lumby with a copy of your well log or any other well information, or contact Mr. Huston at (250) 547-2171. For further technical information, you may contact Jacque Foley, M.Sc., Golder and Associates at (250) 860-8424.
Sincerely,
Roger Huston, AScT. Public Works Superintendent Village of Lumby
