PRESIDENT’S REPORT

What a great organisation we have! Who else would be able to bounce back from flood, staff resignations at

the beginning of the season, and swine flu, all in the one year!

We can be proud of our many achievements this year:

Telecast of Division 1 Hockey through QCTV each week, in conjunction with BHA.

Worked with BHA & KWSHC to establish Brisbane Hockey Management Group (BHMG) to run

the Burringbar Turf Facility after the collapse of ShawSportz.

Hosted a large Q150 event at Downey Park in conjunction with the U11 Southern Cross. The

event saw the collation of BWHA Archives going back to 1933.

Hosted the Women‟s Premier League in Brisbane

Won every Division 1 age division at State Championships in 2009: Premier League, U18, U15,

U13 and Veterans.

I stated in last year‟s report that we had practices in place, or being put in place, that were helping us to

grow with challenges. It is as well that we did, because since that time we have had:

Torrential Rain in November 2008 which saw flood damage costing over $70,000 to repair to the

administration office and clubhouse.

Torrential rain in May 2009 which saw flood damage costing over $130,000 to repair to the

administration office/clubhouse and playing facilities during the peak period of our season, and

rescheduling of 4 weeks of grass fixtures.

Further rain throughout the season which saw four Saturday grass fixture days cancelled – though

the mini-carnival day held to play these washed-out games was a great success and brought back

memories of the Downey Park of old.

H1N1 Influenza (swine flu) at pandemic status, causing disruption of games and confusion

regarding ability to play.

Staff resignations early in the season, but fortunately offset by being able to recruit new staff who

were able to hit the ground running.

This year was the second year since the 1970‟s where the junior and senior sections of the association

continued to meet as one, at both management and Council level. Whilst this has ensured better interaction

across junior and senior competition there are some areas that we need to give more attention to, particularly

with regards to club and volunteer participation. We also need to consider this in context of senior grass and

turf competition.

The disruptions of the year have meant that we have not progressed as many of our initiatives as originally

intended at the start of the year. The review of the constitution undertaken by the Constitution Committee

led to Council adopting an updated Constitution and we are now well positioned to review our By-Laws and

local rules and hopefully make them clearer and more consistent. We have a published Strategic Plan and

Action Plan and management will be using these documents in its planning activities over the coming

months to set the priorities for the coming year.

In closing I would particularly like to thank all the members of my management committee for their efforts,

consideration, and good humour. To our dedicated volunteers – thank you, because without you we would

not be able to exist. And last but not least my sincere thanks to Kath and all the BWHA staff for their

ongoing support and hard work.

VICE PRESIDENT’S REPORT

With my work taking me interstate and overseas on a weekly basis this year, I have advised the

Management group that I will not be seeking re-election in 2010. Not being in Brisbane on a regular basis,

saw me take on roles that could be handled via email and phone and so assisted with the implementation of

the QCTV program and with the Financial reporting of the association. I have valued the time I have spent

on Management and the close friends I have made, and look forward to a time in the future when I again can

contribute to BWHA Management.

Bella worked tirelessly for BWHA, no job was to big or too small for her, she continued her involvement

with hockey throughout her life and many a corner flag or extra touch can be attributed to her outstanding

contribution to our association.

VALE

DR MARY HUGHES OAM

24/11/1931 – 20/10/2009

LIFE MEMBERSHIP AWARDED: 1981

Mary's no nonsense approach and outstanding intellect made her a most valuable BWHA volunteer for

many years. How she fit her hockey commitments, into her very demanding work life, looking after cancer

sufferers at the RBH still astounds me to this day. Mary was honoured at many levels for her work with

cancer patients. In 1998 Dr Mary Hughes was awarded Honorary Life membership of the Royal Australian

and New Zealand College of Radiologists in recognition of her outstanding service to people with head and

neck cancer and in particular for her huge contribution to the education of cancer specialists in training.

Mary was an outstanding athlete representing Queensland at hockey, and continuing to play at Downey

Park into her 60's, she also played A Grade Squash for many years. Mary was always willing to help

umpires and new players to our game and was our unofficial doctor at Downey Park on Saturday afternoons,

often assisting with injuries.

She spent her last years living with her daughter in Victoria.

SECRETARY’S REPORT

Our planning for season 2009 started officially in October 2008. Throughout the year a number of areas

were earmarked as needing attention and these formed the basis of the planning meetings, there is no “off-

season” for Management of BWHA. It was also determined that we needed to complete a Strategic Plan

going forward and asked clubs for their input in preparation for this. We received a grant from the State

Government to complete the Strategic Plan and we thank them for their ongoing support of our association.

From October to December we again ran “Summer Social Hockey” at the SHC. Aimee Eckermann and

Jenny Heron organised this and used the database to produce the draws. It appeared that all that participated

enjoyed their games on the turf.

Unfortunately, devastating storms and torrential rain in November, affected the Summer Competitions as

well as creating major disruptions when the rain resulted in flooding at Downey Park. Approximately eight

inches of rainwater flowed through the clubhouse, destroying computers, mowers and paperwork. This just

before the Annual General Meeting, caused much havoc and a special thank you to all that assisted in

getting us back up and running as quickly as we did. Our only saving grace was that it was not hockey

season, so we had limited stock on hand and no week to week fixtures to organise. The end of November

also saw us lose Aimee from the administration team, she had worked for BWHA for three years and her

enthusiasm and hard work would be missed. I am sure she will succeed in whatever direction her future

employment takes her.

Karin Walduck (President) continued on her mission to ensure transparency and good governance of our

association in 2009. We are indeed lucky to have such a hands on, dedicated President, particularly in what

ended up being a very trying season. Lisa–Maree Jones continued to support her and looked after the

Development area, unfortunately Lisa‟s job has meant she has been out of Brisbane a lot this year and will

see her not stand for a position in 2010. Lisa‟s knowledge and support will be missed and I thank Lisa for

all her hard work. I know she will still assist when asked. Meg Brodie took on the role of Treasurer in

2009, and undertook the important task of Grant writing. This area had been lacking since Mary‟s illness

and it was great that someone was again focused on this important revenue area for our association.

After the AGM many of our Management took a well earned break. The office had a small Christmas

function. This was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. The office then closed for three weeks to allow

the office staff to dry-out and recharge their batteries ready for a busy 2009.

The 2009 year started with a Management Meeting and first Council Meetings (Junior and Senior).

Administration Folders were distributed, new club officials welcomed, clubs advised of the new

administration assistant, Elle MacLennan, and the numerous vacancies still on committees.

During 2008 and 2009 BWHA with BHA and KWSHC worked closely with the BCC to find a way forward

and manage the Burringbar Turf Facility at Chermside after the collapse of Shawsportz. This meant many

meetings and finally in May, saw the Licence agreement signed to allow Brisbane Hockey Management

Group (BHMG) Inc to manage the facility.

2009 saw us continue to use 1 field at the SHC each week and alternating either BP or Redcliffe as our

second field. This was the agreed position of our clubs and this along with the Turf Dinner, BHMG, QCTV

and other areas saw our working relationship with BHA go from strength to strength, something which we

look forward to further developing in the future.

Due to the number of teams interested Management and clubs supported the concept of trialling a 10 team

Division 1 competition in 2009. This resulted in 48 teams participating in divisional turf competitions in

2009. To avoid split venue fixtures on Saturdays which caused great headaches in 2008, it was decided to

play 6 games at the SHC each week and 4 at our other venue (either BP or Red), this seemed to be a better

format for all concerned. Congratulations to Jenny Heron, Sonya Fisher, Lyn Thomas, Karen Hickling and

Lesley Bennett for all their hard work in this area to ensure all fixtures where played with suitable umpires,

technical officials and sports trainers. The reports from all these sections are contained in the following. It

is anticipated that another turf will be available for the BWHA competition in 2010, when the Eastern

Suburbs Turf comes on line.

The Southern Cross League was played in January and February and then the AHL in March/April, which

did cause some minor disruptions for clubs in our fixtures, and teams competed without their AHL and U18

players to get the season started.

BWHA continued to work in utilising the HockeyNet Database system, many clubs doing a great job in

recording all information. Libby Roberts continued as our expert advisor this year, with Sue Barsby doing

most of the day to day work. Karen Hickling learning the Match Secretary‟s position from Lyn Thomas,

looked at ways to best utilise the database, for the benefit of all. Some interesting ideas have been proposed

and will be a working project going forward. Due to the number of clubs that do not enter the correct match

details, BWHA is looking for a better process for 2010, which may see the paid staff doing this important

statistical recording, leaving clubs to ensure the membership side of the database is correct.

The office continued to allocate the Senior Turf Umpires (Div 1 & 2), with Sonya Fisher and Di Brodie

allocating Div 3 – 5; Lesley Bennett doing the Masters and Robyn Sutherland doing the Grass. Umpiring

continues to be the major operational concern of our sport. Some clubs are doing a fantastic job in

development and promotion of this, but some just don‟t understand that without umpires there is no game,

clubs that only having one umpire available for a division they play in is not sustainable. We must take a

joint approach to develop umpiring. All members need to give something back to the sport, either

Umpiring, Technical, Coaching. Managing or Administration within their club. We are a volunteer amateur

sport, without volunteer (member) support we cannot move forward. Queensland still has some of the best

and most promising umpires, but we do not have the depth across all grades, only clubs can change this fact.

Hockeyed was also introduced for Coaching and Officiating, but the system has its problems and we are

trying to work through these with HQ. Congratulations to Lesley and her Umpires and Technical

Committee for all their work in sending quality umpires to State Championships. Thank you to Jan

Hadfield for working with our Div 1 & 2 umpires to maintain such a high standard.

The Juniors again started short of volunteers, but with better numbers than past years after some heavy

recruiting by Debbie. Debbie Wark took over the reins from Desley Mackay who stood down from the

position after 7 years. Margie Brown stayed on the committee with a few new faces Lorraine Carroll, Sue

Carey, Pam Nitarski and Sonya Taylor. It was great to see new faces but the Juniors is a large section of our

association and many hands are needed to carry the load. Apart from dealing with the rain, floods, Q150,

the large number of Juniors, the “Swine Flu” also had a major impact on the Juniors. Debbie handled all

situations with cool deliberation and always keeping the welfare and development of our junior players

paramount in all decisions taken. The Junior Council Meetings continued to be held with the Seniors and

the Junior Committee meet regularly throughout the year. Congratulations to Debbie and her committee on

a great job, in a difficult year.

In conjunction with BHA, BWHA through QCTV (Briz 31) broadcast a Division 1 match each week (either

Men‟s or Women‟s). The cost of this was borne by BWHA and BHA to try to engender greater community

visibility of our sport. While the cost was significant, trying to get free coverage through TV or Print media

is impossible, so the opportunity was taken. A special thank you to Paul Saunders from BHA for his work

in this area. Desley Mackay although standing down from the junior section, stayed on Management and

agreed to look after the QCTV games for BWHA. Desley organised commentators, team lists and with

Ronda Nix the Technical Benches. Thank you Desley and Ronda for all your work in this area.

The Turf fixtures commenced in March and the Grass fixtures were due to start on the 4th

April. A new

Administration Assistant was needed, Elle MacLennan left to pursue a Chefs career, a Saturday

administration assistant was employed – Charlotte Hawson, new U7 & U9 Co-ordinator organised and

preparation completed for the start of another exciting Downey Park season. Kathryn Duggan came on

board to assist in the office on a short-term contract to get the season underway.

But, just two days out from the start of the season, saw the first of a number of challenges to face us in 2009.

Nerieada Gill the BWHA Canteen Convenor of many years advised due to personal reasons she would be

unable to continue in the role for 2009. This included her daughter who was to cook a BBQ at Rasey Park

each week to support the canteen there. A hasty email to Management, saw Karin Walduck our versatile

President, encourage her daughter Kristin to take on this position with Karin‟s volunteer support.

Kristin did a great job, learning on the run, and instigating some better procedures for the canteen. Karin

was there nearly every week as a volunteer cook. The canteen is a vital service and fundraising area of our

association and we truly would not have been able to cope without Kristin & Karin. Sue Barsby continued

to give support both as a paid staff member ordering, collecting and stocktaking all goods required and also

as a volunteer every Saturday lending a hand where needed. Kevin Ralph & myself volunteered to get the

BBQ at Rasey Park up and running and stayed for the entire season, with the exception of a few weeks when

Martin & Regie Fisher kindly took over the duties. I believe the Junior Committee are looking at options

for the BBQ in 2010. We hope to have a planning meeting in December to further improve the running of

the canteen for 2010 and hope to be able to encourage Kristin to remain as the Canteen Convenor.

Page 10: Brisbane Women’s Hockey Association Inc.€¦ · Nikki Taylor (10) - 2005 Diana Young (10) - 2006 Helen Hill (10) - 2006 ... Page President’s Report 6 ... Umpires Portfolio 16

Then the rain came – the first weekend was washed out, no problem we thought, it gave us a bit of breathing

space with the canteen organisation, and we looked for a Sunday to play these fixtures. Little did we know

that this was just a taste of what was to come.

After the storms and resultant flooding in November we ensured all important items were raised a foot off

the ground in the clubhouse, the final insurance money was due and we thought that we had had our one in

every 20 year disaster. How wrong we were.

On 20th

May, we saw another low descend on Brisbane and bring even greater torrential rain, rain we

watched rise steadily throughout the day. The staff continued to work and as the water crept higher, we

moved everything up 3 feet off the ground, a very safe height we thought. Our cars were moved from the

carpark to higher ground, the hospital & Just Hockey rung to advise them of the rising rain water in the

carparks. But it was not going to stop, as the water entered the building and we could not put things up any

higher, we switched of all electricity, grabbed the Server and vacated the building through thigh deep water.

Returning the next day was heart-breaking, the water had reached over 1.2 metres in the clubhouse and

much higher in the equipment sheds, nothing was unaffected. The damage and loss of so much seemed

insurmountable. But, when the going gets tough the tough get going as they say, the staff were magnificent,

turning up with mops, buckets and smiles to again wash the mud out of our belongings. But this time not

only the offices, canteen, equipment shed but the fields and outlying building were affected. An urgent SOS

sent out by Debbie Wark to clubs, saw over 150 volunteers turn up on the Saturday to wash, scrub, and

fumigate the buildings. Thank you to all that attended and assisted. A special mention to Jenny Tidey and

Joyce Proctor who attended for weeks spreading out & drying paperwork, I am still not sure what the

auditors will say about some of the paperwork. We also were visited by Grace Grace and David Hinchliffe

our local State and Council members and valuable assistance from the State Emergency fund was gained.

Ironically we received the final payment from the water damage in November a week after the May damage

and we are still working through the insurance claim for May at the time of print.

With water still seeping out of the walls and sockets, and the smell unbearable, we relocated the

administration offices upstairs. This move will be made permanent in the near future. We are currently

investigating ways to fund this permanent move. We missed 4 week-ends of fixtures, the office staff

primarily worked from home on their personal computers and things were very trying to say the least. Thank

you to all members whose great patience and understanding was appreciated.

Our Constitution Committee finalised the new Constitution and it was put to the clubs in March and

accepted. Unfortunately, the paperwork for the Department of Fair Trading was lost in the May flood, and

had to be re-submitted in August, thankfully the new Constitution was approved in September and we can

hold our AGM as per the new rules. Ronda and her committee will now start looking at updating the by-

laws. Thank you Ronda for another busy year.

Annette Stouter continued to work with BHA to create an enjoyable Turf Dinner, unfortunately HQ on

Lytton the caterers at the SHC decided to relinquish their lease at the SHC, which created great problems

with organisation of the event. Annette did a power of work, but suggestions from clubs mean we may look

at a different venue and format for 2010. The grass dinner this year also posed a new challenge with the

administration office moving upstairs, the area available to hold the dinner was reduced by a third. It was

decided to apply for a Liquor Licence to hold the event on the grassed area in front of the clubhouse. The

format, food and style was great, but 2009 being what it was, saw the hottest day of August fall on our

Dinner date, it also happened to be a double header to make up for washed out games and the original date

could not be utilised due to the need to gain a special liquor licence. We will look at all these things in

planning, to take the positives out of the situations and have bigger and better events in 2010.

Meg Brodie applied for and gained funding for a Q150 Events from the State Government. Debbie Wark

convened a committee to ensure all the correct protocols were followed and a great event would be had by

all. The event incorporated the U11 Southern Cross day. Elma Brennand, Joyce Proctor, Shirley Otto and

Jenny Tidey worked tirelessly to create a documented history of our association, special displays and events

(including a March Past) were held on the day. Special guests Grace Grace, David Hinchliffe, BWHA Life

Members and supporters attended. This was a great achievement in a very difficult year. Congratulations to

Debbie and her band of workers for bringing it all together.

Our Development Department was at full swing this year, and achieved outstanding results, with BWHA

winning every Division 1 title at State Championships: Premier League; U18; U15; U13 & Veterans. Sharyn

took long service during December and January and came back refreshed ready to continue working

tirelessly to ensure we have up to date programs and opportunities for all members. Regie Fisher (BWHA

RDO) looked after the U7 & U9 Rookie & U11 Southern Cross areas as well as increasing the number of

school visits promoting and introducing hockey in Brisbane. At Rasey Park in 2009 we trialled mixed U7 &

U9 Teams with BHA to encourage family participation in our sport, while mixed numbers in BWHA were

not high, it appears to have been well received. Sue Barsby took on many roles this year, working as admin

support for development, organising tours and uniforms, supplying the canteen and bar, deliveries and

collections of everything from trophies to uniforms, managing the database and any other miscellaneous

task asked of her. She is greatly valued for the many and varied tasks she takes on for BWHA.

Karen Hickling continued to lend assistance at the very busy player fee payment time and checked all

information received from clubs, this took a great workload off me and I truly appreciate her assistance with

this.

We continue to have gatherings of our Life and Past Members in our clubhouse during the season. Opening

Day at Downey Park normally our first event – was called off due to the rain. We lost Life Member Bella

Sim this year, but welcomed Jan Hadfield to the Life Member group. Many of our members feel the joy of

childbirth, engagements and marriages during the year and we congratulate you on these. On the other hand

we also lose many loved ones or experience great loss for many reasons our condolences and thoughts go to

all members who have suffered in this way.

BWHA continues to grow and time becomes more precious. I cannot thank enough the people who

continue to give so much time to our Association on a volunteer basis. Thank you to all our Management,

Committees and Officials this year. Your support has been appreciated and you can be justly proud of the

achievements in this most difficult year.

TREASURER’S REPORT

After a low year in 2007-2008, particular attention was paid to the Budget for 2008-2009. Processes were

put in place to make the canteen and bar more accountable and we looked set to turn our small loss in 2008

to a small profit in 2009.

But the best laid plans do not always come to fruition. The rain damage in November and May have meant

keeping a close rein on expenses versus income very difficult. At the time of writing this report the

insurance claim for May has not been finalised. The assistance from the State Government however has

been invaluable.

Many of our assets have been replaced through insurance and the potential insurance premium for 2009 -

2010 is eagerly anticipated.

The final accounts for this year are at the end of this Annual Report.

Meg Brodie took over the role of Treasurer in 2009. While overseeing the bulk of the financial work being

done in the office, Meg focused on grant applications, securing funds from the Q150 celebration and the

State Government disaster fund. We have also submitted an application for funding to relocate our

administration office from downstairs to upstairs, to reduce future risk of interruptions due to rain.

Most clubs paid their accounts on time, however a few were very tardy and needed constant prompting. It

would be appreciated if all clubs can ensure they remain financial at all times next year.

Our canteen had a number of hiccups – change of convenor, loss of stock & equipment due to the floods and

multiple double headers to play washed out games. Kristin Walduck came on board and ensured the

canteen kept functioning, thanks Kristin for taking on this challenging position at a moments notice.

The bar was well patronised each week, thank you to Denise, Joyce, Jenny, Mary, Bud & Caroline for all

your work with this.

The Summer Competition continues to be popular and allows for Cash Flow during the Summer season.

To our major suppliers and supporters: Just Hockey, Bowketts Electrical, Schweppes, Four‟n 20, PDF,

Canteen Supplies and Streets thank you for your support throughout the year. Thanks to the BCC for their

assistance with the parking issues at Downey Park and ground works at Downey Park it is greatly

appreciated, thanks also to the State Government for their Disaster and Q150 funding.

COMPETITIONS PORTFOLIO REPORTS

COMPETITIONS – FIXTURE & GRADING

TURF

2009 has been another busy year for our turf clubs. The mix of the State Hockey Centre, Redcliffe and

Burringbar Park has had clubs playing at all venues this year. So that clubs didn‟t have to have split games,

an extra two games were played at the State Hockey Centre each week and I think all clubs appreciated not

having to run from one venue to another to support their Division 1 and 2 teams on a Saturday.

A decision was made to make Divisions 1, 2, 4 and 5 into 10 team competitions and Division 3 had 8 teams

totalling 48 teams on the turf.

The turf season commenced in early March, ten timeslots were required for Division 1 and 2 on Saturdays

with fourteen on Sundays needed for Division 3, 4 and 5 games.

MONDAY MASTERS

Monday Masters competition was extended to three divisions made up of 6 teams in each division. Having

three divisions meant that each division played at a separate venue each week, State Hockey Centre,

Redcliffe and Burringbar Park. All teams recorded wins and all divisions were hotly contested. All finals

were played at State Hockey Centre, Valleys winning Division 3, Norths winning Division 2 and Easts

Division 1.

DOWNEY PARK – GRASS

Numbers were up for the grass divisions this year with 49 teams affiliating, one more than last year and this

was made up of 4 divisions of 10, 1 division of 9. Grass fixtures commenced on Saturday 4 April and there

were four Saturdays washed out due to rain and the aftermath of rain during the week. Management decided

to have a “carnival” type day on the 9th

August to play the washed out games, some clubs brought tents and

had picnics which made a great day for all who were at Downey and something we will look at again if

needed.

All divisions were very competitive with a couple of teams not registering wins, but they all had a couple of

draws.

Next season we are endeavouring to put in a couple of wet days, so there will be some Sunday games if

needed and hopefully we won‟t have complete wet weekends in 2010.

Presidents Cup was not held this year due to the large number of Inter-City, National and International

games held during the season. The teams leading at the end of Round 1 were named the Presidents Cup

winners.

With 115 teams in our competition this year, seven teams were Minor Premiers and Premiers in their

division. No team was undefeated in the round games.

Thank you to all the ladies who were on the BWHA Fixture & Grading Committees for a job well done.

Hope to see you back next year.

COMPETITION: OPERATIONS

Umpires - Development

BWHA again worked hard to send quality umpires that were at the right level of their development to State

Championships. All of these umpires developed their skills further, whether or not they were awarded a

higher badge. Umpires who attended State Championships are listed with the Representative team report.

Details of badges awarded are included at the end of this report.

Umpire Representatives

Lyn Cowie-McAllister umpired at the Four Nations Hockey Tournament in South Africa

Lyn Cowie-McAllister, Aleeta Micallef and Annette Asplin were appointed to the AHL panel.

Kathryn Foster and Catherine Costello were appointed to the U18 panel.

Page 13: Brisbane Women’s Hockey Association Inc.€¦ · Nikki Taylor (10) - 2005 Diana Young (10) - 2006 Helen Hill (10) - 2006 ... Page President’s Report 6 ... Umpires Portfolio 16

13 | P a g e

Sonya Fisher and Sioux Sharpe have been appointed to the National Veterans Championships.

Katrina Nitarski and Alicia Neumann were appointed to the panel for the National U15s

Championship.

So overall BWHA had very good representation at National Championships in 2009 – hopefully this will

continue in 2010.

Umpires - Fixtures

Robyn Sutherland, the Association‟s Umpires Grass Steward again took on a largely thankless task in 2009.

Umpires were named for DP1-DP2, and clubs again provided umpires for their own games from DP3-DP5.

The lack of club umpires put forward for testing and the Association‟s inability to stretch a limited number

of mentors over a lot of timeslots / venues meant that not all umpires could be mentored during the year.

However, in 2009 some clubs again actively mentored their umpires which is something that we would like

seen expanded further in 2010. It is still a club responsibility to get your own umpires up to (at least) DP3

standard so that BWHA can assess them.

Thanks go to Cheryl Kann, Gaye Henderson, Lyn Hill and Jan Hadfield for their efforts during the year.

Technical Officials

Clubs were responsible for providing technical officials on behalf of BWHA on all senior turf matches this

year, with the exception of Monday Masters. A number of volunteers attended a HQ technical course in

July with Greg Shirvington, Ray Long and John Luff receiving their Level 1 Theory and Practical awards

after the Veterans State Championships and Caroline Schomberg receiving hers after the National U15 Girls

Championships.

Conclusion

Thanks to everyone who provided assistance this year. All of the above takes time and effort and without a

hard-working Umpire and Technical Committee, it wouldn‟t happen!!

Lesley Bennett

Competition Operations (including Umpiring and Technical)

COMPETITIONS: RECORDING & REPORTING (MATCH SECRETARY REPORT)

I undertook this position this year in order to give one of our longstanding and hard working volunteers a

chance to spend more time with her family. On behalf of all in our association a very big thanks to Lyn

Thomas for her outstanding contribution. Lyn was very patient with me and did her best to help me

understand the machinations of this job and the history behind some rules and decisions.

My objective in taking on this role this year was to evaluate the usefulness of the database and the processes

involved in completing this task. The introduction of the database has resulted in duplication of work and

many manual systems are still operating in order to keep the checks and balances required. We need to get

the database working for us and get the reports we need to replace these manual systems. This should then

reduce the workload for our volunteers and office staff. The rules of our association need reviewing so as to

simplify the checks and balances as much as possible thus making it easier for clubs to comply and

management to enforce.

Unfortunately the flood put any changes for this season out of reach. It is hoped that we will make some

progress in the off season. It has been a trying season for all, but hopefully next year will be an

improvement.

DEVELOPMENT PORTFOLIO REPORT

REGIONAL DIRECTOR of COACHING (RDC)

After 3 months of long service leave, I returned to work in February feeling refreshed with renewed energy

for the season ahead. Little did I know that this would be put to the test during the challenging season

ahead. The saying “raining cats and dogs” was by far an understatement for the flood we experienced in

May. But, as is often the case in tough times “the tough get going” and I would like to thank everyone -

staff, management, friends, family and hockey community for their understanding and support given during

these time. It is incomprehensible the amount of work many personnel have done in particular Kathy

Page 14: Brisbane Women’s Hockey Association Inc.€¦ · Nikki Taylor (10) - 2005 Diana Young (10) - 2006 Helen Hill (10) - 2006 ... Page President’s Report 6 ... Umpires Portfolio 16

14 | P a g e

Proctor to get us all back on track in our new flood proof home “upstairs”. The impact of the floods has

been hard to measure and I am still now finding invaluable resources gathered over many years missing.

Despite the obvious disruptions to the season; lack of communication, no real place we could call an office

for over a month and all of the state championships occurring in the first 4 months of the season the

highlight has been the fantastic results our representative teams achieved. It has been a long time since we

have enjoyed such a high level of success winning all Division 1 State Championships titles from U13

through to Premier League.

Our teams‟ successes would not be possible without the hard work, time and expertise provided by our

support personnel, Coaches, Managers and Selectors. Many of these people already dedicate many hours to

their clubs and selflessly give their rare and valuable spare time to support the girls at the championships. I

am hugely indebted to all of you and thank you always for your continued assistance that should never be

underestimated.

BWHA players continue to impress selectors and congratulations to all those players who gained

recognition by being selected in Australian and Queensland Teams and Squads. On average Brisbane

players represented 35% to 65% of players selected in Queensland Teams & Squads. The names of these

players will appear in records section of the report.

The following development opportunities available for our players and coaches occurred in 2009:

Mark Rutter(former QAS Coach) supported BWHA by providing specialist sessions for our talent

identified U15, U18 and U21 players assisting them with their preparation for respective National

Championships and Camps.

BWHA provided teams to play against visiting and Rep teams, Papua New Guinea, U21

Development Team, U15 and U13 State Team.

Selection and Development programs were conducted from January – May numbers involved

below: Unfortunately, our U11 numbers were down and it seems likely due to rain interrupted

season. We look forward to increased participation next year.

BWHA team was successful again in winning the annual International Schools Southern Skies

Tournament held in July. Congratulations to Coach Kristin Muir who has continued to do a

fantastic job with the team ensuring the girls always gain valuable experience.

Specialist training sessions provided to our State, Squad and identified players as preparation for

their National championships and camps.

Skill Development Clinic in conjunction with BHA for U11-U15 players is planned for November.

In addition to these programs are the tireless efforts that Regina Fisher Development Officer has put into our

Participation programs conducted at schools, clubs and association level. Regie has also been instrumental

introducing many initiatives to our Rookey U7, U9 competition and U11 programs.

Unfortunately, several planned activities did not get underway given our disruptive season. A major aim for

2010 season will be to give priority to these projects in particular coaching workshops and “Gamebreaker”

education for representative coaches.

Summary

Congratulations and a huge thank-you to President Karin Walduck and Vice President Lisa Maree Jones for

their guidance and governance during this challenging year. I am grateful for their continued support and

being always available despite their very busy lives.

Debbie Wark also had her hands full taking on the Junior Chairperson role with rain and H1N1 providing

some interesting challenges and decisions to be made. I applaud both Debbie‟s leadership and the

hardworking Junior Committee for their tireless efforts and support in 2009.

To workmates Kathy Proctor, Kathryn Duggan, Sue Barsby and Regie Fisher who added new skills to their

resume…. “Clean up after floods” a huge big thanks and gratitude for a shared passion we have in our

work.

I look forward to next year, optimistic and confidant we are able to get back on track and make progress

with many of our planned programs. Wishing everyone health and happiness for the holiday season.

Sharyn Simpson

REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT OFFICER (RDO)

As we say farewell to the 2009 Hockey season, it is great to look back and reflect on the great year that was

2009. Even though there were great hurdles placed on our path, still the Hockey Community, Management

& BWHA staff made the season a great success.

In 2009 the U7 & U9 Rookey competition was returned to Rasey Park, which looked great for the season

kick off. Once again Hockey became a great morning out for all the family with Parents, Players &

Supporters able to enjoy the game with a Cup of Coffee and a BBQ Bacon & Egg Muffin. Thanks to Kath

& Kev for volunteering their time over the season, your efforts lifted the atmosphere at Rasey Park. Thanks

also to Abigail Orr who assisted with co-ordinating U7 & U9 games at Rasey Park this year. Players were

treated with a free sausage sizzle to celebrate the end the season.

U11 Development was held earlier to coincide with the AHL games being held in Brisbane, participants

were given the opportunity to participate in Rookey, entertainment, games between matches and able to

watch some very inspiring hockey with Queensland Blades & Scorchers taking on the Northern Territory.

U7 & U9 kids enjoyed a “Champions Trophy” Skills day at Rasey Park. Thanks must go to all of our great

Club Coaches, Managers and teams for participating again this year. Guest coaches in attendance this year

were Sam Pavish, Leigh McCormick, Stacey Nellar and Jill Dwyer. A huge thanks and congratulations to

these ladies, as they have all recently achieved State selection or even higher. It is such an honour to have

them as guest coaches for our development programs, their continued support to BWHA and our Junior

players is greatly appreciated.

Q150 U11 Southern Cross was held on August 2 at Downey Park. The Q150 Committee, Life Members,

Management & Staff worked tirelessly to organise this event. Players participated in a traditional march

past the club house where the invited guests enjoyed the official flag raising celebrating Queensland‟s 150th

Birthday with the opening of our Memorabilia display and watched a display game showcasing historic

uniforms & equipment. Brisbane fielded 4 teams in 2009, thanks to some very inspiring Coaches and great

Managers all teams had a fantastic experience. Thanks to all the participants who attended trials in very wet

and cold conditions.

I would like to congratulate all the players who were selected in Brisbane and Queensland teams in 2009,

your dedication to training & playing hockey is very inspirational. I was very grateful for the opportunity to

Coach the Brisbane 4 team at the Queensland U13 State Championships in Warwick this year, the

experience and opportunity was invaluable. The Brisbane 4 team were undefeated during the tournament

and congratulations again for making it to the Division 2 Grand final, unfortunately Hervey Bay 1 were

victorious on the day. Thank you to all the Brisbane teams and supporters who watched our game and

cheered us on, your support was very inspiring. Congratulations to Brisbane 1 who where valiant in their

Div 1 Grand final with a confident win and were crowned as U13 State Champions. I eagerly look forward

to watching the bright future of these players. Thank you to Candice & Anne for all your assistance during

the week.

BWHA was asked to billet a team of 20 players from Hutcheson‟s Grammar School in Scotland, a huge

thanks to those families that showed great hospitality and generosity by assisting with this request. The

team enjoyed a 3 night stay in Brisbane on their way home to Scotland. Thanks to BSHS for taking on the

match challenge against the very well drilled and strong Hutcheson‟s during this time.

Thanks to everyone at BWHA for their continued support of my role as RDO. This year in addition to

school visits, we are excited to be participating in “Have a Go” sports days and the BCC Active Parks

program with “Hockey in the Park” in an aim to increase players and club promotion for the 2010 season.

With this in mind I wish you all a safe & happy holiday season and great success in 2010.

UNIFORMS & EQUIPMENT & TOURS REPORT

Tours – What a year with U18 Championships being played in May (4 months early) and the floods playing

havoc with nominations, trials and Tournaments, we had a very busy 4 months (Feb to May). We almost

took out every Championships/Tournament this year – our U11‟s were placed 2nd

to deny us of a clean

sweep. Thank you to all Managers and Coaches for the time put into each team and the great results by all

teams say it all. Congratulations of all players who made Qld teams, who made Shadows and who were TI

(talent identified).

This year in apparel we had a sponsor – MMI – who sponsored the “Hoodies” for all junior teams (what a

great price $10.00). Also, the cap at U11‟s was very much appreciated as well. We also introduced this

year the “Supporter‟s Jersey” – these too were a big hit so we will continue to supply them for years to

come. It was also our first year for gold socks (HA ruling) – many comments were made at Championships

on how well they went with our playing uniform (almost better than the cherry socks!!)

Sales on all other apparel were up as new players are becoming involved with rep teams. Next year‟s

Championships are: U13 Atherton (only 3 teams will be sent due to lack of accommodation and costs)

U15 Murwillumbah (3 teams)

U18 Brisbane (3 teams)

Premier League & Opens Townsville (only 2 teams will be sent due to relegations)

Vets Warwick (again only 5 teams can be sent due to lack of accommodation)

Uniform & Equipment - This year we bought more smaller blue & cherry skirts to outfit our U13 teams and

larger blue skirts to accommodate up to 4 Vets teams. Next year we will buy more smaller playing tops for

our U13 teams and new uniforms for our “Scorpions”. We are hoping to have every Brisbane team in our

new playing uniform from next year. I hope everyone noticed our new orange goalie smocks – they did

stand out! Thank you to Rhonda Bentley, Jenny Tidey and the team managers who assisted with all the

uniform allocations and returns.

Sue Barsby

CANTEEN CONVENOR REPORT

Having taken on the position of Canteen Coordinator virtually at the last minute, I had a bit to learn and it

took me a few weeks to get used to everything. Because I was unavailable during the week due to

university commitments I relied on Sue Barsby for the ordering and Joyce Proctor and the other BWHA

staff for the food preparation on Fridays. Whilst this may seem a little disjointed it actually worked very

well and is a model we should consider using again in 2010. I would also like to thank my mother Karin

who helped and supported me throughout the season.

Running the canteen during 2009 was quite difficult at times. The frequent wet weather meant that patron

numbers could not be predicted from week to week, making food ordering and preparation quite difficult.

And just as we were getting settled we had the flood in May. Then the frequent double-headers on Sundays

for catch-up games and other events meant that regular Saturday staff was not always available and we had

to rely on volunteers to help with sales. In particular I would like to thank all the BWHA staff and

Management, as well as parents and supporters who helped out in the canteen for the Southern Cross U11

Tournament. This was one of our busiest days of the year and without them we just would not have coped.

In spite of all this the canteen performed well and provided a net income for BWHA as well as providing a

much appreciated service to the hockey community.

UMPIRES PORTFOLIO

TURF UMPIRES’ STEWARD REPORT

2009 saw the allocation of umpires being undertaken by Kathy Proctor (Div 1 & 2 with the input of Jan

Hadfield) and Sonya Fisher (Div 3 – 5).

While some clubs continued to work on developing their umpires (both in respect to quality and quantity),

others were reliant on either a small or decreasing pool of umpires or umpires from outside their own club.

2009 also saw a lot of first time senior turf umpires.

Unfortunately, BWHA does not have the resources to mentor turf umpires on a regular basis. However, all

players should have an expectation that the umpire who turns up to do their game (hopefully on time and

Page 17: Brisbane Women’s Hockey Association Inc.€¦ · Nikki Taylor (10) - 2005 Diana Young (10) - 2006 Helen Hill (10) - 2006 ... Page President’s Report 6 ... Umpires Portfolio 16

17 | P a g e

dressed appropriately) has a reasonable knowledge of what is required and is willing to apply that

knowledge consistently and fairly.

Again BWHA must thank Jan Hadfield (Div 1-2) and Heather Scraggs (Div 3-5) for their advice and

assistance throughout the year and in Jan‟s case, someone we can go to regularly for answers /

interpretations. Also thanks to our International umpires: Lynn Cowie-McAllister, Annette Asplin, Lyn Hill

and Aleeta Micallef.

BWHA continues to have good representation at National Championships with Kathryn Foster and

Catherine Costello attending National U18s, Katrina Nitarski – National U15s and Sonya Fisher – National

Women‟s Veterans. Many of our top line umpires and umpire coaches again worked at National and State

Championships teaching the next generation of umpires and we thank them for giving back to our sport in

this very valuable way.

The allocations this year were difficult due to the expansion of our turf competitions eg Div 1 going to 10

teams, which meant that clubs often played Div 1 & 2 in consecutive games, which made allocations

interesting for Kathy (to say the least). Also, given that a lot of clubs had very “flexible” turf umpiring

registers and often submitted their registers based on their belief that all of their Div 1 and 2 players should

be able (and willing) to umpire, Sunday fixtures often saw:

Substitute umpires;

Umpires turning up who “had never umpired before and don‟t know why they have been allocated”;

Allocated umpires contacting BWHA to advise that they couldn‟t do their allocation rather than finding

a replacement from their own club; and

Thankfully not too often, umpires who just didn‟t turn up.

In 2010, the Fixtures and Grading Committee will be looking for clubs to have suitable umpires within their

own playing ranks and for turf umpire registers to be submitted with team lists - recognising the importance

that BWHA places on clubs developing their own umpires as well as their players.

Kathy Proctor and Sonya Fisher

Turf Umpire Steward

GRASS UMPIRES STEWARD’S REPORT During 2009, Senior Umpires at Downey Park, clubs were required to self umpire each team that they had

registered in divisions DP3 to DP5 and to supply at least one suitable umpire for each team that they had

registered in divisions DP1 and DP2, in order to have an allocation of umpires equal to the number of games

that they played each week.

Clubs, teams and umpires themselves, spoke of advantages and disadvantages to this system.

Advantages were predominantly seen in the lower divisions where clubs are self umpiring.

Disadvantages occurred across all levels.

Advantages:

The number of „fail to show‟ incidences was greatly reduced. Especially for own-club allocations.

The quality of umpires supplied for own-club allocations was generally very good.

Umpire abuse was greatly reduced for own-club allocations.

The opportunity to mentor beginner umpires „in-house‟ on own-club games was a bonus.

Enforcing clubs to field an umpire for each DP1 and DP2 that they had registered meant the

workload was reduced for those badged umpires from a few clubs who previously have been

covering for the shortfall from other clubs, whether or not they had teams registered in those

divisions.

In order to fulfil their obligations when logistics played havoc with their supply, interaction

between clubs, especially those with three or less teams, resulted in very equitable trade-offs and

win-win solutions.

Disadvantages:

Small and single team clubs, with a small pool of umpires, often in the same team, had problems

logistically. Often the smaller clubs were supplying quality umpires at all levels but did not always

receive quality umpiring in return on their higher graded teams.

Clubs without umpires suitable to umpire DP1 and DP2 often submitted names en-masse and asked

that the list be worked through. These were generally large clubs. Frequently, then, the umpire so

named would find another umpire to replace themselves.

Page 18: Brisbane Women’s Hockey Association Inc.€¦ · Nikki Taylor (10) - 2005 Diana Young (10) - 2006 Helen Hill (10) - 2006 ... Page President’s Report 6 ... Umpires Portfolio 16

18 | P a g e

Clubs often went shopping for umpires from other clubs to fill their allocations. This missed

opportunity to train their own umpires, this may have been deliberate or logistic.

The element of bias by an own umpire towards their own team whether deliberate or not was often

exaggerated.

Badged umpires from clubs without DP1 and DP2 teams had reduced opportunity to umpire at the

level for which they were qualified.

Overall, clubs took care to allocate strong umpires to their own teams when self umpiring, either by using

their own umpires or by paying badged umpires from other clubs, but sometimes didn‟t apply the same care

to ensuring that they supplied suitable umpires to matches not involving their own club. Often the

beginner/inexperienced umpires that were named for DP1 and DP2 attended games unassisted and/or for the

first time ever and often they were from Turf teams with little experience on Grass. Large clubs were most

at fault.

Overall the percentage of umpires per club is low. The percentage of badged umpires is even lower.

Especially for the large clubs. In order that the burden on the few umpires can be reduced and so that teams

are not umpired by the same umpires week after week all clubs need to work towards increasing their supply

of quality umpires. I would suggest that each club needs at least four different umpires, qualified or being

mentored, of the required standard for each team they have playing in each competition.

All umpires who did do their allocations are to be congratulated. A couple were allocated their badges.

Most umpires turned up on time at the right place and carried out their task willingly and skilfully, even

while being overworked and underpaid.

Thank you and well done.

CONSTITUTION COMMITTEE REPORT

The Constitution of BWHA was written over twenty years ago. Since the 1980‟s there have been

unimaginable changes in daily life. The pace of life has quickened, and we are now all time poor. When

the Constitution was written in the 1980‟s there was no way we could foresee the many new ways we have

to communicate with one another or the ability to do such things as banking on the Internet. It became

obvious that the Constitution needed to be brought into the present so that decisions could be made more

quickly to match out current lifestyle, and that it should allow the use of all the electronic means at our

disposal. With that in mind, after the last AGM, the Board of Management agreed that a new Constitution

should be written.

Over the 2008 Christmas holidays, and during January 2009, I wrote a draft of the new document which was

e-mailed to all members of the Constitution Committee and the Board of Management for comment and

review. All necessary amendments were made in the following month. The final document was presented to

the Board of Management for their ratification and recommendation to the BWHA Council Meeting on 24

March 2009. Approval was obtained at that meeting for the new Constitution to be submitted to the

Department of Justice and Attorney General for registration. Since that time, the Constitution Committee

has been in abeyance waiting for an answer from the State Government.

On 16 September 2009, BWHA was sent a letter from Registration Services, Community Justice Services,

Department of Justice and Attorney General, advising them that the new Constitution had been approved

and registered. Nominees for the Constitution Committee should be aware, however, that this does not

mean that all the work has been done. Another major task awaits; that is the writing of the new Operations

Manual which will encompass all the By-Laws and Policies of BWHA.

I am pleased to have been able to assist BWHA in this undertaking. Thank-you to all involved.

VETERAN SELECTORS REPORT

This year there were upwards of 120 nominations for Brisbane teams for the state championships at the

Sunshine Coast. Brisbane requested six teams and management‟s input to selectors was to include players

Page 19: Brisbane Women’s Hockey Association Inc.€¦ · Nikki Taylor (10) - 2005 Diana Young (10) - 2006 Helen Hill (10) - 2006 ... Page President’s Report 6 ... Umpires Portfolio 16

in the 6th

team that may be included in a QLD 60+ or 55+ team. This is important as at this age level

nominations are scarce at a State level.

Normally when selecting Brisbane vets teams a combination of trials, turf fixtures and grass fixtures are

watched. This year was unusual because of the flooding at Downey Park, which meant that grass fixtures

were not seen therefore trials became our main selection tool. Roughly equal numbers (60 players) were

brought to turf and grass trials. Players were also seen at masters fixtures and turf fixtures.

Issues and Results

A large number of players failed to make a Brisbane team due to the large number of nominations.

However, this happens at other age levels and players are often accommodated by other centres. BWHA

Recommendations

1. 3 selectors and proxy (4 selectors in total) should be upgraded to 5 selectors if nominations allow

or at least 4.

2. A shorter time frame for nominations to be due in to Brisbane by clubs, thus allowing more

selecting time.

3. No late nominations especially as numbers are large.

4. Continued use of trials and games as selection tools and yearly review of Southern Cross

Tournament as a trial.

Finally I would like to thank my co-selectors Robyn Anderson, Noreen Walton and Jenny Heron for their

time and effort. Also the BWHA staff who despite floods, competition fixtures and large nomination

numbers, managed to compile and get information out to clubs.

PROPERTY & FACILITIES PORTFOLIO REPORT

The elements certainly worked against us again this year, posing the extreme challenges of two floods,

several washed out game days, and then a very dry end of season.

My thanks to the BWHA staff for their amazing efforts in cleaning and recovering from the floods of Nov

2008 which caused significant damage to office equipment, communication systems, grounds, the canteens

at Rasey and Downey Park, and the equipment, first aid and Just Hockey sheds. Following much hard clean

up work, negotiation with Insurance companies and a well supported working bee the 2009 season

commenced in fine form while I was on an extended overseas holiday.

The floods of May not only caused massive damage and loss, but were also a serious blow to staff who

again bravely dealt with the physical loss, lingering odours, constraints on day to day work and

psychological trauma of an inundated workplace. The recovery efforts, including relocation of the office

to the upstairs clubhouse continue, and would not have been as successful without the fantastic help of

volunteers from our clubs and individual members. Special thanks to all who responded to our call for a

special working bee on Saturday 26 May and particularly to Committee Member Joyce Proctor who

volunteered endless hours in the drying, sorting and storing of damaged office and historical records.

The fields continue to recover from the silt deposits, with grounds staff John Bigg and Noala Gordon

nursing the damaged fields through the remainder of the season.

This off-season sees us with the challenge of progressing a number of issues including irrigation

requirements, upgrade of field surfaces and investigation of funding options towards installation of a water

tank and the goal box replacement program.

In addition to the above challenges posed by the elements, we were saddened to learn just weeks before

season start that our long serving canteen convenor would not return for the 2009 season. Thanks to Kristin

Walduck for taking on the role at short notice and providing a fantastic quality of product and service over

the season. Thanks also to Kath Proctor and Kevin Ralph for cooking up a storm at Rasey Park every

Saturday morning. The competition between Downey and Rasey canteens for best bacon and egg muffin

remains a tight draw, the winners being our loyal customers who have supported the canteens into a

financially profitable situation. Again, many thanks to volunteers who gave hours in preparation, cooking

and cleaning to support BWHA in providing a fresh food product, particularly on the weekends of double

headers and tournaments. The goal for our 2010 season is to build on the great work established this year,

finalise repairs from the flood damage and incorporate suggestions for improvement received from our

hockey community.

Thanks Denise Byrne, Caroline Schomberg, Wendy Proctor & Angela “Bud” Coleman for their care of the

bar. While we had to cancel a number of clubhouse bookings due to the impact of the floods, I am pleased

to see that teams are using the upstairs bar as a venue to wind down and socialise after their game and hope

to see all over a beverage in 2010. The bar is open on Saturday from 12.30 – 6pm.

And, on a final note, thanks to everyone who assisted me during the season, especially Karin Walduck, the

P& F committee, BWHA staff, the Junior Committee members and parents who shouldered responsibility

for setting up weekly and all of our amazing volunteers.

EVENTS AND PROMOTIONS REPORT

The BWHA Events portfolio continued its growth in 2009. Building on the success of last years inaugural

combined Turf Awards Dinner with BHA, a similar – but significantly more affordable event was held this

season. Once again both positive and constructive feedback was received. We are committed to making

this function one that is highly regarded by players and one that is a must on everyone‟s hockey calendar.

A big thank you to Col and Bernie for comparing the evening for us – it was a great success.

Due to the relocation of the offices reducing the available space upstairs, the Grass Dinner was held on the

grassed area between the club house and field 1 on a balmy Saturday afternoon on a Semi final double

header, Saturday evening. It was a very relaxed and enjoyable afternoon which we also can build on for

next season.

Events also chipped in and helped out Deb Wark with the running of the Q150 Southern Cross Carnival – it

was fantastic to see all of those teams out there marching with their flags – truly a sight to be beheld. It was

also a privilege to have so many life members, long service award recipients and invited guests – all on the

balcony of DP for the march past – they are an amazing group that have done so much for hockey.

Grand Final days & subsequent presentations continue to become a little bit smoother every year as our

experience grows. We are very appreciative to HQ on Lytton for providing complimentary trays of hot

nibbles for all senior turf grand finalists and soft drinks to the juniors. We have added a bit of pizzazz on

Grand Final day by having music out on the fields and also announcing players and officials on the day – it

seems that regardless of age – people enjoy having their name echo around the hallowed turf at SHC!

From me personally – a huge thank you to particularly Kathryn and Deb for continually helping out (we

would not have got our noses past the post without you two) – particularly as the bulk of the Portfolio‟s

activity really happens in the tail end of the season in really only a few short weeks. Karin & Kath – thank

you for your support and guidance and prompting – heaven knows it‟s needed. To the Management Group

– thank you for your tolerance of my lack of experience and general hockey knowledge – although it does

seem to bring us some humour on many occasions!

The primary vision for Events is to continue to help clubs and the association rebuild the connection

amongst all players, supporters and officials. There are so many of us that talk about how it used to be, and

also how blessed we are to have life long friends through hockey – it would be truly fantastic if we can pass

on a little bit of that culture to the current & forthcoming group of players at all levels - and we are well on

the way – bring on 2010.

Q150 COMMITTEE REPORT

What a fantastic day we had. Teams came from all over Brisbane, Maryborough, Toowoomba, Gympie, Tweed,

Warwick, Ipswich, Redlands, Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast.

A committee was formed to make sure this day was special as we are very proud of Brisbane Women‟s Hockey history

and wanted to showcase it to our local Associations on the day. Whilst the day was centred around our U11 Southern

Cross Tournament the focus on the day was the “Q150 Past meets Present” celebrating the history of Brisbane

Women‟s Hockey.

What a fantastic job they did and with many hours of hard work organising the day many friendships were made along

the way. Our life members spent many Saturdays putting together photos, stories and reminiscing the good old days.

We had some old representatives uniforms framed which are now proudly displayed in our club house to be enjoyed by

all future players.

On a typical winter‟s morning, the day kicked off at 8.15am with games being played. 10.30 saw the traditional march

past with all the U11 players, coaches and managers marching around the field and lining up in front of our life

members who were watching from the club house balcony waving their Q150 supporter flags. The Hon Grace Grace

officially opened the day and thanked the many supporters for joining in such a wonderful celebration. This was

followed by an Exhibition game with some of our Veteran players including many ex Australian players vs. our U11

development players. Games then continued during the day winding up at 4pm for the presentations. A fantastic day

was had by all the players and their families.

We had contacted the Courier Mail and Quest News to cover our events and also recorded the day on the official Q150

website. Flyers were sent to all our Association members to join in the day and many caught up with friends they had

not seen for many years.

We received many compliments from all the centres on the day about how much fun it was and how well the day was

run. They particularly enjoyed the march past as this has not been done for many years. They also enjoyed the many

displays of uniforms, equipment and photos that were collected for the day.

Thanks to the Q150 grant, we now have an archive of the BWHA history which will be used at functions in the future.

We were also able to purchase a marquee, cabinets for storage and display and a plaque to commemorate the day.

COMMUNICATIONS REPORT

Following a lot of planning, Hockey Brisbane, a joint name for BWHA and BHA proceeded with an

agreement, with QCTV to record and broadcast, Brisbane Div 1 games for the Women and Men.

The games were recorded every second Saturday afternoon, two games, one women‟s and one men‟s –

Matches of the week. There was a minimum of ten recording days. Twenty weeks of telecast. The venue

for the recording was the main field at the State Hockey Centre, Colmslie.

At the beginning of the season all games were filmed at 3 pm and 4:30 pm but as we got into the middle of

the season the lighting conditions varied on the 3 pm game with harsh shadows thrown across the field by

the grandstand making it difficult technically wise. The 3 pm games were changed to the 1:30 pm timeslot

and the 4:30 pm games were under lights and this made it easier to control the camera exposures.

A number of people were involved in the behind the scenes for the filming of the games. Bernie Pangrazio

was our main commentator for every game. Lauren Richards, Kirsten Drysdale and Nikki Taylor were also

on our commentary team but when the game times were changed it was difficult for the girls to help due to

work commitments, coaching, playing and umpiring. Thank you girls for all the volunteered time you put

into these games. Also thank you to all our other commentators for filling in when needed.

Thank you Lyn Thomas, Cheryl Kann and Ronda Nix our Tech Officials who also provided a big role in the

filming of these games.

To Lisa-Maree Jones thank you for all your support and help throughout the season I really appreciated it.

JUNIOR CHAIRPERSON’S REPORT

Wow what a year! Firstly I would like to acknowledge Desley Mackay and her commitment to the junior girls

for the past 9 years – thanks Desley.

It has certainly been a busy year, thank you to the new Junior Management Committee Margie Brown, Sue

Carey, Lorraine Carroll, Pam Nitarski and Sonya Taylor for their time and effort this year we have had a great

team and a successful year considering having to deal with two floods and swine flu.

Our fixture and grading committee had the usual hard task of grading at the beginning of the season. Thank you

for your time and effort here, the season was very close and all teams had some good competition in all grades.

Thank you also to Sharyn Simpson, Sue Barsby, Regie Fisher, Kathy Proctor and Kathryn Duggan for your

wonderful support to the players, club officials and management committee your knowledge and support at all

times was greatly appreciated.

Congratulations to Sharyn and staff on such a successful representative season with our U13 & 15 girls winning

the State Championships. A huge thank you to the selectors, coaches and managers for your time and

commitment to the girls this was reflected in such good on field results.

We would also like to thank the many staff who helped to make our Saturday‟s run smoothly.

Charlie who looked after the office on Saturday‟s.

Amy Zale and Kate McDonald for keeping our games on time.

John Thomas and Sam Green our sports trainers looking after our players.

Kristin and Karin Walduck and the entire canteen staff for such wonderful service.

Kath & Kev who made fantastic and much talked about bacon & egg burgers at Rasey Park.

Our U7 & U9 co-ordinators Abbi Orr & Kathryn Duggan

Clarrie Hicks, Jenny Herron, Caroline Schomberg, Kathryn Foster and Naomi Crase did a great job every week

running the tech benches and mentoring our umpires.

Thank you to Margie Brown who is retiring from Junior Management after many years of hard work helping to

develop and assess our umpires.

To all the BWHA staff, committees, hockey families and the many volunteers thank you for your support -

enjoy your break and look forward to what 2010 holds for us.

JUNIOR MATCH SECRETARY REPORT

After a difficult season to manage both from a club‟s point of view and most definitely from an administration

side it was a flood or drought for all of us as well. This being my first year and feeling my way I must say

thanks to Kath Proctor, Debbie Wark and the hard working committee members who offered support to a

novice. I must confess to asking what must seem like silly questions, but I was always greeted with a good

direct response.

As for the match sheets I had to process, I must admit it was quite frustrating to process at times, I intend to

have clear guide lines for all team managers by the start of 2010. Knowing my role better I will aim to

streamline, for next year and the future. This will cut the processing time by up to 75% hopefully.

JUNIOR COMPETITIONS REPORT

What a season 2009 threw at us with the weather! 20 clubs nominated teams into the junior competition this

year. Our Grading Committee of Sue Barsby, Pam Nitarski, Chris O‟Sullivan and Margie Brown worked hard

to ensure that teams were placed into the appropriate divisions. This was not a hard task in the Turf Divisions of

JT1, JT2 and JT3 but the Grass Divisions proved a little more challenging with the weather.

TURF

24 Teams were nominated into the JT1, JT2 and JT3 division. Fortunately, Clubs nominated their teams into

divisions to which their ability matched. Only one club did not receive their nominated division. Feedback was

given upon their request and their season reflected that they were placed correctly into JT2.

GRASS

Grading teams this year proved to be a difficult task due to the delay in the start of the season and then the wet

days that followed. The experience of our Grading Committee showed in this situation and teams were

generally placed into the correct divisions. 19 teams were nominated into the JG competition and 70 teams into

U11 – U13 which were made up of 3 divisions (A – C). U11B comprised of 12 teams and once the first round

was played the division was split into two.

All in all, it was an interesting season with the rain, swine flu and the associated problems. Congratulations to

those clubs who won premierships (many were drawn!) and I certainly look forward to 2010.

JUNIOR UMPIRES REPORT

With the start of the season cancelled for weeks at a time, it seemed like it was half over before we started to

assess the umpires that had nominated for field testing. With many clubs having their members go online to

achieve their umpiring theory pass, it made for many wanting to be tested both at grass level and quite a few at

our J turf games.

Thanks to the ladies who came out each Friday night and mentored each of the umpires and improvement was

noticed as the season went on.

We had many umpires to test each Saturday morning which is a good indication that clubs are doing the work

and putting back into the game. As without umpires the game won‟t happen. Thanks to Pam Nitaski who

became my other set of eyes on Saturdays and together we were able to watch and give feedback to the umpires

after their games. This year was probably the first in a long time to have umpires who had been tested

throughout the season do most of the semis and grand finals. Well done to all.

Clubs must keep the umpire training going, with consistent umpires the game is played in a calm manner. This

also helps BWHA in recommending young umpires to go to State championships to gain higher accreditation.

Let‟s hope 2010 is even better than 2009.

Yours in Hockey

U7 & U9 MANAGEMENT REPORT

It was wonderful to see the return of the under 7 and under 9 competition to Rasey Park, even if we did have a

wet start to the season.

Thanks to all who contributed to getting the clubhouse and grounds ready for the season with the working bee

and all that came to help out with the cleaning after the floods.

The season started with an information morning for coaches and managers of all the teams, this was to help

them understand the rules so they could pass on to the kids. This seemed to work well as in previous years.

This year we introduced boys into the competition and from all reports this was successful. Under 7 continued

to play the new rules of encouraging the use of zones and that has also received positive feedback. Under 9

have enjoyed their year as well, allowing them to improve their skills on the larger field. Those who had come

from the under 7 competition in 2008 had a greater understanding of positional play, which will only continue to

improve as the players come though the under 7 competition.

I would like to thank the girls that organised the games, answered the many questions parents had and anything

else that was required each week - Abbi Orr and Kathryn Duggan. Regie Fisher did a great job for the

organising of the skills day, along with Sharyn Simpson. To Kath and Kev for the BBQ breakfast and the coffee

people who came along each week to help make it an enjoyable morning for the parents and the kids. Also to

the girls in the canteen each week Katrina Wark and Mel Hickling.

I would like to thank all of the coaches, managers and parents of all the teams from all of the clubs for their

time, effort and patience to help with the introduction of hockey to under 7 and under 9 players. Once they have

the love of hockey, it can only improve and grow our sport and allow life time enjoyment for all.

U7 & U9 CO-ORDINATORS REPORT

After a difficult year of wetness and disruptions to the 2009 season, it was always great to go to Rasey Park on a

Saturday morning and see the kids smiling, just glad to be playing hockey. I started as the co-ordinator half way

through the season after Abigail had to finish due to school hockey commitments. Abi did a great job with

starting the season and making sure the goal nets were brought in and out before and after each game (it was

always hard trying to drag 8 nets in before the JG3‟s started), made sure everyone knew which field they were

playing on and kept the time for the games.

Thank you to Kathy & Kev for running the BBQ every Saturday morning, to Doppio‟s Coffee, the Canteen

Staff, Atherli Cross for her work as the sports trainer and to Regie Fisher who did a great deal of work at Rasey

Park and organised the Skills Day. The skills day had a great turn out – next year we look to expand on what

has been created this year.

Congratulations to all players, coaches, umpires & parents who came along every week and enjoyed themselves.

It was great to see so much family atmosphere at the grounds each week, which was helped by the inclusion of

the boys playing in the competition – this allowed families to have both kids playing together or at the one

venue. I hope that in 2010 the U7 & U9 competition keeps growing and that kids enjoy playing hockey &

parents enjoy watching them. In 2010 it would be great to see more people on management and supporting the

association by volunteering and lending a hand, no job is too small!
