Use Grass Clippings as Mulch on Your LawnThe next time you mow your yard, leave your grass clippings on the lawn instead of putting in the compost.

Grass clippings will quickly break down, returning nutrients to the soil for a healthy yard. Grass mulching will help you save time and effort from bag-ging up grass clippings, buying paper yard waste bags or needing to apply fertilizer to your lawn.

• Cut grass when the surface is dry and keep mower blades sharp. • Follow the 1/3 rule: mow your lawn often enough so that no more than

1/3 your grass is cut. You may need to raise the height of your mower. This frequent mowing will produce short clippings that will break down quickly.

• You can leave clippings on the lawn with almost any mower (push, elec-tric or gas). Using your existing mower, simply remove the bag and leave the clippings on the lawn. Mulching mowers cut grass blades into smaller pieces, allowing the clippings to settle into your lawn without clumping. They are sold at most yard and garden stores, nurseries and home supply stores.

For more tips, visit calgary.ca/grassclippings.

TAKE ON WELLNESS

Heartburn and acid regurgitation are common. They happen when food in the stomach backs up into the esophagus (the food pipe that leads from the mouth to the stomach).

This is often referred to as reflux or GERD (Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease). It is uncomfortable and, over time, may damage the esophagus lining. It often occurs because the circular muscle that connects the food pipe and stomach is too relaxed and stays open after meals. Other contributors to heartburn include smoking, being overweight, alcohol, caffeine, spicy foods, some medicines, and stress.

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are medicines com-monly used to treat reflux. They are acid blockers. They decrease the amount of acid that the stomach makes, which lessens reflux symptoms.

More than 10 per cent of Albertans fill a PPI prescription each year. While PPIs are effective at treating heartburn, they are often only needed for a short time. In many cases, heartburn medicines are only needed for four to eight weeks.

PPIs are generally safe. However, they can cause head-ache, nausea, diarrhea (rarely), malabsorption of some important nutrients, and rashes.

Some people need to take a PPI for a long time. People who may need to continue taking a PPI include those with severe reflux disease; a condition called Bar-rett’s esophagus; long-term use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (such as ibuprofen); stomach ulcer prevention; or a history of bleeding stomach ulcers.

People over the age of 18 who have been taking a PPI for more than four to eight weeks can talk to their doc-

tor, nurse practitioner or pharmacist about whether stopping a PPI is the right choice for them. Doctors, nurse practitioners or pharmacists can help to decide on the best approach to using less medicine. They can advise on how to reduce the dose, whether to stop it altogether, or how to make lifestyle changes that can prevent heartburn symptoms from returning.

Reducing the dose might involve taking the PPI once daily instead of twice daily, lowering the PPI dosage, or taking the PPI every second day for some time before stopping. Others may only need to use the drug occa-sionally to relieve symptoms.

If heartburn or stomach pain returns after reducing or stopping a PPI, talk to your doctor, nurse or pharmacist, or call Health Link at 811.

Heartburn can also be reduced without medication by avoiding triggers (such as coffee, alcohol, and spicy foods), avoiding food two to three hours before bed-time, and losing weight.

Local Craft Beer Tasting My Summer Adventure by Renée Delorme, Sommelier [email protected]

I might be a sommelier who revels in all that is wine, but, by gosh, I can’t think of anything more satisfying than a quenching pint of cold beer on a hot summer day. And I’m not the only one.

Mesopotamian cultures brewed the first beers some 10,000 years ago. Beer, as we know it, came about in the 12th century with hops in Ale, and the Lager method was introduced in the mid-19th century. From there, countless styles have developed. Selecting a beer today has become a daunting task. Here are a few pointers to help you out.

At its most basic, beers are classified into three catego-ries defined by the type of yeasts they use. I will only cover the first two: • Ale uses the Saccharomyces cerevisiae - a warm, top-

fermenting yeast.• Lager (aka Pilsner) - uses the Saccharomyces uvarum -

a cold, bottom-fermenting yeast.• Lambic uses wild yeast.

Because of the type of yeast used, Ales are a fruitier, spic-ier, fuller bodied and somewhat bitter beer (think Eng-lish Ale). In contrast, a Pilsners takes longer to make and are brewed in colder conditions, resulting in a crisper, lighter, smoother drink (think German Lager).

Beyond these fundamental differences, the two types of beer use similar ingredients and approaches. Both use hops, grains (barley, oat, corn, rice) malted (roasted) to different degrees, and flavourings, such as spices and fruits, to add interest. As a result, selecting a beer can be daunting.

Brewers invest passion, sweat, and tears into their craft. This is why we owe it to them to overcome our sense of confusion and understand what they are offering, re-warding in the process those who brew quality.

One way to do this is by assessing the beer’s ‘balance’. This is perhaps the most elusive yet defining charac-teristic of a good beer. For example, a Pale ale can be watery, leaving little after taste. In contrast, another can

leave a crisp, lingering citrusy finish that begs you for more. Beyond personal preferences, you know the beer is “in balance” when the flavours, the aromatics, and the mouthfeel are in proportion with one another. With practice (meaning mindful beer tasting), you will learn to recognize a good craft beer.

I invite you to engage in beer tastings with friends and family. It is a lot of fun. First, decide if you want to ex-plore, Ale or Lager. Then, pick a couple of styles within your category. If you choose Ale, you may wish to ex-plore Pale, Amber and Stout. Buy two different beers of each from local breweries. Don’t hesitate to ask your re-tailer for guidance. Find a beer chart to guide your tast-ing (many are available on the web), pour the beer and Voilà! Sit down, taste, discuss, argue, understand and have fun.

Use this summer pandemic as an opportunity to dis-cover local breweries. Learn about their styles. Compare them. Find out which you like most. There are over 61 breweries (yup!) in and around Calgary alone. If you are looking for more, Canmore, Banff, and pretty much all

the small towns in Alberta enjoy a brewery they can call their own. To plan your excursions, go to www.yycbeer.ca for the lasted inventories of breweries complete with a map to find them. Knowing a little bit about Alberta craft beer and pairing them with food will go a long way to elevate your enjoyment of both.

Happy dog days of summer!

Beer and Food Pairing: • Pale lager and Ale love creamy food that begs for lem-

on wedges (Fish and chips, caesar salads, fettuccine alfredo).

• IPA or amber ales match well salty, spices and fried food (East Indian food, chicken wings, pizza).

• Red and Brown ales wash down hamburgers, steaks delightfully.

• Porter and stouts stand out to the rich roasted, smoked, BBQ, even salty meats such as ribs, pulled pork and sausages.

DOLLARS & SENSE

Travel agencies take the number one spot on the Better Business Bureau’s (BBB) list of most industry complaints during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pan-demic. Airlines and vacation rentals rounded out the top three with 2,565 and 2,089 complaints and reviews, respectively. Between March and May 2020, BBB received more than 53,000 complaints and re-views. This represents a 280 percent increase over a three-month period.

Consumers who are making travel plans should con-sider these BBB tips to avoid disappointments: •Check with country regulations for quarantine

requirements. Some countries are still requiring visitors to isolate for 14 days when visiting the coun-try or coming back home. •Carefully research cancellation policies before

making reservations. If you were hoping to travel somewhere later this year, understand what kind of cancellation policy is available for the tickets you would like to purchase. Cruise companies, airlines, hotels, Airbnbs and other travel-related cancella-tion policies are rapidly changing because of the pandemic. •Consider buying travel insurance, but read the

small print. Travel insurance is a great way to re-

Travel Industry Hit Hard by Consumer Complaints

ceive a full refund if you need to cancel a trip, but not all policies have the same coverage. It is critical to read the fine print of any plan you are consider-ing before you buy. Most policies will not cover a cancellation simply because you are now afraid to go. Purchasing a policy that allows you to “cancel for any reason” is the best way to ensure coverage in this continuously evolving situation. •Sign up for updates for any changes in poli-

cies at the location where you intend to travel. Many countries are slowly re-opening but that may change between the time the trip is booked and the time of departure. •Think twice before buying a bargain ticket. As

many countries reopen their borders, flight and cruise deals are popping up everywhere. If you want to take advantage of these deals, keep in mind that, realistically, any destination could be-come compromised or closed again and you may need to cancel or reschedule your travel plans. This could result in additional fees and make the deal even less of a bargain.

If you have spotted a scam, even if you have not lost money, report it to BBB Scam Tracker. Your report can prevent others from being victimized.

Ask Charles

REAL ESTATE COUNCIL OF ALBERTA

I put an offer on a house that had competing offers. I later learned that one of the other buyers approached the seller directly instead of going through their real estate professional. Is this allowed?

Yes, this is technically allowed. The Real Estate Council of Alberta (RECA) does not regulate buyers or sellers them-selves. Consumers are free to make their own deals for their own property.

However, RECA recommends that consumers always use a licensed real estate professional when trading in real estate.

As a buyer, dealing directly with the seller may allow you to craft your offer to purchase in a way that guaran-tees the seller’s acceptance, but at what price?

Do you know the current value of the property and what you’re willing to pay? Are you aware of the impli-cations of removing certain conditions in an offer? How can you be sure whether the seller is withholding infor-mation that might affect your offer or your experience with the property?

The seller has extensive knowledge about the property. They also want to make the most money on the sale of the property. They are looking out for their own best interests.

The house might look like your dream home on the sur-face. It might be the ideal size and have the right num-ber of rooms, but what about the things you can’t see? Would it affect your decision to know if a death occurred on the property or if people believe it is haunted?

Do you know where to look for deeper information on the property? Do you know what and who to ask to en-sure that what you see is what you’d get? Do you feel confident that you have the knowledge necessary to look out for your best interests?

Real estate professionals are obligated to look out for their clients’ best interests. Working with a real estate professional to facilitate the deal can help you get the answers you need to make a fully informed decision.

Also, it is possible that if you had been working with a real estate agent when you viewed the property—even if the agent doesn’t facilitate the viewing of the house in question—the purchase may still trigger a fee pay-ment obligation if that clause was in your Buyer Rep-resentation Agreement. In this case, there may be no benefit to cutting your real estate professional out of the transaction.

Without a licensed real estate professional, you might have no one on your side but yourself. Dealing directly with the seller might get you a place you think you want. By working with a real estate professional, you have a better chance of getting a property you know you want.

You’ve got questions. He’s got answers.

Charles Stevenson is the Registrar at the Real Estate Council of Alberta. Charles knows that buying and selling a home can be confusing, but it doesn’t have to be. “Ask Charles” is a question and answer column for consumers about buying and selling property in Alberta. MLA Calgary-Edgemont Prasad Panda 222, 5149 Country Hills Blvd NW

403-288-4453 [email protected]

I want to thank everyone in our community for your re-silience over the past several months. Seeing how many people have come together to support each other in difficult times has made me even more proud to live in our community.

To get Alberta’s economy moving again, government has introduced a recovery plan that is focused on creat-ing jobs now, building up our province, and diversify-ing the economy for the future. To help jump-start the economy this year, our government will make the larg-est investment in infrastructure projects in Alberta’s his-tory, investing over $10-billion in projects and helping to create over 50,000 jobs.

Also, new measures and programs have been intro-duced to further stimulate our economy. Beginning July 1, Alberta’s corporate tax rate was reduced to 8 percent, making our province the most attractive place to do business in Canada by far. Other funding initiatives, like the Innovation Employment Grant and Cultural Event Relaunch Program, will help Albertan businesses and organizations launch and grow so that they can help get Albertans back to work in the long run.

I’d like to provide a short update on what my Ministry is working on. I was very pleased to hand over the keys to AHS for the newly completed Grand Prairie Regional Hospital. I am happy for the people of this region who have waited over 10 years for this challenging project to be completed.

We learned many lessons in dealing with delays on this project, which will be used to guide all future Alberta In-frastructure projects through the Alberta Infrastructure Act, a bill that I will be introducing in the Legislature this fall. Here at home, the Calgary Cancer Centre project is tracking very closely to our project plan, despite the ex-tra challenges presented by COVID-19.

As always, it is my honour to serve as your MLA.

Communication with constituents has been challen-ging during the pandemic. Normally I see and talk to residents at community events, during meetings in my office, when visiting schools, and by hosting events such as my annual open house. The Career Services event I planned to host in May was cancelled, but I hope to reschedule it later this year, as many constituents have requested assistance with preparing for their job search.

I now have an e-newsletter, which allows me to com-municate with you directly, in a timely manner, and to respond to your concerns quickly. There have been a handful of limited parliamentary sessions to deal with emergency legislation; otherwise Parliament has not met since March 13. The new Spe-cial Committee on COVID-19 began meeting virtually and in the House of Commons chamber, and eventually in a hybrid combination of the two, in April. While this committee does offer Parliamentarians the opportunity to question the government, this is only a committee of Parliament and does not allow for many of the tools that make Government accountable to Parliament, in-cluding the ability to introduce opposition motions that can be used to test Parliament’s confidence in the gov-ernment.

I have been able to question the government about problems with various support programs, the lack of resources for the auditor general, and Canada’s fiscal situation on several occasions and will also continue to do so during the summer with the limited parliament-ary tools available.

Enjoy the rest of the summer and, as always, reach out to my office if my staff and I can assist with federal con-cerns.

News from the Friends of Nose Hill

by Anne Burke

Nose Hill Park is one of the largest urban parks in North America and has its unique geological, ecologi-cal, and anthropological history. By 1879, the bison herds had vanished. An airport for the air force was on the top of the hill near the current 14th St. lookout point and airport relay tower. This WWI air base was used until the end of WWII. Prior to the 15th Annual Conference of the Blackfoot Confederacy (hosted by the Kainai in Tsuu T’ina), a stone marker was created near an older site of a stone cairn circle. This was a sa-

cred place for ceremonies and vision quests, as well as a lookout for “buffalo, the weather and danger.”

With an abundance of remarkable flora and fauna, there is a new project which aims to record observa-tions made by park users. The Nose Hill park bound-aries were entered into iNaturalist.ca from the Open Calgary Parks Data set for a project that automati-cally summarizes species, locations, and user con-tributions. If you are visiting the park and see some interesting flora and fauna, please take a photo and add it to iNaturalist.ca (but avoid people and pets). It will also help you with AI: Artificial Intelligence and a community vetting system. See the stats to learn more about what people are finding in the park! To date there have been 1395 observations, 328 species, 278 identifiers, and 166 observers. This is a great way to share valuable information and you will be able to view trends and hot spots of biodiversity in the park. To explore the current map and join the project to keep up with any posts, please visit the project page. https://inaturalist.ca/projects/nose-hill-park-bioin-ventory.
