to a head

The National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH)

The National Professional Qualification for Headship is the first choice qualification for anyone aspiring to be a headteacher or principal. Designed in collaboration with some of the country’s leading headteachers and academics, NPQH will develop talented leaders from all backgrounds who can deliver educational excellence in a self-improving system and high quality outcomes for pupils.

The NWLP

The Partnership helps young people achieve their potential and secure their stake in society by improving leadership and management in our schools. Because we understand that leadership quality will only be raised if the needs, ideas and aspirations of local school communities drive our work, we work in partnership with the very best schools and Headteacher Associations, as well as School Improvement Partners, TES Prime and key players from the private sector such as KPMG to make this happen.

Thinking about applying? Act quickly - the application round will open 10am 23 May until 1pm 9 July. To find out more join us at one of our application workshops across the North West.

Applied and deciding who to study with? Read about our enhanced offer including FREE coaching from a headteacher, a curriculum led entirely by headteachers, FREE headteacher application appraisals and much more. Don’t just take our word for it - read a selection of testimonials from our current NPQH cohort.

Our NPQH programmeLed by a team from over 500 primary, secondary and special schools, the NWLP is a leading provider for the NPQH. Our NPQH programme is an intensive and challenging experience based around excellence, critical reflection and quality school-based practice.

We will ensure you become a highly skilled, well-developed leader who is ready to make the transition to headship and hit the ground running. Our innovative curriculum and practical placements will equip you with the confidence, skills, professional knowledge and experience needed to stand out and make your mark.

Take a look at the 10 unique reasons to study with the North

West Leadership Partnership

An enhanced curriculum specifically tailored by local leaders from ‘Outstanding’ schools to meet the challenges facing schools and academies today

With a Partnership of ‘Outstanding’ Secondary, Primary and Special Schools that have, in their own right, earned a reputation for excellence and high standards, we have the skills, experience and knowledge to develop the National College’s Leadership Curriculum to suit the needs of the North West. We believe that there is no ‘one size fits all’ recipe for outstanding leadership. We understand the issues that face schools in our region and we recognise the need to tailor any leadership training to address such so that our candidates leave us with effective strategies to deal with these on-going challenges.

1

A partnership with KPMG

With financial management at the centre of the NPQH Final Assessment, our partnership with KPMG brings an important, global insight to the programme, with valuable lessons learnt from the business and commercial sector.

Headteacher delivery team

All NPQH modules are delivered by successful headteachers. Our team includes: National and Local Leaders of Education; headteachers of Secondary, Primary and Special Schools; leaders of academies; leaders of faith schools; Ofsted Inspectors; and School Improvement Officers.

2 3

FREE coaching from outstandingheadteachers with a proven track record

We will provide five FREE hours of coaching from a headteacher of a ‘Good’ or ‘Outstanding’ school. During this coaching, you will not only receive support and challenge from a credible leader, you will also learn vital coaching skills to utilise once you take up your first headship.

4

FREE headteacher application appraisal by one of our leadership delivery team

Discover the strengths and weaknesses of one of your headteacher application forms and obtain an objective critique of your supporting statement. The appraisal will involve a review of the content of your supporting statement and provide practical pointers on how you can improve to help you secure your first headship post.

Dedicated time to prepare for NPQH Final Assessment

The programme includes a dedicated workshop designed to support and challenge you in preparation for the Final Assessment tasks. The workshop will allow you time to share your written school improvement evidence with colleagues and practice your presentation for final interview.

6

Valuable school placements and optional mini placements in our exemplary Leadership Development Placement Schools throughout the region

At the NWLP, we want to enable you to experience excellence in a range of diverse contexts. We offer all our candidates the opportunity to undertake placements in the region’s top performing schools. Beyond the compulsory NPQH placement, our schools also offer you the opportunity to undertake mini placements (0.5-2 days) where you can meet and shadow successful senior leadership teams.

7

FREE access to TES Prime-led career guidance and support to help you secure your first headship post

With the leading schools’ recruitment service in the country as a partner, the NWLP is able to offer you continued career support throughout your study. TES Prime is committed to the recruitment and development of school leaders. As an NLWP NPQH candidate, you will have free access to an online resource centre dedicated to school leaders. Initially a nationwide group of above 400, the community will grow and will make use of the online networking tools, leadership resources and access to regional events for further learning.

8

An opportunity to accredit your NPQH at masters level with University of Manchester

Complete your NPQH with us and you will gain accreditation (60 CATS/APL) towards the internationally recognised Masters in Educational Leadership and Improvement at the University of Manchester.

9

Automatic membership of NWLP Alumni, which includes continued access to TES Prime career guidance and support

At the NWLP we don’t believe that your leadership development ends on completion of your NPQH. As a NWLP NPQH graduate, you will automatically join our alumni group. Membership benefits include continued access to the TES PRIME led career and resource service, headteacher vacancy alerts and networking opportunities.

NPQH - the essentials

When can I apply?

There two application rounds per year for the NPQH. The next application round will open 10am 23 May until 1pm 9 July 2013.

Who can apply?

You should be highly motivated to be a headteacher, no more than 12–18 months from applying for headship posts and ready to take up a headship as soon as you graduate. You do not need to be working within an educational establishment to apply, although this is likely to strengthen your application.

How do I apply?

Applications are made online via the National College for School Leadership. To apply for NPQH you will need to submit an application which includes a reference and statement of sponsorship by your NPQH sponsor, who will usually be your headteacher or line manager.

What’s involved?

Overview

To achieve the NPQH qualification you’ll need to successfully complete three essential and two elective modules involving extended case studies and related in-school assignments with a strong focus on leading teaching, behaviour and performance management. You will also complete a placement of a minimum of nine days at another school.

Final assessment

In order to gain the qualification, you must successfully complete the NPQH final assessment; a series of tasks designed to judge whether you are ready to take up your first headship.

These tasks include:

> leading and evidencing a school improvement priority in your own school> leading and evidencing a school improvement priority in a placement school> a case study assessment in a controlled setting that will cover: leading school financial management; and leading teacher appraisal> a presentation and panel interview.

How is the course structured?

The NPQH modules form an 11 month programme of study (9 months if you choose to study two electives at the same time or qualify for exemption from some of the elective modules).

We offer two, full day face-to-face workshops for each essential module and one full day session for each elective module.

ALL modules are led by experienced headteachers. The face-to-face events are supplemented by workplace learning, reading, reflections and online learning.
