From the desk of JOHN & MARY AQUINO, presidents NNJSDA

It's hard to believe that our year as Presidents of NNJSDA is coming to an end. Where did the time go? "Time sure does

fly when you're having fun" and boy did we have fun. We have truly enjoyed dancing and socializing with each and everyone

of you. The club dances, the NNJSDA specials, the participating of all of you in our "ONE SQUARE IS FAIR", the enthusiasm generated by all of you at all of our dances was just fantastic. We thank you all.

We want to thank our Executive Board for all of their time and cooper-ation, making our job that much easier. We are fortunate that all of our Board members will be returning again next year, with the exception of our Treasurers, Bob & Grace Bishe, who did a fantastic job for the past two years. We thank them and wish them well on Bob's retirement.

We are looking forward to dancing with all of you at our Summer Dances, especially our new graduates. If you are going to the National Convention this June in Indiana, have a great time. I know we will.

We would like at this time to recommend that all our interested dancers and especially our club officers and delegates join us at L.U.S.T. (Let Us Speak Together) in September. There are so many things we would like to share with you there. To top the day off, we will have a dance with John Kaltenthaler calling.

Years ago when HATTIE & LOU DeLEAU lived in Teaneck, NJ they were introduced to S/D...and their lives were never the same! Joining Circle Eights they carefully guided and nurtured it until when they retired to Stroudsburg,PA Circle Eights was well es-tablished - with a very popular weekend fall & spring. Since S/D was almost non-existant in their new

location, once again Hattie & Lou started back at square one to build. It took a number of years & much hard work, but finally their dreams were real-ized as Leisure Squares became a viable club and

recently joined the NNJSDA. Now Hattie & Lou have retired - AGAIN !! & will be moving. They take with them many memories and momentoes of their S/D years.

Fifteen years ago, when clubs used to circulate different items around the S/D circuit by letting the couple from the furthest distance take the item back to their club, Hattie & Lou decided to do some thing special for the bicentennial year. Lou de-signed and decoupaged a large wooden plaque with the usual dancing couple & Leisure Squares logo on the front. On the back was the message- please to circulate the plaque to other clubs and return to Leisure Squares. The 2 plaques that returned in time had been to NJ,NY, FL, TN & AL! #2 plaque travelled to FL,WA,C0 & NE! The third returned in 1983, having been to PA,NY,NJ & MD where it gathered dust until Alleghany Promenaders sent it back with a lovely note.

Many who dance now do not realize how much of today's fun they owe to this quiet, unassuming couple. We wish HATTIE & LOU much happiness in their new home...and only wish we could have said it in person when Leisure Squares honored them at a surprise party in May. God Bless You.

Dear Friends:

Well, I managed to do it again - put myself out of commission for several weeks - this time by falling down a flight of stairs and giving myself several concussions. However, the calls, flowers, cards, and prayers I received from so many of you really helped speed me on the way to recovery. Hopefully, I'll be back dancing with you in another onnple of weeks, Thanks; also; for the ',are von rave to Bill while I was in the hospital - the experience was rougher on him than on me, but with your care and attention, he managed to weather through it pretty well.

Thanks again for all your love - Square Dancers really are the smiles that brighten up a day.

Fondly, Donna Anderson

PREELOADE'RS .... 1986 This is the 19th year of the FREELOADER Program which

is open to ALL 1986 Graduates of ANY club. Simply attend 8 of the 10 NNJSDA summer dances (see covers) - have your FREELOADER card signed by the Treasurer. Dangles are awarded at the August 27th dance.

In the 18 years of this program to encourage the new graduates to use their newly acquired dancing skills during the summer, over 13000 have graduated, but only 685 have qualified for FREELOADERS. Last summer 32 new dancers qualified and are entitled to attend SIX Association Dances free over the next two years with certain exceptions such as LUST, MINI-Festival & any special dance as designated by the NNJSDA.

If you did not receive your FREELOADER card in your graduation packet, or have misplaced yours, more cards will be available at the first three NNJSDA summer dances. Please take careful note of the dates and locations. All summer dances are Mainstream Program.

Your NNJSDA, thru its 2nd VP, provides a special pack-et of information for each and every graduate. We sug-gest graduates carefully read thru all the contents and then save it for future reference. If you have questions ask your Class Chairman or NNJSDA officers. -

Summer may be an 11 & R time to some, but your Associ-ation will continue to work and plan for the benefit of its members. All summer long it sponsors Mainstream dances in air-conditioned halls so our graduates have a chance to use their newly acquired skills. By mid-July our 3rd VP will begin distributing copies of the winning S/D Month poster for clubs to use in advertising their fall classes. And in September, it will sponsor L U S T - to help all learn more about club leadership and what makes a club tick.

From the Club Rosters turned into the NNJSDA, the following inter-esting facts and figures have been found.

There are 42 member clubs: Total membership is three thousand two hundred and three (3,203). In the 42 clubs there are 557 singles and 1323 couples. However the actual number of individuals are less, since some people are members of more than one club.

This breaks down as follows: Couples - 891 belong to one club, 318 to two. 30 to three clubs amd 6 to four. As individuals then 82% of the couples belong to one club, 14.6% to two, 2.8% to three, and only 0.6% to four clubs. Singles: There are 190 men, 83.7% belong to one club, 15.8% to two, none to three, and 2 men (1%) to four clubs. There are 284 women singles, 85.2% belong to one club, 36 girls belong to two clubs (12.7%), 4 belong to three clubs (1.4%), and 2 women belong to four

clubs (0.7%). The actual number of individuals in our 42 clubs is 2,644 or 330 squares.

(ED: And then there are those dancers who never join a club, preferring to take and not give, to our activity.)

We would like to thank all of the dancers who have supported us this past season & invite all those who have not yet visited us, at our new location, (see heading), to do so on the 2nd & 4th Sunday of each month. To encourage those who have the burden of bridge/tunnel tolls, if two or more couples come in the same car to our regular dances, AL"e"MO will pay the tolls. During the summer, starting 2nd Monday in July, we will be sponsoring summer dances at the air-conditioned Phillips Dance Studio at West 7th St. at the corner of Bay Parkway, in Brooklyn on Monday nights. For more information, please telephone 718-934-2085 or 718-646-6308.

Our Plus level W/S completes in May with our class members ready to begin club level dancing. The class is encouraged to practice their skills at the first club dance in both April & May, with a formal graduation to Plus level planned at the June 21st dance. Our nominating committee (the Vierbuchens-chairpeople, Kramers & Germans) are hard at work preparing a slate of officers to continue the fun of club dancing. The slate was pre-sented in April & will be voted upon in May with the new officers invested at the June pot luck dinner dance. An enjoyable time was had by all, as we demonstrated S/D at the Eastern Star Nursing Home's Spring Party in May. A great way to brighten a Sunday as many residents got a chance to exper-ience S/Ding even if they were confined to a wheelchair. Many thanks to Valley Squares and Hill City Squares for raiding our St. Patty's Day Dance. We love being visited by others & try very hard to do the visiting-even if our small size prevents us from formally raiding others. Easy level dan-cing continues on 2nd & 4th Sundays until the end of June. Summer dancing is just around the corner, when we will once again be at Sacred Heart in Manville on the 3rd Saturdays in July & August. Hope to see you S/Ding.

Tickets are less if purchased before-so grab a member to get yours for "The Reel Thing". We celebrated St. Patrick's Day by raiding Spinning Wheels. The profusion of green out-fits added to the merriment. Our Mini-Spring Fling weekend, in April, was filled with much good dancing (Bill plus two guest callers) & many activi-ties. Our sincere thanks to Bill Heyman, who filled in, literally at the very last moment, for our April dance. We appreciated your coming, Bill... as did all who came. Eat your hearts out, those who missed it, for we had a delightful, fun filled PLUS evening of dancing. Congratulations to Milt/ Vickie Kinstle, who became grandparents during the month of March. We all hope that Betty Deneke is feeling better & back to dancing real soon. You are missed by everyone. We are proud of our VP's Mary/John Aquino, who have been selected to represent the State of New Jersey in the fashion show at the National Square Dance Convention in Indianapolis this June. Our thanks to Hannelore and Werner Baumann for serving as presidents this year. They will turn the "gavel" over to Anna Lou and Ray Kuenzler in June.

Remember, we're not dancing during the summer months. So after June, you will have the first Fridays free until October, when we again open our season with Red Bates calling.

During the past two years the presidents of 8 NNJSDA clubs in Central NJ have been meeting fairly regularly. By working together they have not only discussed problems that have con-fronted their clubs, but also organized four successful area class level dances, are sponsoring a Back to Fun at Basics with Squares, Rounds & Contras the first Sunday in June,

-4/4. prodded the SDCNJ to expand its calendar of events making it more accessible to all, prodded CCNJ into again distributing its Code of Ethics to all clubs and are working on some non S/D social functions for area clubs as well as a weekend. They also have arranged for cassettes & autobiographies of callers who want to be hired by some of the clubs. What of the future? Will the new presidents continue on with this

As the year winds to a close, we look back on another successful & enjoyable year. A thanks is in order for the splendid cooperation of all of the various committees...particularly decorating and refreshments, but mostly to all of our members for their support.

The Valentines Dance is worth noting because of the many beautiful theme dresses worn by the ladies and each lady being presented with a long stemmed rose as they were leaving, by our president Jim and Bea Jones.

The Presidents Dance was noteworthy because of the research done by the committee in compiling a brief history of the past presidents, which was displayed both graphically and pictorially from the founders in 1952 ---to the present. Everyone is looking forward to graduation of an ex- tremely good class & thanks to the cooperation of all the angels. A re-minder of the club's picnic in mid June. Our Spring Fling for the students in April was through the cooperation of the presidents and callers council at the Stelton Recreation. We urge everyone, members and students alike, to support the summer dances at the N.N.J.S.D.A. Looking forward to wel-coming you all back in the fall and wishing everyone a great summer.

Our Presidents Ball this year, took place in Feb. The 15 squares of dancers enjoyed the calling of Wayne Applegate C the cueing of Jack McLau ghlin. A highlite of that nite, was the raid by the Pelham Promenaders. (All the way from N.Y.) We had raided them last year. At our March dance, we were raided by HIX & CHIX. The caller that night, Joe Fioretti, regret-fully announced that he can no longer accept future dates. He will be so missed by us all, especially after the great Plus workshop & dance which he treated us all to that night. Later in March, we were given a big -and friendly hand by Country Promenaders, as we raided them that night. The Aquinos, Bolins & Tirrells are to be congratulated for the effort they expended to have the Red Boot Boys come to the Rutgers gym in March, to call & entertain us all. If you were not there, you missed a fun nite.

Our Dinner Dance in April, was held at the Brownstone House in West Paterson. Over 60 people enjoyed the food, fun & dancing. We thank Dick/ Shirley White for their efforts to make it successful. We will be having six outdoor summer dances starting the end of June, in Nutley. Look for our flyer for the dates, time & place. We always advise New Grads to at-tend the 10 Wed. nite Association dances & to dance wherever they can dur-ing the summer. The more they dance, the more their confidence & enjoy-ment and with that...more friends.

The crocus' are blooming and another Winter is over. It is always sad to see another season end, but the beauty of Spring is always so breath-taking, that the sorrow you feel is short lived. With Spring, comes the plans for Graduation. The committee is busy making all of the necessary arrangements for the Graduation Dance. We know that all will have a won-derful time. It is always a pleasure to welcome the new dancers into our Club. We had our Annual Meeting in March & the following officers were elected: President; Alice/Marvin Meyer; 1st VP, Marion/Henry Egen; 2nd VP, Wanda/Stan Blanchard; Secretary, Betty/Marty Jobrack and Treasurers, Adele/Nat Sunshine. Best wishes to the new Executive Board.

New Graduates Especially Welcome

BAKING SQUARES -- UnLon, N1 (AD / c 3 SatundayA LonnectLcut fraRMA School, RumveAant Ave.

We have had about nine squares per dance at our Union Recreation Dept. sponsored dances. In March, we raided Somerset Hills & in April, Valley Squares. In return, we were raided by Merri-Eights in March & Richmond Dancers in April. NNJSDA's Red Boot Boys Concert & Dance attracted our usual good turn-out of 9+ couples. It was great to see Jean Kellogg back to visit & applaud after her accident & resultant surgery...she even made the stairs at our dances & at Rutgers" even greater to have Jean able to fulfill her calling dates for Dancing Squares again. That was a close call, Jean, welcome back! A great Graduation Dance is planned free to all new graduates (see ad) & we look forward to welcoming everyone on our floor. (The wooden floor is so nice to dance on). Our refreshments have been out-standing examples of everyone's good cooking & continued so-to the last dance. We will parade & dance in Scotch Plains on Memorial Day. June 1st, is Heritage Day in Union and we plan to repay our sponsors by putting on the best dancing demonstration we have ever done. We hope they give us some time to include some audience participation as well. Come to Union & join us, if you wish! Our Club Picnic/Annual Meeting will be at Trainors' in July. Last year, the rains fell just as we finished the business of eat-ing, so we hope for better this summer!! With Brian Fugere calling & the Rumbles alternating Cueing with Jean Kellogg, we have really had some nice dancing this season. Ron & Ree taught.the Charleston during the March... "before the hour" times & now we are all doing the Charleston Points. Come dance with us, experience our brand of hospitality, OUR LATCH STRING IS ALWAYS OUT!!

NIL CITY JOVE Summa, 1/3/5 TueAdup Ye(/eILion 3c/too!, &I-wood dve.nue

It is with mixed feelings that we approach the end of another Square Dance season. Hill City hangs up it's "Gone Fishin' " sign after our 1st June dance and we will miss our usual Tuesday night dances. But, we do love the warm weather months and plan to do some fishin' ourselves - and dancin' too (especially square & round dancing) - and we hope to see all of you somewhere during the course of the summer, perhaps at one of the S/D weekends or at the NNJSDA Wednesday Night Dances.

We'd like to extend a great big "thank you" to Jean/George Hagmann for the Super Job they have done as presidents this year. They, together with the other officers and executive board members, have made possible the many good times we've shared all season. We'd also like to offer our congratulations and our support to our new presidents Chris and Tony Quat- rone and the newly elected incoming officers as they begin to plan & imple-ment the activities for Hill City's 36th year of Square Dancing. See you at our 1st dance in September.

Since we've talked to you last, our Club has been raided by Lakeland Squares & we raided Covered Bridge. Mike Foley called when we had Lakeland Squares and he was in his usual excellent & challenging form...everyone had a great time. At Covered Bridge, Joe Fioretti called-he also announced his retirement from calling. Our club was fortunate to have him one more time at our Annual Dinner Dance & everyone enjoyed themselves. We will miss Joe's competent & pleasant calling. We congratulate all recent graduates and wel-come you to the wonderful world of S/Ding. We invite all new graduates to our Graduates Dance in mid May, as our guests! Yes, that's right, you just bring your body and your happy feet - we'll take care of all of the rest. Dance to the Smooth Dulcet tones of one of the great callers, Dick Pasvol-sky and partake of our great refreshments--all for FREE. This is truly an offer you can not refuse. Our class is doing well. They went on a raid last month and are looking forward to taking Plus classes in the Fall. When the hot weather comes this summer-don't give up dancing. Come join us in our Air Conditioned Hall-we dance every Thursday night. Let us show you that S/D & R/D can be fun. Join us & see. Colorful Spring is here but Summer is making it's way around the cor-ner. Isle's successful & enjoyable season is winding down. Our St. Pat-rick's dance with Ray Lehbergher calling was a splashing sea of green suc-cess. We look forward to five more additional evenings of fun & dancing back at our Cleveland Ave., home ground, with such'renown callers as Wes Morris, John Kephart, Wayne Applegate & Frank Riviccio plus Shirley & Frank Bellotti on rounds. Congratulations are in order to each and every RIOS graduate and graduates everywhere. We look forward with eager anticipation to their joining us for many hours of pleasurable dancing. Our today new S/Ders are the great dancers of the years to come! Keep them dancing by offering to dance with them, showing them courtesy-friendliness, cooperation, pleasure, consideration & encouragement. Above all-encourage them to at-tend as many dances as possible throughout the year, including summer dances. Practice STILL makes perfect. Thanks to all those who worked & helped to make each dance a profitable & joyful. event. A special big THANK YOU to visiting club dancers and raiding clubs. We could not have succeeded with-out you. On a sad note, we mourn the sudden death of a beloved member----Robert Daniels. We will all miss the exuberant, friendly smile and happy spirit of dear Bob. Our deepest condolence is extended to his lovely wife Joan and their two daughters. Have a "squaring", healthy, happy summer & be sure to join us in the fall.

Spring is in the air & our dances have a certain spring to them - as well. Our March dance was raided by Richmond Dancers & our graduation in April was a gala affair-in which 28 enthusiastic students were graduated. The balance of the season will feature our annual pot luck dinner with our usual camaraderie and delectable dishes prepared by our members. In July, we will sponsor our first summer dance in Brooklyn with Joe Fioretti calling. We wish a speedy recovery to the mother of Jean Riviccio.

We had a very successful year. Our club is very appreciative to all of you who made it so. We could not do it without you! Did you hear about our March dance of 15 squares when we honored Ted? Our door prizes were the most, Rhonda had a few long nites making them. We will be raiding D & H and Pocono Squares. WE hope to see you there. Our raids have been well attended. Have a great summer and come see us in September.

Our season will resume 2nd Tuesday in September with Open House - & the 3rd Tues., will be our first Club dance. Until then, we dance MS every Tuesday until the end of July in the air-conditioned gym at Wilson School. Our final summer dance in July will feature Carl Hanks. Thanks to all who contributed to the success of our Dinner Dance, mainly chairman Mary Tragis, Marge Barton & Carolyn Juntzinger. Welcome to the newly-elected officers who were installed at that dance & Good Luck. Many thanks to the retiring members of the Executive Board for their year of diligence. Thanks to John and Mary Aquino for representing the Association at our Graduation in April. We welcome our new graduates as club members & look forward to dancing with them every week-not just at student level dances. We enjoyed raiding Flut-terwheels, Ironia Reelers & Somerset Hills during the past several months. It's always fun to dance with friends at other clubs & therefore make new friends. Les/Lola Patterson have arranged a Mystery Bus Ride the last Sat. in May. It will be an all-day affair & everyone is welcome. The 2nd Sun. in July is our annual picnic at Leni Lenape area of the Knoll Country Club. Herb Conklin will be calling between courses. See you in September

We had a great time and a lot of fun at our past dances. Besides a great turn-out of our own club, we had several other clubs visiting us -which made our time more pleasant and more fun. Soon our season of danc-ing will be over for the summer months but we will be back dancing again in the Fall. So come back and dance with us again. Happy Dancing.

This G/S issue is our final chance to greet you for the current dance season. We hope all clubs can look back on as good a year as can the M T family. We had many great evenings of dance and the lion's share of credit must go to our guests and our fine callers & cuers. We did leave some tiny things undone but they will be seed for next year. Our outgoing executive board, headed by Coretta/Bob Redding, deserve a solid round of applause for the excellent job of leading our club this year. By the time this is being read, our new board with Harriette/Sol Koved at the helm for the third time, will have been installed. Now, be it known by all who would round dance... that Peg/Joe Dockry will continue the M T round dance lessons thru the sum-mer months. You may contact this reporter for more info. Also, by the time this is read, we will have enjoyed our annual dinner dance for which we have Bev/Gene Sensback to thank. Our S/D class will graduate and be welcomed in-to our club at our covered dish dinner in May. One last note: our 1st June dance will be called by Manny Amor in place of Ray Lehberger. Have a good dancing summer.

We are winding down the regular dance year, trying to keep our "Com-mitment to Excellence". In March, three sets raided Dancing Squares. Then, we put on a demo at the E. Brunswick Senior Citizens Center. Our annual Barn Dance, in March, drew 32 squares. Staten Square Sets raided us in April & we raided Somerset Hills. We are graduating 26 students in May & hope to run Summer Plus workshops. We were invited to dance at the Old Bridge Fair in May. Our annual Dinner Dance will be held in June & is open to non-members. (see ad for ticket info). We have chartered two buses for our 2nd Mystery Bus Ride this year. In August, we'll have our annual picnic, which will be open to non-members.

Please note that John Kephart will be calling our first August dance. We had inadvertently listed John Kaltenthaler, who will be calling for us later in the year. We shall miss Nancy/Max Nosher, who will retire from cueing this June & we once more welcome Ron/Ree Rumble as our club cuers.

On a personal note, as we wind down our 2nd year as club presidents, we thank all of you who helped make this a good year for the Merri-8's. We were able to attend many dances this year & are more firmly convinced that Square Dancers (especially in NNJSDA) really are the nicest people in the world!! Have a happy summer.

Our second dance in March was well attended and it was a most friendly & enjoyable evening. We were pleased to have Romaine/Lucille Bensley back with us after a couple of months absence due to illness. We also welcomed back several couples who spent the wintry months in Florida, thus making us all feel a bit on the pale side. Isn't it good to feel that Winter is behind us? Just seems like the dance season is in full swing when sudden-ly, we realize that there is not too much time left before the summer break. However, you do have a chance to join us for our superlative pot-luck sup-per the 1st Wed. in June and we are sure that Al/Joan Lawrence will have it beautifully organized as always. We hope everyone has a safe and sunny summer & we look forward to meeting you in a Mountain Square on the third Wednesday in September when Joe (Landi) will be back calling for another year of first-class dancing.

Princeton Squares are still danring at Plus level at Princeton's Community Park School and mainstream level on every Thursday at the Not-tingham Ballroom in Hamilton Square. Everyone enjoys dancing with John Kephart at any level. Our new class is doing exceedingly well & there is also a beginners round dance class, with John Toll of South Jersey, which meets at 7:15 each Thursday before the squaring up begins. Princeton Sq., along with two neighboring clubs, co-sponsored three Sunday afternoon class level dances - giving new dancers an opportunity to dance with several call-ers besides their own teacher. Our club was also responsible for sponsor-ing three Sunday afternoon Plus dances for the Penn-Jersey District of the Federation of Delaware Valley Square DAncers. We're looking forward to our class graduation in May, which will be observed with a pot-luck supper and appropriate ceremonies.

This is the summer issue of Grand Square. There are many opportuni-ties for your dancing pleasure to be found within. Our club does not dance during the summer. Bruce Busch will kick-off the fall season the 4th Sat. in September. Our level of dancing is not easy to find in the summer Seek and yee shall find it in the Grand Square. We have had many good times so far in our '85-'86 season, especially in March when Ed Foote was a guest caller and nearly filled the house. Enjoy the summer. Keep well and safe. We will welcome you all in the Fall...back to Ramapo.

Graduation finally came in March for 6 couples and 2 singles. Fred/ Kathryn Hill, past presidents of NNJSDA, came to offer their congratula-tions and encouragement. 31 members of The Reelers, also came out to launch the class into their S/Ding future. Karen Wolf received her 100% attendance badge. Congratulations, Karen! Al Kojak was recognized as SUPER ANGEL.... Al has been an angel for the classes for more than 15 years. Even he has lost count. THANKS, Al ! ! ! It's great to see Jim Drake dancing again..he is recovering from open heart surgery. The dinner part of our annual dinner dance was cancelled; however, we all had a terrific time dancing to Dick Pasvolsky's commands. We just have a few more dances before this season becomes history. As we approach the conclusion of our 34th dance season, we have every reason to reflect on a very successful year & we salute all members who con-tributed so greatly and so generously to all of our achievements.

May will feature our festive & high-spirited Potluck Dinner chaired by the Falentinos and our R.I.O.S. graduation. Marty Clifford has assured us that not only are our new graduates doing well with M/S and a few Plus calls but they do know "boy" from "girl" and "left" from their "right". We wel-come the opportunity in extending a warm welcome to our new members. Our club raiders don't adhere to the 2 square minimum. We produced 5 squares at a recent raid of Staten Square Set. Richmond continues to be very sup-portive of NNJSDA as demonstrated by their attendance at every association special with at least one square of dancers. Cheers to Jean Georges, Sam/ Grace Ippolito and Lucille/Al Ricca, who received our club's diamond stud-ded travel wheel in recognition of their participation in 10 raids.

Our FLAG DAY SPECIAL in June with John Kaltenthaler calling should be one of the more exciting dances of the season. We can think of no better event to end a successful year. We eagerly look forward to our 35th year and with your strong support, the club will continue to flourish.

It's Summertime! And the end of another wonderful dancing season. Our Live Music Special with St. Elmo's Fire was a great success. In April, we danced in the New Jersey Folk Festival at the Cook/Douglass Campus. It's a great way to attract a big crowd. Our spring semester class grad-uated May 8th, which was our last dance for this season. We hope to see all of you new graduates at our dances. Don't forget - practice makes a better dancer, so come on out and DANCE! Well, so long for now. We'll see all of you next September. (ED: The following tidbits were sent by a former Rutgers reporter

It rained hearts at our St. Valentine's Dance and all who attended had their pictures taken in the "shower". The pictures of our members & guests decked out in their Square Dance finery were welcome additions to our scrap-books. Our Valentine's Day Dance was just one of a number of theme dances that we put on this year. Others were the Knockwurst Fest, Pie Night, Ice Cream Social, Cake Walk, Cream Puff Extravaganza and the upcoming Straw-berry Festival. Our class members have now graduated as MS Club level dan-cers and many are taking advantage of our Plus level lessons. The class & club members were well aquainted by graduation. We brought almost seven squares of club and class members to our raid of Lakeland Squares' class level dance. The club and class also got together for a Covered Dish Sup-per prior to a recent class lesson. Somerset Hills doesn't hold dances over the summer, but think that you won't see us dancing? We will be out there. "See you in September".

When we read GUY NEARING, 96, author, editor, horticulturist, painter, naturalist, chess master, and dancer died in March it brought back a flood of memories. When Guy was 83, GRAND SQUARE, did a feature article on this most interesting gentleman who, after learning to S/D at 57, danced 6 nites a week, lived on a diet of natural food and had multi interests. His Nearing Circle Waltz, his Nearing frame (for growing rhododendrons from cuttings), his Lichen Book with his own paintings, his knowledge of mush-rooms Guy had an insatiable curiosity and energy. He was a prime ex- ample of how when adversity closes one door, God opens another. Guy lived his life to its fullest - we're only sorry our newer dancers never had the privilege of his friendship.

Spinning Wheels bout with old man winter can be declared a draw. He didn't manage to knock out any of our dances but he threatened to do so many times-that our attendance was low. We survived to fight another season Things are looking hopeful on other fronts. Wayne Applegate is turning out some class members that make us old timers look like new graduates. We have seen some beautiful dancers coming to our class level dances & they are go-ing to be a mighty welcome addition to the club. We did run into one pro-blem, when the school was to be closed and we had announced that our dance would be held at the Civic Center...only to find that it was being closed for much needed renovations. Our apologies to any guests left standing at "the alter" at our March 21st dance. We are sorry the groom wasn't there.

At this writing, the white knight, Bob Johnstone is readying his char-ger to come call for us & Mickey McFarland is trying to find some sensible way to get from Middletown, N.Y. to Wayne. We hope she finds one. By the time this reaches you, they will have arrived---our class will have grad-uated & we will have a new wide-eyed & bushy-tailed set of officers ready to greet you after our summer haitus. Come & join us in September.

Congratulations to our latest Blue Jay Award winners. Fran/Sal Incon-tro walked off with the coveted award for their untiring work on behalf of our club and the world of S/D. In their 10 years of S/D, they angeled 8 yrs chaired many dances and were active in Big Top Skits. It's good to see our former president Frank Birmingham up and around after his recent hospital stay. It's hard to keep a good man down. Chris & Tom Piciocco have been doing a bang-up job as our new raid chairpersons. Added to the list of our raided clubs, since the last edition of G/S are the Richmond Dancers and the Isle Squares. Kudos to chairpersons Ken/Eileen Merring and Jim/Pat Ray for our very successful Valentine's Day and St. Patrick's Day dances. We're glad to report that Staten Square Set continued its' support of NNJSDA dan-ces. Those of us who attended the March dance, were treated to an after-the-dance concert by the Red Boot Boys, who really do wear red boots. They put on quite a show...the evening's festivities were completed by the cue-ing of rounds by your editors, the Tirrells.

Now's the time to start talking to fripnric, neighbors and (-0-workers about next years class. We would like to hear from all of you, who have any ideas as to how we may increase the size of our classes. Finally, a personal note...Thanks to two of our youngest elders Kay/Ed Brown, for their kind words of praise for your reporters efforts. We really appreciated them Remember, we dance for fun and friendship...why not join us?

Our President's Ball was held at our favorite special spot. Condit Motors. We honored many presidents and past presidents that evening. Then, Spring arrived and we danced at our Alpine School and it was a great feel-ing to know that warmer weather had arrived and we danced to celebrate.

4 -1_Ca. the warmer weather came April Showers and it didn't dampen our spirits. We held a raid with our new graduates-to-be at the Lakeland Squares in Feb. Clubs also on our raiding schedule were Spinning Wheels of Wayne in March & the;Pocono Squares in April. Our annual meeting was held in March & the following slate of officers were elected for 1986-87. President: Jo/Max 1>17tman; 1st VP, Suzanne/Bill Woodbury; Treasurer, Ann/Al Johnson and Sec-retary, Alice/Bob Vealey. A special thanks to Jo/Max Hartman for taking on the responsibility of getting together the slate of officers. Spring has arrived and the end of another square-dance season will soon be here. Before the current season ends, we're going to be enjoying another (our third annual) "Moonlight on the Hudson" dance, in June, with John Kaltenthaler. At that time all of the students will be graduates & are most welcome to attend. We'd like to extend a very BIG Thank You to Dot/Dick Meyers, who will be retiring as T/S officers and welcome Noemi/ Dave Sandt as our new Treasurers. Hope you made our Pot-luck in May.

Everyone goes on raids! But did you ever do it in the DARK? T/S has given raids a new dimension as....using glow lights, we marched & arched and ended up making a "T" & an "S" with our lights. Who knows, you may be next for our "glowworm raiders" !! (this is, if you are a real M/S club).

Thanks to all of our members who contributed their special talents during this last year....retreshments, decorations or just by coming out.

Our annual covered dish supper, held this year in April, proved once again that we have superb cooks & all that luscious fresh fruit on each table disappeared rapidly. It was great to have so many Tenderfeet join us for supper and good dancing. We would like to congratulate all grad-uates and remind them to attend the summer dances sponsored by the NNJSDA. Also, a reminder that Tenakill's graduate dance will be held in May and we are looking forward to having you dance with us. Welcome home to our snow-birds, the Enos' and Baumuller's.

Happy Squares have been active this winter and if we appear a bit hea-vier it is due to the fantastic lunches various organizations have been supplying us - as we entertained them. Sometimes it has been a bit diffi-cult to dance after enjoying these meals. We wish everyone a healthy & happy summer and look forward to dancing with you at T.T. in September.... plus throughout the season.

This has been a year of firsts for Valley Squares. In January, we became members of the Association and Bob Allen had our first class of stu-dents all ready for graduation in April. Also, It is the first winter, we have not had to cancel a dance because of the weather! The Club is very pleased to have Carl Hanks returning as our Club Caller and Roy Gotta for our increasing number of round dancers. We hope to end the Spring dances and start the new Fall schedule with the continued support and enthusiasm our members & guests have given us throughout the year. Happy Summer !

I was hoping to be able to tell you that we have a new slate of offi-cers but at this time of writing, our nominating committee is having a very difficult time. Our club members are very busy people and much in demand in other areas...or they have already served as club officers and/or are planning to move shortly. We trust that, as always, someone will step for-ward and fill the shoes of the present officers. Sincere thanks from all club members to the Raimondos who served us so well during the past two years despite serious personal problems. Their dedication to square danc-ing is an inspiration to us all. We have a great line-up of callers for the remainder of the season and as always the Novaks guide our steps thru the rounds. Come and square up with us. Please see our ad.

Our club has certainly had a full season. The turnouts at all of our dances are telling us that somebody likes what we are doing. Is it the variety of callers or the specials, that everyone seems to like? OR is it the style of our club announcements by our celebrated club president, Leo Rogers, that is drawing the big crowds to our dances? If you would let us know, we could provide more of what you like.... Our Pie Nite was a great success. Members brought so many of their favorite pies that we had trouble trying to taste them all. Our president claims to have eaten six pieces!!! Our early March dance turned out to be a birthday party. Nancy Sly made a cake with candles & all the trimmings, for Tom Neville & Lee Gardner. We also learned of the engagement of our Cathy Suessmann to Ed Barrett. Cathy angeled while Ed was taking beginner S/D lessons & became his "special angel". Our covered dish dinner turned out to be a gourmet's delight. Too bad if you missed that one. To wrap up the regular season, we have two more scheduled dances. Then, we jump into our special summer program -- our Plus woLkshop aL PeLrubka Park. Remember the fun & excitement we had last year? There was the fresh air, dancing under the stars, mosquitos, thunderstorms and hot sweaty evenings. Check our ad and come to help feed the mosquitos again this summer.

We'd like to thank the executive board of the past season for all of their endeavors and good luck to the incoming team. We wish the best of luck to Jean/Lou Coles, who are retiring to North Carolina. We'll be look-ing forward to meeting you on the dance floor this summer.

PRU GRAY'S HCUSE.

TIPS FOR THE IRADUATE

AN EDGE STITCHED HEM.

Quick and easy and neat. This technique is done by a

straight stitch on the machine. wake a line of stitching

on the marked hemline. Trim away excess fabric 1/4 inch,

outside stitching. Turn edge to wrong side, folding on

stitching line, (no pinning or basting needed). Now, top-

stitch on the right side, 1/8 inch from fold. if you wish

two lines of stitching, make first line closer to edge of

fabric. This will not work on fabrics that fray.

Several unique ideas have crossed my desk, I'd like to share

them with you.

Dot Hess of Kuntry Kuz'ns Franklin, keeps her shoes

shiny and new by using Jubilee Kitchen 4ax. It removes all

marks, scuffs and dirt, keeping them shiny and new. The

best part--no white mess from shoe polish all over your

panty hose or his dark slacks.

Helen Hendrix of West Milford Flutter Wheels, decorates

square dance shirts with colorful embroidered decorations.

Her work is beautiful and many square dance men wear her

designed shirts. Too late--she has retired from this ex-

cept for her husband Don's shirts.

Margaret Mundorf, also of the same club, has a badge

trick. So many times dresses or blouses are snagged by the

pin point. Margaret wears her badge attached to a macrame

necklace or for dressy occasion, a gold chain.

Here is one of my ideas, a hint on crinoline storage.

I put each crinoline into a cardboard box, 15"long X 15"wide

X 17" high. Roll the crinoline as you would for a carrying

bag. Place it in box elastic side down, close lid. Store

one box on top of another. Result--no stretching or sagging

or limp crinolines.

Ideas are always welcome.

CONGRATULATIONS GRADUATES! Trudy K. Austin RD 2, Box 110 Newton, NJ 07860

The International Association

of Square Dance Callers

CALLERLAB - 1986

PROGRAMMING FOR PLEASURE was the theme of the recent CALLERLAB Convention in Balti-more. This annual gathering of professional

callers attracted almost.400 callers from the US and 5 foreign countries and consisted of many workshops and committee meetings to improve individ-ual calling skills and to address issues of importance to our square dance activity. The focus was on putting FUN back into square dancing by the inclusion of contras and other traditional dances, careful music program-ming, selection of choreography as well as making sure that the dancers are able to dance comfortably.

At the final business meeting, as a result of study by the Ad Hoc and other committees, many issues were discussed and voted on including ques-tions pertaining to dancer recruitment and retention. There was virtual unanimity on the establishment of a COMMUNITY SQUARE DANCE PROGRAM, which could be taught in about 10 lessons and would attract many new participants to our wonderful activity. While not wanting to change the structure of the existing Mainstream and Plus lists and the related club structure, it was also decided to establish a new annotated Mainstream teaching list, which would enable the students to graduate more comfortably into their sponsor clubs. Certain moves on the existing list would be noted for later workshop teaching during the regular club year. This new annotated list would be available on an EXPERIMENTAL BASIS for 1 year without any obli-gation that it be used. This revision would enable the dancers to be more thoroughly taught during the 25-30 lessons, making them more comfortable dancers. Both of the above mentioned lists will be published in mid-Aug. for consideration by callers and clubs, working together, to improve and achieve even greater success in the coming September teaching season.

Leaders will gather to share their knowledge and ex- pertise for the enjoyment and betterment of the RID

activity. Much of this year's meeting will be devoted to reviewing and refining the various Phases of Round Dancing, the ROUNDALAB Phase Rating System, and the suggested cueing rules - reflecting a year of "Field Testing". Eagerly awaited are the tapes of the Phase figures prepared by the Video Tape Committee as well as other reports including Accreditation and Teaching Progression.

"Swap & Exchange" sessions will feature the use of TV taping in teach-ing, phasing a R/D, and cue sheet reading and writing. Evenings will be devoted to educational sessions - "Techniques for the R/D Teacher" with Don/Pete Hickman of TX is scheduled for Sunday. On Monday evening, after the Awards Banquet, Wade Driver will discuss "Understanding our Music and How to Use It", including microphone techniques.

It will be a busy overflowing two plus days. Although there will be no programmed round dancing at its meeting, the Indiana R/D Council is in-viting all ROUNDALAB attendees to relax at a special dance in their honor Tuesday evening. Many leaders are planning to remain all week to attend ROUNDALAB's first annual teacher seminar/clinic on Wednesday and then assist at the 35th NSDC.

Spring usually heralds the graduation of thousands of new square dancers around the country. We rejoice with them in their ac-complishment and tip our sombrero to the cal-lers & angels who worked diligently to train

these welcome newcomers to the square dance world. Unfortunately, our rejoicing may be short-lived if we do not continue

to work to serve the needs of these new dancers and make them feel welcome. The question we need to ask ourselves is, "After graduation, what's next?" Do the new dancers have a place to practice and enjoy their newly acquired skills, or are they faced with a summer hiatus and a wide gap between what they have been taught and what their club actually is doing?

The problem of the summer hiatus can be solved in many ways with special dances & social outings during the summer to help assimilate the newcomers into club activities. Solving the problem of the gap between class & club is not so easy, & failure to solve that very problem accounts for a large number of dropouts - dancers who become discouraged and frus-trated because there is no place for them to dance and have fun with what they already know.

All too often an attempt is made to solve the problem by rushing the new dancers into another program during the Summer so that (supposedly) they can begin to dance with the club in the Fall. Thus we see a plethora of Plus workshops during the summer that are filled with new dancers who have not even had the opportunity to practice their Mainstream skills. Not only are the dancers being rushed into a new program much too quickly, but many of the workshops are too short for what they pretend to do. CALLER-LAB recommends that a new dancer dance the Mainstream program regularly for at least one year berfore attempting Plus. This summer rush often only compounds the problem and produces dancers who are proficient at neither Mainstream nor Plus and who are, therefore, doubly frustrated.

CALLER SCHOOL Scholarships

The American Square Dance Society announces that several full and partial cash scholarships will be granted to individuals who have a desire to learn the skills of calling & teaching or wish to improve those skills by attending one of the many fine callers' institutes but who need some financial assistance. There is no formal application form. Just send a letter stating the individual's desires & need of financial assistance to the American Square Dance Society, 462 North Robertson Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90048-1799. shuuld Yeauh the Society by JUNE 15, 1986.

This on-going scholarship program, now in its 12th year, has made it possible for more than 32 individuals to attend a caller school of their choice. The Society's funds this year have been augmented by grants from the Overseas Dancers' Association and the Penn-York Callers' & Teachers' Association.

Locally, the NNJRound Dance Leaders Council also has available some scholarship monies for anyone showing a sincere desire to become a R/D teacher. Contact any of our local R/D leaders for more information.

Just as there are schools for becoming S/D callers, or improving yourself in this field, there are schools for beginning R/D leaders, etc. T791919171T7W1 NTIT917T9(9191 ITT9191

(LEGACY - continued from page 48 ) As graduation time is a time of rejoicing, the tran2,ition time also

should be a time of rejoicing. Let's all work to make it so. Let's make

it a time during which new dancers find the fun and enjoyment they have been working for, a time during which they find the acceptance and friend-liness they have a right to expect. We have told them that square dancing is fun. Now let's prove it.

SQUARE DANCE COUNCIL of NEW JERSEY

Something new has been added to the NNJSDA, NNJRDLC, CCNJ, CNJSDA & Penn-Del banners. Thanks to Helen Cavan-augh, a miniature of the SDCNJ banner, to denote these organizations belonging to the SDCNJ is now available. In fact, all representatives are also now wearing little dangles (miniatures of the SDCNJ symbol) on their organi-zation's badge. How many have you noticed?

To help clubs & organizations better plan future activ-ities, the SDCNJ will be maintaining & underwriting a statewide calendar of NJ S/D dates. John Acquino has computerized this project which will list events up to 3 years in advance. While John will maintain it, it is up to the various clubs/organizations/ etc. to inform John of their special dances, events, weekends, etc. This calendar will only be as good as ALL of us make it. A Self addressed stamped #10 envelope will get you a copy. SDCNJ - 496 Kendrick Street, Paramus, NJ 07652.

Future SDCNJ plans include a state festival. Next meeting- Sunday, Oct. 26, 1986. The Council is also sponsoring its annual dance on Sunday afternoon, August 24 at the lovely Nottingham Ballroom in Hamilton Square, NJ. Randy Dougherty will be calling with Roy Gotta & Doc Tirrell on the rounds. This is the Council's only fund raiser.

ROUND DANCE HIGHLIGHTS - Anne Gallo, NNJSDA/NNJRDLC Liaison

CALLERLAB Beware! First we had Jack McLaughlin, then Jeanne Brody (at the GRAND SQUARE Booster Ball), and now Ed Shearwood doing what??? CALLING Squares! Unbelievable! (ED: Not to "Old Timers" who will remember that Ed started out to be a caller, but decided to become a R/D cuer in-stead.) They do a super job, though - have to give them credit.

The Council had its Spring Festival of Rounds at Montville in April. Hall A was Easy Level and Hall B was intermediate rounds. Co-Chairpersons were Ed/Les Shearwood and Marie/Stan Shipman. Jack/Carol McLaughlin were the refreshment committee assisted by the rest of the cuers: Roy, Dick, Peg, Dave, Doc, Jeanne, Pat, Jean, Grace & spouses. How nice to have Pat O'Donnell, our new Associate Member, cueing at the festival. It may have been raining outside, but the sun shone on the inside on all those smiling faces. Welcome aboard to new Corresponding Members: Joan/Bill Wagner and Peg/Joe Dockry. The Noskers are retiring this summer; the Pennies are moving to Blairstown; Jean Kellogg broke her hip & Grace Pennie & Marie Shipman had surgery. All are back on the job cueing at their clubs. Con-grats to Peg Tristram on release of her "It's Christmas" Round Dance.

The Council is now using the ROUNDALAB terminology to identify dances. Phase I-Beginners; Phase II-Easy; Phase II-Easy Intermediate; Phase IV-Intermediate; Phase V-High Intermediate; & Phase VI-Advanced/Challenge.

Remember to welcome the new Round Dancer into the circle and see you (in) around. CLOUD 9 Round Dance Club - Spinks - Newton, NJ 201-689-3316

We will be dancing all summer, every Tuesday, at Christ Church, Main & Church Sts from 7-10:30 pm. Our program is primarily Classics & ROM's, our latest accomplishments being AUTUMN LEAVES & DOMINGO. Visitors al-ways welcome. No dancing May 27,July 1 & 29. Aug 3rd at Sussex County Fair in Branchville. We sponsored our first R/D party night in April.

It was great to see so many of our friends at our afternoon of rounds. TwoSomes & Rock-A-Rounds pinned our banner. There's still room for a few more couples at our R/D Mini Weekend in June. We'll wind down mid-June, then in the fall we start up again with our Intermediate RID Class at 7 and the club itself at 8:30. Have a dance full summer. The Sunday Classic groups are taking a summer hiatus, but will resume in the fall. Our Tuesday group will meet all summer. The first Tuesday in July we will be hosting a R/D party at the church to introduce some Australian cuers who are visiting our area. Hope you all can come and join us.

NNJ was most fortunate when over 10 years ago R/D leaders MAX & NANCY NOSKER were transfered to our area. Filling a R/D void in the southern part of NNJ, the Noskers started a R/D class, which grew into a healthy club, began cueing at several clubs & became very involved in the R/D Council. Now they say it is time to retire. Our sincere thanks for shar-ing your talents. We shall miss them at the mike, but hope to enjoy their company in the R/D circle for many years.

Some have join-ed the club, yet we suggest they retain their loyalty to their home club as well. All new graduates are invited to dance in our air-conditioned hall throughout the summer - don't take a chance on forgetting those new skills you worked so hard to learn! The more you dance, the easier it will be-come (like when you first learned to drive a car safely -remember?). For those who made the trip on May 4 & found us "closed", we apologize, we tried to reach everyone with announcements plus our phone squad. Would you believe we've moved AGAIN! Please note, we are now dancing at the American Czechoslovakia Farmers Club on the corner of Rt. 130 and Hankins Road - both our weekly Tuesdays class and our 1/3/5 Friday DBD work-shops. More & more dancers are finding our Friday workshops are great for reinforcing our Basic's and helping us to understand the PLUS calls. Every-one leaves the dances with such a good feeling. During the summer, we will be combining DBD workshop with the Marionettes on Tuesdays with Fred Fields and Marion Pearce alternating. In the Fall, Masqueraders plans to move to Friday evening-but dates will depend on the adult school. Contact any of our new officers for more information. Pres.: Cox; VP, Heyings; Sec., the Barnickels or the Hartungs, our Treasurers. Have a "dance summer".

We are ousy planning our first dance this year & trying to meet all of the qualifications for becoming a member of NNJSDA. We hope to become a board-run club while taking some of the work off Bill and Donna's shoulders and can use the support of singles as well as couples who can join our fun. Our students are great! Marge Resavage & Edith Constantino have sewn out-standing S/D outfits. Husbands Al & Mike are super proud of them. Us, too. Best wishes for a speedy recovery to Lil Maniscalco, who broke her shoulder. Hope by now Lil is doing a star-thru. That would make Marcia Labush happy. We're excited about the 2nd Night Owl Dance to be held at Temple Emanuel in Westfield, NJ. Filet mignon & S/D make a fabulous conbination. Can't wait.
