...we make saving money perfectly clear...

STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING?Dont replace the Frames... just the Panes!

Cloudy2Clear Windows Service With A Smile! Its been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Aaron Smith feels that its all about service. Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But its not just

about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didnt focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didnt expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole. Cloudy2Clear service Brighton, Hove & the surrounding areas

and Aaron is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. The truth is that its not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and

family of people Ive done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated. So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Aaron a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and hell be happy to help!

Hove husbands tribute to hisbeloved wife with charity fundFive charities are set to benefit from a fund set up by a Hove man, in tribute to his late wife.

When Arthur Greens wife Doreen died from cancer in 2008, he was keen to leave a legacy which would provide long-term benefit for local charities and organisations, particularly those helping young people, old people and hospices.

Arthur decided that with the legacy he had inherited from his wife, he would set up the Arthur and Doreen Green Fund through the Sussex Community Foundation.

He said: Doreen loved children but sadly we were not blessed with having children of our own.

As the sole surviving member of my family, the family line would have ended eventually but, with the help of Sussex Community Foundation, that will now not happen.

Not only will the fund be a permanent memorial to us both but, more importantly, the income generated by the fund will provide a contribution to the financial needs of some of the many worthy and deserving causes that exist throughout East and West Sussex.

    The Arthur and Doreen Fund

has already given out more than 35,000 to charities and community groups, and on Tuesday (August 4), nearly 13,000 will be allocated to five charities at a special ceremony.

Arthur will attend a reception at the Mayors Parlour at Brighton Town Hall, alongside the Mayor of Brighton and Hove, Councillor Lynda Hyde, The Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex, Peter Field and the High Sheriff of East Sussex, Juliet Smith.

Groups which will receive funds at the reception include St Barnabas Hospice, The Rockinghorse Appeal, Holland Road Baptist Church, The Martletts Hospice, and The Macmillan Cancer Centre.

The University of Sussex has been given the green light to build around 4,000 new student flats as part of its expansion plans.

The plans were given the go-ahead by the planning inspector after the proposals original rejection by Brighton and Hove City Council, it was announced yesterday (Thursday).

However, the public inquiry into the plans was cut short, when the council withdrew its objection.

    The university is due to

increase its numbers by 6,000 to 18,000 students in the next few years and made clear its desire for the campus at Falmer to be expanded to accommodate the extra students.

The plans also include new state-of-the-art academic and research facilities, and the preservation of architect Sir Basil Spences listed buildings.

The expansion is set to bring 500 million to the local economy and create an estimated 2,400 new jobs.

    BAFTA award

Louis Jackson, 11, of Hove, has won a BAFTA award for producing a video game called Block. One of nine finalists in the Game Making Award (age 10 to 14) category, Louis took the top spot.Judges described the game as a refreshingly original and surprisingly high quality concept; not only for this age category but for any up-and-coming game developer.Louis, who attends Blatchington Mill School, will now see his game developed by industry professionals.

    Health

    Cancer treatment

Building work has started on a new Radiotherapy Centre which will enable more patients to be treated quicker. The centre, funded by Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust, is being built at The Park Centre, Preston Park, and is expected to be completed in December 2015.The centre will have two Tomotherapy machines, state-of-the-art units which use high energy x-rays to treat a patients tumor. The service will be a satellite unit of the radiotherapy centre, based at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, and the additional radiotherapy machines will allow more patients to be treated in a more timely way.

    Charity

Reiki fundingRockinghorse childrens charity has provided funding for Reiki therapists, offering treatment to young patients at the Royal Alexandra Childrens Hospital.Reiki, a form of light touch therapy, is provided on an individual basis and patients on the High Dependency Unit (HDU) can be treated at their bedsides.Dr Kamal Patel, paediatric consultant at the Alex, adds: The Reiki treatment has improved sleep, fear, anxiety, distress and pain for children on our Paediatric Critical Care Unit over and above what we can achieve through modern medicine. To have such a fantastic team of people offering Reiki really helps our patients get better quicker. The funding will allow the therapists to double the amount of treatments they provide at the hospital, providing a sense of calm for the children and their parents.

    Railway

    Brighton Mainline

The rail minister Claire Perry has said a second Brighton Mainline is a priority for the government. In the letter to Sussex MPs, Mrs Perry said: I have said on a number of occasions that the performance on Southern Railway has not been good enough. There has been a clear decline on the Brighton Mainline for over three years. I have therefore made it my priority to oversee improvements on this franchise. This could mean a second mainline running to London, via Uckfield.

    Buses

    Smart tickets

Bus passengers with electronic smart tickets will be able to use them with more than one bus company in Brighton and Hove from next week.Until now, smartcard tickets, known as The Key, used on Brighton and Hove Bus Company services, could not be accepted by other firms. From August 3, the new scheme will be available on The Big Lemon and on all Compass Buses operating on the Brighton and Hove network. They can be bought online at www.buses.co.uk/thekey or at Brighton & Hove Buses North Street shop. Transport bosses say it will make cross-city bus travel easier and cheaper.

    Community

    Jumble Trail

The residents of Clifton Street have organised the first Clifton Street Jumble Trail and Community Day on Saturday, August 8, from 9am until 2pm. The morning consists of a charitable jumble trail with bric-brac, cakes, childrens clothes, art, vintage bits and bobs, and art. Some of the stall holders are selling in aid of charity. The street will be closed to traffic and there will be activities for children. The whole event was coordinated online at: po.st/CliftonSt

    Survey

    Smoking ban

The majority of people are in favour of a smoking ban on Brighton beach, according to a national survey. Many of those questioned (48%) said they thought stopping people lighting up would make traditional seaside towns more attractive places to visit and one in five (19%) said they would even travel further to visit a no-smoking beach. But just under a third (31%) of the 2,000 adults polled said they felt Brighton and Hove City Councils proposals are a step too far.Brighton and Hove City Council has begun a 12-week public consultation to gauge peoples views on the idea.

Successful first year for PR company

    NatWest sparks entrepreneurial ideas

Brighton businesses unprepared for new pension laws

    Business

From interviewing pop stars for national newspapers, to PR for the Catholic church, MatchFit Medias Ollie Wilson has done it all.

Founded by the former journalist with business partner Laura King the pair are celebrating one year since the launch of the agency.

On why he decided to move from the big smoke to the seaside city, Mr Wilson said: I wanted to be back in Brighton really. I wanted to work for myself and use my national experience to get Brighton and Hove businesses national coverage.

When you come to Brighton, you feel like it is your home. It is a great place.

Mr Wilson and Ms King, whose background is in higher education, specialise in PR campaigns, reputation management, blogging, social media, search-engine optimisation, business launches, and anything else which can boost business.

I enjoyed all of my jobs as a national reporter, communications director and

financial agency account director but, after 30 years, it is time to run my own show, said Mr Wilson.

I have teamed up with Laura King to launch the MatchFit Media because she is a creative dynamo, digital media specialist and expert business blogger. She directs our digital work and oversees brand development.

The firm has a big focus on digital, and moving businesses into the future through their online presence, whether it is blogging, e-newsletters or social media campaigns.

But there are also some old-school techniques - and with experience working for the Telegraph, Express and Daily Mail in showbiz and then foreign affairs, Mr Wilson said he knows what it takes to get national newspaper coverage for local businesses.

With a successful first year, and a client list including The Open University, as well as local businesses such as sunoso restaurant in Queens Road, MatchFit Media is keen to expand,

and build a bigger portfolio with large and small firms.

On launching a start-up in the city, Mr Wilson said: Brighton is a tremendously exciting place to start a business. There is so much going on and so much support for local business.

How to succeed as a serial entrepreneur

    Advertising feature

The July Brighton Chambers of Commerce pop-up breakfast is themed on serial entrepreneurs. Quartz Payroll and Auto Enrolment Managing Director Simon Hargreaves gave a short presentation about the best way to manage multiple business ventures.

Starting his career as a techy studying Artificial Intelligence, Simon moved into management consultancy for Accenture and Lloyds TSB before moving into investing and managing various businesses.

A background in a methodical and technical discipline helps to avoid the egoistical entrepreneur mistake that your confidence in your ideas can cloud your judgement to make calculated and tested business decisions.

Simon believes the biggest motivators in his success have been a competitive drive and his propensity to avoid boredom. Being confident enough to want to create the perfect business is paramount however succumbing to your hubris and ignoring warning signs that the business

is in trouble is a sad fate for lots of start-up companies.

All entrepreneurs are precious of their ideas however one of the most difficult keys to success is having the humility to acknowledge that the business plan and product may not succeed to fruition. You might have an innovative idea that would rival Air BnB but you must be willing to keep your feet on the ground, share your ideas and take on board feedback about how and even if to move forward.

Simon led a team of software developers to create an in-house the Enable Autoenrol service which is used in conjunction with Quartz Payroll for a fully managed workplace pension outsourced solution.

For more information about the service, visit: www.QuartzPayroll.co.uk

    Ollie Wilson

The entrepreneurs who have signed up to the NatWest scheme

A survey of Brightons small and medium-sized businesses by Quartz Payroll and Auto Enrolment reveals more than two thirds of local companies (70%) are still not prepared for the introduction of pension auto-enrolment.

This is despite the new government legislation coming into effect for SMEs over the next 18 months.

    The survey found that only

17% of companies in the city considered themselves completely prepared for the new pension laws.

This is compared to more than a third who feel completely unprepared.

Companies are also struggling to understand the important pension deadlines affecting their business, with three quarters of businesses admitting they do not know their auto-enrolment

staging date the date by which they must comply.

For businesses with fewer than 49 staff, the next staging dates are imminent, taking place on August 1, September 1 and October 1 - the staging dates for larger companies have already passed.

Kirsty Wild, Quartz Payroll and Auto Enrolment marketing manager, said: It is a real worry that so few Brighton

businesses fully understand their legal obligations in providing an auto-enrolment pension for their employees. Not only will staff be negatively affected by these inefficiencies, but employers themselves risk facing government penalties.

However, it is not too late and small and medium sized companies can set up a suitable

scheme in a matter of weeks!

Entrepreneurs were encouraged to hit the streets of Brighton to come up with ideas for entertaining children over the summer.

Around 80 entrepreneurs have signed up for Entrepreneurial Spark and NatWests hub for start-up businesses in Brighton - dubbed The Hatchery.

They were put through their paces at a bootcamp yesterday (Thursday), and encouraged to come up with business ideas, as well as exploring Disneys dream concept, where participants were asked to wear Mickey Mouse ears.

The two-day event, which continues today, will see the group continue to develop their ideas for a summer holiday business, and pitch their ideas

at the end of the day.Entrepreneurial Spark

recently took on the batch of 80 individuals who want to start their own business. They will benefit from physical office space and parking at NatWests Preston Road branch, superfast

internet, dedicated mentoring, regular events, workshops and training all free of charge.
