The online campaign has more than 8,000 signatures
much-valued support andhow it has changed theirfamilys lives. There are fears by
members of staff, that aredesign, which could seea decrease in specialistteacher roles but anincrease in teachingassistant roles, willchange the service forever.Brighton and Hove City
Council is determined thatthe high-standards of themuch-valued service willremain. It issued a letter this
week to parents, whichsaid there would bean extension to theconsultation about thechanges, to January 2016.The council said it
had no plans to reducespecial needs services for
children in the city.Whatever the result of
the consultation, it is clearspecial needs supportfor children is hugelyimportant to the familiesthat benefit from it.Lets hope whatever
decision is made on thefuture of the service isthe right one, for the
sake of the children whodesperately need it.
See pages 28-29 for aspecial feature on theSpecial Educational Needsservice, with a report onthe campaign, statementsfrom the council, and thestories of those who usethe service.
An exhibition of stilland moving images willcelebrate the history ofthe Circus Street Market, just weeks after it wasdemolished. The exhibition, at the
Onca Gallery from theNovember 13-28, is entitledHawkers Pick Over FruitHere, and is part ofCINECITY 2015, Brightonsannual film festival.Commissioned by
Brighton-based danceorganisation South EastDance, the exhibition isa collaboration betweenphotographer Zoe Manders(whose work is pictured, left) and filmmakers, straybird. It will explore the
generations of Brighton-based families whose livescentred around CircusStreet Market in decadesgone by.The exhibition will
allow visitors to explorethe images, sounds, andstories of the CircusStreet Fruit and VegetableMarket, which was athriving workplace formany Brighton families. As the market hall is beingdemolished, this exhibitionof still and moving imageryis a celebration of a way oflife that will soon be lost.Zoe Manders, exhibition
photographer, said: Withsuch a fascinating history,I knew it would be short-sighted not to look backover the colourful pastof the Market, and alsocelebrate it in all itscurrent derelict glory.Circus Street Market hasthat effect on people itinspires a potent mixtureof both nostalgia and awe.Becky Edmunds,
filmmaker with straybird, said: I loved interviewingthe men who have workedin different ways at the oldmarket site.Whether as market
traders, porters andbarrow boys, or as graffitiartists or past control, everyone we spoke to had aunique relationship to theextraordinary space thatwas Circus Street Market. The work will remember
the history of the sitewhereSouth East Dance will soonbuild The Dance Space - anew home for dance inBrighton and Hove. The Dance Space is part
of the Circus Street Marketdevelopment, a mixed-use regeneration projectby developers CathedralGroup PLC and partnersBrighton and Hove CityCouncil, University ofBrighton, and South EastDance.

The Uber app
The city councils licensingpanel announced it wouldgrant a licence for taxi appUber to operate in Brightonand Hove for one year. The licensing panel
announced the decisionlast Friday, four days afterit met to consider theapplication. The company can now
operate its private hirevehicles in the city - but hasto abide by the rules set outin the councils Blue Book- which sets out regulationsfor taxi firms in the city. There were concerns
from taxi companiesoperating in the city thatUber could undercut them, and would not operate bythe Blue Book, but Uber
said it would ensure itsdrivers stick to the rules. But Jason Kitcat, micro-
business ambassador atCrunch Accounting, said:Were really pleased thatthe council have made theright decision on Uber.Brighton is home to somany innovative digitalbusinesses it would havesent the wrong signal touse outdated laws to banUber.New digital platforms
likeUberareanopportunityfor new and existingbusinesses to prosper in thecity and we hope regulatorscontinue to support thoseopportunities. In a statement, Uber said
more than 85,000 people inthe Brighton and Hove areahad downloaded the app.

Review of sixth-forms and collegescould result in mergers or closures
Brighton and Hove CityCouncil is to carry out areview of the citys sixth-form education, aftermembers of the councilschildren and young peopleand skills committee votedunanimously to examinethe post-16 educationprovision. The Sussex Coast area
review - commissionedby the department forBusiness, Innovation andSkills and referred to as arestructuring of the furthereducation sector - couldsee the merging or evenclosure of colleges in thearea. The governments review
will include: BrightonHove and Sussex SixthForm College; City CollegeBrighton and Hove;Central Sussex College,Crawley; ChichesterCollege; Northbrook College;Plumpton College; SussexCoast College, Hastings;Sussex Downs College,Eastbourne; Worthing
College; Bexhill College;and Varndean College,Brighton. The Sussex Coast is one
of seven areas nationwidewhich will be reviewed.Thefirst began in Septemberand they will be carried outevery three months untilDecember 2016.A report laying out
the governments plansstated major reform ofpost-16 education andtraining institutions wasnecessary to addressthe significant financialpressures on institutions. The report said there had
been a decline in the 16-19population and a need tomaintain very tight fiscaldiscipline in order to tacklethe deficit. It added: We will need to
move towards fewer, oftenlarger, more resilient andefficient providers.Councillor Tom Bewick,
chairman of Brighton andHoves children and youngpeople committee, said:We want to make surethat our post-16 educationand training offering is thebest it can be for the young
people in our region. This is about balancing
the economic needs withthe education and trainingoffering. While the governments
reviewwill focus on furthereducation and sixth-formcolleges, Brighton and HoveCity Council will includeschool sixth-forms.Mr Bewick added: We
believe the justificationfor the inclusion of schoolsixth-forms is because theyare part of the family ofprovision, a proportion oflearners in the city attendthese schools and it is
important to include allproviders in the debate anddialogue. On top of this, post-16
provision and outcomes areone of our administrationsfour priorities. One of my actions
since election has beento establish an EmployerSkills Task Force to explorenew approaches whichincludes increasing thenumber of apprenticeshipsand considering waysto improve engagementbetween the city employersand our schools andacademies.

Pride in our city, all year roundCommunity groups arebeing invited to bid for agrant to put Pride in ourcity. For one weekend every
year, the city is taken overby a sea of rainbows. The message is clear:
whoever you are, whereveryoure from, whatever youdo; it does not matter. What matters is coming
together with friends andfamily and celebratingthat beautiful but rarelyachieved concept -equality.From the parade
watched by tens ofthousands through tothe festival in PrestonPark through to the streetparty in St James Street, the whole city comestogether to mark the LGBTcelebration. The addition of other
events such as TransPride, the Pride Arts andFilm Festival, the PrideDog Show, and DiversityGames means that now, more than ever, BrightonPride is more inclusivethan ever. But the celebration of
our citys LGBT communitydoes not end after that one
weekend in August; its apermanent fixture. The organisers of Pride
know this - and thats whysome of the money raisedat the event has been setaside as a social impactfund to do good in our city. The aim is to support
those groups ororganisations which needa little helping hand inmaking a difference intheir community. They do not have to be
LGBT related; they donteven have to be directly-linked to Pride (althoughapplicants directlyimpacted will be favoured). The impact just has to be
positive.It might be a residents
group that wants tocreate some planters for acommunal area.It might be a sports club
that wants a new bag ofballs. It might be a community
organisation that wants toput on an event. However big or small,
the only criteria is that itwill brighten up peopleslives by the time Pridecomes round again nextyear.
How to apply
The Social Impact Fundhas been set up to providesmall grants for communalgood. Grants are awardedannually to organisationsor groups within the citywith particular emphasison areas directly affectedor in the footprint ofBrighton and Hove Pride.Submissions should be
a maximum of 400 wordsmapping out how themoney will be spent andwhy the cause is deserving. Please note the maximumaward will be 1,000.Thereis no lower limit. There is no restriction
on numbers of entriesby individual groups. However, the emphasis ison supporting communityand grassroots groups, rather than individuals. Please submit it by
midday on November30 by email [email protected] will be
considered by a panel oflocal media editors withsuccessful applicantsinformed by the end ofDecember.Any money distributed
needs to have had a visibleoutcome by the start ofPride 2016.

Members of the HomeSweet Home campaign wentundercover in Brighton andHove last Saturday to findthat 80% of letting agentsare potentially in breach ofconsumer rights law.The team of local
campaigners covered a totalof 67 letting agents, andfound that 55 offices maynot be complying with the2015 Consumer Rights Act,which came into force onOctober 1. Letting agentswho do not comply with thenew requirements run therisk of council action and a5,000 fine.Home Sweet Home
campaigners assessedthe letting agents on theirmembership of recogniseddeposit protection anddispute resolution schemes, while checking their officesfor the proper display of afull fee schedule.Of the 67 offices visited,
only 12 were seen to becompliant on all three
counts. The biggest cause offailure related to fees, withonly 15 of the 67 officeskeeping a full list of fees ina place where it is likely tobe seen. With such a high number
of letting agents underquestion,Home Sweet Homemembers intend to maketheir next contact by letter- clarifying the changes tothe law, and recommendingbest practice in regard to theprominent display of fees. The letters will be hand-delivered on their secondround of visits in mid-November, along with HomeSweet Home certificates forthe 12 agents who passedall three checks.Summer Dean, campaign
leader, said: Our aim is touphold the letting agentslegal obligation to providetransparency to tenantsregarding the often hiddenfees they have to pay. Ourlonger-term goal is tocreate a more open andaccountable renting culturein Brighton and Hove, sothat people can start to seerising standards here. The Home Sweet Home
campaign includes local
councillors, Labour partymembers, and concernedtenants seeking to help thecause of private renters inBrighton and Hove. They aresupported by the broaderorganisation Movement forChange, which empowerslocal leaders to campaignon the issues most vital totheir communities.Delegates from both
Students Unions have alsobeen active in the campaign, and are working to producea comparison table of theagency fees collected.TraceyHill, leadcouncillor
for Private Rented SectorHousing, said: The CitizensAdvice Bureau reportsthat housing is the secondbiggest issue they deal with- especially regarding theprivate rented sector, which
is growing as fewer peoplecan afford to get onto thehousing ladder. Poor livingstandards, rising rentsand housing scarcity leaveprivate tenants extremelyvulnerable to the housingmarket. With nine million private
renters in England andan estimated one-thirdof private rented homesfailing to meet the DecentHomes Standard, HomeSweet Home taps intothe momentum gatheringnation-wide.

An ambitious plan hasbecome reality for the RoyalSussex Hospital - aftera 484m redevelopmentscheme was approved.Brighton and Sussex
University Hospitals NHSTrust has been celebratingafter hearing the treasuryis funding two replacementbuildings.Matthew Kershaw, chief
executive of Brighton andSussex University HospitalsNHS Trust, said: Thisredevelopment is a once ina generation opportunityto build on the excellentcare we currently provideto our patients and trulyimprove acute health carefor patients in Brighton andHove and across the region.A great deal of work has
gone into bringing us to thispoint and there is still muchmore to be done. The result though,
having a better hospital forall our patients and staff inthe years to come, is worthall this effort and more.Building work is set to
start in January 2016 and is
scheduled to finish in 2024.All clinical serviceswill be
available on site throughoutthe redevelopment, althoughsome will be giventemporary accommodationon site.Simon Kirby, MP for
Brighton Kemptown, saidhe was delighted at theannouncement. He said: This
redevelopment will enablethe hospital to provide thevery best facilities that thepatients and staff deserve. This is great news for ourcity and the wider area.I would again like to pay
tribute to the hard workingstaff at the hospital forputting together such astrong case.Warren Morgan, leader
of Brighton and Hove CityCouncil, said: The finalagreement on fundingis very welcome, butincredibly overdue. We began work on this in
2008, and granted planningpermission in January 2012,so it is a shame that patientshave been made to wait anextra three years beforeseeing the end of wards thatwere built before FlorenceNightingales time.

A thief who broke into aBrighton charity shop tosteal a safe containing 350was not entirely withoutconscience. For in place of the cast

Heart Foundations shop in London Road last Saturday, and police believe the thief struck overnight on Friday(October 23).PC Lucy Goering, of the Brighton Neighbourhood

A total of 14 people took on the challenge to see whether they could survive until sunrise by sleeping overnight in Brighton. Joining them for the overnight stay in the grounds of Patcham House School was special guest James Bowen, author of A Street Cat Named Bob. He gave a talk on his experiences as a homeless busker on the streets of London and how his adopted cat Bob helped him turn his life around.
As well as hearing James story, the participants then had to build their own cardboard shelter for the night and sleep out under the stars.
Markie Barratt, Sussex Homeless Service Manager, said: It really does bring home to you what struggles homeless people face and how important it is to provide support to some of the most vulnerable people in our society.
Brighton and Hove City Council has received 33,750 funding from the Arts Council to provide and enhance free Wi-Fi to library users.
The funding will upgrade the current public Wi-Fi in all libraries to fibre broadband and also bring the Wireless Access Points (WAPs) up to the new standard. These improvements will increase the speed and capacity of the Wi-Fi in each library so that library users get a better service. The work will take place before March next year.
Councillor Alan Robins, deputy chair of the economic development and culture committee said: Over the years our libraries have evolved from places to borrow books to providing a doorway to the World Wide Web. Id like to thank our library officers for securing this money which will help us to update and improve our services and continue to offer high speed internet access, which is valued by so many of our library users.

Catherine Bearder, a Liberal Democrat MEP for the South East, is demanding that tougher EU tests on emissions from diesel vehicles are urgently put in place to cut deadly pollution in places like Brighton and Hove.
Ms Bearder, said: Some diesel cars are now emitting four times more pollution than a bus. This is having a disastrous impact on air quality and peoples health in places like Brighton.
The newly refurbished auditorium in The Brighthelm Church and Community Centre was unveiled on Friday. The new lighting and sound systems have brought the building back up to date, as a modern conferencing space, theatre, church, and concert venue.
Speeches were made by Councillor Pete West, and Sally Barnard, former trustee, whose father was involved in the original construction of the Brighthelm Centre.
Geoff Raw was confirmed as chief executive of Brighton and Hove City Council at last Thursdays full council meeting.
He was recommended for the appointment of chief executive with the unanimous endorsement of the cross party recruitment panel. Mr Raw said: Its a real honour and privilege to take on this role, I promise to give it my all over the coming years. I dont underestimate the challenges ahead for us all but I remain excited and ambitious about the enormous potential of the city and the important role of the council in offering civic leadership.
Mr Raw joined the city council in November 2010 and has been acting chief executive since May. He was previously executive director of environment, development and housing for the local authority. His experience includes working for the Mayor for London as director of design, strategy and planning. He has also worked for the Housing Corporation as assistant director of investment, and national housing investment programme manager at HM Treasury. Mr Raw is married with one daughter and his interests include martial arts, Shiatsu massage, cooking, and gardening.
The University of Brightons School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences has received an award for its commitment to promoting the careers of women. It has received a bronze medal from the Equality Challenge Units Athena SWAN Charter, which encourages efforts to advance womens careers in science, technology, engineering, maths, and medicine employment in higher education and research.
A thief who broke into a Brighton charity shop to steal a safe containing 350 was not entirely without conscience.
For in place of the cast iron strongbox, they had left a drawing of a safe bearing the words: I O U anything I took and really am sorry.
The safe was discovered missing from the British Heart Foundations shop in London Road last Saturday, and police believe the thief struck overnight on Friday (October 23).
PC Lucy Goering, of the Brighton Neighbourhood Response Team, said: This was an unusual burglary in that the offender left an apologetic note, but this was nevertheless a significant loss for the charity concerned and we still need to trace the person responsible.
Anyone with information should call 101, with the reference 325 of 24/10.
A project to boost numbers of butterflies and chalk grassland in the South Downs National Park near Brighton has unexpectedly seen the return of the silver-spotted skipper butterfly, once close to extinction across the county.
The Brighton Blues project aims to improve and increase areas of rare chalk grassland, which several species of butterfly including the Adonis blue and chalkhill blue, depend on to thrive.
Neil Hulme, who works for project partner Butterfly Conservation, said: In the 1970s the silver-spotted skipper was so rare that its last two locations were a closely guarded secret. Its wonderful to see them now flying amongst the iconic blue species of the South Downs. Sightings at Anchor Bottom near Upper Beeding, Mill Hill in Shoreham and at Benfield Hill and Waterhall in Brighton and Hove show the first expansion in its range for nearly ten years.
Weve seen many other insects and plants benefitting from this work, showing that decades of decline in this rich and unique habitat can be reversed with good management.
Were on the rocks and the tides coming inEvery day, along our coastline stretching from
Brighton Marina to Worthing, people make 999 calls to Her Majestys Coastguard. Whether its someone out of their depth in the sea, or who has fallen off a cliff, or is stuck in the mud and unable to free themselves, its the Coastguard Rescue Team at Shoreham that will be on hand to help. But HM Coastguard needs volunteers for its rescue teams. Ordinary people doing an extraordinary job, called into action any time, day or night.
Graham Easton said: If you live in a coastal community, youll know how vital the Coastguard Rescue Team is to the area. These are people who are prepared to react day or night - often in matters of life and death. What they do matters. And we need more people like them to join.
Members of the Coastguard Rescue Team will be in Shoreham town centre on Coronation Green, each day from November 2-5, between 11am and 1pm, to talk to potential volunteers.
A Reeves and Mortimer show at The Brighton Centre has been cancelled after comedian Bob Mortimer underwent a triple bypass operation.
The pair were set to perform in the city on December 4, as part of a tour, but it was announced on Wednesday that the comedian would need to rest following the operation.
A spokesperson for Bob Mortimer, said: Bob would like to thank his consultant and all the nursing staff at the hospital for looking after him so well.
He now needs several weeks to fully recover, so unfortunately the first leg of the UK tour will be cancelled. Bob very much hopes to be fit and well enough to perform the second leg in January next year.
Ticket holders should contact their point of purchase for a full refund.

Peter Kyle, MP for Hove, visited Studio Loo, as part of Eco Homes 2015 - which showcased a dozen eco-homes and properties.
Once a disused, public toilet on Portland Road dating from the 1920s, interior architect Claire Potter has transformed the space into a fully functional office and studio which she now uses as her workspace.
Ms Potter said: We really believe that industrial buildings, especially small ones, should be reused and saved for the future, and our conversion brings together this ethos with our belief that eco construction and design is the only way forward.
Mr Kyle said: Everyone knows that Im a fan of innovation and entrepreneurial ideas as well as creating more housing with lower energy bills and less carbon footprint. So its been brilliant to be able to see all these things in action over the Eco Open Houses weekend.
Dozens of affordable homes will be built on the former site of Whitehawk Library in east Brighton, following permission being granted at planning committee on Wednesday.
The development, by the city council itself, is part of its New Homes for Neighbourhoods programme, which is building 500 much-needed new affordable homes on council-owned land.
The library has relocated to new premises at the Whitehawk Community Hub in Whitehawk Road. Plans feature two blocks providing 57 flats, including: 10 one-bed flats, 33 two-beds and 14 three-beds.
Brighton College was granted permission to build its 40 million sports and science building, by city planners on Wednesday.
The proposals, for the Eastern Road school, include a swimming pool and roof-top running track in the new four-storey building.
The existing Sports Hall, Chowen and Blackshaw buildings, and the Pavilion, will be demolished to make way for the new building, which will also include a car park, lecture theatre, and classrooms.
Construction is scheduled to commence start next summer, with completion in 2018.

Islingword Road is amodest end-terraced housethat wouldnt especiallyturn your head. In 1899,however, it was one of themost pioneering medicalcentres of its time and a
real life-saver for localwomen.The all-women staffed
Lewes Road Hospital andDispensary for Women andChildren, as it was called, was set up, according toits 1905 annual report, toafford to poor women ofBrighton the opportunityof free consultation withDoctors of their own sex.In these pre-NHS days,
access to healthcare wascostly. Charitably financeddispensaries filled the gapby offering cheap treatmentto societys poorest. Butwith its focus on womenand its all-female staff, thisone was radical indeed. An act allowing women to
qualify as doctors had onlybeen passed in 1876.Femaledoctors were few and far
between. In the modesty-ridden Victorian days ofkeeping your legs coveredand your head down, manywomen let symptoms gounchecked and illnessesuntreated, rather than beexamined by a male doctor. The Dispensary managed
to unite four of Britainsmost pioneering femaledoctors. Its co-founderwas Dr Helen Boyle, who, arriving in Brighton afterworking in Londons east-end, was particularlyinterested in the role playedby poverty in womensmental health. At first hand shed seen
how nervous exhaustionand depression wereexacerbated by insanitaryconditions and financialhardship. She describedthe lot of the woman livingin working-class areassuch as Hanover/ElmGrove as being neglectedand maltreated untilthey were turned into thefinished product - lunatics.Only a stones throw from
the Dispensary, at the topof Elm Grove, was BrightonWorkhouse - now BrightonGeneral Hospital - withits austere asylum block
looming over thetown.Dr Boyles aim
was to step inbefore the femalepatient ended upthere, leaving yetanother householdin ruins andchildren deprivedof their mother. The Dispensary
was so successful, space was found in1905 for in-patientsat a premises inRoundhillCrescent. This lead, in
1920, to furtherpremises in New ChurchRoad, the eventual LadyChichester Hospital forWomen and Children withNervous Diseases. This isnow the Aldrington DayHospital where a few weeksagoDrBoyles achievementswere recognised by theunveiling of a blue plaque.Dr Boyle went on to
become the Royal SussexHospitals first femalepsychiatrist and co-founderof mental health charity,MIND.The Dispensarys co-
founder was Dr MabelJones, whod opened a GPs
practice in Hove with DrBoyle in 1898.Brighton-based GP,
Dr Louisa Martindale, among whose many otherachievements includedpioneering the use of X-raysin cancer treatment - was avisiting medical officer.Vice-president was none
other than Dr ElizabethGarrett-Anderson, thefirst woman to qualify asa surgeon in Britain andfounder in 1872 of LondonsNew Hospital for Women, now named after her.Today most of us dont
give a thought to whether
the doctor we see is maleor female. But, for women, the struggle to enter themedical profession washard-fought. The LewesRoad Dispensary withits help for poor localwomen proved the hugecontribution that womencould make.

Space-age solar-powered binscausing problems in the Deans
Rottingdean residentshave taken to online forumStreetlife to voice theiranger at the increasinglitter problem.Brighton and Hove City
Council spent the summertackling ground pollutionby installing solar-poweredBigBelly bins that useenergy to compact waste toan eighth of its size.Neighbours on Streetlife
suggest the unorthodoxbins are being passedunnoticed and areinfrequently emptied. There are also fewer binsthroughout the village sinceBigBellys were installed.Tracy Holland, owner
of MadWaxCandles in theHigh Street, said: We usedto have a big bin oppositeoutside the old NatWestbuilding, but now we justhave one small bin which isuseless, as everything justflies out of it, and a space-age thing which doesnteven look much like a bin.Ms Holland has
personally witnessed
people littering outsideof her shop but added: Ithink people will use binsif theyre available but theones weve got are not veryobvious or too small.Councillor Anthony
Delow of RottingdeanParish Council said: Wewere not consulted at allby Brighton Council aboutthe solar-powered bin inthe High Street and it wasput in the wrong place, asbuggies are now unable topass.Brighton and Hove
City Council respondedby saying: There aremore than 1,000 litterbins located throughoutthe city, which makes itimpractical to consult oneach ones location. But wewill conduct a site visitto Rottingdean and movethe bin if it is causing anobstruction. The controversial
BigBellys are causing asimilar issue for businessesin Longbridge Avenue ofnearby Saltdean.Alan Pockney, owner
of The Gift Shop, has aBigBelly outside of his shopand said: Three bins were
removed from this stretchand replaced by an all-singing, all-dancing solar-powered bin.People often sit and eat
on the bench just outsidemy shop but they dontuse the solar-powered binafterwards and just chucktheir rubbish on the ground. So, every morning I am theroad sweeper outside myshop. The city council has
defended its decision andsaid: More rubbish canbe held in a BigBelly binthan a standard receptacle, which necessitates fewercollections and thereforemore time for our staff toperform duties includinglitter picking and streetcleansing. The BigBellybins are marked as litterbins and they have beenused successfully in otherareas of the city.

Thousandsof visitors and localresidents flock to theseafront from the stationand their first impressionis an inhospitable, cardominated street spoilt bysome awful buildings.
West Street suffersfrom a tacky image andmany of the current usesare a magnet for antisocialbehavior, with the deadfrontages created by thenightclubs and amusementarcades contributingnothing to the quality ofthe public realm. This is the primary
route between the station, seafront and the eagerlyawaited i360 and shouldbe Brightons equivalent ofthe Ramblas in Barcelona,a wonderful, vibrant, tree-

My Life Story release brandnew single after 15 years
Onemanswild ride throughsix seasons of BreakingBad
My Life Story head toThe Hope, Brighton, onFriday, October 30, witha new single 24 HourDeFlowerer. The pop group are best

the band reformed in 2006with a Best Of album andare now bringing out theirfirst new release in 15years.The 24 Hour DeFlowerer
single will be released onSunday, November 1, andwill make its live debut onthis tour, where fans canhear the new track for thevery first time.24 Hour DeFlowerer
is classic My Life Storywordplay with a stylethats similar to their pasthits.Last year, rock magazine
NME cited My Life Storyas one of the greatest lostbands of the 90s.Jake Shillingford, My
Life Story songwriter andfront man, said: In thepast few years Ive movedinto writing for movies and
TV (with My LifeStory tour guitaristNick Evans) and asmuch as it satisfiesmy orchestral andfilmic bent, I donthave much time towrite spikey three-minute pop songsanymore! He continued: So
I sat down with mytrusty old 12-stringand all thesetwisted coupletsstarted to fire out, asort of machine gunof vitriolic socialcommentary. I feltlike Id been reborn.Jake added:
While theorchestral line-up has beenindefinitely rested,I felt desperate toget out and air thenew material, tothe most patientand loyal fans onthe planet. The newsongs and soundcapture the NewWave influencesthat I grew up with.Despite the Baroque Popand Britpop tags that werehung on us in the early90s, the heart of My LifeStory was always the edgypassionate and honestsongwriting of Badfinger,Cheap Trick and Costello. The show starts at

BREMF presents the firstsurviving opera by a woman
An imaginative adventureof immense proportions
It wont just be semi-dramatised. It will befully staged - a landmarkproduction for theBrightonEarly Music Festival. We havent done
anything like this before!says co-artistic directorDeborah Roberts who isalso musical director forLa Liberazione di RuggierodallIsola dAlcina byFrancesca Caccini, thefirst surviving opera by awoman composer.Commissioned in 1625
as an entertainment inmusic, dance and dramaby the ruling regent ofTuscany, ArchduchessMaria Maddalena, it isperformed only very rarelynow - an omission Deborahis delighted to make good.Featuring Anna Devin
soprano; Denis Lakeycounter tenor; NickPritchard tenor; and youngartists in smaller roles,it will be staged in TheOld Market on Thursday,
November 5, at 8pm andalso on Sunday, November8, at 3pm and 7.30pm.We do actually know a
good deal about FrancescaCaccini, Deborah says, not about her personalityso much, but about her life. She was the daughter
of Giulio Caccini who wasbased in Florence. I thinkhe had two daughters whosang, and his wife wasalso a singer. Francescawas brought up with a fullprofessional training. Shedidnt just sing, but shecould play just about anyinstrument she tried. Shehad the sort of educationyou would normally expecta boy to get. A lot of girlsactually were educatedmusically by going into aconvent.
Convents were greatcentres of musicallearning, but Francesca
in fact had a very secularupbringing, very much atthe court in Florence. Andwhen she was taken on incourt in her own right, shebecame the highest paidmusician in the court. Shewas paid more than a lot ofbigger names at the time. This piece, La
Liberazione is all thatsurvives of her theatricalwork, but was by no meansall that she had a part in.There were things goingon every week, and themusic would have beencomposed by several courtcomposers, but there werequite a few pieces shewrote herself. She did infact write a large numberof pieces on her own 16stage works. They wouldnthave been called operas at
the time. The wordopera wasnt usedthen. They wouldhave been calledballo in musica, dance in music, andthey would end with
a whole series of dances.A book of Francescas
songs survives, plus La
Liberazione - and thats it.If you look at what
survives more generallyin early music, sometimesworks are published andget into libraries and thenthey survive, but in a lotof cases the music wasntwritten on the kind ofpaper that survives or, ifit was written on better-quality paper, the papermight get used again. There are a lot of casesof sheet music ending upbehind paintings! But LaLiberazione was actuallypublished because itwas written for quite animportant occasion, thevisit of a Polish prince thathad just won an importantbattle.Quite aside from its
historical significance, thepiece commends itself forits extraordinary music:Alcina is this beguilingsorceress who lures allthese men to her island, and when she gets fed upwith them, she turns
