As a Sixth Former at Brighton College, you will enjoy the best of all worlds: a supportive and dynamic academic environment, a friendly and caring school community, a wide range of sporting, arts and co-curricular activities, and a beautiful campus in one of Britain’s most vibrant cities.

Brighton College is one of the UK’s top co-educational schools at A-Level, with an enviable track record in Oxbridge success. But we are also home to talented athletes, dancers, musicians, artists and performers, and encourage all our pupils to explore their passions and become well-rounded, tolerant and confident individuals. We want you to achieve your full potential, to love your time with us, and to leave us ready to make your mark on the world.

Our campus is a wonderful mix of traditional and modern architecture, with award-winning teaching, boarding and social spaces only a stone’s throw from the beach. At the heart of the College, our modern Sixth Form Centre is a well-equipped space for study. There are comfortable social areas too, where you can relax with your friends. You will also be part of one of our 13 day or boarding houses,

with access to a Tutor, Housemaster or Housemistress, who are focused on the wellbeing and achievements of each and every pupil in their care. Our house-based system gives you the opportunity to develop your self-confidence and leadership qualities as one of the senior members of the school, while also enabling you to form good friendships from the very beginning.

Your academic journey begins in the Lower Sixth with the choice of four subjects from 26 options. You can then continue with three or four subjects to A-Level. Uniquely in England, you will also study our special history and international politics course, ‘Our Island Story’, which considers the events which are shaping our world, and how these may affect your future.

Our innovative Entrepreneurship Programme enables you to develop creative and commercial ideas and products, with £10,000 given to the winning teams to help them bring their ideas to market.

All our A-Level subjects are taught by specialist teachers who have a passion for their topic and who are there to support you as you make your choices for university and beyond. We run courses to prepare you for university entrance and interviews, while our extensive visiting speaker programme offers plenty of food for thought across a range of topical subjects.

Whether you are sporty, creative, musical or academic, Brighton College is the place to be. We don’t believe in stereotypes and encourage everyone to participate and enjoy developing new skills and interests. Our annual ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ competition for Sixth Formers is great fun for dancers and non-dancers alike, and our wide range of music, dance and arts events enables you to act, sing and perform as casually or competitively as you want. The closely-fought inter-house competition really has something for everyone!

We have a thriving programme of girls’ sport, including cricket, netball, tennis, hockey and athletics, as well as highly successful boys’ cricket, rugby, football and cross-country teams. Our sportsmen and women regularly win places on regional and national teams.

Our musical provision is outstanding, ranging from our renowned Brighton College Swing Band to choral groups and classical concerts. Our new £8 million Music School provides state-of-the-art practice rooms as well as a 150-seat Recital Hall.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

8

We believe that we all have a responsibility to contribute to the wellbeing of others around us. All our Lower Sixth Formers are involved in community-based activities, often as part of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme or the Combined Cadet Forces (CCF). Every year we all take part in our ‘Make a Difference Day’, when we undertake a wide variety of community projects across Brighton. Further afield, you can have the opportunity to experience and support our Sri Lankan educational charity ‘Extra Cover’, which was set up in 2004 by our chaplain after the Boxing Day tsunami in South Asia.

Around half of our Sixth Form choose to be weekly or full boarders, evenly split between boys and girls. Brighton doesn’t have Saturday school, which means that if you are a weekly boarder, you can leave on Friday afternoon and come back on Sunday evening or Monday morning as you prefer, giving you the perfect balance of four nights at school, three nights at home. If you board with us full-time, you can really benefit from all that Brighton has to offer, with many local events throughout the year, including England’s largest arts festival, a variety of sporting and charitable events, and of course, the famous Brighton beach.

We have five boarding houses, all of which face into the Quad, so there is a real sense of community and fun. In the evening, our award-winning Simon Smith building becomes a social hub for boarders, with a stylish and comfortable café, outdoor theatre space and wi-fi study stations. We have a rolling programme of refurbishment by a team of top London designers to ensure that our boarding facilities are as modern and comfortable as you would want.

As one of the leading co-educational schools in the UK at A-Level, we can help you reach the university of your choice, whether that is in the UK or internationally. Our most popular destinations are Oxford, Cambridge, UCL, Exeter, LSE, Imperial and Bristol, although our Sixth Formers also win places at specialist destinations such as conservatoires, drama schools, dance schools and sporting academies. We support you throughout your university application process and help you consider your options if you wish to take a gap year between school and university.

Our Old Brightonians association is a great resource for developing contacts and networks after school, while the experiences you will have had with us will leave you very well-placed to make the most of your career opportunities.

We are extremely proud of our pupils and all that they achieve, and hope that you will decide to become part of our Brighton community too. We promise that you will have the time of your life!
