Information for Visitors

Information for Visitors Opening TimesThe university will be open to visitors from 10.00am – 2.00pm and from 5.00pm – 8.00pm on Wednesday 3rd September 2014.

Help and Advice We have various help points and open day receptions throughout the campus. The main reception area for Open Day visitors is in the Centre for Executive Education. Further help points can be found by visiting the Govan Mbeki Building, Hamish Wood Building, Arc Recreation Centre and the marquee situated on the main concourse outside the George Moore Building (see campus map in the back page of this booklet). There are also plenty of Student Helpers on campus and are easily identified by wearing red GCU Student Helper T-Shirts. There are also ample Open Day signs around campus directing to the different areas. Plasma Screens throughout the campus will also have information on talk times and tours.

Glasgow Caledonian University welcomes people with a disability to Open Day, contact us on 0141 273 1371 or e-mail [email protected] or speak to an Open Day Helper on campus for assistance.

However, your son or daughter or school pupil may wish to go their separate ways. We have a dedicated a room for you to join other parents’/teachers for light refreshments throughout the day. University representatives and students will be available for you to ask any questions you may have.

Plan your dayOpen Day is packed full of talks, tours and interactive sessions - plan ahead so you don’t miss anything important. Look through the Open Day guide to make sure you don’t miss any vital talks, tours or interactive activities throughout the day. Most sessions are very popular so we encourage you to arrive early. And don’t be afraid to ask our Student Helpers to point you in the right direction.

Experience the campusOur city centre single-site campus is friendly, personal and close-knit. Be sure to see the entire range of campus facilities – from the ARC Sports and Recreation Facility to the accommodation available at Caledonian Court and visit the Students’ Association to find out all about our clubs and societies. Take a tour – the easiest way to get to know the campus.

Check out the LibraryYou’ll spend a lot of your time in the library as a student! Our award-winning Saltire Centre includes moving library shelves for easy access to books, “think pods” with whiteboards for group study, private “inflatable igloo” study areas and a coffee shop. Tours of the Library commence throughout the day or our librarian staff can assist with any questions.

Heart of the Campus We apologise for any inconvenience that may be caused due to building works on our campus.

GCU’s £30million Heart of the Campus project is now underway. This exciting vision for the future will enrich the student experience with the creation of state-of-the-art teaching, research and learning spaces and inspiring indoor and outdoor social areas. Over the next two years, the lower floors of two buildings, the George Moore and Hamish Wood, will be transformed and stronger connection routes will be created between the two buildings and the award-winning Saltire Centre. Outdoor space will also be revitalised with the introduction of three attractive landscaped courtyards.

The first phase of development centres on the ground and first floors of the George Moore building from June 2014 until summer 2015.The ground floor will be the home of the University restaurant and social learning space with the first floor dedicated to a new concept for Student Services which will be located in an easily-accessible and highly-visible location. When work is finished on the George Moore, the spotlight will fall on the Hamish Wood ground and first floors which will be under construction from summer 2015 to spring 2016. A glass pavilion at the front of the Hamish Wood will be a stunning new gateway for the University and a clear identity for the Glasgow School for Business and Society. It will lead to multi-purpose classrooms and a 500-seat flexible lecture theatre for exams, graduations, conferences and events. It’s part of a longer-term redevelopment strategy for the Hamish Wood which is expected to see the complete refurbishment of the building phased over a number of years, which will require further investment.
