Instructions for the assembly of Briese Reflectors supplied by direct for use with flash and used with Profoto mains generator packs

This guide demonstrates how to setup a Briese 140 Focus Reflector but the same method can be used on all Focus Reflectors.

Firstly start with the two items shown above called the Setup Helpers.

Face the reflector down on the floor and insert the helper rod clipping it into place as shown below.

Turn the reflector over and slide the cap down the column

Clip the cap to the inside as shown, you will then be able to connect and open the reflector.

Push the centre of the reflector by placing the reflector firmly against a hard surface, such as a wall.

For the larger reflectors (over 140cm) this can be difficult to complete therefore consider the location of your shoot for setup purposes.

Now remove the setup column and lay the reflector face down to continue the assembly

At Direct we hold focus reflectors designed for continuous lighting as well as flash lighting. In order to fit a flash spacer you will need to use the cardboard reducer to allow use with flash equipment.

Simply insert this with the clip facing out and clip into place on the reflector. The clip on the tube will be used to lock the flash spacer into place at the desired focus length shown later.

Taking the collar and stand mount unit, open the bright orange lever on the collar fully and place over the rear of the reflector and snap this shut to fasten.

Then simply drop the 28mm spigot into the stand you are using. The arm allows you to move the reflector upwards and downwards once the large bright orange handle is released.

Now you are ready to insert the flash spacer/column. Attach the B6 flash head to the column as shown below taking care to align the five pins correctly. These pins are delicate, if they don’t feel aligned correctly please don’t force them, instead remove and start again. Once connected screw the collar to attach fully to the head as illustrated

Then with the clip in the rear of the reflector released insert the column. Push the column in and re-fasten the clip.

The reflector should appear as the picture above. Now you are ready to attach the flash tube. Attaching the tube requires the alignment of five pins at the end of the column to the end of the flash tube as shown below. The flash tube has a metal disc attached to the front that it is clipped on, this is important in order to provide an even light source.

Hold the outer tube firmly as shown to prevent dropping, again taking care to align the pins correctly to prevent bending. Once this is done push the tube firmly until it is held flush as per the image below.

Once the flash tube is connected you will need to attach a small safety clip. This clip is important as it will prevent the user from sliding the column fully out and as a result ‘popping’ off the flash tube on the end.

Now you are ready to use the Briese Focus Reflector. Our Briese B6 flash heads have been converted to run from Profoto Pro8 air mains generators and the cable from the Briese flash simply connects in the way that any normal profoto head would. The Briese B6 flash head is capable of up to 6400 Ws.

NB . Please take care when using a silk on the reflector. If the column is extended too far the tube could make contact with and subsequently burn the silk.

Folding them inwards will create an even taut finish, if placed on the other way the silk will be too loose.

When breaking the reflector down, take care once again to hold the flash tube firmly and not to drop it as it is released from the column. Remove the column and the cardboard reducer from the reflector.

Then, simply using the setup helper column (not the flash column/spacer!) push against the black metal cap helper inside the tube. This will then snap the reflector closed and allow you to pack away.
