  • CRITERIA FOR APPOINTMENT OF

    EVALUATION PANEL

    Professor and Associate Professor or equivalent (ie senior fellow) and

    above from any higher learning institutions.

    Expert in the areas according to FRGS cluster.

    Assessor Credibility– (H-index/citation/publications/experience industry

    related.

    Experience as project leader for at least one research project at the

    Institutional/ National / International level.

    Experience as panel at institutional / national / international level.

    Currently not serving as top management from the same university (NC,

    DVC, Dean, Director of RMC).

    Being Professional and ethical.

    Awareness of the National Higher Education Strategic Plan (PSTPN)

    7

    Single-disciplinary (SD) project

    • Application of project involving a single discipline

    • Ceiling for each project is RM150,000.00 for the whole project duration

    Trans-disciplinary (TD) project

    • Application of projects consisting of at least three (3) disciplines (trans-disciplinary) transversing department/faculty/institute from the same university

    • Of common theme, and with similar expected result

    • Ceiling for the entire team is RM450,000.00 for the project duration

    • If any one of the projects fails in the assessment, the whole TD project will NOT be supported

    • Application is divided into two (2) modes:

  • Eligibility for Application

    Open to all academics from IPT and research institute: Malaysian citizen; and Permanent academic staff (Professor, Associate Professor, Senior

    Lecturer, Lecturer); or Contract staff - requires co-researcher who is a permanent

    academic staff. For non-Malaysians, co-researcher must be Malaysian citizen

    who is a permanent academic staff.

    Application from foreign branch campus: For non-Malaysians, co-researcher must be Malaysian citizen

    who is a permanent/tenured academic staff.

    Funding can only be utilized within Malaysia.

    Principal investigator (PI) is allowed to lead only one project but can be co-researcher in other projects per cycle.

  • Eligibility for Application

    New application can only be considered if the previous FRGS project has achieved a minimum 75% of the funding/milestone.

    Amount applied must not exceed the ceiling determined by MOHE.

    Every research project must produce:

    i. Three year project - (1) Ph.D or two (2) Masters students ii. Two year project - (1) Masters student

    Academic staff on sabbatical/study leave is not allowed to be the principal investigator but can be a co-researcher.

    Principal investigator who has transferred to another university/institute must relinquish the leadership of the project but can still be a co-researcher.

    Vote 11000 - (Salary and allowances for Graduate Research Assistant (GRA)

    Salary and allowances for Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) only.

    Maximum amount for salary and allowances is not more than RM2000 for a PhD and RM1500 for a Masters student or in accordance with the institutions guideline.

    Vote 21000 - (Travel and Transportation) Travel includes all domestic travel and transportation

    related to the project. Total expenditure for travel and transportation must not

    exceed 40% of the total project budget.

  • Budget

    Overseas travel (subject to approval from Assessment Panel) must meet the following criteria:

    Overseas travel is allowed only if the grant approved is enough. The principal researcher and co-researchers are allowed to travel.

    Overseas travel is only allowed for research paper presentation in conferences/seminars/workshops/colloquium

    Travel destination must be to appropriate places and economical in resources, expertise and technology transfer.

    Overseas travel must be in accordance with the particular institution’s regulation.

    A maximum of RM 15000 or 15% (whichever is lower) of the fund is allowed for attendance to conferences and other activities other than field work.

  • Budget

    • Vote 24000 - (Rentals)

    Rentals are only allowed for buildings, equipment, transportations and other items directly related to research.

    • Vote 27000 – (Research Materials and Supplies)

    Only expenditures related to the research is allowed.

    • Vote 28000 – (Minor Repairs and Modification)

    Only minor repairs and modifications are allowed for building, laboratories or other items related to the research.

    Maintenance of existing equipment is also allowed. Upon completion of the project, maintenance of the equipment will be borne by the institution and not by this grant.

  • Budget

    Vote 29000 – (Professional Services)

    Services includes printing, hospitality, honorarium, consultation, computer usage, data processing and others related to the research.

    Special services / One-off expenditure

    Includes cost to attend courses, short-term programme (once (1) only) to learn specific techniques related to the research.

    Duration allowed is not more than three (3) months.

    Total expenditure must not be more than 10% of the approved amount of the grant.

    Vote 35000 (Equipment and accessories)

    Only purchase of specialised equipment and accessories (including upgrading of existing equipments) related to the research are allowed.

    Please provide the list and justifications for all equipment and accessories requested.

    Total amount requested must not be more than 40% of the amount approved for the grant.
