Education Scotland ReviewBetween 5 and 7 March, Forth Valley College will be reviewed by HM Inspectorate of Education, which is now part of Education Scotland. They carry out reviews of standards and quality in colleges on behalf of the Scottish Funding Council.

WHO WILL BE COMING TO THE COLLEGE?

A team of eight reviewers will be in college during the review. Some of the team are full-time inspectors and others are senior members of staff from other colleges in Scotland. One member of the team, the Student Team Member, is a recent student from another college who has been trained by Education Scotland to help with reviews. The reviewers will visit all of our campuses over the three days.

WHAT WILL THE REV IEWERS BE DOING?The reviewers are looking for answers to four main questions:• How effective are the college’s

learning and teaching processes?

• How well are learners progressing and achieving?• How well are learners engaged in enhancing their own

learning and the work and life of the college?• How well is the college led and how well is it enhancing the

quality of its services for learners?

They will answer these questionsby:• Having discussions with learners and staff• Observing lessons• Looking at examples of learning materials, learner work and college statistics and reports

HOW WILL LEARNERS BE INVOLVEDIN THE REV IEW?

Learners are very important to the review process and the review team will find out about your experiencesand views in a number of different ways.

WHAT K IND OF QUEST IONS MIGHTI BE ASKED?

The reviewer may ask about• the course you are studying• how well you think you are learning and being taught • how you give your views on aspects of college life • the help and support you receive

• your college experience in general.

I S THERE ANYTHING I SHOULD DOTO PREPARE?

You might want to think in advance about what is really good and what is not so good about your learning experiences and overall college experience, so that you are prepared with examples if you are asked.

If you are in a group talking to a reviewer, please make sure you take the opportunity to express your views, but make sure that other learners have the chance to express theirs as well.

OBSERVAT IONSYou may be involved by being in a class that is observed by a reviewer. Don’t be at all put off by this and please contribute actively to your lesson as normal.

During the observation the reviewer will usually also have a chat with the class, however this is to find out about your experiences and not to test you in any way.

DISCUSSION GROUPSSome of you may be asked to attend a planned discussion group with a reviewer. If this is the case, you will be asked well in advance and additional briefing information will be provided.

The Student Team Member doesnot go into classrooms orworkshops, but may approachyou in any of the social areas ofthe college and will be interestedto hear about all aspects of yourcollege experience.
