FRom ottaWa:JewishFamilyServices:“We recently had the great pleasure of welcoming Karen and Shari from RoCK to our agency. the training was outstanding; It gave us relevant and practical information that we were able to apply immediately. their common-sense approach and teaching style engaged and inspired! While they came to share their knowledge and experience about the practical and operational side of developing a walk-in clinic, their knowledge and background in clinical work ensured they understood the specific issues that were important to us. We would highly recommend Karen and Shari to any agency wanting to open a walk-in clinic!”

FRom noRWaY:“our team in arendal in Southern norway was greatly moved by your articles and thoughts on walk-in single session work (RoCK provided email consultations). In February 2012, we started up a walk-in practice in the small municipality of tvedestrand, which is one of many municipalities that is served by our service, the department for child and youth mental health, Sørlandet Sykehus hospital, arendal. Since we started up the practice, the number of referrals to our central clinic from this municipality has been reduced by 30% (which is quite unheard of in child and youth mental health services in norway for the last 20 years). at the same time, the clinic has met with 35% more people (referrals + walk-in sessions) than before. Since your writings have been among the most central inspirations for this project, I think it’s important to let you know that you’ve had an impact on people and services in this galaxy far, far away. thank you again for this…”

FRom the dURham RegIon CollaBoRatIVe WalK-In ClInIC:“Karen Young and Surbhi Bhanot were a wealth of information as we began the planning stages for a collaborative walk-in. Karen continues to be a great resource as we work through the implementation and perfecting of single session practice.”

FRom poInt In tIme In halIBURton, ontaRIo:“I wanted to take the opportunity to personally thank you for all of your assistance to Family, Youth & Child Services of muskoka in developing our Counseling Walk In Clinic (CWIC). It certainly is an exciting time at our agency to be able to observe our clinicians develop and expand their skills so that they may be able to better support the families of muskoka and to respond to the increasing mental health needs of this community. I know that you have played a big part in helping us do all of the necessary work that it has taken to get us where we are today in developing this model, and we are greatly appreciative.”

the authors of this policy ready paper, sponsored by the ontario Centre ofExcellenceforChildrenandYouth,wereJimDuvall,Hincks-DellcrestCentre/gail appel Institute, Karen Young, Reach out Centre for Kids, and angela Kays-Burden. this policy paper outlining the overarching philosophy, therapeutic approaches and service delivery mechanisms for Brief Services, assisted to inform the system transition process that identified the Core Services in children’s mental health provision in ontario.

mandated CoRe SeRVICe In SYStem tRanSItIon:Core services that are now mandated to be available to clients in every community in ontario are divided into the following categories:

1. targeted prevention

2. Brief Services

3. Counselling and therapy

4. Family Caregiver Skill-Building and Support

5. Specialized Consultation and assessments

6. Crisis Support Services

7. Intensive treatment Services

eVIdenCe FoR BRIeF SeRVICeS:the evidence on clients’ length of involvement in services had shown that “the most common number of sessions attended by clients is one” (talmon,1990), for clients who continue, constructive change ramps up most in the first 2 to 3 sessions (hubble, duncan, & miller, 1999). Studies on change have found that it occurs earlier rather than later in the treatment process (duncan & miller, 2000). therefore, it is important to influence change when it counts the most—at the start. Brief Service delivery mechanisms are a key response to these findings and shift from a focus on problems to a focus on “making the most of every single session”.
