What the ConSUltatIon SeRVICe InClUdeS:Brief Services program design and Implementation:RoCK’s consultant will provide your organization with thorough and detailed information of the many different ways of designing a walk-in therapy clinic, as well as other methods to structure brief service delivery. this will include content and expertise derived from RoCK’s own clinic, as well as the many clinics and brief services that RoCK consultants have assisted to design and implement. the consultant will work with your team to specifically shape the service to your organization’s and your community’s needs. this can include design of questionnaires and other paper work that will be needed at a walk-in or brief service. We will work with you to develop the details of every step along the way toward implementation, as well as providing ongoing support for solving problems as they arise prior to and after opening your clinic or brief service. this service can be provided at your organization or by internet or teleconference.

designing Brief Services program evaluation or Research:RoCK is a leader in the province in the design and implementation of program evaluation and research of walk-in clinics and brief services. one of our research consultants can provide your organization with a clear, step by step plan for implementing evaluation and/or research of your existing walk-in clinic or brief service and can plan with you in advance to imbed evaluation easily into your newly opening brief service. this consultation service can be a part of the above program design and implementation consultation or can be offered separately.

RoCK’S WalK-In ClInIC eStaBlIShed In 2001:lead agency in Current (2014) provincial evaluation of Brief Services:With funding from the ontario Centre of excellence, Reach out Centre for Kids and the hincks dellcrest Centre, worked together with 5 partner organizations to design the very first in ontario comprehensive look at the effects of brief therapy/walk-in therapy for clients. the evaluation partnership spans multiple organizations, multiple ways to deliver brief services, and multiple therapeutic approaches for brief therapy, across a client age-range from 0 to 24 years.

KaRen YoUng, mSW/RSW

Karen is the manager of the Centre of learning at Reach out Centre for Kids where she provides supervision to interns, students, and staff, organizes training, oversees research projects, and supervises and provides single session therapy at the walk-in therapy clinic. through her role at RoCK, Karen has provided consultation to many organizations in ontario, Canada, and internationally regarding re-structuring service pathways to include Brief Services delivery mechanisms such as walk-in clinics. Karen is also a faculty member with the hincks-dellcrest Institute managing and teaching in the Institute’s year-long certificate program in Brief and narrative therapy, the narrative therapy training Certificate program, and providing many workshops. She is a therapist with 30 years of experience working with children and families and has situated her therapeutic conversations within narrative practices for 25 years. Karen has contributed numerous publications regarding applications of brief narrative therapy and research in brief services and walk-in therapy. She recently co-authored the policy paper for the ontario Centre of excellence forChildandYouthMentalHealth(Duvall,J.,Young,K.,Kays-Burden,a., 2012), no more, no less: Brief mental health Services for Children and Youth. Karen was the lead in the very first in ontario Brief Services evaluation project, 2014, a multi-organization evaluation of brief services across seven different Children’s mental health agencies.

ShaRI leCKeR,m.ed Shari has a master of education specializing counselling psychology from mcgill University and she is a therapist with 23 years experience working with children and families. For the last 8 years Shari has been a manager of Clinical Services at Reach out Centre for Kids where she provides leadership to a multidisciplinary clinical team including supervision to clinical staff, psychology residents, interns and graduate students. Shari has a passion for training and mentoring counsellors and therapists and she was awarded excellence in Social Work practicum teaching from laurier University. Shari oversees RoCK’s Walk In Counselling Clinic, and provides supervision, consultation, assessment, and single session and brief therapy. Shari adheres to a strength based, client focused approach in her clinical intervention. She has a strong theoretical background and extensive applied practice using evidence based models such as narrative therapy, Cognitive Behavior therapy and attachment Focused therapy. In her role at RoCK Shari has also been integral to the configuration, implementation and training of RoCK’s clinical database.

SURBhI Bhanot-maholtRa, phd

dr. Bhanot-maholtra is the Research associate at Reach out Centre for Kids. She oversees all program evaluation and research activities at the agency. She has a phd in applied Social psychology with expertise in program evaluation, mixed methods research and quantitative statistical analyses. She has over 10 years of experience conducting research in both academic and community settings.

through her role at RoCK, Surbhi has provided consultation to organizations that require assistance with conducting program evaluation, including consultation in designing evaluation and research for walk-in clinics. She has provided guidance around general research methods and design to community organizations through her role on a variety of halton region committees.

Surbhi has been the lead investigator on a number of grants awarded through the ontario Centre of excellence for Child and Youth mental health. She is currently the lead investigator in the ontario Brief Services evaluation project.

CaRolYn SCholz

Carolyn Scholz is a Research assistant with Reach out Centre for Kids. her current portfolio includes the Brief Services evaluation project, an ontario wide multi-site evaluation lead by Reach out Centre for Kids and the hincks-dellcrest Institute. on this project, her responsibilities include assisting in research design, supervising data collection, data analysis, therapist interviews, and report writing. Carolyn has also been a member of the Quality assurance department at Brant Family and Children’s Services, where she has participated in a variety of research projects, including those relating to outcomes of the Family group decision making process relating to children in care, and medical practices regarding Crown Wards in ontario. She has also served as a research team member on various projects at mcmaster University, relating to post-natal maternal health, and supporting caregivers of people with dementia.

eVIdenCe FoR BRIeF SeRVICeS:the evidence on clients’ length of involvement in services had shown that “the most common number of sessions attended by clients is one” (talmon,1990), for clients who continue, constructive change ramps up most in the first 2 to 3 sessions (hubble, duncan, & miller, 1999). Studies on change have found that it occurs earlier rather than later in the treatment process (duncan & miller, 2000). therefore, it is important to influence change when it counts the most—at the start. Brief Service delivery mechanisms are a key response to these findings and shift from a focus on problems to a focus on “making the most of every single session”.
