Grade 2-Activity 4:Dream Jobs

Career Activities and Competencies

Activity Overview:Paws in Jobland isn’t just about “everyday” jobs (whatever they are!). One of the goalsof the program is to present a wide variety of jobs. At this stage, children should beencouraged to use their imagination and give creative consideration to what they mightdo when they are older. This activity may also help to reveal new jobs students may nothave been familiar with.

Preparation Time: 30 minutes

Implementation Time: 30 minutes

Materials/Resources Needed: Worksheet 2-4, Crayons/fibre-tip pens

Learning Objectives:1. The student will use imagination to explore the world of work.

2. The student will practice writing skills.

Activity Steps:1. Ask the students if they have ever thought about what job they would do if theycould do anything. Encourage them to let their imaginations soar. The jobs can be onesthat already exist, or they could be fantasy-based - made-up jobs that relate tosomething the students enjoy doing. If students are struggling to think of dream jobs, they could use Paws in Jobland to get some ideas, or you could provide a list of jobs.

2. Ask them to write down the job with a description of what it involves. Drawing apicture of themselves in the job environment will encourage them to further imaginehow the job might be done, and where.

3. The class could discuss all of the ideas that come up. For jobs such as footballmanager and pop star there are few opportunities and a lot of competition, but thatdoes not mean that the students should not be encouraged to follow interests in sportsor music.

Activity Enhancements:1. Show photographs or videos of well-known people doing their work. (This couldinclude documentary programs about people doing their jobs). Indicate that famouspeople are doing jobs when they act on television programs, perform on stage, playprofessional sports, etc. Discuss how these jobs are like many others, with certain hours, pay and conditions. You could also look at how these jobs differ from more “ordinary”jobs, such as those presented in Paws in Jobland. Fame may bring with it pressures notfound in “ordinary” jobs, such as time away from home, lack of privacy, etc.

2. Encourage students to write a letter of application for their dream job.

3. Display the pictures of dream jobs drawn by the students, along with photos offamous people (perhaps doing similar jobs to the dream jobs). Also display some items(such as equipment or tools) that are used by those doing the dream jobs.
