Measures taken to achieve Economy in Design
Revision of Provisions related to crack width in IRS-Concrete Bridge Code (CBC):- The provisions regarding crack width were very stringent nearly 80% additional reinforcement were required to be provided, to comply the instructions as compared to reinforcement required for moment/load
considerations.
With revision in crack width requirements (issued in Dec 2014) there will be saving of Crores of Rupees on year to year basis. (BMRC projected saving of Rs 2.5 cr per km of Metro construction).
Deletion of para 14.9 and 15.9.9 of IRS-CBC having provisions regarding Shrinkage and
Temperature reinforcement in contradiction to distribution reinforcement. Nearly 2-3 tonne additional reinforcement were required to be provided to follow these provisions in each RCC Box (for two line). These being redundant have been deleted. RCC Box designs have been modified.
A&C 5 to IRS-CBC (reprint 2014) dated 13.06.2017 issued. Clause 16.4.4.4.5 modified and
maximum spacing of shear stirrups in PSC increased as per reference code i.e. BS: 5400. This will
reduce congestion of shear links as well as quantity of shear reinforcement in PSC.
Newly designed PSC U slab for 12.2 m span weighs only 89t against existing PSC slab of 163t,
requires about 30% less height above bed block level, economical, replaceable with Plate Girders & shall facilitate continuation of LWR on Bridges.
Additional forces are to be considered for bridges in curved track. Generally bridges are planned in
straight alignment. To achieve economy, separate designs have been issued for twin RCC box i.e. for straight and curved alignment. Updation of Codes & Manuals
Various modifications proposed or carried out in codes and manuals with due deliberations are as under-
IRS-Concrete Bridge Code-
Re-print of Indian Railway Standard Concrete Bridge Code (IRS-CBC) (incorporating 13 A&C) – Indian Railway Standards “Code of Practice for Plain, Reinforced and Pre-stressed concrete for General Bridge Construction”, (Concrete Bridge Code) was issued in year 1997. Thereafter, 13 correction slips were issued. Many clauses were modified by A&C 1 and 12, itself. Some clauses were modified by more than one A&C. Therefore, up in July 2014 and the
IRS-CBC code reprinted in September 2014. Soft copy in PDF format uploaded on RDSO intranet site i.e. 10.100.2.19. The following corrections slips have been issued/ proposed –
A&C-1 to IRS-CBC (reprint 2014) dated 16.12.2014 issued. Provision of crack width in IRS-CBC
were examined in relation with provisions in other codes. Existing provisions were considered too stringent and accordingly, modified.
A&C 2 to IRS-CBC (reprint 2014) dated 14.01.2015 issued. Clause 5.4.7 of IRS-CBC. Provision of coating for concrete bridges re-introduced.
A&C 3 to IRS-CBC (reprint 2014) dated 20.01.2015 issued. Clause 4.5.1, 14.9, 15.9.4.1, 15.9.4.2 & 15.9.9 of IRS-CBC pertains to use Fe-500 grade or higher grade steel for reinforcement.
A&C 4 to IRS-CBC (reprint 2014) dated 15.11.2016 issued. Clause 14.9, 14.9.1 & 15.9.9
pertaining to provision of shrinkage and temperature reinforcement deleted.
A&C 5 to IRS-CBC (reprint 2014) dated 13.06.2017 issued. Clause 16.4.4.4.5 modified and maximum spacing of shear stirrups in PSC increased as per reference code i.e. BS: 5400.
A&C 6 to IRS-CBC (reprint 2014) dated 27.07.2017 issued. Clause 7.1.5 modified and use of Stainless Steel Reinforcement as per IS 16651:2017 permitted in unavoidable circumstances/extreme cases.
A&C 7 to IRS-CBC (reprint 2014) dated 26.06.2018 issued regarding addition of stainless steel
reinforcement also as a type of reinforcement & deletion of provision for application of cement slurry coating to the reinforcement.
A&C No. 8 to IRS CBC (reprint 2014) dated 23.05.2019 issued regarding HDPE sheathing, stress-
strain curve, Lever arm formula, unit of Relative Profile Vol., Heading of Table B-1and B-2 & figure B1-2.
A&C No. 9 to IRS CBC (reprint 2014) dated 08.07.2021 issued regarding Coatings for Concrete.
Item 1060 regarding Use of Corrosion Resistant Reinforcement was delivered in 84th BSC. The committee recommended that existing provisions are enough. Only in extremes & coastal areas (upto 30 km from coastal areas) & unavoidable circumstances Stainless Steel Reinforcement bars may be used.
