Cracking the (dress) codeDecoding weddingspeak on yourinvitationBy Danielle BraffGateHouse News Service

Don’t toss that weddinginvite as soon as youmark the date on your

calendar. There’s actually a lotyou can learn about the wed-ding from that one piece ofmail.Amy Eisinger, associate edi-

tor of WeddingChannel.com,decodes the wedding invitationso you’ll be totally prepared forthe big bash:

White tie This is the mostformal of all wedding dresscodes (think state dinners andthe Oscars). He should wear atuxedo, a long black jacketwith tails, a white pique vestand a bow tie.Black, formal shoes and

even white gloves for dancingare appropriate. She shouldwear a formal, full-length ballgown in a neutral color likedark brown or black.

Glamorous makeup anddramatic jewelry and hair areappropriate.

Black tie This is the second-most formal wedding dresscode and usually means thewedding is an evening affair. He should wear a tuxedo, blackbow tie, cummerbund andpatent leather shoes. She should wear a chic cock-

tail dress or a long eveninggown in a dark, neutral colorlike brown or black. The bride, wedding party or

friends can help answer ques-tions about the appropriatedress length.

Casual dress Generally, ca-sual means “anything goes.”That said, jeans, shorts andtank tops are probably not ap-propriate unless they're specif-ically noted as acceptable. For the purposes of wedding

wear, assume business casualto be on the safe side. Heshould wear dress pants with abutton-down shirt or polo. She should wear a summer

sundress or a skirt or pantswith a nice blouse. Makeupand hair can be natural.

Beach wedding He shouldwear a linen shirt linen pantsor khakis, and sandals.

She should wear a summersundress at tea- or knee-length with flat sandals.Makeup and hair can be natu-ral.

Starting time Most invita-tions will list the ceremonystart time, so prepare to arrive15 minutes before to find aseat. If the ceremony time is not

listed, assume that if the cere-mony is in a church or temple, the start time is the ceremonytime.

If the ceremony is takingplace at the reception site, most will arrive at the invita-tion time and the ceremonywill start later.

Catholic church Typically, wedding ceremonies last 30minutes, but a traditionalCatholic wedding Mass lastscloser to an hour.A wedding that does not

include a Mass can be ap-proximately 20 minutes longand usually includes read-ings, hymns and psalms aswell as blessings from thepriest but does not include acelebration of the Eucharist(Holy Communion).

It all seems important: Find-ing the right DJ. Picking outthe perfect cake. Pruning

the guest list to the perfectnumber. But what’s more important to

a wedding than memorablevows? Couples who write theirown vows put their personalstamp on a wedding ceremony. The good news is that writingthe perfect wedding vowsdoesn’t have to be a challenge. It’s all about the bride andgroom sharing with their gueststhe reasons why they’ve fallen inlove.

“Personality is keyThe bestwedding vows are sprinkled withpersonal touches. The groommightmention how he acciden-tally knocked over the bride’s softdrink during their first date.Thebridemightmention the first timeher future husband opened hercar door for her.“It should haveenough personal touches … sothat the people at the ceremonyrecognize that the couple wrotethem, and that I didn’t,” said Lar-ry James, a wedding officiantbased in Scottsdale,Ariz.

Take the pressure off Anotherkey to successful vows? Thebride and the groom shouldn’tforce themselves to memorizeanything. James prefers thatcouples write their vows on indexcards. They can then read themwithout having to worry aboutforgetting a key phrase or sen-tence.

Short and sweet James recom-mends that couples keep theirwedding vows to five or six lineseach. This, too, can reduce thenerves that naturally come onwedding day.“How long the vowsare really isn’t the important part. What’s important is what thecouples say during their vows,”James said.“So what if thegroom talksmore than the bride? That’s not important.”

VenueAfter years of attending ho-

tel ballroom receptions, cou-ples who get married in thecold months want to have awedding that’s different thanothers they’ve been to.“We wrack our brains to

find unique spaces for bridesnow,” Andahazy said. “Nobodywants a hotel.”Industrial and loft spaces

are popular wedding venuesright now, she said. Décor canbe anything from modern totraditional, and the two stylesmix together nicely, says An-dahazy. Mirrored tables and

wooden tables may be placedin the same room together;lighting can be soft, romanticcandles or bare light bulbs.“The whole eclectic mix is

very hot,” she said.

Branding and themeMany couples are getting

married later or getting mar-ried a second time, so theywant their weddings to bemore about the celebrationthan the pomp and circum-stance. Some want a night-club or party feel with loungechairs, and others choose adifferent theme and decorate

accordingly.One couple Andahazy

worked with chose an Italiantheme. All their guests sat atone long table that went allthe way around the dancefloor, with each area of thetable representing a differentregion of Italy.

DressesDress trends don’t change

much from year to year. Manybrides and bridesmaids stillwear the traditional attire, even if the reception setting isnon-traditional, Andahazysaid.According to thebeautybri-

dal.com, “texture, alternativenecklines and mild pops ofcolor” are the hottest trendsin bridal gowns. Ruffles, ruching and crystal or pearlembellishments are seen onthis season’s dresses.

FavorsNo matter what the trends,

weddings are still costly, andfavors are often a way couplestry to cut costs. However, when they do give their guestsa token of thanks, that’s get-ting more creative, too, Anda-hazy said. One fall bride gaveout apples in bags with thecouple’s names.

FlowersSimple is still in, according

to yourweddingcompany.com.Most bridal bouquets are sim-ple — flowers tied with a rib-bon. It’s in the reception cen-terpieces that couples get cre-ative, Andahazy said. For winter, tall, bare

branches with candles arepopular. Flowers can be usedcreatively to bring brightnessand life to a room when theweather is less than perfectoutside, she said, and any-thing is possible, from smalltouches to a wall of roses.

When you are trying to make an event stand out - from a prom to a wedding - even for a funeral, one of the first things that comes to mind is special transportation. A stretch limousine rental will allow you to move a group of people in comfort, style and privacy.

Travel in StyleProvide that ‘extra special’ touch that ensures you’ll remember the event for years to come.

Some of his co-workerswho got married in the 1980stold him they didn't evenknow what kind of flowerswere in their bouquets. Manyjust showed up at the church, wore a white dress and werehanded a bundle of blooms. Now, as a designer for wed-dings at Flora, a Chicagoflower shop, Randy Balles-teros often works with brideswho know exactly what theywant thanks to TV, bridalmagazines and celebrity nup-tuals. "I've noticed with mostbrides, its not particularlyabout the type of bloom, it'sabout color palette," he said.

Dahlias are popularamong fall brides. Other sea-sonal fall flowers includeaster, chrysanthemums, marigold, sunflowers, hy-drangea, ornamental berriesand zinnia. Ballesterosadded that many fall brideswant bouquets full of fallhues such as red, orange andyellow, which can beachieved by tucking autumnleaves and acorns into a bou-quet. Adding Japanese mapleleaves or black calla lilies of-fers a dash of deep red color.

And winter brides canevoke the spirit of the seasonby building bouquets that in-clude evergreen, holly, berries and pine cones.Fisher said other flowersthat are in season includeamaryllis, anemone, molu-cella (Bells of Ireland), cos-mos, holly, jasmine, poinsettia, sweet pea, tulipsand waxflower. She saidtrendy winter brides haveeven started adding feathersto their bouquets.

There are also severalblooms that are availableyear-round, such as roses, or-chids, calla lilies, gardenias, lily of the valley, scabiosa —even carnations.

When working with aflorist, Ballesteros suggestsbrides bring photos of theirdress, swatches of theirbridesmaids' gowns, a snap-shot of their reception venueand images of flowers theylike — and don't like — tostart bouquet-building.

E xperts agree that the April wedding of Prince William andKate Middleton was elegant and sophisticated – a perfecttemplate for any bride seeking a fairy-tale affair. While

we’re certain to see more demure, lace-sleeved gowns likePrincess Catherine’s in upcoming weddings, here are four othertrends we could see inspired by Britain’s big day:

Ideas for that perfect first dance songY PAUL EISENBERGGateHouse News Service

When it comes to thatfirst trip around thedance floor as wife

and husband, the moment tru-ly can last for a lifetime.Because it’s something that

will be remembered for yearsto come, people put a lot ofthought into the music thatwill accompany that firstdance. Benjie Hughes, ownerof Backthird Entertainment inAurora, Ill., which offers livemusic and DJ services for wed-dings and other events, said forthat reason it’s hard to pindown the most popular songsfor those first dances, be theyfor brides and grooms, mothersand sons or fathers and daugh-ters.“A lot of times, there’s a story

or a personal connection with asong they want to use,” he said,The nature of the music indus-try these days adds to the di-versity of choices as well,Hughes said. There aren’t asmany albums that everybody’s

listening to, but musicianshave a lot more ways to gettheir music out to people.Still, some standards find

their way into more weddingreceptions than others, espe-

cially in the parent dances.Frank Sinatra remains time-less, Hughes said, when daugh-ters dance with their dads. Some newer songs, like TimMcGraw’s “My Little Girl” and

“Find Your Wings” by MarkHarris, seem to have been tai-lor-made for daddy-daughterdances.And with first dances, there

are songs that transcend time

and circumstance and remainfavorites, such as Louis Arm-strong’s “What a WonderfulWorld,” “At Last” by Etta Jamesand “Unchained Melody” bythe Righteous Brothers.

Traditionally the phrase“wedding centerpiece” con-jures up images of lavish flo-

“People are actually veer-

when you’re getting married, so let us worry about the flowers.

your centerpiece.” Lookfor glass apothecary jars ofvarying heights and fillthem with candy thatmatches the color schemeof the wedding. At the endof the night, guests canscoop out the candy andtake it home in small bagsor boxes. This approach“does double duty and it’svery elegant.” Whileapothecary jars are soldonline, McLamb finds hersat discount stores likeMarshall’s and TJ Maxx, usually for $10 to $20apiece.

Fruitful decor Anothertrend McLamb sees often, especially in summermonths, is replacing flo-rals with fruit. Cut lemonsor limes (or both) in halfand arrange them in anapothecary jar so the cuthalf of the fruit is facingoutward. Fill the containerwith water and add float-ing candles or greenery onthe top. Simply arranginguncut lemons or limes inthe jar works too, saysMcLamb: “Fruit is, again, much cheaper than flow-ers.”

Branch out Center-pieces of tall branches, like birch, are perfect for awinter wonderland theme, says McLamb, though theycertainly work year-round.String the branches withcrystal strands, she says,or hang votive candlesfrom them.

Feathered focal pointMcLamb has also seen cen-terpieces of ostrich or pea-cock feathers, fanned outof tall vases so they almostresemble palm trees inshape. These tall center-pieces also make it easierfor guests to see eachother across the table.
