What you do by gIvIng?When you give, you generate hope. And in so doing, you not only give but also receive. You receive a place in the heart of a child that he or she will carry for the rest of its life.   You also become part of a network that  is actively engaged  in  bringing  hope  where  there  is  very  little  or none at all. You contribute to sustaining the Centre for Culture and the Arts in a major shanty town, that, through its programme ‘Art in situations of Conflict’, has transformed the lives of hundreds of children since its foundation in 1990, provid-ing  them with alternatives  to violence, drugs, crime and social and collective anonymity. You help vulnerable children become empowered so that they  may  become  protagonists  for  peace,  symbols  and agents of transformation in their own families and in their own communities. You help maintain the retreat centre, ‘City Of The Angels’, in  the  country where  children  from  the  shanty  towns  can experience the power of nature to heal the wounds inflicted on them by injustice and abandonment.

a Message fRoM the chIldRenOnce upon a time, there were two children skating on a frozen lake. All was bright and joyful till suddenly, the ice broke  and one of  them  fell  between  the  cracks  into  the frozen water.  The other,  seeing  that his  companion was going  to  drown,  took  a  stone  and  pounded with  all  his might till he opened a hole big enough to pull his friend out.  Some  adults  passing  by,  saw  the  scene  and  were amazed  that  one  young  boy  had  managed  to  save  his friend in such a courageous and self-less way.

‘How did you do it,’ one of them asked. ‘I don’t know’, replied the child. ‘I just did it. He was my friend’. ‘I know how he did it’, said one of the adults present, a wise old man of the place. ‘How’? They all asked ‘There was no one near enough to tell him that it was impossible’.

Many  of  our  children’s  lives  are  broken  because  no  one believes  in  them.  Because  through  situations  of  violence, poverty, and lack of opportunity, their dreams are crushed. The world tells them that it is impos-sible.  And  the  world  of  the  impossible  is made  up  more  often  than  not,  of  you and me. If  you want  to,  you  can  change  that now by giving something  to  this cause which surely must be one of the noblest of all. Wasn’t  it Christ who  said;  ‘what  you  do  to and for the least of these little ones, you do unto me’
