Homework in other subjects will still be given. Subjects on the extended home learning task timetable will not be

issuing any additional work to be completed at home.

Independent Learning Tasks Student introduction This booklet contains details of the extended learning tasks that you will be expected to complete this term. Over the year you will receive at least one task from each subject. The aim of these tasks is to help you become better learners. It will help you learn how to manage your time, complete research, develop your ideas and meet deadlines. These are skills that very important at later stages in your school life and when you move to further study or work. As well as the information contained in this booklet you will be given additional information from your teachers. You can also seek help from them at any stage in the project. You will not succeed if you leave these tasks until the last minute. You should allocate at least 20 minutes per week to each task. Your teachers will often have check points to ensure that you are on task, don’t be caught out!

Assignment/ Project/Activity Be careful when you are working online or using the internet for leisure. Watch out for suspicious emails and websites, and people claiming to be someone or something they aren’t. You need to research E-safety and how to protect yourself using technology in this modern age. What you hand in: At the end of the four weeks you need to hand in a booklet covering 4 different aspects of staying safe while online. The four aspects you need to research are:

1) The internet: You can cover: Personal information, Status updates/comments and photos, false information

2) Spam email and phishing: You need to describe what each one is and explain how to give tips to not fall victim to phishing

3) Malware and Firewalls: Describe what Malware is and how firewalls can help you stay safe.

4) Filesharing, cyberbullying and smartphones: Describe what each one is and how to ensure that you are safe using all three technologies.

Stepping stones I can use to succeed in this task:

1. Set aside one week for each research topic. 2. There are already lots of guidance on here:

http://www.branstonca.lincs.sch.uk/page/cms/160/e-safety@bca 3. No more than one A4 side per research topic. 4. Use text and images to make the booklet interesting. 5. DO NOT copy and paste information. 6. If you haven’t got internet access use one of the ICT suites open at lunchtimes

Assignment/ Project/Activity

You will use your own knowledge, the Periodic Table and your own research to describe some atoms, elements and compounds.

You can produce information cards or a leaflet containing information about the structure of an atom and the different charges on each particle.

You will research isotopes and explain what they are. Your work will also compare atoms, elements and compounds.

What you hand in: Information cards/leaflet supported by diagrams. You may wish to make a model of the atom to show the arrangement of particles but this is not essential.

Stepping stones I can use to succeed in this task: Use the level ladder to:

describe the structure of an atom compare elements compounds and mixtures describe what an isotope is

Teachers have a range of resources to provide access and challenge at the right level for you. Please ask if you think your task is too easy or too difficult!

Assignment/ Project/Activity Some students were watching an ice cube in a beaker as it slowly melted.

They were wondering why it melts. When they inspected the beaker the next lesson, the water was gone.

What you hand in: Draw a poster that explains why an ice cube melts when left out of the

freezer and what happens to the water when it is left in a beaker for a while. Use a particle model to help explain your ideas.

Stepping stones I can use to succeed in this task:

Research the science behind changes of state, particularly solid to liquid Research the particle models used to explain changes of state Start by drawing key diagrams from your research Between these diagrams, write a detailed description of what the diagrams are

showing Teachers have a range of resources to provide access and challenge at the right level for you. Please ask if you think your task is too easy or too difficult!

Stepping stones I can use to succeed in this task:

You could use the following resources to collect ideas: internet, recipe books, magazines, cookery programmes, supermarkets etc

Independent Learning Extended Homework

Start Date: March 2017

Deadline: March 2017

(4 weeks)

Time Allocation 1-1½ hours

You will certainly have to be an “Independent Enquirer” and quite possibly a “Creative Thinker” !

You will also be a “Self-Manager”.

If you collaborate with someone else, you will be a “Team Worker” and an

“Effective Participator”.

You will also be an “Effective Participator” if you are asked to feed your ideas back later.

When the task is completed, you will be asked to think back over the entire process;

this will enable you to be a “Reflective Learner”.

Assignment/ Project/Activity You are asked to research a topic on life in France/The French-Speaking World. The choice of topic is very much up to you and your own interests : It might, for example be about a famous French-speaking person ; or maybe a football team in the French-speaking world. Or what about a French-speaking (singing?!) pop-star or something about how schools in a part of the French-Speaking World are different to yours? You will need to think carefully about your topic choice ---- make it something which interests you and for which you will find it easy to research information. What you hand in: A piece of written work as a minimum. This could be supplemented (e.g.) pictures, PowerPoint, etc. ( just remember that part of this is to do with sticking to the time limit of 2 hours ! )

Stepping stones which I can use to help me succeed in this task: Listen carefully, when your teacher launches the task to your class Ask your teacher for any background ideas they may have Ask a native speaker Look on the Internet Go to the Library Ask at home N.B. No copying + pasting, please !!

Assignment/ Project/Activity In your lessons you have been studying different forms of life writing – from Bill Bryson’s travel writing, Roald Dahl’s autobiography and Frank McCourt’s memoirs. You have also been looking at language features to make your writing more exciting. You are going to produce a piece of travel writing that documents your own exciting travel experiences. This can be anything – from a camping trip in Wales, to a trip to Turkey or America! It should include the actual act of travel, as well as what happened when you arrived. You need to:

Write between 350-400 words and type this up. Redraft your work to check for mistakes, such as punctuation and paragraphing. Use a selection of language features to enhance your writing. Use photographs, diagrams and illustrations to make your work more attractive.

What you hand in: Your typed work on A4 paper, which includes photographs, diagrams or illustrations to make your work more interesting for a reader. Highlight at least THREE language features, draw an arrow, and explain what they are, and why you used them.

Stepping stones I can use to succeed in this task: Find other examples of fun travel writing that show you how it’s done. Good examples

to look for are Bill Bryson and Michael Palin. Go back through the examples of language features and travel writing that you have

studied in lessons. You should be using language features to enhance your writing. Look at the level examples on the Branston Website – Remote Access / Students /

Get Homework Here / Year 7 Life Writing to give you an idea of what level you are writing at.

Use at least three language features studied Read through and redraft (improve) your work to check for errors and make it more

interesting for the reader. Ask parent / guardian to read through your work and give you one suggestion on how

to improve it. If you’re struggling to complete this task, see your teacher for some help and guidance. Finally, remember to spread this task over 3 weeks and not leave it until the last

minute!
