Aims & Outcomes:
• Aims: To understand the packaging development process.
• To find out about how graphics are applied to packaging and used to entice and encourage the customer to purchase.
• To develop ideas for creative solutions in packaging design.
• Outcomes:
• Bronze: Begin to develop 3D packaging design ideas on paper (colour) and relate this to your design intentions.
• Silver: Explore net design and map out 3D ideas in a 2D example. Analyse the success of your ideas.
• Gold: Begin to develop net designs using accurate paper, then digital environment.

Design Task 11:
• Once you have developed promotional materials, the next step is to:
• Carry out further research into packaging materials relevant to your theme.
• Explore packaging sustainability.
• Develop and plan design ideas on paper before you go into the digital environment.
• Develop your ideas experimentally in the digital environment, noting your findings from you use of net layout, elements and design principles, using screen shots.
• Develop your final promotional net, graphics, and maquetteideas in Photoshop, Illustrator, & InDesign.
• Keep a journal of everything you do.
• Check that you are achieving the assessment criteria at regular intervals.

Develop skills in
• Drawing in 3D
• Designing in 3D
• Creating net designs
• Developing accurate digital nets

Produce• Research:
• Which supports your intentions
• Planning:
• Extensive paper based planning, including, 3D designs, nets, graphics positioning on nets. Box, bottle, tin, packet, etc.
• Development:
• Digitised versions of your nets which are accurate in mm.
• Maquette blanks which explore the construction of your packaging.
• Maquettes which explore the application of graphics.
• Final maquettes which include all graphics and work as containers for your product - Box, bottle, tin, packet, etc.
• Analysis:
• Use your journal, sketchbook and screen prints to record the developmental process
• Peer feedback
• Overall reflection and evaluation.

Remember:
• In packaging design communication between the producer and the consumer is a vital factor that must not be overlooked.
• Most consumers will purchase a product because of the visual language present on the pack rather than because of advertising.
• Packaging provides the designer with a unique challenge not only to protect and preserve, but also to present quality design that functions in both 2D & 3D environments.
• Surface graphics must function equally well on each side of the package, every panel communicating the brand.
