BRAMHOPE & CARLTON VILLAGE NEWSLETTER

SUMMER 2017

Welcome to the Summer edition of the Bramhope & Carlton Parish Council Newsletter.

Bramhope is an extraordinarily vibrant community. The pages of this newsletter include reports on the Summer Festival, and on the exceptional range of activities mounted by a wide range of organisations.

There is more to come. The Bramhope Show is on Sunday 10th September so do come along and enjoy what is always a fantastic afternoon. The Village Hall, clubs and societies have planned their Autumn programmes and you can get a taste in these pages. The planning extends to Christmas with a celebratory switch-on of the Christmas lights on 25th November!

None of these events would take place without an enormous amount of planning and hard work by volunteers. I would like to thank everyone who has given their time and skills. Volunteers are always needed so see if you can fill some of the roles suggested in these articles.

Your Parish Council represents you on matters of significant concern to the community: road safety; crime and liaison with the police; housing developments; protection of the Green Belt to name only a few. Council meetings are open to the public and, as the article on Page 3 highlights, we hope to see more of you there.

SITE ALLOCATIONS PLAN AND THE GREEN BELT REVIEW

The ‘examination in public’ of the Leeds Site Allocations Plan (SAP) will take place in the autumn. Comments previously made by Bramhope residents and the parish council concerning the SAP will be taken into consideration by the planning inspectors as part of the examination process. A review of green belt boundaries is also taking place in conjunction with the SAP. The city council are proposing to remove land from the green belt at three locations in Bramhope. Once this land is removed from the green belt it will become available for housing. The three sites in Bramhope are Green Acres, Moor Road (42 dwellings), land to the rear of 45 Creskeld Lane (23 dwellings) and the field to the south of Spring Wood (part of the Miller Homes site) where the northern part of the field could be used for a new primary school or for further housing.

The parish council has asked a planning consultant to apply the City Council’s own Green Belt Review Methodology to the three sites concerned. The consultant believes that the removal of the Moor Road site and the field to the south of Spring Wood from the green belt should be challenged. Whilst there can be no guarantee of success the parish council has instructed the consultant to gather evidence which will support the retention of the two sites within green belt. This evidence will be presented at the examination in public.

MILLER HOMES SITE

Miller Homes have instructed Leeds City Council’s Highway engineers to undertake preliminary design work on the site access. Various trial holes have been dug by the A660 to investigate the position of gas pipes, electricity cables and other utilities. Highway works are not expected to take place until early 2018. Work on the housing development will not start until after the access is completed, possibly in late 2018.

West Yorkshire Archaeological Services are undertaking a survey of the site as the fields are believed to contain evidence of activity from the Romano-British period. Other surveys and management plans for the site, e.g. for bat roosting and bird nesting, are also required before any development takes place.

The parish council has made extensive comments on the detailed plans submitted by Millers. In summary the parish council would like the design of all the houses around the edges of the site to be sympathetic in character to those in the adjacent Conservation Area, with extensive tree, shrub and hedge planting around the site boundaries and further planting within the site. A traffic scheme to eliminate rat running on roads such as The Poplars should be completed during the construction of the site access.

Further details of the parish council’s comments and all other comments can be viewed on Leeds City Council’s Planning website via Public Access using application reference number 17/02312/RM. Based on comments made by various city council departments, e.g. Highways, various issues will need to be solved before approval will be given. The planners will consider the proposals and comments over the summer period. It is possible that Miller’s proposals will be sent to a plans panel of councillors in early September of this year.

Review of the Leeds Housing Target – too late

LCC has undertaken a Strategic Housing Market assessment that suggests the original figure of 70,000 homes by 2033 should be revised downwards to 55,000. Even if this lower figure is adopted, it is too late to prevent the Miller Homes development. Planning permission was given following an appeal and cannot be reversed.

PROPOSED SALE OF LAND AT GURNAL FLATS AND OFF HARROGATE ROAD

A proposal has been made to the Parish Council by the current tenants to purchase the pasture at Gurnal Flats, off Occupation Lane. A proposal has also been received to purchase the field off Harrogate Road adjacent to the lay-by. Both fields are owned by the village. Income from them is minimal. The Parish Council are empowered to sell this land, subject to meeting financial and legal requirements, and are minded to do so. The land is in the Green Belt and does not appear on the proposed Site Allocations Plan. Nevertheless, a claw back clause would form part of any contract of sale to ensure the village benefitted from any development in the next 20 years. Residents must be advised of any sale of village assets, and notices will be posted on the website and the notice boards. If you have questions or views on the matter, please contact the Parish Clerk.

HAVE YOUR SAY AT PARISH COUNCIL MEETINGS

There appears to be a misconception that Parish Council meetings are held in secret! A recent comment on social media said that the Police attend meetings in Bramhope to which residents are not invited. Nothing could be further from the truth. Parish Council meetings are open to the public (though sadly it is rare to see more than one person, and sometimes there are no observers).

The social media comment triggered a discussion as to how the Parish Council can engage the public in their meetings. The Parish Council’s Standing Orders already state that there should be a 10 minute slot at the start of every meeting allocated to members of the public who wish to comment or ask questions. This has now been formalised as the permanent second item on the agenda. (Unless invited by the Chair, members of the public may not speak during the rest of the meeting.) We are also going to put more effort into social media. (We have a website, a Facebook page and a Twitter account, but access levels are disappointing.)

Meetings are held on the fourth Wednesday of every month at 7.30 pm, upstairs at Bramhope Village Hall. The Agenda for the meetings is published in advance on the Parish Council website and the village notice boards. It will now also be published on the Council’s Facebook page.

So please come along and have your say if there is an issue that is causing concern. Wherever possible the Council will try to help. If the matter is something which isn’t our responsibility and over which we have no control, we will try to point you to someone who can assist. Or just come to see how we operate, learn about village matters, and enjoy tea and biscuits and a chat when we break during proceedings!

We look forward to meeting you.

Councillor Hilary Harris (Vice-Chair of the Parish Council)

Following a concerning increase in burglary offences in Bramhope over the past few months two men have been arrested, charged and remanded in prison for numerous offences and are awaiting trial at Crown Court. This has had a positive impact on crime figures for our Ward.

Due to this increase in crime the Police have spent over £1500 in funding on offering upgraded locks on homes across the Ward. There is currently no funding left but if any more money is secured, it will be made available again. The money spent to date will hopefully lead to safer, more secure homes in our area.

There have been increased patrols by Police Community Support Officers over the past two months following complaints of damage and anti-social behaviour around the village. Several young people were identified and spoken with regards their behaviour and this has seen a reduction in reported incidents.

Parking complaints around Bramhope have been looked at in liaison with Highways and local Councillors, locations include the Tredgolds and outside the Primary School. This is still ongoing work at this time.

(The Neighbourhood Police team attend the monthly Parish Council meeting to discuss crime and road safety. Useful advice is regularly issued by the West Yorkshire Police on crime prevention. Key items are placed on the village website, but for the latest news and updates go to the website - http://www.westyorkshire.police.uk/leeds/outer-north-west.

Residents are urged to use the 101 number or the online chat feature on the website to report suspicious incidents.

If anyone is interested in setting up a Neighbourhood Watch scheme, contact PC Ingham in the first instance.)

ROAD SAFETY

There has rightly been much discussion in the local press on speeding and road safety measures following the tragic accident at the Bar House. Road safety is a major focus for the Parish Council. Concerns raised by residents and identified by the Parish Council are discussed with the police and representations made, through our Ward Councillor, Billy Flynn, to Leeds City Council Highways Department (who are responsible for the roads.)

In the last 12 months the 20 mph zone for Bramhope Village has been established with speed bumps on Breary Lane and at the Cross to emphasise the restrictions and limit speeds. The Parish Council has purchased a Speed Indicator Device (SID) for erection on Kings Road, though supply issues mean that installation is likely to be October rather than the original date of July. A further SID for Moor Road is in the 2017/18 budget. Additional yellow lines address known sight line issues. LCC have also committed to a 30 mph zone through East Carlton village later this year.

In recent months there have been a series of accidents on the bend in the A660 opposite St Giles Church with at least 3 instances of cars leaving the road and demolishing walls. Following the latest accident in June, the PC asked LCC Highways to act urgently. The statement issued by Highways in July, explaining why it was not feasible to reduce the 40 mph limit on the A660 to 30 mph, acknowledges that there is a problem at this bend and commits to investigation and remedial work this summer. Temporary skid risk signs have been sited on the pavement. The Parish Council will continue to monitor the situation. A further blackspot at the junction of Occupation Lane and Old Lane reported to LCC has already been addressed with an anti-skid surface.

BUSES THEN AND NOW

X84 Proposed Changes

First Bus held a series of consultation meetings in July about proposed route changes to the X84 to be implemented in October that should improve the service. Timings would be extended as the current timings are too tight with delays having a knock on effect that mean that buses are taken out of service mid-journey. An extra bus and driver would be added to the roster. The last bus from Leeds retimed to leave at 23.35 instead of 23.15. In the period when there is a bus every 20 minutes, the bus that only goes as far as Otley will go via Pool and arrive 5 minutes later. The Parish Council attended a consultation meeting and pressed First Bus on changes to driver rosters to prevent exceeding statutory hours and taking a bus out of service.

LEDGARD BUSES - 50 YEARS ON

The Samuel Ledgard Bus Company is an integral part of Bramhope's history. The distinctive blue and ivory buses first ran on the Leeds-Bramhope-Otley route in 1924, continuing until the company closed in 1967.

Sam Ledgard was an Armley based entrepreneur who in 1912 bought a petrol engine charabanc for day trips to Blackpool. After the First World War he moved into scheduled bus services and created an empire that embraced all the major routes from Leeds to Otley, Ilkley, Pudsey, Horsforth, Bradford and Harrogate as well as local services in Yeadon, Rawdon and Otley. Ledgard's

was regarded affectionately by the public, in part because of the extraordinary range of second hand buses that were used, but mainly because of the company's reputation for exceptional service.

In October it will be fifty years since the blue buses disappeared from the route. The Samuel Ledgard Society http://www.samuelledgardsociety.org.uk/ has asked First Bus to paint a bus in Ledgard livery to mark the occasion. (There is already a bus in the red and custard livery of the rival West Yorkshire Road Car Co.). This has been rejected, so they appeal to residents to write to the First Bus MD, Giles Fearnley.

(I must reveal an interest. As a student I worked as a bus conductor for Ledgard on the Bramhope route!)

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE AT THE BRAMHOPE SUMMER FESTIVAL

Bramhope showed just how many events are put on in the village and the number of volunteers who give their time and effort to make these happen. Not only at Festival time but throughout the year many people work tirelessly and often without credit to make the village such a lovely and vibrant place to live. You'll see more photos and mentions of the events throughout the newsletter.

This year's Festival was built around events already planned at the Village Hall and by the Churches and the British Legion, then supplemented with other events specially organised by the Festival Committee. 13 events in all! For the first time a Mini Breeze was included and over 200 people turned out to enjoy a free and fun family event on a beautiful sunny day. (Thanks to Councillor Billy Flynn for obtaining funding for this event.)

Most of the Festival events were an opportunity to raise money for the Parish Council’s adopted charity for 2017/18, Marie Curie. The amount collected of £385.38 illustrates the generosity of the people of Bramhope. Many thanks to all who contributed. The Parish Council are delighted to have had the opportunity to use the various events to help Marie Curie in this way. If anyone intends holding an event in the future and would like to help raise funds then please contact Hilary Harris, Charity Liaison Officer for the Parish Council

Councillor Hilary Harris, Festival Committee Chair

AIRPORT RELIEF ROAD – Change of timetable for consultation

Three routes were put forward for public consultation in November 2015. Leeds City Council were going to announce the preferred route in 2016, then produce a detailed scheme and business case. LCC is now modelling detailed traffic flows for all three routes and connecting roads and will present detailed plans for routes A, B and C for public consultation, probably in Summer 2018. The West Yorkshire Combined Authority business viability case is now planned for completion by April 2019. The park and ride railway station on the Harrogate / Leeds line, now part of Leeds' Transport Strategy, will be integrated in to the plans.

AIR SPACE CHANGE PROPOSALS FOR LEEDS/BRADFORD AIRPORT

Leeds/Bradford Airport is proposing changes to the routes that aircraft take departing and arriving from the airport. The changes should reduce emissions and noise for most residents in the region. A small number of dwellings (none of the named post codes are in Bramhope or Carlton) will suffer increased noise. A public consultation has been opened. Responses by Friday 6th October. The Parish Council will be submitting a formal response. Details are here http://www.leedsbradfordairport.co.uk/about-the-airport/airspace-change-proposal-consultation

BRAMHOPE IN BLOOM – "Busy Bees"

With the longer days and brighter weather of Spring and early Summer, Bramhope-in-Bloom volunteers are busier than ever and you have hopefully spotted us buzzing around the village in our distinctive 'hi-vis’ plumage. Do stop and say hello, we are very friendly!

Following an April visit from the Yorkshire-in-Bloom judges we were delighted with our Gold medal but what really puts a smile on our faces and keeps us motivated are all the kind and appreciative comments we receive from so many of you in and around the village.

It was fantastic that so many people turned out for the litter-pick prior to Summer judging. Over 20 bags of litter were collected helping Bramhope to look its best when the judges visited on 7th July.

We continue to plan ahead (our Autumn/Winter bedding has already been ordered) whilst also enjoying the current season. The weather has been reasonably kind with a traditional British mix of sunshine and showers helping our summer beds and barrels to bloom.

Some of the volunteers still smiling after covering an area from the Dyneley Arms to Golden Acre Park and Old Lane via Occupation Lane to Moor Road!

You may also have noticed the new stone trough recently installed and adding a splash of colour to Church Hill

We are always on the look-out for new volunteers and if you are able to lend a hand please do get in touch with Janet Hobson on 07919 087745; email [email protected]. You will be made very welcome and even if you can only spare an hour or so it really does make a difference to our work. (We particularly need volunteers to assist with watering at The Cross and the containers. Please get in touch.)

Lisa Youngman, Volunteer, Bramhope in Bloom.

MARIE CURIE NORTH LEEDS FUNDRAISING GROUP

On behalf of Marie Curie and all the people they help, we'd like to say a big thank you to the people of Bramhope and the surrounding areas who attended any of the events during the Summer Festival and who gave so generously to Marie Curie. The total of £385.38 is absolutely fantastic. It was lovely for our group of volunteers to attend the events and to chat to you all.

Thank you once again Bramhope & Carlton Parish Council for choosing us as your charity this year, with a special mention to Councillor Hilary Harris for being a constant support throughout.

Our next event is on 11th November at The Grove Church, Horsforth to celebrate what would have been Marie Curie's 150th birthday.

For more information contact Linda Breckill (Chair) 07941 243347 or Lesley Hodgkinson (Secretary) 07979 236576

Thank you to everyone who supported our Vintage Afternoon Tea on Saturday 24th June. We served 51 teas and raised over £400 for the Village Hall. The feedback following the event has been brilliant; we are very pleased that everyone enjoyed the afternoon and the sandwiches, scones and cakes provided.

We have had a packed programme so far with highlights including: Etiquette Advice from the UK expert William Hanson and Style Advice from Harry Purewal with a little tap dancing instruction with Vikki Paris. In addition to the main meetings we have had 6 trips to the Theatre, 4 meals out and visits to both Harwood House, to see the Victoria Exhibition and Farnley Hall, to see the Turner Paintings. Not forgetting the Weekend Walking Group, our newly formed Mid-week Walking Group and Book Group which all meet on a regular basis.

The delights in store for the rest of the year include: learning about and sampling the World’s most expensive perfume and at the other end of the scale hearing about food waste from the Junk Food Project.

We are visiting Christmas at Kew to see the fantastic Christmas Lights in the Gardens as well as managing to build in some retail therapy in London and we are booked to see the World Premiere of the Fat Friends Musical.

We are a very friendly group that encourages and welcomes new members and visitors. We meet on the first Thursday of the month from 7.15pm at St Giles Church Hall. We are led by our members and the meeting programme and other activities are based on our member’s suggestions and interests.

Look at our website to find out more about our programme and activities www.bramhopewi.org.uk. To get in touch, email – [email protected] , telephone or text 07821 330953

A message from Janice, Vicar of St. Giles

Marriage is very much on my mind at the moment with one daughter married here at St Giles this Summer and another marrying next year. It is always a delight to marry couples in St Giles, to get to know them and their families before the big day. You will find our wedding leaflet in the lobby which answers some of the questions that you may need to consider if you want a church wedding here in Bramhope. Alternatively, our web site has the same information www.stgilesbramhope.org.uk.

Take a look at our website where there are details of our services; what to do if you want a baptism, a wedding, lots of pictures of social and other events that have taken place over the years. Above you can see some pictures from the "Call My Bluff" Cheese & Wine Evening social we had in July.

We are holding a special service after the Summer Break on 10 September – ‘The Blessing of the Backpacks’ which will celebrate the ‘new’ year as new schools and new horizons beckon for so many of us.

Messy Church is back! Our first one after the summer is on Sunday 17 September, 3-5 pm. Did you know that we now also have children’s activities in the hall during our Sunday Service at 9.30 am on the 4th Sunday of the Month?

This year our Alpha course is being replaced with a Confirmation Course - for those who want to find out more about the Christian faith. The course starts in the autumn and Alpha will run again in 2018. Anyone from the age of 10+ can be confirmed - you’re never too old and we regularly have adults as well as children attending our course.

Our harvest celebrations in October continue as ever with our Harvest Service on 8 October, with a three course lunch which you are warmly invited to stay for afterwards. We will be collecting food this year at harvest time for a food bank which distributes to those in need in East and South Leeds.

We will be holding another of our ‘In Loving Memory’ services in early November where we come together to remember loved ones no longer with us.

awarded The Duke of York's Community Initiative Award

OPAL is a voluntary organisation for those over 60 years old living in LS16 that works to reduce isolation for older people and ensure that they can live safely, healthily and confidently in their own home. In Bramhope OPAL works in partnership with

the Methodist Church through the Thursday afternoon Meeting Point.

In April 2017 representatives of OPAL attended Buckingham Palace to be presented with the prestigious Duke of York's Community Initiative Award given to community groups in Yorkshire that make a special contribution.

ROYAL BRITISH LEGION – BRAMHOPE BRANCH

The Royal British Legion provides lifelong support for the Royal Navy, British Army, Royal Air Force, Reservists, veterans, and their families.

Our main fund raising vehicle is the Poppy Appeal. We need volunteers to take part in this year's poppy selling activities as we approach Armistice Day on 11 November. If you would

like to help, please contact the branch secretary on 0113 284 2548.

The Brass Band Concert at West Park Rugby Club was very successful. The Harrogate Brass Band played to a full house and £500 was raised.

The Branch has commissioned the reprinting of two books by the late Treasurer, Brian Norfolk, that make a unique contribution to the history of the village. Bramhope's War Memorials tells the story of those who served in the First and Second World Wars, and died for posterity, based on detailed research, including visits to war graves in France and Belgium. The Shire Horses of Bramhope tells the story of the Shire Horse Stud Farm at Bunny Hall, Moor Road. Before WW1 this was the most famous stud in the country, gaining many honours at major shows across Britain and overseas. Copies will be available at the Bramhope Show or from John Broadley on 0113 267 3721. Donation of (at least) £5 per book. Proceeds to the RBL Poppy Appeal 2017

FILM CLUB

Hello, all film goers!! The place is the same. (Methodist Church Hall) The time of 7.15 p.m. is the same on the first Tuesday of the month with a warm welcome and refreshment as always. The only difference is the films to be shown.

We begin on Tuesday 3rd October with a quick AGM, followed by The Man who knew Infinity. Set in India and Cambridge at the beginning of the 20th century it tells the true story of a young man with a remarkable understanding and ability to solve complex

mathematical problems. This is followed in November by Lion, again based on a true story of an Indian boy. He was adopted and brought up in Australia and returned to India as an adult to discover his birth family.

The December film is United Kingdom. In 1947 a London office girl meets and marries, despite opposition in both Britain and Africa, a Bechuanaland prince who is studying law at Oxford. They relocate to Africa and the story unfolds.

Films to be shown in 2018 in month order are Allied, Hidden Figures, Viceroy House and Florence Foster Jenkins.

Existing members will receive an invitation to renew their subscription in August. Please don’t delay too long if you wish to renew as we always have a waiting list. The cost for 7 films is unchanged at £20 and for 5 films £17. Surely good value! Visitors are welcome for individual films at a charge of £4 and we usually have space to accommodate them. We look forward to seeing you.

BRAMHOPE BOWLS CLUB

The club is having a very successful season with all three league teams around the top of their respective leagues. Friendly matches also form part of the activities together with in-house tournaments and competitions. There are many social events throughout the season including a day trip to play at Skipton and a short bowling

holiday in September at Scarborough. The Club is always looking to welcome new members with or without previous bowling experience. It is great fun both on and off the green. Call in at any time (the green is beside the Village Hall) or contact Bryan Curtis (0113 261 0339) or Stewart Sunman (0113 203 7447). We’ll also be at the Bramhope Show if you want to test your skills, so please remember to pack your flat-soled shoes!

£4,500 RAISED AT THE BPS SCARECROW HUNT AND SUMMER FESTIVAL!

Thank you so much for your Sponsorship and Support of the 2017 Bramhope Primary School Scarecrow Hunt & Summer Festival. BPS PTA would like to thank everyone in the village who got involved this year – it was great to see so many village businesses and people getting involved.

We raised over £4,500 profit towards the ‘Great Bramhope Primary School Library Project’. This money will go towards the updating of our library spaces in both our KS1 and KS2 library areas. Our aim is to get every child engaged in reading at an early age through inspirational spaces and titles. The children of Bramhope Primary School will benefit from your generosity for years to come!

We had 47 scarecrows in this year’s hunt dotted all around the village and the winner was ‘Stick Man’. The Summer Festival held on the school field included live bands, food & drink and other traditional stalls and games for the whole family. A great afternoon of fun was had by all.

Date for the Diary: Next year’s Summer Festival & Scarecrow Hunt will be held on Saturday 30th June 2018. In the meantime, if you’d like to get in touch with us, please contact us on [email protected].

BRAMHOPE PRIMARY SCHOOL

In response to concerns expressed by parents, a Road Safety Group has been established to take measures to improve the safety for all our children entering and leaving the school grounds.

The 'Bramhope Striders’ walking bus scheme has been set up. 20 parents are already interested in signing up! We encourage any children who can to use the walking bus rather than being dropped off in the school car parks. We do not recommend use of the car park as a drop off area.

The crossing point nearest the Medical Centre Car Park has been identified as an unsafe way to enter the school. From September the school would encourages all pupils and parents to enter the front school gates when coming from the Tredgold Crescent entrance, and not to walk up the road leading to the Medical Centre. Parents and pupils can walk safely across the playground, in front of the school office and past the ok club entrance to enter KS1 playground.

Cones are being used outside the school entrances to ensure that there is a safe area for parents and pupils to cross. Most parents have kept these areas clear and this has really helped at busy times. .However, there are still parents who ignore the cones and park adjacent to the yellow 'keep clear – school' markings. Please do not park on the yellow ‘keep clear’ zig zag lines, or adjacent to them. This is crucial for the safety of the children.

The Neighbourhood Community Policing Team will be there at the start of next term to help with parking issues

Rachel Colbourn Head of Bramhope Primary School

It is with immense pride that we are writing today, to share our success over the last year. In 2017, we have made yet more awards to support the education and development of children and young people in Bramhope through grants to a range of youth and sports groups (including Rugby, Football, Tennis, Scouting and Guiding Associations), as we recognize their potential to unlock the talent of the young.

In 2016-17 we awarded over 100 individual grants for anything from Tree Felling Courses to Educational Trips, for specialist equipment and for attendance at local, national and international sporting competitions and events.

Bramhope’s youth talent was evident at our AGM where we heard what a difference the grants had made in supporting life-altering experiences and opportunities. (The award winners at the AGM are pictured.)

As well as grants, we support the voices and opinions of children and young people within our community by listening to their suggestions and championing their ideas either ourselves or through the relevant agencies.

All in all, we have had an amazing year and if you want more information, would like to apply for a grant or have a suggestion on how the village could develop to support our youth, both now or in the future, then contact us at http://www.bydt.org.uk

Recently, we have identified that our website could do with a little updating and we are struggling with this skill base within our existing volunteers. If you think you could help with this, we would love to hear from you. Please email us on [email protected].

Are you aged between 10 and 18? (or do you know someone in Bramhope who is?)

Do you have a hobby, pastime or trip for which you’d like funding?

Then please apply to Bramhope Youth Development Trust at http://www.bydt.org.uk

Funds are available and we want to spend them on you!

BRAMHOPE BEAVERS

Bramhope Beavers have had a busy Summer term! Making the most of the light summer evenings, we have worked on skills for various badges which have found the pack playing rugby, walking and exploring around Yeadon Tarn and making Mr Men for the BPS scarecrow hunt.

We enjoyed a visit from the local PCSO who talked about her role and the boys and girls even had the chance to be locked up in a Police van! A once in a life time experience which they thoroughly enjoyed.

The highlight of the Beaver calendar bringing the year to a close was Challenge17. An overnight camp in Bramham Park where the pack were able to

climb, jump, zip wire, slide, Zumba, take part in a silent disco and enjoy the open cinema whilst eating popcorn. A fabulous time was definitely had by all!

Liz Clarke, Mandy Dalby and Alison Hanakin Bramhope Beaver Leaders

2nd Bramhope One of our main activies this term has been our pack holiday where everyone went to Survival School. Josh from Pennine Bushcraft http://www.penninebushcraft.com/ taught everyone about survival skills where the Brownies had to make a shelter, build a fire and keep it going long enough to hard boil an egg. The Brownies all worked very hard at keeping the fire going and luckily we had no runny yolks!

We say a massive thankyou and goodbye to Vicki, who has been a leader for the last couple of years. Luckily, we also welcome two new leaders to our pack; Clare Endeacott and Sandra Moore.

Whilst we are currently at capacity, if you wish your daughter to be added to the waiting list please contact the leadership team [email protected] or online at http://www.girlguiding.org.uk/home.aspx.

Sue Rugg, Lisa Lendill, Eva Lavery , Clare Endeacott and Sandra Moore

We took many of our Pre School children to St Leonard’s farm, Esholt at the beginning of the Spring term. They learnt about farm life and got to hold and touch some of the animals. We were very lucky to have a very special visit from a policeman in July! He even brought his police car for the children to explore!

Team Bramhope: L to R Andy Hogan, Alison Leonard, Andy Taylor, Caroline Dixon, Owen Tonge ran in the Leeds Half Marathon on 14th May. Not only did they finish in very good times but they raised £2009 for the two cancer charities we support: The Candlelighters Trust and the Imran Khan Cancer Appeal.

BRAMHOPE SHOW 2017 – SUNDAY 10th SEPTEMBER 1.30 – 4.30 pm

Make a date in your diary! We had a fantastic day last year, the best in recent years for visitors, exhibitors and stalls. The show is going from strength to strength, so don't miss this superb event.

Your Village Show Programme should have come through the letter box by now. If not, pick one up from the local shops. We encourage everyone to enter one or more classes. If you have never entered, give it a go, you never know your entry could be in the prizes! (The programme cover by Isabelle Corke was chosen from the many colourful designs created by the children at Bramhope Primary School. Thank you to them all. The children also made the fantastic scarecrow displays you will find around the Showground).

Refreshments will be available throughout the afternoon, including afternoon teas (in the main hall) and outside in the Food Court: BBQ, Ice-Cream, Bar, Cocktails, Soft Drinks and Sweets, plus our very popular homemade cake stall.

In the Fun Court, you will find tombola, beat the goalie, crazy golf, children’s stalls, face painting, and let’s not forget the Fancy Dress Parade at 1.45pm followed by our popular Pet Show plus many other side stalls.

Entertainment includes live music from Recycled and children’s entertainer Partymania.

A big thank you to our local businesses, our generous patrons, judges, cake bakers and all those people who volunteer their time to make the show a success. Especial thanks to Peter Wright, the Village Hall Manager for his hard work and support in setting up the show.

Whatever the weather on the day, we hope you will join us with your family and friends, the more the merrier, and make this another successful show, and enjoy a great afternoon out.

HALF-MARATHON, THREE PEAKS, THE QUIZ – PUTTING THE FUN IN FUNDRAISING

The third of our four annual charity fund raising events is on 20th August. This will be the fifth year of tackling the Yorkshire Three Peaks. The challenge is to complete the 25 mile long walk covering the three beautiful peaks in under 12 hours. We have 10 in the group already but if anyone would like to join us, please contact us as soon as possible. We will leave Bramhope to drive to the Dales at around 6.30 am. I am hoping that our group will do it in under 11 hours this year. I am also hoping for a dry day, as weather plays a big part in how much fun you have and how quickly you complete the challenge. Our target is to raise £1500 for the same two wonderful cancer charities.

If you can't take part in the walk, then please donate whatever amount you can to help us reach our target. Either pop into the shop or you can do it online at www.justgiving.com/teambramhope1.

The fourth and last charity event is the famous Pub Quiz at the Fox in November. This has become the busiest quiz night of the year and raises money for the Children in Need Appeal. It will be on the 2nd or 3rd Tuesday of the month, depending on the availability of our amazing Brownlee Brothers who always turn out in support.

Thank you for supporting us so generously to raise money for good causes. To get involved or sponsor someone, contact me on [email protected]; 0113 203 7859, 07747 020782 or call into the shop.

BRAMHOPE VILLAGE HALL

Many more of you have started using our lovely hall. It's been the venue for weddings, celebrations and children’s parties. Sporty Tots has been a huge success and will start again in the autumn. In May and June we hosted events as part of the Bramhope Summer Festival: the JayWalkers touring theatre company; the annual Adel Players murder mystery; the Jazz Cabaret night; and the WI held a sumptuous afternoon tea at the Hall, generously donating the surplus to Hall funds.

During August we'll be doing some sprucing up and in September the full programme of clubs and activities will be up and running. You may not know that we've added even more activities you can join: Yoga, Pilates, Toddler Sense, Rugby Tots, Zumba, Martial Arts. And here are some events for your diary

We have set up a Social Group to plan social events. (We are not a committee with all that entails and only meet infrequently so there is no big time commitment). If you'd like to join us then let me know.

We are looking for a new Treasurer to join the Trustees Management Committee, the Charity that runs the Hall, and help us streamline our financial processes. If you are interested please contact me to find out more.

(And finally, have you noticed how lovely the flowers are around the building and car park? Many thanks to Bramhope in Bloom who have done a wonderful job.)

BRAMHOPE ART CLUB

Exciting times! The new syllabus for 2017/18 has been published and there is something for everyone. Some of our happiest evenings are spent painting and drawing ideas and in mediums that we choose as individuals, and there is plenty of scope for that, but there are also demonstrations that will stretch our skill base. For example Paint like Turner and

Seascapes and Boats (wish I had been to that session before my trip to Filey).

Our first meeting will be on Monday 4th September at 7.30pm so do come along and join us. Whether you are an experienced painter, or you fancy just coming along to meet the members and see what we do, you can be assured of a warm welcome.

Please say hello to the members who will be displaying some of the club's work at the Bramhope Show on 10th September. They will be happy to answer any questions you have.

PARISH COUNCIL BRIEFING

New councillor

Richard Ellis has been co-opted to fill the vacancy left by the retirement of Denis Johnson. Born and raised in Bramhope, Richard is a director of a marketing company in Harrogate and will lend his expertise to our communications

Overhanging Vegetation

Residents are reminded that it is their responsibility to cut back overhanging trees and bushes that impede progress of people or vehicles on highways and public footpaths, or that obscure road signs. Leeds City Council can insist that this work is carried out.

Rosemont

Charterhouse Ltd have purchased the site. 9 apartments are proposed with no provision for social housing even though the Parish Council had pressed for this. The development size is below the level at which planning guidelines say social housing is viable for the developer. A planning application is to be submitted.

New Village Signs

New signs, made of stone, have been commissioned to replace the deteriorating wooden signs.

Mobile Library – under threat

Visits Bramhope on Tuesdays. Currently Fox & Hounds 11.15-13.00, Wynmore Avenue 14.15-16.15. LCC are proposing to reduce the hours because of low usage. The Parish Council has made suggestions to widen the appeal of this valuable service. But the message is clear Use it or Lose It!

Faster Broadband for The Trees / Kings Road / Leeds Road

Over 40 residents indicated their interest in a Community Fibre Partnership and the details were submitted to BT Openreach. BT has responded that no funding would be provided to support the scheme. It would have to be self-funding with residents each paying a share of the £25,000 cost. Since this area is scheduled to get faster broadband in 2019, and a CFP takes 15 months to implement, BT recommend that we do not proceed.

CARLTON VILLAGE REPORT

Leeds City Council has been in touch with me regarding the proposed 30 mph speed limit for Carlton Lane and Cemetery Road. The Parish Council has written to LCC Highways saying that the zone should cover the full length of Carlton Road and Cemetery Lane.

The defibrillator for the phone box will be installed on 8th August. An awareness session will be held during the first week of September.

A more detailed letter for Carlton residents on these and other topics is delivered with this newsletter.

If you have any other issues that you would like to discuss, please get in touch on 07739 013245 or [email protected].
