This letter, which is in fact a travelogue, and the very detailed sketch of the Acropolis show Delvaux’s great interest in antiquity, evident in so many of his paintings. Payró, the recipient of the letter, published an important article about Delvaux in the newspaper La Nación of 13 September 1925.

Printed in gothic letter, 38 lines, 3 columns in table, a2 with woodcut border and large decorative initial in contemporary hand colouring, b1 with woodcut border, 35 woodcuts from 20 blocks and numerous coats-of-arms, many with early hand-colouring, large woodcut printer’s device to recto of final leaf (laid down), mostly rubricated in red and blue, red initial strokes. Some ff. trimmed, occasionally affecting a border or sidenotes, a few small repairs, mostly marginal occasional staining or offsetting of hand-colouring.

A good copy in handsome 18th century speckled calf, covers bordered with a double and single dentelle gilt rule, (a few scratches) spine with gilt ruled raised bands, gilt ruled in compartments richly gilt, tan and black morocco labels gilt, skillful old reback, original spine laid down, inner dentelles gilt, all edges sprinkled red.

Les inscriptions sont dans une petite marge entre la composition et le cadre, ou bien un peu en dessous ou un peu au-dessus. Certaines planches présentent un 2e t.c. qui semble indiquer une coupure du cuivre non exécutée. La 3e planche (le lavement des pieds) est de Cripin de Passe (H.t.xiv, p. 144, n° 133). L’ordre des planches numérotées n’est pas toujours conforme au déroulement chronologique des événements.
