Introduction

The BPZ-20-360° shot blast machine runs on a Ford DSG-423 gasoline engine. For enclosedwork areas, the engine can be converted to run on liquid propane so as to help decrease the riskof carbon monoxide poisoning.

When in operation, the machine continuously recycles shot so that up to 4,500 square feet ofsurface area can be cut per hour while achieving a brush blast. To accomplish this feat, themachine first moves shot from the shot valve into the blast wheel. After being thrown by theblast wheel onto the surface below the machine, the shot and the debris then rebound up to thedust separator where the dust is automatically transferred to the dust collector. Next, the shotreturns to the shop hopper where it is once again passed through the machine. The BPZ-16-360°constantly recycles the shot from the time the clutch is engaged until the time when the machineis manually turned off by the operator. While the machine is in operation, the auto pulse dustcollector cleans all eight cartridge filters.

Safety Instructions

ALL OPERATORS AND MAINTENANCE PERSONNEL SHOULD READ THIS SECTIONCAREFULLY BEFORE OPERATING OR MAINTAINING THIS EQUIPMENT. THESESAFETY INSTRUCTIONS ARE NOT MEANT TO REPRESENT AN ALL INCLUSIVE LISTOF INSTANCES WHICH COULD OCCUR WHEN OPERATING THIS EQUIPMENT. FOR,AS WITH ANY PIECE OF CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT, SERIOUS INJURY CANOCCUR IF PROPER SAFETY PROCEDURES ARE NOT DILIGENTLY FOLLOWED. ALLSAFETY AND WARNING LABELS POSTED ON THE MACHINE MUST BE FOLLOWEDAS WELL AS THE SAFETY PROGRAM INSTITUTED BY YOUR COMPANY. THERE ISNO SUBSTITUTE FOR SOUND JUDGEMENT IN THE OPERATION ANDMAINTENANCE OF THIS EQUIPMENT. IN CASES WHERE OPERATING PERSONNELHAVE INSUFFICIENT KNOWLEDGE OR UNDERSTANDING OF THE ENGLISHLANGUAGE, PROPER TRANSLATED TRAINING MUST BE COMPLETED BEFORE USEOF THIS EQUIPMENT CAN TAKE PLACE.

Note: This manual must be kept with the machine at all times so as to allow the operatoreasy access to its vital information.

Safety — Site Assessment

Before starting blasting operations, a site assessment must be performed. During the siteassessment verify the following:

Work area is flat, clean, and dry, free of debris, frost-free, and has no flammable liquidsnearby. Also, make sure that the machine will be able to clear all obstructions. NEVERBLAST A WET FLOOR. NEVER BLAST OVER BOLTS, NUTS, SCREWS,NAILS, OR OTHER DEBRIS AS THIS MAY RESULT IN SIGNIFICANTDAMAGE TO THE MACHINE AND SERIOUS INJURY TO THE OPERATOR.

Work area is well ventilated. IF WORK AREA IS ENCLOSED OR PARTIALLYENCLOSED (WAREHOUSE, PARKING GARAGE, TUNNELS, ETC.), THENGASOLINE CAN NEVER BE USED AS THE FUEL SOURCE FOR THE BPZ-20-360° SHOT BLASTING MACHINE! This is because carbon monoxide, which is abyproduct all internal combustion engines, can be extremely hazardous when allowed toaccumulate in an area. An odorless, tasteless, and non-irritating gas, carbon monoxidecan quickly become lethal. As a result, liquid propane must be used in all instances whenthe work area is enclosed or partially enclosed. THE WORK AREA MUST STILL BEWELL VENTILATED, HOWEVER, AS LIQUID PROPANE ALSO RELEASESCARBON MONOXIDE. THIS MEANS THAT EXTREME CAUTION MUSTSTILL BE USED WHEN USING THIS FUEL SOURCE!

Each worker has a carbon monoxide monitor on their persons. These carbon monoxidemonitors should be calibrated, in working order, and should be equipped with audiblealarms that will warn workers if carbon monoxide levels become too high. IF CARBONMONOXIDE LEVELS EXCEED 35 PARTS PER MILLION, ALL WORK MUSTCEASE IMMEDIATELY! THIS REPRESENTS A POTENTIALLY DEADLYSITUATION WHICH NECESSITATES AN IMMEDIATE SHUTDOWN!

All workers have received training on the dangers of overexposure to carbon monoxide.Staff members must also be able to identify all of the signs and the symptoms associatedwith carbon monoxide poisoning. This training should ensure that work would stopimmediately and emergency medical personnel would be notified promptly if one ormore workers exhibited or complained of any of the common signs and symptomsassociated with carbon monoxide overexposure, including: headache, nausea, weakness, dizziness, lethargy, visual disturbances, changes in personality, and/or loss ofconsciousness.

All operators and other personnel within the work area have received training on properventilation procedures and on proper operation procedures for the engine and for othertypes of equipment.

FLOORS HAVE BEEN THOROUGLY INSPECTED. SOME FLOOR OR DECKSURFACES MAY BE COATED WITH OR CONTAMINATED BY DANGEROUSMATERIALS SUCH AS PCBs, LEAD, ASBESTOS, PESTICIDES, SOLVENTS,CLEANING FLUIDS, AND/OR OTHER HARMFUL CHEMICALS. THE DUSTPRODUCED FROM SHOT BLASTING SUCH SURFACES CAN CREATE ASERIOUS HEALTH THREAT TO THOSE WHO INHAIL OR COME INTOCONTACT WITH THE DUST. AS A RESULT, THE WORK AREA MUST BECHECKED FOR THESE MATERIALS BEFORE WORK CAN BEGIN.BLASTPRO MANUFACTURING, INC. DOES NOT WARRANT ITSEQUIPMENT TO BE SUITABLE FOR, OR APPROVED FOR, REMOVINGDANGEROUS MATERIALS. IT IS THEREFORE THE RESPONSIBILITY OFTHE CONTRACTOR TO AFFIRM THE SAFETY OF THE WORK AREA ANDTHE EQUIPMENT WITH THE PROPER AUTHORITIES. IT IS ALSO THERESPONSIBILITY OF THE CONTRACTOR TO WARN ALL STAFFMEMBERS OF ALL THE POTENTIAL SHORT-TERM AND LONG-TERMHEALTH RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH INHALING AND COMING INTOCONTACT WITH DANGEROUS MATERIALS. THE CONTRACTOR ISRESPONSIBLE, FURTHERMORE, FOR PROTECTING ALL WORKERSFROM BEING EXPOSED TO DANGEROUS MATERIALS. SO, BECAUSE THEBPZ-20-360° SHOT BLASTING MACHINE HAS NOT BEEN DESIGNED TOREMOVE, CLEAN, PROFILE, OR ALTER ANY SURFACE COATED WITH OROTHERWISE CONTAMINATED BY DANGEROUS MATERIALS, BLASTPROMANUFACTURING, INC. EXPRESSLY DISCLAIMS ANY LIABILITY FORINJURY, ILLNESS, DEATH, OR DAMAGE THAT MIGHT OCCUR ORRESULT FROM SUCH IMPROPER USE.

Operator and any other personnel in the work area are wearing safety glasses with sideshields, dust masks, ear plugs, hard hats, steel toed work boots, long sleeved shirts, tightfitting clothing, and gloves. It is also imperative for staff to tie back long hair and toremove all jewelry.

Page 6: BPZ-20-360° Table of Contents · SCHULZ COMPRESSOR CSL 18 MAX.....33. 2 Forward Thank you for your purchase of a shotblasting machine from BlastPro Manufacturing, Inc. ... Note:

Work area has been blocked off to pedestrians, unprotected personnel, and untrainedpersonnel. In the event pedestrians, unprotected personnel, or untrained personnel enterthe work area, blasting operations are to be stopped immediately.

Fire extinguishers are nearby. Also, take note of the location and the contact informationof fire departments close to the work site.

Belt guards are in working order and are present on the machine where needed. All glass and equipment, including vehicles, are protected from steel shot. This can be

done by loosely hanging a sheet of visqueen or other protective material in front of theglass or equipment in a curtain-like fashion. The importance of protecting glass andequipment from steel shot cannot be overemphasized.

Plug or cover all floor drains to prevent steel shot from falling into the drains. This equipment is only to be used for commercial purposes. This equipment is only to be

operated by professional, trained, and competent operators. The operator must be aware of their surroundings and use common sense. THE

OPERATOR IS NOT TO OPERATE THE EQUIPMENT IF HE IS TIRED,DISTRACTED, OR UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF DRUGS, ALCOHOL, ORMEDICATION THAT DECREASES AWARENESS!

Safety — Start Up

After performing the site assessment safety procedures listed above, bring the BPZ-20-360° tothe work area and perform the following procedures:

Before putting the BPZ-20-360° in operation, make certain that the belt guards are ingood condition.

Inspect the BPZ-20-360° and dust collector for damage, tears, or other signs of wear. Verify that all fittings and hoses are tight. Inspect the dust collector. Verify that the dust collector is empty and that the filters are

clean and clear of debris.Note: The dust collector must be emptied at the end of each job.

Make sure that the caster and the rear drive wheels are clean and free of debris. MAKE CERTAIN TO ALWAYS SIT PROPERLY IN THE BPZ-20-360° BEFORE

STARTING IT AND WHILE IT IS IN OPERATION! NEVER OPERATEEQUIPMENT FROM A STANDING POSITION!

Blast in a straight line. Blasting in a straight line will produce the most uniform results.NEVER RUN OVER ANYTHING WITH THE BPZ-20-360°! RUNNING OVERAN EXTENSION CORD, AIR LINES, REBAR EXPANSION JOINTS,OPENINGS IN FLOOR, DRAINS, ETC. WITH THE BPZ-20-360° CAN RESULTIN SERIOUS INJURY TO THE OPERATOR AND/OR DAMAGE TO THEEQUIPMENT!

Make certain to keep hands away from all moving parts once the machine is in operation. Make certain to never stand next to the blast housing while the BPZ-20-360° is in

operation as blade failure could result in serious injury.

Page 7: BPZ-20-360° Table of Contents · SCHULZ COMPRESSOR CSL 18 MAX.....33. 2 Forward Thank you for your purchase of a shotblasting machine from BlastPro Manufacturing, Inc. ... Note:

Make certain that the shot hopper door is closed while the machine is in operation as theBPZ-20-360° throws shot which could present a serious danger if the shot hopper door isnot properly closed.

Make certain that the blast seals of the BPZ-20-360° are not worn out. As these sealsprovide the suction that is required by the machine, they will become dislodged if theybecome worn out. This will then result in shot being discharged from the machine. It isconsequently recommended that the operator make absolutely certain that the blast sealsare in good working condition before putting the BPZ-20-360° into operation.

In the unlikely event of a failure, turn the ignition key to the OFF position.

Safety — Operation Procedures

When operating the BPZ-20-360°, perform the following safety procedures:

SUPPORT PERSONNEL MUST KEEP A SAFE DISTANCE FROM THEMACHINE WHILE IT IS IN OPERATION! DO NOT STAND IN FRONT OFTHE MACHINE WHILE IT IS IN OPERATION!

Since the speed of the machine determines the depth of its cut, it is advised that theoperator run a test pattern. Failure to run a test pattern could result in the machinegouging the floor.

The pattern needs to be inspected by the operator at least every ten feet as variation inconcrete means that the concrete or the coated surface may be softer in some areas than itis in others.

Whenever the dust collector becomes full, it must be emptied. Failure to empty the dustcollector could result in the machine losing its suction to the floor. If this happens, thenall of the shot will fall out of the shot hopper.

If the gap between the blades and the wear bar is 3/16 of an inch or greater, then shot willbegin to fall out of the machine. Eventually, all shot will escape if the gap between theblades and the wear bar remains at 3/16 of an inch or greater.

HYDRAULIC FLUID UNDER PRESSURE IS DANGEROUS AND CAN CAUSESERIOUS INJURY OR EVEN DEATH! WHEN IGNITED, HYDRAULICFLUIDS CAN EXPLODE AND/OR CAUSE FIRES!

THE HYDRAULIC SYSTEM RUNS AT OR BELOW 500 PSI, NEVER LOOKFOR A LEAK WHEN THE BPZ-20-360° SYSTEM IS UNDER PRESSURE!HANDS SHOULD NEVER BE USED TO LOOK FOR A LEAK WHEN THESYSTEM IS UNDER PRESSURE! EVEN A PINHOLE LEAK CAN CAUSESERIOUS INJURY! THE LEAK COULD BE ALMOST INVISIBLE WHENESCAPING FROM A PINHOLE-SIZED LEAK. ESCAPING HYDRAULICFLUID UNDER PRESSURE CAN PIERCE THE SKIN AND ENTER THE BODY!NEVER ALLOW PERSONNEL TO TOUCH ANY HYDRAULIC LINE ORFITTING WITH ANY PART OF THEIR BODY WHEN THE SYSTEM ISUNDER PRESSURE!

When shutting down the BPZ-20-360°, always perform the following safety procedures:

Close shot valve. Turn ignition switch on the BPZ-20-360° to the OFF position. Empty dust from the dust collector. WHEN REMOVING DUST FROM DUST

COLLECTOR, ALWAYS WEAR A PARTICLE MASK. CONCRETE DUSTMAY CONTAIN PARTICLES WHICH ARE EXTREMELY HAZARDOUS!THESE PARTICLES SHOULD NEVER BE INHALED!

Empty all shot from the shot hopper on the BPZ-20-360°. Shot should never be left inBPZ-20-360° after work is performed. Never move or transport BPZ-20-360° with shotin the shot hopper as this may result in damage to the equipment.

AFTER COMPLETING WORK, CLEAN ALL STRAY SHOT FROM WORKAREA. SHOT CAN BE CLEANED WITH A MAGNETIC BROOM OR WITH ASHOP VACUUM. NEVER LEAVE STRAY SHOT IN WORK AREA AS SHOTREPRESENTS A SLIP AND FALL HAZARD! STEPPING AND FALLING ONSTEEL SHOT CAN RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURY OR EVEN DEATH!

Safety — Maintenance Procedures

When performing maintenance on the BPZ-20-360°, make certain that the following safetyprocedures are followed:

Verify that the BPZ-20-360° is not in operation. Attempting to perform maintenanceoperations on the BPZ-20-360° while in operation can lead to serious injury or death.

Be certain that the ignition key has been removed from the BPZ-20-360° and that thebattery cables have been disconnected.

Make sure that the BPZ-20-360° is on a level and stable surface. Allow the engine and the exhaust system to cool down before attempting to carry out

maintenance or repair work. If repairing the underside of the BPZ-20-360°, then be certain to use jack stands.

Never work under equipment that is not properly blocked. FAILURE TO REPLACE LOOSE OR DAMAGED PARTS COULD CAUSE

DAMAGE TO THE EQUIPMENT AND/OR SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATHTO THE OPERATOR!

Verify that aggressive cleaning products are not used. MAKE CERTAIN TO NEVER WELD, FLAME CUT/TORCH, OR PERFORM

ANY GRINDINGWORK ON THE BPZ-20-360° WITHOUT WRITTENAUTHORIZATION FROM THE MANUFACTURER!

Operating Instructions

1. Verify that personnel are competent and that they have read and understood the safetyinformation in this manual. Make certain that all personnel follow all safety instructionsand programs required by their company and by the worksite.

2. Verify that the BPZ-20-360° is on a level, clean, debris-free, and dry surface.3. Verify that the dust bin in the dust collector is empty.4. Open propane tank valve or flip selector switch to gasoline.5. Sit down in the seat of the BPZ-20-360°.6. Ensure that the hydraulic levers are centered.7. Make sure that the throttle is pushed all the way down.8. Adjust throttle by pulling up on the throttle control.9. Lock throttle for shot blasting by turning the throttle clockwise.10. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.11. To steer the machine, manipulate the hydraulic levers.

Note: See Hydraulic Levers section below for further instruction.12. Start moving the machine forward and then slowly open up the shot valve (the slower the

machine moves while the blast wheel is engaged, the deeper the cut will be to theunderlying surface).

13. When arriving at a stopping point, shut off the shot valve about ten feet before stoppingthe machine. Performing this operation will clear the machine’s housing of shot whichwill prevent the BPZ-20-360° from blasting a hole in the underlying surface when itcomes to a complete stop.

Operation Adjustments

The BPZ-20-360° can be manipulated to make blasting easier for the operator.

Wear Bar: Before operating the BPZ-20-360°, the wear bar clearance must be checkedby the operator. The wear bar should have 3/16 of an inch of clearance for allapplications in order to ensure the best blasting results. After adjusting the wear bar, it ishighly recommended that the operator spin the blast wheel to make certain that all bladeshave clearance.

Vacuum Adjust Plate: This plate allows the operator to adjust the amount of vacuumforce that is pulled through the blast housing. It can be adjusted to alter the amount of airflow allowed. Located within the shot hopper, opening this plate allows more vacuumforce and air flow. Closing this plate, conversely, dampens/restricts the vacuum forceand air flow.

Front End Lift: Although used primarily for loading and unloading the BPZ-20-360°,this feature can also be used to adjust the blasting seals while the machine is in operation. This allows the operator to adjust the seals without having to stop the machine andmanually manipulate the seals.

Seals: In order to set the seals to the correct height, first make sure that the machine is ona level surface. Then, put the BPZ-20-360° in a slow forward motion. Next, bump themachine lower switch until the front seal touches the surface being blasted and bendsslightly. Finally, stop the machine and assure that the side seals are also touching thefloor.

Maintenance

NOTE: ALL ROTATING PARTS MUST BE COMPLETELY STOPPED BEFOREATTEMPTING TO PERFORM ANY MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES!

Wear Bar Removal and Installation

When the blast wheel is turned so that a blade is as close as possible to the wear bar, there shouldbe a gap of no more than 3/16 of an inch. If the gap is greater than 3/16 of an inch, the wear barwill need to be repositioned.

1. Remove the wear bar.a. Remove the wear bar retaining clip by first removing the two 1/4 inch bolts on

both ends of it.b. Screw a slide hammer with a 5/16 or a 3/8 inch adapter into the threads at the

center of the wear bar.c. Remove the wear bar.

2. Turn the wear bar 180 degrees, or one half of a turn, to use the edge that is directlyopposite the edge previously used.Note: If both edges have been used, then flip the bar end over end to use theopposite two edges. This gives you a total of four edges that can be used.

3. Reinsert the wear bar.4. Replace the wear bar retaining clip.

Blast Wheel Removal

1. Remove the lower belt guard.2. Remove blast wheel sheave and taper lock bushing.

a. Remove the two Allen head set screws from opposite sides of the blast wheelsheave.

b. Take one of the set screws and insert it into the third hole of the sheave that isperpendicular to the original two holes.

c. Turn the screw into the hole all the way until the screw separates the sheave fromthe taper lock bushing.Note: Once they have separated, the pressure holding the sheave and bushingonto the shaft will be released.

Dust Collector Function

The BPZ-20-360° shot blasting machine is equipped with an auto pulse dust collector that helpsto both separate the dust from the shot and to return clean air back into the environment.

The most fundamental part of the dust collector is referred to as the filter chamber. Aircontaining dust particles enters the filter chamber from the blasthead via the exhaust hose. Thisair then moves into the dust collector inlet connection located on the left, front side of the dustcollector. Next, the air passes through a plenum and moves through eight filter cartridges. These eight filter cartridges capture the dust particles and prevent them from moving on with theair. Now dust-free, the air then passes to the clean air portion of the dust collector where it issubsequently released back into the environment by way of the silencer box.

The dust captured by the filter cartridges is removed at regular intervals. This dust is removedby the pulsing of the filter cartridges with a blast of compressed air released from the header tankby means of a diaphragm valve. One of the BPZ-20-360°’s three blow-down tubes delivers thecompressed air. The temporary pulse of compressed air causes the dust to plummet into the dustbins located at the base of the filter chamber. Three filters are sequentially pulsed. The timingof the pulsing is determined by a timer board which is located in the control box on the front ofthe dust collector. The timer board is typically configured so as to pulse a three filter sectionevery ten seconds. The timer board acts to determine the time between pulses and the length ofeach pulse. Venturi valves are positioned above each filter cartridge to increase the effectivenessof the filter cleaning process.

Dust Collector Maintenance

The dust collector must be examined habitually. This is because adequate ventilation is essentialfor the dust collector. It is therefore essential that the following areas are routinely examined.

Leaks on the blower housing assembly seal and on the dust collector access door sealshould be kept at a minimum. The dust collector access door seal can be checked forleaks by carefully feeling for air leaks around the seal.

Check door seal for missing or damaged sections. The hose connections between the blasthead and the dust collector must be tight and kept

in place with the use of metal clamps. The hose must be in good condition. Flattened spots, holes, and wear spots should be

corrected without haste. Hose must be replaced if necessary. Filter cartridges must be kept in good, working condition.

If the dust collector is not in proper, working order, then this can have a detrimental effect on theentire system. Improper ventilation can result in inadequate abrasive cleaning which hastensblast wheel and liner wear. It is, consequentially, essential that the dust collector be wellmaintained. A dust collector that receives timely, regular maintenance will result in less abrasivecontamination which will help to both reduce operating costs and increase overall effectiveness.
