I Believe...

The Advanced Cast of the ClubHouse Theatre program gave a heart-pounding performance of

“The Axe of Murder” to help get the kids at the Kingston branch into the spooky spirit. The play had

kids on the edges of their seats, delighted to be just a little bit scared! Continuing the Halloween

fun, the Advanced Cast also put on “The Haunted ClubHouse” tour early on Halloween night. Teen

ClubHouse Theatre members practiced their improv skills as they performed as scary monsters

and ghosts for thrill seekers. Kids worked on the sets, helped create their own costumes and

characters, and did their own makeup, making this event “by the kids, for the kids.” To go along

with the Haunted ClubHouse tours, the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort sent 10 of their

managers to help Club staff put on a special Halloween carnival. Kids had a fantastic time with a

bounce house, face painting and tons of Halloween themed games like a candy-corn relay, an eye-

ball hunt, pin the stem on the pumpkin, an icky guessing game and more.

Kids of all ages got into the spirit of the year’s spookiest holiday…

Here is a sneak peak at the Club’s dream.

Preschoolers are taking their first steps on the road to academic success through “Readiness on

the Road,” a free program funded through the Orange County Children & Families Commission and

the Boys & Girls Clubs of Orange County Alliance. While kids are at school and our Clubs would

normally be unoccupied, the Kingston and Huntington Beach Branches have become a host site

for this exciting program offering preschool instruction and parent education to 45 economically

disadvantaged families with children ages 2 ½ -5. In classes offered one day each week, children

learn the fundamentals that will prepare them for Kindergarten and parents learn what their

children need to be healthy and academically ready for school. In a “We Learn Together” segment

of the program, parents have the chance to become the teacher and gain confidence in practicing

school readiness activities that they can do with their children at home. Because healthy kids

are better able to learn, the program offers free dental, hearing and vision screening from school

readiness and public health nurses and referrals to free and low-cost healthcare resources in the

community. The Club is thrilled to partner with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Orange County Alliance

to help our community’s youngest members get ready for success!

The Club joined in Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s and Nickelodeon’s efforts to remind kids about other ways to play besides video games, TV, computers and other electronics by participating in the Worldwide Day of Play. Each room of the Club featured organized games throughout the day. Kids played games like “Capture the Flag” and participated in game tournaments like pool and Jenga. Unit Director Shannon Roache said “About 250 of our members participated. It was awesome to see boys and girls interacting in games that they would not normally play—we even had boys playing freeze dance! The kids loved it and our parents were very appreciative! Overall, it was a wonderful day that I want to consider having once a month due to the amazing outcome!”

PAYLKids from the Club’s two preschools had lots of Halloween

fun! Tots from the Learning Center grew their own

pumpkins this year in a garden that they

water and weed each day. Children from the

Golden West College Child Development

Center went to the pumpkin patch, many

for the very first time. While there, they

not only got to explore the patch and get

their very own toddler-sized mini-pumpkins

to take home, they also got to meet all the

animals in the pumpkin patch’s petting

zoo. Classrooms at both preschools

carved jack-o-lanterns and used

pumpkin “guts” as an exciting

new sensory experience.

You can help make a Boys & Girls Club member’s holidays special days this year. By making a contribution in the enclosed envelope, you can help the Club create baskets of all the makings of Thanksgiving dinner, which will be given to low-income immigrant families in our Twilight Education Project family literacy program who are getting into the spirit of their new country’s special holiday. Or, your gift could help make sure that every kid at the Club has a Christmas this year by supporting our annual Toys for Tots party for children whose families are struggling financially. By giving as little as $25, you can help give the kids at the Club a holiday season to remember.
