This is not an entry blank. It serves as a reminder to schools of the possibilities and responsibilities in interscholastic journalism and notifies all schools of the State Contest entry deadline. The NSAA is involved in two journalism events: 1. Fall Conference, October 28, 2002. 2. State Contest, May 3, 2003, with finals scheduled in Lincoln. A school must register in journalism (see Registration Form, Page 3) with the NSAA before participating in either of these events, or any other interscholastic journalism clinic/contest where competition is involved. A school must submit a certificate of eligibility for all students whose works are entered in the journalism state contest, just as schools certify to the eligibility of students participating in speech, plays, debate and athletics. Check the eligibility of your journalism students PRIOR to submitting state contest entries for them to avoid having the entry disqualified sometime later in the contest. Entry forms for the state contest will be mailed in January to all schools. These entries will be handled by the Nebraska High School Press Association headquartered at the UNL College of Journalism. Contest categories include:

Advertising, Black & White Photography, Color Photography, Column Writing, Editorial Cartooning, Editorial Writing, Entertainment Writing, Headline Writing, In-depth Newspaper Coverage, Info Graphic, Newspaper Feature Writing, Newspaper Layout, News Writing, Photo Illustration, Sports Feature Writing, Sports News Coverage, Yearbook Feature Writing, Yearbook Layout, and Yearbook Theme Development.

A judge is assigned to each event to provide the following: First-second-third in each class, and the top-12 entries regardless of class. Entries in the top-12 and all class champions may participate in the state contest where all entries in a category are given the same project and judged against others in the category. Medals are given to the top three finishers in each state final. Info Graphic, Photo Illustration, and In-depth Newspaper Coverage are complicated events with finals based on the first entries and are not a part of the state finals agenda. Details of the fall conference will be mailed in September to all NSAA member schools by the Nebraska High School Press Association (NHSPA), with headquarters at the UNL School of Journalism. The NSAA co-sponsors this event with the NHSPA.
