Legacy ClubThis the last item for Scuttlebutt for 2015 - each year seems to pass faster than the previous one.

Our last meeting followed by the AGM was quite well attended. The committee for 2016 was elected and congratulated by Legatee Norm McDonnell.

Barbara Kearney (one of our members) then spoke of her trip to Gallopili earlier this year. This was so interesting, and as she said, something she and her daughter (who accompanied her) will never forget.

Christmas lunch will be held in the Upton Rm on Tuesday 8th December.

A big thanks from our Club to the RSL for all the help given to us - there are too many people involved to thank you all individually.

Best wishes to everyone for a merry Christmas and a happy healthy year in 2016.

FREE MOVIE FOR MEMBERS

“The Neighbour”THURSDAY, 22ND OCTOBER, 2015 AT 10.30Presented by Ray Wall

"In the mould of the traditional 'Pride and Prejudice' romance. This movie adds a little extra character depth and a number of excellently crafted comical moments all wrapped around a fairly simple plot of ice lady meets lost, passionate artistic man. Entertaining and real.

Matthew Modine takes on the role of the forlorn architect desperate to show he can disprove his ex wife's opinion of him as the eternal dreamer. Michèle Laroque takes the aloof ice maiden model and gives it a light comical edge from the first to the last as she is slowly warmed.... "

27th OCTOBER MEETING Our singer/entertainer was Claire Dubery. Claire took us on a musical journey through the 40's,50's, 60's and 70's as well as playing a few songs on the Ukulele. Her voice was powerful, pure and at times heavenly. She sang gentle love songs and had us clapping and singing along with dance songs. As she sang, 'Strangers in the Night' she danced amongst us and had eager chaps putting up their hands to be touched!!!!!! We heard songs from Celine, Buble, Dean Martin, and Frank Sinatra. Her finale, a rendition of 'Granada' was a powerful performance which showed off her classical training. Thanks to Claire for an hour of great entertainment.

10th NOVEMBER MEETING Mr Ian Crawford was our guest speaker for this meeting. Ian is the grandson of the famous radio and TV entrepreneur Mr Hector Crawford and he took us through the history of the famous Crawford family and some of the successes of the great Hector Crawford. Hector created the largest Drama Production Company in Australia as well as the largest TV Drama Production Company. Ian explained how television was introduced into Australia for the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne and how primitive the equipment was then. Nonetheless, Crawford went on to produce famous shows such as In Melbourne Tonight with the well reputed presenter Graeme Kennedy, Matlock Police, Division 4, Hunter and Homicide which became the most popular drama on Australian TV ever. Hector was also a great forward thinker and was the first to bring in celebrities from overseas such as Henry Mancini and the famous Liberace. You will all recall the long running Flying Doctors and The Sullivans – we and our kids grew up with. In 1987-1988 the Crawford family made the difficult decision to sell the company. This unfortunately coincided with the crash of stock market shares and the Company stopped producing. Ian managed to make his talk informative and funny and telling us the great history of our radio and TV productions.

MYSTERY TRIP

20TH OCTOBER. We set off on our annual Mystery Trip. The morning was warm and sunny.

Before boarding the coach, Mary and Shirley collected one dollar of each to enter our “Guess the Kilometre” competition; Box Hill and return, the winner take all. With 44 on board it was a good collect for our winner.

As we travelled, the “Guessing” began as to the destination. This was changed many times, and ranged from Walhalla to Lakes Entrance. Our final destination was Old Gippstown Historic Park in Moe. En route, we stopped for morning tea in Yarragon.

Hosts Sue and Rod made us feel welcome on arrival. After a talk about the Park and its variety of buildings, set in a beautiful garden setting, we went on a guided tour first stopping at the old school building. The desks, books, blackboard etc. were reminiscent of our old school days. We all behaved in class except for naughty Jocelyn, who arrived late, met with the teacher’s wrath, and was made to bend over and receive a good caning.

In total, there are 44 old buildings, which include a Post Office, jail, lolly shop, general store, garage, old carriage house, houses etc.all brought in from different locations and erected in the Park. The morning tour concluded with a delicious two-course lunch in the purpose built dining room.

After lunch, we visited the old Tynong movie theatre where we sat down and watched a screening of a silent movie starring Laurel and Hardy. It was very funny and different from the talkies.

The Park has many old vehicles garaged there. An old 1939 fire truck and a 1925 Chevrolet were made available for us all to enjoy a ride around the confines of the Park, which we did amongst much merriment and laughter.

All too soon, it was time to leave for home after a very enjoyable day.

We had travelled a total of 259 km. Carmen Ward’s guess was exactly that and was the winner of the day. Congratulations Carmen.

Hello Ladies

Our October meeting was well attended hence we can tell the weather is getting better.

Our speaker was Cliff Hardy. Cliff was a most interesting speaker telling us about his life in the Merchant Navy. Cliff started in the merchants at an early age, approximately 16, going through a school for starting your career. After a while Cliff was allocated a ship on which to work, he lost his way so many times, as being the junior officer he got all the not so pleasant tasks; cleaning the ship, polishing the brass etc. But Cliff, being the determined young man he is, soon took on many exams and worked his way up the ranks till he received his own room meaning he has achieved the rank of 1st Officer. Once Cliff had worked his way up within the organization life was good and then to make it even better he had met a lovely lady and they married during this time.

Our bus trip was to the Yan Yean Reservoir Park which is home to Melbourne’s oldest water catchment. We visited the caretakers’ cottage where our guide presented a wonderful talk on the area and the history of the cottage as well as walking around the area. The cottage was built in 1853 and it emphasized the stature of the people of that era.

After we finished our tour we hopped back on the bus and headed to the Whittlesea Golf Club for a lovely 2 course lunch and a little flutter on the pokies. We got back to the club around 4pm.

I would like to once again thank Bernice for arranging our bus trips and functions; she does a great job especially trying to keep things affordable yet pleasant and as interesting as she can. We are always open to suggestions for things to do or see, please let me or Bernice know of anything you may have in mind.

Thank you to my committee, Gwen (Sec) best in the business, Maria (Treas) doing a sterling job, not an easy one at this time of year. Each lady has a job to do and they all do it well. Faye (mini tatts) and anything else that’s needed to be done, Bette (trading table) she could sell snow to the eskimos well done, Bette. Eileen preparing the raffle tickets has it down to a fine art now and for also supplying us with lollies on the bus trips even when she doesn’t go, well done Eilly. Helen for always being ready to be assistance and offer guidance to Maria in her 1st year, this is such a great help. Willie cleans up after functions in double quick time and when she is not there I can tell you it takes us a lot longer, thanks Willy.

I would also like to thank Ray Jones for all his help through the year supporting Helen and the committee and big thanks to you both for a great job in the buying of the gifts for the Xmas stocking (Make sure you all support the Xmas effort). Thanks also to my husband Bob, who never finds anything too much trouble, in helping me in my President's duties in the Auxiliary.

Thank you to the Sub-Branch executive, Committee and staff for their support through the year.

Last but by no means least you ladies, who without you we would not be the strong auxiliary we are SO A BIG thank you to you all.

I wish you all a Merry Xmas and a happy and healthy New Year

Well for now take care.

LONE PINE TREE

The Lone Pine (a descendent of the original Lone Pine at Gallipoli) which was kindly donated by the Trustees of Box Hill Cemetery was planted in Box Hill Gardens near the Cenotaph by the City of Whitehorse just in time for the Remembrance Day Service. There are not very many Lone Pines in existence and we are lucky to have one. Thank you Box Hill Cemetery and the City of Whitehorse.

Cerberus Trip‘The 20th of October has arrived and we’re on the way to the Cerberus Naval School in Hastings. On arrival we meander around the magnificent grounds and are invited to look inside the Chapels. Both are beautiful structures. The Catholic chapel has a marvellous set of stained glass windows and tucked away in an alcove is a plaque in memory of Bing Crosby who contributed to the chapel building. At the Museum we were welcomed by our guide Tony who generously shared his knowledge of the museum, its objects and stories. After watching the Parade, the next stop was the bar of the Crib Point RSL where a lovely cold beverage or two were consumed. We were made to feel very welcomed by volunteer staff and provided a lovely lunch before reboarding the coach to return to our club.

Regards, Tour bus guide. Bob Mc Lellan.

GREENS OPENING DAYEach year, bowling clubs throughout Australia commence their preparations for the Bowls Pennant Season which runs from late September to the end of February each year.

At Box Hill RSL Bowls, preparation includes an Opening Day to signal to members that trials are under way for selectors to determine the composition of teams to represent Box Hill RSL in the first round of the season. Competition for positions in the teams during September is vigorous for the right to represent the club in the first round of both the Midweek and Saturday pennant competitions.

At this year’s Opening Day on the 15 September 2015, the President of the Eastern Ranges Region – Ray McDonald - officially opened the Box Hill RSL Green and underlined the importance of the occasion by pointing out to our members that it was time to ‘start your engines!’. This was followed by bowlers enjoying a

game of bowls on the newly opened Green then a tasty afternoon tea to wind up the proceedings.

We are sure that all Box Hill RSL members wish our bowls teams well as they strive to add further trophies to their cabinet as they compete with Clubs as far afield as Whittlesea, Monbulk, Yarra Junction, Alphington, Lilydale and Yarra Glen!

PIE NIGHT

It is a tradition at Box Hill RSL Bowls that a Pie Night is held a few days before the opening round of the Bowls season to announce the teams, advise of any special rules that will apply throughout the season and for the selectors to advise how teams will be selected after the first round.

It is also a tradition of the Bowls fraternity in Victoria to make an award to bowlers who have achieved the age of 80, with the presentation of an’ OBE’ - an ‘Over Bloody Eighty’ badge.

This year, an ’OBE’ was presented to Doreen Brooker.

Free Travel Giving Veterans The Support They Deserve An estimated 500 Victorian veterans who were seriously injured on Australian soil during their service are now eligible for free public transport travel passes.

The government has changed the eligibility requirements for free travel, removing the requirement that a recipient had served overseas at war or in peacekeeping operations. So you may now be eligible as previously, veterans classified as Totally Permanently Incapacitated or Extreme Disablement Adjustment were only eligible for a Public Transport Victoria Free Travel Pass if their injuries were sustained in service overseas. The change means veterans injured in training operations and other incidents will now get the support they deserve.

You can get further information from the Public Transport Victoria web site or ring Faye on 9898 2044

Four new members welcomed as our 2015 “Members of the Year”The Sub-Branch elected Charles Kook and Vic Allen, our two Vietnam veterans who have performed the saddest of tasks, that is, conducting the RSL funeral service when one of our veteran members has died.

The third member is Chris Lambert. Chris has performed many tasks within at least two sporting sections, but his most famous role has been our Santa during the annual children’s Christmas Party.

Having fifty kids crawling over you can’t be fun.

Our fourth member is a good-looking young lady, Cheryl Frail. Cheryl is a tireless worker firstly within the Bowling Section, performing all manner of tasks, then secondly, she can be found in the Welfare Office assisting our Welfare Co-ordinators, Faye and Kathy in caring for our members.
