Tackett of Huntington, Ind., has been selected as 2012-13 Harry Golden Professional Bowl- ers Association Rookie of the Year by an overwhelming mar- gin in voting by PBA members and veteran bowling journal- ists, PBA Commissioner Tom Clark also announced today. Clark also announced that Australia’s Jason Belmonte, Sean Rash of Montgomery, Ill., and 51-year-old PBA Hall of Famer Pete Weber of St. Ann, Mo., are the three lead- ing vote-getters in the 2012-13 Chris Schenkel PBA Player of the Year competition. The win- ner will be announced live on PBA’s online bowling channel, Xtra Frame, Friday at 5 p.m. ET from Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park, Mich., where the Barbasol PBA Tournament of Champions gets underway on Saturday. The end-of-season awards announcements culminate an expanded 14-month campaign that began in November 2012 and ended Dec. 31, 2013, as the PBA returned to a tradi- tional calendar year season that began on Jan. 1. Tackett, a 21-year-old two- time Junior Team USA and one-time adult Team USA member, was thrilled with his award. “It’s awesome,” he said. “I joined a pretty good list of guys, a bunch of hall of famers and future hall of famers, so I’m in pretty good company.” Tackett, who left Indiana- Purdue at Fort Wayne to begin his PBA Tour career in time for the 2013 PBA Winter Swing in Detroit, was the overwhelming choice over Shawn Maldona- do, Houston; Craig Nidiffer, Trenton, Mich.; Mik Stampe, Denmark, and Bryan Viator, Friendswood, Texas. Tackett’s abbreviated season included a fourth-place finish in the Wolf Open during the 2013 PBA Summer Swing, a sixth-place finish in the U.S. Open and a third-place finish in the end- of-season Round1 Japan Cup, which he entered as a non-in- vited TQR competitor. new year, new approach? we can only hope by Jim Goodwin BNN

bowling has an image problem. What is bowling? For millions, it is an iconic American game that is simply taken for granted. It is one of a myriad of things in our lives, and we truly don’t give much thought to our practice of occasionally hitting the alleys as a family or as a fun outing as a teen or as a healthy social gathering place for seniors. And most people rarely, if ever, think of bowling as a sport that can be played as a profession.Marketing studies tell us that 70 million Americans bowl at least once a year. That makes bowling not only a good game, but a good business. From personal experience, I can tell you that it is not an easy business, but running a successful center is very rewarding in a variety of ways. The relationships that proprietors and managers develop with good customers are priceless, and sometimes last a lifetime.

But in 2014, is bowling a SPORT?For those of us who have followed the pro tours or played the game on a high level, there is no question that it is one of the most technical and challenging sports in the world. We also know that the vast majority of Americans don’t see it as we do. We are told that the game is held in high regard in places like Europe and Asia, but if those places follow the American lead of turning bowling into a mere recreation, it won’t be long before any chance of seeing bowling in the Olympics or on a world-wide professional tour will be lost. Perhaps it already is.Strong evidence that bowling as a sport is in very serious trouble is abundant. Start with an 80% decline in organized league bowling since 1980. Add to that the many failed efforts to get bowling into the Olympics, and the disappearance of an American women’s pro tour. And the PBA Tour is really no longer a tour . . . it is a small series of gatherings where multiple television shows are produced and players vie for relatively small prize funds. Today, if we randomly ask Americans to name a top bowler, many if not most would give answers like Carter and Weber, names from bowling’s glory days of more than a half century ago. Others would not be able to name even one.Recent efforts to promote bowling seem to indicate that even the top leaders in the industry have accepted that bowling is primarily a recreation. Print ads, provided by BPAA, USBC and the International Bowling Campus in Arlington which have been running free of charge in this newspaper and many others, say “Bowling is a healthy way to live” and “Bowling promotes family bonding – fun for kids & parents too,” and “Bowling provides an excellent source of positive social interactions that can improve health and increase quality of life.”The ad also says that “250+ colleges and high schools in 47 states offer bowling,” and that “The bowling industry provides more than $6 million in scholarships each year.” That is all well and good, and we applaud these efforts; and we are proud to provide these positive messages for free, but did you notice the word SPORT anywhere in these ads? It reminds us of the time when Bowling Inc. started and they came up with the slogan “More Bowlers, bowling more often, having more fun.” We asked then “What about the sport?” and we are asking again now.

Industry and Mainstream MediaRecently, Bowlers Journal Magazine celebrated its 100th anniversary, and it got a fair amount of attention from media sources outside the industry. The most prominent came from an article written by Kevin Helliker for the Wall Street Journal on December 9.Helliker’s article Bowlers Journal International Rolls On was about the incredible longevity of the BJ, but in his research for the piece, Helliker uncovered some inconvenient truth about bowling that could not be ignored; thus the sub-headline Tough times strike bowling and bowling journalists, but one magazine recently turned 100.Helliker’s interpretation seems to be ‘In spite of bowling’s problems, the BJ somehow miraculously managed to survive 100 years.’BJ President Keith Hamilton had mixed feelings about the article. In Jim Dressel’s Cyber Report, Hamilton said “I’m very apprecia-tive of the praise given by the author about the magazine. But I can’t help but be disappointed by the negative tone that the author set in order to describe the industry. It was not fair to bowling in the sense that it didn’t explain why Bowlers Journal made it to 100 years in spite the reasons the author cited.”Helliker is not some rookie writer. He is a 54-year-old senior writer and editor for one of the most respected newspapers in the world. In 2004, he jointly won a Pulitzer Prize in explanatory reporting with writing partner Thomas Burton for a groundbreaking examina-tion of aneurysms. To answer Keith Hamilton’s charge that he did not explain how the BJ lasted 100 years, I would say he did offer a few reasons why the BJ survived in a flailing industry. In addition to Hamilton, he interviewed former BJ owner Mort Luby. Mort told him that two of the reasons the BJ held on were the facts that most of the competition lacked journalism credentials, and that Brunswick never wavered in its advertising support, buying the back page of every BJ issue ever published. He also cited that the BJ was “Unafraid of controversy,” using Jim Dressel’s Bowlitically Incorrect column as an example. He did not mention Dressel by name, but he did confirm the philosophy with PBA commissioner Tom Clark, who told him “If the PBA is doing something that the Bowlers Journal doesn’t like, I’ll read about it.”Helliker also interviewed professional bowlers Norm Duke and Diandra Asbaty. Asbaty studied journalism at the University of Ne-braska and is now a BJ writer. The truth that may sting for some is Helliker’s factual description of where all bowling publications stand today, including the BJ. “As a magazine that covers bowling, Bowlers Journal operates at the intersection of bad and worse” he wrote. “The magazine industry is troubled, losing advertisers to the Internet. And since 1980, the number of competitive bowlers in America plummeted from almost nine million to about two million, leaving most bowling publications with no place to go except broke. The latest to tumble: 20-year-old Bowling This Month, a magazine that published its final issue this autumn, citing economic difficulties.”Helliker even went so far as to interview Dr. Samir A. Husni, director of the University of Mississippi’s Magazine Innovation Center. Husni shared that the BJ was one of only about 100 U. S. magazines that lasted 100 years out of about 10,000 magazines on the U.S. market. Dr. Samir expressed surprise that the BJ made it to the century mark, saying “You hear people say that magazines are dead, and you hear people say that bowling is dead. Yet here you have a 300-page bowling magazine.”

what now?We hope that this eye opening article will be a wake up call for bowling leaders from all corners of the industry, and that at least some of them will finally realize that all of us together can make bowling better. It is no longer just people like me and Jim Dressel and a few others pointing out that changes are in order; it is a completely objective journalist with no skin in the game saying that bowling is in trouble. Yes, this is only one article of this type, but it is not the first and won’t be the last. Why do people like Helliker and Husni and millions more have a negative impression of bowling? Because we don’t do a good job of selling bowling the way it should be sold – as a sport first and foremost; like tennis, or golf, or name any other sport that doubles as a recreation. How can we turn this image problem around? By starting and continuing a massive Public Relations campaign to promote the sport side of bowling; By adding the PBA to the management structure within the International Bowling Campus; by getting serious about bringing back the women’s pro tour; by getting behind the new World Bowling Tour with our ideas and our money; by truly getting behind the International Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame; by supporting other organizations like the BNN, IBMA, and IBPSIA.We often hear the words marketing and public relations in the same sentence. In our view, bowling does a pretty decent job with marketing, except it collectively does not spend enough money, but falls way short on public relations. A good PR campaign can cure an image problem in a few years.Do bowling’s leaders from every corner in the industry have the courage to stop preaching to the choir, take a very hard look in the mirror, and make major changes? Or will they say ‘We have done enough – we just need to continue on the same path until some fairy dust inadvertently lands on us and everything will be alright and we will all be happy.’A few strong leaders got the ball rolling a few years ago when the IBC was created – now is the time to finish what they started. We all owe that much to bowling.

ON THE WINGSOF ANGELS..... by Joy McGregor

Orange County has felt the loss of so very many bowling friends this past year. We now have two more to add to this list. In just the past 3 weeks we have learned of the passing of long-time Orange County bowlers... Maxine Holzinger and Pat Hinkle. The loss of these two friends cuts deep. I bowled with both these ladies and also served as officers in many leagues for several years. Each of these amazing women demanded respect, each in their own right!

Both of these ladies ran their leagues “By the Book” and nothing got by them. They were enforcers, but honest and fair. If you had any concerns or required help interpreting the rules or questions on any aspect, they would research, question the powers that be and then “armed”, would explain all questions or even ‘modify’ some of the rules to suit the league... everyone was happy and satisfied!

Maxine’s husband, Tom, passed several years ago. She has two daughters, Chris and Kate and one son, Bob. She was proud of all her children, especially of her granddaughter, Jessica, who served in the Marine Corps along with her husband; she met him in the Corps. Maxine was a very loving grandmother and also great grandmother.

Max loved all animlas but especially cats and turtles. It was not uncommon to sit in Max’s lovely backyard and see large turtles lumber around the pool looking for a handout of lettuce or berries. For a period of time she even undertook the harvesting of several turtle eggs, keeping ‘em warm under special lights, etc. It paid off. One day instead of merely a mommy and daddy - Voila! A whole family... yikes! She was successful in getting the little critters adopted and then elected to be a mom to just one - great decision!

Anyone who knew Max knew how fastidious she was, you could eat off her garage floor. For heaven’s sake woman, you put us all to shame!

She was a good bowler and for many, many years not only did she bowl her leagues but entered every tournament she could find including state and national. She was an officer in the Orange County 600 Club at the time I was president and she was very instrumental in getting the Club functioning and building up the membership - oh, those were the days!

Max developed Emphysema and eventually the disease forced her to halt her league bowling, about four years ago. She lost her hard-fought battle December 13th due to complications of her Emphysema and Pneumonia. R.I.P. my dear friend. Her services were held December 19th at Rose Hills in Whittier. Sympathy cards may be sent to her daughter Chris Troncoso, 2 El Prisma, Rancho Santa Margarita, 92688.

Pat Hinkle -- what can I say about this charismatic gal? She and Max were so alike from politics to everyday life. Pat was an in-your-face, take no prisoners kinda gal!

She also was an avid bowler and so loved her leagues. Back in the day when sweepstakes was all about stuffing envelopes with the point money and special honor scores and meeting at the sec-retary’s home to count piles of money and “stuff” while having coffee and crumpets and sharing some laughs. Wow, did we really do that? Remember when we used to actually ask bowlers, “Do you want to go in sweepstakes with me and then hand over a $1.00? Just heard that’s what officers of leagues had to do, h’mmm... that’s when the officers really worked!

Pat and I bowled together in leagues for several years and she was the epitome of a “Good” secretary.

Pat’s husband, Ron, retired a number of years ago and they moved to Tennessee, leaving a large void. She always missed California and all her bowling buddies but we always had fun get-togethers when she would visit. Pat would often comment on her re-organizing a bowling league in Tennessee and really got them working well but it just wasn’t the same, personality conflicts and reluctance to change I assume but she persevered. “Stay with it gal”, I would tell her. Pat had a son, Bradley and one daughter, Rhonda. Rhonda and her sweet daughter, Sarah, were in our lunch group frequently; I understand that “little” Sarah now is the proud mother of five...time flies!! Shockingly, Pat suffered a heart attack early in December and underwent triple by-pass surgery. She passed a day before her birthday, December 21st. Sympathy cards may be sent to Ron Hinkle, 4632 N. Pierce Station Rd., South Fulton, Tennessee, 38257. Pat loved and was passionate about bowling and will be truly missed by her family and friends.

Our joys will be greater, our love will be deeper, and our lives will be fuller because we shared their moment...

ing for my first title and not how the other bowler was doing. I only thought about my game.

“I’m very happy. This is a huge tournament to win for my first title,” he beamed. “I’m just very happy.”

The three JPBA players dominated the eight-player finals field. Katoh, who will make his American debut when he bowls in the United States Bowling Congress Masters in February in North Brunswick, N.J., advanced to the title match by eliminat-ing Finland’s Osku Palermaa in his first match, 258-226, and de-feating countryman Shinichi Horie in the semifinal round, 236-195.

Watanabe eliminated Chris Barnes of Double Oak, Texas, 278-239, in the Round of 8 and ended any PBA hopes for a title when he ousted PBA rookie E.J. Tackett of Huntington, Ind., 249-190, in his semifinal round match.

In the other two Round of 8 matches, Horie struck on his last five shots to slip past reigning PBA Player of the Year Sean Rash of Montgomery, Ill., 225-224, while Tackett eliminated two-time Japan Cup winner Tommy Jones of Simpsonville, S.C., 226-224, when Jones left the 2-8-10 on his fill ball in the 10th frame after Tackett missed a 10 pin in his 10th frame to give Jones a chance to win.

PBA coverage on ESPN continues next Sunday at 1 p.m. ET with three hours of coverage of three important aspects of PBA competition involving regional, senior and youth bowlers. The telecast will include the PBA Regional Players Invitational Fi-nals, the PBA50 Tour Finals (the final two events in PBA World Series of Bowling V from South Point Hotel, Casino and Spa in Las Vegas), and the Teen Masters Grand Championship finals.

The RPI Finals will feature six PBA Regional Tour qualifiers: Brian LeClair, Athens, N.Y., representing the East Region; Tom Daugherty, Wesley Chapel, Fla., South Region; Brian Kretzer, Dayton, Ohio, Central Region; Dave Beres, Waukesha, Wis., Midwest Region; Chris Barnes, Double Oak, Texas, Southwest Region, and Ben Laughlin, Chandler, Ariz., West/Northwest Re-gion.

The PBA50 Tour Finals includes three PBA Hall of Famers who qualified based on 2013 PBA50 Tour competition points. Pete Weber of St. Ann, Mo., will bowl in the opening match against Venezuela’s Amleto Monacelli with the winner facing Walter Ray Williams Jr. of Ocala, Fla.

The Teen Masters Grand Championship finals will feature outstanding youth bowlers including defending grand champion Greg Young of Viera, Fla., and defending girls’ champion Ashley Dunn of Palmdale, Calif., in a battle for a $64,000 scholarship package.

NORWALK — So. Calif Deaf Bowlers 51st annual Classic at Keystone Lanes Saturday had a rarity for the first time with husband and wife placing first and second. Daniel and Jennifer Vasquez, La Puente, CA who had not bowled for the previous two seasons and found coming back to bowling this season made it good.

The event drew one of its smallest number of entries, 26 in-cluding defending champion and 4 times winner Mark Fisser try-ing for his 5th title. The best Fisser could do was the day’s high scratch series 866 but with zero handicap, he placed 5th.

In winning Daniel Vasquez rolled 200-242-233-190 for 865 (one pin short of tying Fisser’s high series) and with his 60 handicap, Vasquez scored 925. Because of the small entries the first place prize was $260.00. His wife, Jennifer made good with steady games of 144-139-147-138 for 568 plus a lofty wom-en’s handicap of 324 for a total of 892 for 2nd place prize of $130.00.

Third place $80.00 prize went to Francisco Navarro who start-ed and closed with a pair of 226s for 773 plus his 104 handicap for 877 total. Former champion Mike Moore had a 218 in his 791 plus 76 handicap for 867 total good for the 4th place $55.00. One pin behind Moore was Fisser’s zero handicap 866 from games of 196-247-195-226 placed for $25.00. The last place of $22.00 went to former champion Gorman Low’s closing of a 215 in his series total of 721 plus 136 handicap and 857 total.

The special prizes winners were: Early Bird 12 Noon Squad series with handicap for Woman, Celia Salcedo 722 got $25.00 and for Man, Jeff Stansell 800 got $25.00. The Late Bird 4 PM Squad scratch series for Woman, Celia Salcedo 582 on reentry got $25.00 and for Man, Mark Fisser 866 got $25.00.

The optional scratch High Game pot one prize for women and Celia Salcedo’s 161 won $25.00. The men’s pot had two places with Fisser’s 247 getting him 1st place $55.00 and Daniel Vasquez’s 242 got him extra $25.00.

The So. Calif Deaf Bowlers President Ed Abakumoff and Secretary Treasurer Bob Taylor directed the tournament with assistance of Christine Cissna. Abakumoff and Taylor thanked Keystone Lanes management and staff for letting the club have the tournament on their lanes.

Also Abakumoff and Taylor thanked all entrants for bowling and hope all will return next year with their friends.

happy with what I was doing,” he said “I had no desire to be in school, and it reflected on my school work, so I decided to stop dragging it out and try my hand at the Tour.”

He made his PBA Tour debut during the Winter Swing in De-troit where he cashed in three of four events. He made his first television appearance in the Wolf Open in Milwaukee, finishing fourth. PBA World Series of Bowling V was “a little disappoint-ing,” he said. “I didn’t make a show after being inside the cut three different times, but I had three top 10s, so it wasn’t terrible. “The best tournament I’ve had was in Japan, and the second best was sixth in the U.S. Open,” he said. “That was personally a bet-ter tournament than finishing fourth in the Wolf Open.”

Tackett’s next appearance will be in the Barbasol PBA Tour-nament of Champions, which gets underway Saturday at Thun-derbowl Lanes in Allen Park, Mich. He earned his way into the TOC by winning a PBA Central Region title in May in Ohio.

And his next goal? “A title, for sure,” he said. All three of the leading contenders for the PBA Player of the

Year award, listed in alphabetical order, had great seasons in one of the closest competitions in years. Player of the Year voting began with 13 candidates, all of whom met minimum require-ments for consideration based upon PBA rules. Others on the original ballot included Chris Barnes, Double Oak, Texas; Dom Barrett, England; Parker Bohn III, Jackson, N.J.; Mike Fagan, Fort Worth, Texas; Tommy Jones, Simpsonville, S.C.; Mika Koi-vuniemi, Finland-Hartland, Mich.; Chris Loschetter, Avon, Ohio; Wes Malott, Pflugerville, Texas; Scott Norton, Mission Viejo, Calif., and Bill O’Neill, Langhorne, Pa.

Belmonte hopes to join Venezuela’s Amleto Monacelli and Finland’s Mika Koivuniemi as the third foreign-born player to win the PBA’s highest annual competition honor. He also would be the first two-handed player to win the award.

Belmonte’s 2012-13 season produced two titles, including the USBC Masters – his first major – and runner-up finishes in three other major championships: the 2012 PBA World Champion-ship, U.S. Open and 2013 PBA Tournament of Champions. He won the George Young High Average Award, scoring at a 228.81 pace over 422 games, and the Harry Smith Point Leader Award with 238,903 points. The only major statistical category he didn’t win was earnings, where his $186,465 total ranked third behind Rash’s $248,317 and Koivuniemi’s $227,851.

Rash, the 2011-12 Player of the Year, won two PBA Interna-tional Tour titles in Kuwait and Thailand, and made TV shows in the 2012 and ’13 PBA World Championships and the 2013 TOC. In addition to leading the earnings list, Rash finished third in average and competition points.

Weber, a 37-time PBA Tour champion who has never won Player of the Year, had one of the best years of his career as he entered the PBA50 Tour ranks. In addition to winning the 2013 Tournament of Champions for his record-tying 10th career ma-jor, Weber finished third in the 2013 U.S. Open (an event he has won a record five times) and third in the 2013 PBA World Cham-pionship.

The Semis took the floor. Cut scores to make the top 16 single game elimination finals were +63 for men and women combined. Top Seed was Red Hot Michael Kristich with +194, followed by Cezar Mar-cella, again? YES with +164. Michael will sit out to bowl for the title. Cezar earns a first round bye in the top 16 Single Elims. Top Seed Kristich had the privilege of drawing for the Match Game and the 283 drawn was also unmatched. Our MATCH GAME POT will be a Super $5,000 with a reserve pot to be in store also.

Deborah Sanders and Pablo Castro tied for their 1st round match and had to do a 9th & 10th frame roll-off. Pablo advanced to 2nd round after eliminating Deb from the field. Placing 10th through 16th for $100 after having been elimi-nated after the 1st round were Steve Brode, Deborah Sanders, Ely Cruz, Jason Fowler, Ben Bagaoisan, Marife Catalasan and Kmel Cunanan. Another roll-off was needed to break the 2nd round tie between Pablo Castro (Again) and John Gonzales but this time, John took the lead and advanced to 3rd round. Eliminated after the second round and placing 6th through 9th for $107.50 were Greg Kokanour, Jeanette Chang, Chao Lin and Pablo Castro. Time again for our Horse pick/pot finalists to bat-tle it out during the 3rd round. Payouts were $28 for Second

Seed Cezar Marcella, $47 for John Gonzales, $52 for Tres Catalasan and $73 for Henry Narciso. Experience at its fin-est showed Tres downing Hen-ry 214/178 and Cezar elimi-nating John with 241/217. At 4th and 5th respectively were John Gonzales for $115 and Henry Narcisco It’s now Cezar vs Tres for the Payoffs. Domi-nation was the name of the game as Tres threw 10 strikes for the 4th round. His front 4 was followed by a solid 10 pin which he picked up, then an-other spare for a blowout 7 on the 6th frame. Cezar Marcella threw a great 242 but Tres took off with his 293 game. Cezar Marcella finished 3rd place for $200 He had a Great Day! Nice Bowling Cezar but all scores include Handicap!

Top Seed Michael Kristich meets challenger and Horse winner ABTA Veteran, Tres Catalasan for the Title Match. Michael elected to finish first on the right lane so Tres stepped up and started the match with a hambone. Michael stayed on point with a strike, two 9-spares and another strike on the 4th. Tres failed to convert his washout on the 5th which closed up the gap to a single digit. Both bowlers continued with spares and strikes but Michael got his double on the 9th when his solid 7 received a “love tap” from a pin from the sideboard and he finished with a super 240. Tres, with 196 on the 8th and a strike on the

9th, needed another strike on his first ball on the 10th to win the match. The fat lady sang as Tres threw too high leav-ing pins 3-6-10. Tres finished 2nd place for $500 for his 236 game. Great match from two very competitive bowlers! It’s another first for the ABTA as Michael Kristich earns his ini-tial ABTA Title at West Covi-na Lanes! I thought I knew a lot about bowling …. by Mary LynlyWhen I received the Bowlers Journal special 100th anniversary issue it was impressive without

ever opening the publication – thanks Fran Deken who suggested the cover – black with a huge silver 100 in the center. I usually spot read BJ, my favorite authors, something that grabs my at-tention, opinion page, etc. I have now finished the ENTIRE magazine - twice. As I came to each piece, I thought, “Well, I’ll take a look at the first few paragraphs,” and each time I was drawn through the whole story. The ideology of each writer and their expressions about the sport over the years kept me wanting to read more. Each writer has an inimitable style and manner of express-ing themselves with quotable commentary. In so many cases I had been there but I didn’t know the stories. As I went through each story I began to wonder about the writers and Luby Publishing President Keith Hamilton’s article led me to the mini bios. Everyone who is a devotee of bowling, regular bowler, senior bowler, youth bowler or one who just follows bowling on TV should read this wonderful account of our sport through the eyes of a journalist. It’s been a long time since I have been exhilarated about the story of bowling, let alone the whole publication – Good job BJ.

Catch page 37 – youth tournaments. Lofty goals for youth with an influx of big bucks and it still serves a small segment of youth and parents (for whom we do nothing) who foot the bill.

There’s the revivals like the Hoinke tournament that ran for many years and saw 1280 bowl-ers chase a first prize of $100,000. The PBA has come a long way and had its up and downs but PBA Commissioner Tom Clark says he is not crazy about the World Series of bowling but some interesting formats are working and to him – TV is the name of the game. In a pre-tech time no one would miss Championship Bowling on ABC TV. Today with TV at a premium WSB has an after the fact format – just top three vying for the prize and you may see only two matches for the men and one for the women – if you are lucky. Did you know that “Otis” as in Otis elevators made the first automatic pin setter? Otis! I’ll bet you would have said Brunswick. Reading through the entire magazine makes one realize that being able to attract big sponsors and sustaining TV has always been a problem.

But, there is hope. Having once been the critique guy, Tom Clark now says being at the adminis-trative level you realize the answers are not that easy. Why has bowling been branded as something less than approving by a large group of people? “If true,” says Clark, why do organizations outside the industry, particularly charities, continue to depend on bowling to raise funds critical to their op-erations? Why can’t we get more out of it for bowling? Bowlers give $700,000 to $800,000 to the Susan B. Komen cancer fund when more women die of heart disease. Is it the best marketing plan on earth or have we drunk the coolade? Is Susan B. Komen our sponsor or are we their sponsor? Do you see any recognition for all bowling does for SBK? Don’t think so.

Do you see any movies with bowling in them (other than a cameo) – see Bob Johnson’s list on page 78. Amanda Blake who starred as Miss Kitty in Gunsmoke once owned three bowling alleys. In Johnson’s article about bowling songs I was surprised to see B-O-W-L-I-N-G was not among them. Maybe “Let’s Go bowling” or Bowling song” could be it. We sang it to death.

How much trivia do you know and memorabilia do you have? I have a bunch and I know I must pare some of this down but how can you get rid of things that have a special connection? I can look at something in every room in my house and see things that make me think of a dear departed friend, or one that is still among us and those things are hard to get rid of. Did you know that Earl Anthony had 43 titles, ten majors and six Bowler of the Year awards? Did you also know that he had 43 second place finishes?! Take a look at the Strategies of Top Bowlers on page 112.

Coaching pioneers began with people like Dick Ritger and being the ever doting parents we sent our son John to the very first Dick Ritger Bowling Camp in Issaquah, Washington. He came home 10 pounds lighter and a seriously maimed thumb and fingers. They had bowled non-stop. Future camps were more controlled. There are many high level coaches today but unfortunately they reach only a small percentage of the bowlers. There are always the team bowlers who are in analysis paralysis and that can either harm or help. Eventually, who listens?

The Top 25 TV Bowling Moments – what do you think they are? Page 134. 100 “more” bowl-ing places you must visit before you die. Ten California sites included – you might be surprised?

Unforgettable moments of the PBA Tournament of Champions: One of my memorable thrills was sitting in a hotel room with a few others watching with baited breath when Kelly Kulick took on Champion Chris Barnes and beat him soundly – the only female to ever win the tournament.

LISTS – wonder who won what and when? See “Lists.” Included All-time All America Teams – determined solely on the basis of All America team selections over the 75 years BJ has been nam-ing teams. Walter Ray Williams and Wendy McPherson lead the pack – page 160.

Ever heard of Count Gengler? In the days when pot games were the big draw this fellow was taking home all the money until a proprietor put a slot on the lanes and used lighter pins. Fascinat-ing article – read it. The Rego Park flash - page 220.

Presidents that bowled – this goes way back – page 226. The serious junior bowlers of Califor-nia. Stories were told of the intense love for bowling and bowling in leagues – mostly scratch, with the idea of raising their average getting into a better league. Now practice is not a priority even though it is virtually free to league bowlers. Page 241 – Barb Peltz article about how the “Rockford Five” changed women’s pro bowling forever. Len Nicholson’s article about his solution to one of those insolent bowlers – page 245. Joan Taylor wrote about the Road Warriors, pros who traveled in motor homes and many with their families while mom home schooled the kids – Steve and Candy Cook for one. Of course, had to chronicle Pete Weber – good article by Tom Clark. The Golden Age of TV when bowling destroyed golf, tennis and college basketball in the ratings – page 257 and on page 261 The good, bad, and the ugly of outdoor bowling and then there are Bob Johnson’s interviews with VIP’s and Jim Dressel’s bullet point columns :27 years of random musings.

If you have this BJ issue and haven’t read it – do it. If you don’t have it, send for it. It is a walk back in time and even though I knew of, or knew many of these people and felt in many ways I had been there – I didn’t know the stories.

Mary: I too have re-read a good part of the B.J. 100. Since Bob Johnson was a former editor of the Bowling News, we are very proud of him and his life with the B.J. I’ve enjoyed 60 of those 100 years on the lanes and in the Biz. Love ya’ thanks for the memories - Carol

ageless defending Pba Tournament of champions winner Pete weber shows no signs of slowing down

SEATTLE — At age 51, defending Barbasol PBA Tournament of Champions winner Pete We-ber shows no signs of slowing down and hopes to add yet another chapter to his legendary career by becoming the tournament’s third three-time winner.

The St. Ann, Mo., resident will defend his title against a field of approximately 100 other PBA titlists when Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park, Mich. hosts the PBA’s signature event Jan. 18-26. The 49th Tournament of Champions is a showcase for the organization’s elite players because only PBA title winners are eligible to enter.

The Tournament of Champions will conclude with two hours of live coverage on ESPN on Sunday, Jan. 26, at noon ET.

Weber, a 37-time PBA Tour titlist, wrote yet another chapter in his Hall of Fame career last March when he defeated Australian two-handed star Jason Belmonte, 224-179, to win his second TOC title at Woodland Bowl in Indianapolis. With that win, Weber became the oldest player to win the TOC, the first player to complete the PBA Triple Crown for a second time and he tied bowling legend Earl Anthony for most major PBA titles with 10.

Weber, who was considered one of the professional tour’s power players when he won his first TOC with his unique high back swing back in 1987, is a force on the PBA50 Tour as well as a regular on the “kids tour.”

“I feel like I’m bowling as well as I ever have,” said Weber, who was voted the fourth greatest player in PBA history as part of organization’s 50th anniversary celebration in 2009. “I’m not slow-ing down and have no plans to retire, so they’ll have to put up with me for the foreseeable future.”

In addition to his second TOC title, Weber has won a record five U.S. Open titles and two PBA World Championships, a Triple Crown feat no other bowler has accomplished. He also owns a PBA Touring Players Championship for his other major. The only major title missing from his portfolio is the United States Bowling Congress Masters – a title he’ll pursue in February.

His 2013 TOC title was his 37th, tying him for third place on the PBA all-time titles list with Norm Duke, behind Walter Ray Williams Jr. (47) and Anthony (43).

Even Belmonte had high praise for Weber after losing the title to him.“Pete is the most talented bowler the world has ever seen, and may ever see,” Belmonte said.

“To bowl him in the finals and see him break records like he has broken is really special. If I can achieve half of what he has done by the time my career is over, I’ll be ecstatic.”

As if Weber’s accomplishments needed to be underscored, consider that he’s a force to be reck-oned with at every level of PBA competition.

On the PBA50 (Senior) Tour he earned Rookie of the Year honors winning the USBC Senior Masters and the Treasure Island Resort & Casino Open and had three other top five finishes. He’s also the most successful player in PBA Regional tournament history with a record 51 titles (48 standard and three PBA50 titles).

The final touch to his 2012-13 season came in the PBA League, where he led his New York City WTT Kingpins team, owned by tennis legend Billie Jean King, to victory in the first Elias Cup finals. Weber will return as the team’s franchise player for the second PBA League season when competition gets underway at Thunderbowl Lanes on Saturday, Jan. 25. Weber will be joined by teammates Scott Norton, Stuart Williams, John Szczerbinski, and Jake Peters in defense of the KingPins’ title.

This year, Weber will try to join Mike Durbin and Jason Couch as the third player to win the TOC three times. Durbin won in 1972, ’82 and ‘84; Couch – the only player to win the event three consecutive times – won in 1999 in Overland Park, Kan.; 2000 in Lake Zurich, Ill., and in 2002 in Uncasville, Conn.

Ken odra and roberT snyder

are dominating at Moreno Valley

by Frank WeilerMORENO VALLEY — As

we start the new year the top scratch league at Moreno Val-ley Bowl is being dominated by the doubles team of Ken Odra and Robert Snyder.

Snyder leads the league with a 233 average while Odra is most improved bowler, mov-ing from a 204 average to 229. The duo is averaging 462 in a league with a 425 cap! The result was a first block total of 103 points, 15.5 better than their nearest rival. They are also leading the second block standings.

Snyder is the defending CITRUS BELT scratch All Events Champion and is rec-ognized as one of the top bowl-ers in Moreno Valley. Odra is a longtime scratch competitor who has averaged 200 plus for over a decade.

The four game league boasts a high series of 1068, rolled by DEAN TOWNSEND. Dean’s 300 is the league high game. Citrus Belt Hall of Famer MARK DYER and E.B. DELACOBAS have rolled perfect games as substitutes.

Congratulations Robert and Ken and thanks to the BOWLING NEWS for recog-nizing the accomplishments of Citrus Belt bowlers. Also, I am grateful to WILL JUNE and JAMI SMITH for provid-ing information on these great bowlers.

JASON BELMONTE TO DEBUT GOOGLE GLASS DURING PBA TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS

ALLEN PARK — Bowling fans will be able to observe bowl-ing through the eyes of Australian two-handed star Jason Bel-monte during the Barbasol PBA Tournament of Champions when he wears Google Glass during the opening round of qualifying at Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park, Mich., on Jan. 18.

Google Glass is a “wearable computer” which features a head band frame that includes a digital camera capable of recording 720 dpi video, 16 GB of memory and voice recording technol-ogy. It operates like a hands-free smartphone.

The PBA will record video of one game through the eyes of Belmonte from the first round of TOC qualifying. The Google Glass viewpoint will then be posted on PBA’s exclusive online bowling channel, Xtra Frame so Xtra Frame subscribers can click on the download whenever they want to watch the game as Belmonte saw it.

Belmonte also was wearing Google Glass when he bowled a 300 game during league play in the Wednesday Night Doubles at his family’s Orange Tenpin Bowl in Orange, New South Wales, Australia, a week before Christmas. He recorded the game and posted it on YouTube, where it has been viewed by thousands of YouTube visitors.

BURBANK — What is it about the new year that makes us think of the old years? I somehow thought about scoring. I doubt that any bowler under 35 actually knows how to keep score by hand. It has become a lost skill! As a young teen, I made my pocket money keeping score regularly for certain leagues.

I hauled out the plastic score sheets, the yellow grease pencils and headed down to the telescore machine on the lanes. Basi-cally, it was a glorified overhead projector. No computer, no key-board. Every pin fall had to be recorded with that yellow pencil. Sometimes it got messy...bowlers wanted ‘fences’ to stop their splits which were marked with a circle around the pinfall.

You had to count marks as you went so the teams would know their standing during the game. When I first started, I would earn 50 cents per bowler and if you were lucky, someone would get the score of 111 in the 7th frame which compelled them to buy you a coke.

Beer frames were importantly tracked and stars were added to the top of the frame to signify all team members had struck (striked?). It was actually fun. I learned a lot about the game and about people. How about you? Do you know how to score a game?

IDLE BOWLING ThOUGhTS... Many have wondered whatever happened to one

time boy bowler Bob Purzycki, universally known as Bob Perry. Look for an upcoming book tracing his recollections of a life that brought him notice as one of the best as a bowler to one of the worst in other ways. He went from the pedestal to the pits.

He won many a great battle in bowling, lost badly to alcohol and drugs, was homeless and penniless, then en-riched by purses in the six figure range despite illness leav-ing little hope.

He always seemed to come back, even at age 61.... Every year seems to be the year of something spe-

cial, and if all the plans and promise come true, 2014 will be the year of the better female bowlers, who have stuck with the game on the higher levels for nigh onto a century.

... Halloween has come and done. Did you notice all the bowlers in bowling centers masquerading as bowlers?

... And talking about dressing up properly for bowling one top star had the right advice. “I’ll wear anything, so long as it doesn’t itch.”

... Everyone knows that a “turkey” is the most used term in bowling, a quick way of noting three strikes in a row. How did it come to such lofty status? Years ago during holi-day seasons such as Thanksgiving, bowling centers would conduct so called sweeper tournaments, usually one, two or three games. Special prizes were awarded for three strikes in a row and they ranged from inexpensive bowling items to turkeys, often live ones.

But there was s catch. The lane scoring conditions were difficult and strikes didn’t come easily. And so it was that the bowlers and fans watched closely and when a bowler had two strikes in a row they would shout and remind the bowler, “One more and you got a turkey”.

They liked the sound of turkey and so all in bowling ad-opted it and the “turkey” emerged as the common call for three strikes in a row.

(That would have made Ben Franklin happy because he thought the national bird should be the turkey, not the eagle.)

... Today many tournaments have two frames, one frame or even a single ball to break a tie. TV had a lot to do with the change because of time restrictions. There was one noted rolloff in which the bowlers rolled six game blocks, and at the end of qualifying Steve Nagy and Graz Castel-lano were tied, and it was about 2 .m. and they saw nothing strange about having to bowl a six-game tie breaker for the final finalist spot.

... Some people say they like bowling better than golf because you never lose the bowling ball. That’s not exactly true because on one TV show the ball hit the backboard so hard it went right through and outside the playing area.

... Many ideas and equipment come around after being absent. I don’t see wooden bowling balls coming back but I do see a revival of high topped bowling shoes.

They look so athletic.

Grondin. Cowling, Kolbow Take Route 66 Challenge

by David Yamauchi

NORWALK — The JAT made their annual trip to Keystone Lanes in Norwalk for their Holiday Challenge contested on the Route 66 Oil Pattern. Alumni were invited to bowl along side the juniors and it was nice to see some familiar faces from the past on the lanes!

In the Open Division, Jerome Jordan Jr. and Joe Grondin came out of the gate fast posting 240s to get the day started. Matthew Zweig’s 234 in game 2 put him in the hunt and Wesley Low made up for a slow start with a 258-224 games 2-3. Tyler Salverda posted a 237 to put him in the hunt but Ryan McBride’s 252 in game 4 wasn’t enough to get him back in for a taste of the cut. Leader after 5 was Joe Grondin at +105 chased by Jerome Jordan Jr. at +95 and Matthew Zweig rounded out the blue numbers at +17. Low-to-qualify was Patrick Rodriguez at -11. In match-play it looked like a one-man show as Joe Grondin led the field by 321 pins going 246-248-269-275-220 and 5-0 in match-play; to say he had the best look was an understatement. Wesley Low Jr. excited the crowd with a 287 in Game 2 and Jerome Jordan Jr. stayed consistent to grab the third spot in the rolloff.

In the stepladder, 3rd-seed Jerome Jordan Jr. met 2nd-seed Wesley Low Jr. and breezed by him 279-157 to advance to the ti-tle match. In that match, tournament leader Joe Grondin stepped in and as he did all day just kept striking en route to a 220-145 win and his first JAT title. Congratulations Joe on a great day of bowling!

In the Farm Club, a disappointingly small field took the lanes and in qualifying Dylan Cowling was the closest to challenging a plus score at -9 thanks to a 241 finish to his 5 games. Shane Pierson was 2nd at -53 followed by Kylie Shishima at -91 and Eric Torrence at -128. After 5 games of match-play the tables turned as Eric Torrence took over the top position with a 216 and 224 effort followed by Dylan Cowling who rode a 204-222 into second and into the Championship Match. Cowling and Tor-rence rolled off for the title and it was Dylan Cowling continuing to strike as he took the title 216-154. Congratulations to Dylan on some clutch bowling!

In the Alumni Division, some young and some old came out to test the Route 66 pattern. Scoring was good as the seasoned veterans adjusted to the pattern. Keystone house guy pro shop guy Mikey Villarreal led qualifying at +197 followed by Kevin Jones at +186 and Will Kolbow at +152. Now-Arizonian Mark Myers two-handed his way to +123 and Joshua Tajiri rounded out the top-5 at +122. Low to qualify was Mason Sherman at +60. Sidepots ($56/game) went to Mike Villarreal 289, Kev-in Valmonte 267, Joshua Tajiri 259, 277 and Kevin Jones 279. Match play started off with a bang as Mark Myers shot out 289-253-231 to push to the 3rd spot but Mason Sherman jumped to 2nd with a 234-238-244-233-268 stomping of the pins and Will Kolbow knotted up the top-spot with a strong 267-236-279 fin-ish. In the stepladder finals, 4th seed Joshua Tajiri took out 3rd seed Mark Myers 224-203 in a close match. Tajiri’s luck ran out against 2nd seed Mason Sherman as he was steamrolled 215-135 sending Mason to the title match. In the Championship Match top-seeded Will Kolbow showed why he was the 1-seed striking and striking his way to a 265-218 win at the title. Congratula-tions Will on some nice bowling!

eryone, left me feeling very humble.“Tony was a friend to everyone on and off the lanes. He was

one of those special people who was always trying to improve himself not only as a bowler but as a person.”

The Striking Out Sandy fundraising project benefited those who were affected by the devastating hurricane that ravaged the East Coast in November of 2012. One aspect of the fundraiser encouraged bowling fans to either pay a flat donation or pledge money for every strike Bohn threw during the 2012 World Series of Bowling.

In addition, Bohn treated kids and families affected by the storm to a field trip in June of 2013 that included a tour of a local bowling center, a day of bowling and lunch.

“The smiles we gave to the kids were priceless, you’d think I was Santa Claus,” Bohn said.

Bohn hosts his annual scholarship tournament over the Labor Day weekend. Since its inception 15 years ago, the tournament has awarded nearly $70,000 in scholarships.

“A lot of kids I talk to would like to have bowling as a career but I always tell them that their education should be their prior-ity,” Bohn said. “A good education is something that can’t be taken away from you and it opens doors. Not only my scholar-ship tournament, but all scholarships awarded through bowling have had a very positive impact on the lives of young people.”

Bohn has been a fixture with High Hopes of New Hampshire, a program similar to Make-A-Wish in fulfilling wishes of chil-dren with very serious or life-threatening medical conditions. The High Hopes organization conducts a three-day bowling event that includes clinics, pro-ams and a singles tournament as well as autograph and photo sessions with Tour players that raises funds for the children.

“The credit for that great event really needs to go to (former Tour player and proprietor) Steve Hardy. I’m just honored to be involved with it,” Bohn said. “He puts on an awesome weekend for everyone involved.”

Representative of the many comments included from the nominations received for the award was one from Christine Ruess who said, “The hours that Parker puts into all his community ser-vice areas are too numerous to count. The countless hours are a testament to his devotion to the sport and helping others.”

Typical of Bohn, he deflected a lot of credit aimed at himself and focused instead on contributions others are making on behalf of their communities.

“I’m honored to win the first Tony Reyes Award, but people should know that a lot of PBA players give of their time and effort to get involved with charities at all levels,” Bohn said. “When it comes down to it, we’re blessed to be able to do what we do and if we have the opportunity to put a smile on the faces of those less fortunate, we’re happy to do it.”

RPI Finals, PBA50 Tour Finals & Teen Masters Grand Championship presented by PBA

“Tripleheader” Airs Sunday at NOON on ESPNLAS VEGAS — The PBA World Series of Bowling V returns to ESPN this Sunday at NOON

with three hours of competition concluding the World Series and spotlighting three more events that make the World Series the world’s pre-eminent competitive bowling showcase.

Sunday’s “tripleheader” includes the PBA Regional Players Invitational Finals which serves as a showcase for the PBA’s regional program, where many Tour stars get their start; the PBA50 Tour Finals, for the sport’s stars who reach the age of 50, and the Teen Masters Grand Championship presented by PBA, which features some of the sport’s most talented youth bowlers.

The inaugural RPI Finals will include six players who distinguished themselves in regional competition during the 2013 season. Chris Barnes, Brian Kretzer, Tom Daugherty, Brian LeClair, Dave Beres, and Ben Laughlin earned berths in the finals based on victories in the PBA’s South-west, Central, South, East, Midwest and West/Northwest RPI tournaments, respectively.

Kretzer, Daugherty and Beres will bowl the first one-game semifinal match with Barnes, Laugh-lin and LeClair facing off in the second semifinal. The highest-scoring player in each match will determine the two players who will advance to the championship match.

The PBA50 Finals features three of PBA’s all-time greats. All three continue to compete on both the PBA Tour and its senior circuit, but Hall of Famers Walter Ray Williams Jr., Pete Weber and Amleto Monacelli (who have a combined 103 PBA Tour titles) will compete in the first PBA50 Tour Finals on the basis of leading the PBA50 Tour in competition points during the 2013 season.

Williams, the PBA Tour’s all-time titles leader with 47 wins, is a seven-time PBA Player of the Year and he earned his second consecutive PBA50 Player of the Year crown in 2013. Weber, a 37-time PBA Tour winner, earned PBA50 Rookie of the Year honors in 2013. And 19-time Tour winner Monacelli is coming off a PBA50 Tour campaign that included winning his second consecutive Senior U.S. Open title.

Immediately following the RPI and PBA50 Finals, ESPN will air the Teen Masters Grand Cham-pionship Finals presented by PBA. The finals will feature a rematch between defending champion Greg Young of Viera, Fla., and last season’s runner-up, Ashley Dunn of Palmdale, Calif., in a best-of-two-game match with the winner earning a $64,000 scholarship.

DOWNEY — LOS ALTOS TROPHY continues their award winning ways, grabbing four prized points from KEYSTONE LANES. All eight teamsters were just frame-fillers. The strike train never pulled into the station to kick up the scores. High series and game on the pair belonged to Derek Lee 235/673.

The THREADWORKS/SYSCO head butt produced a leap forward for THREADWORKS. They will be matched against LOS ALTOS this coming week (week 6) with the hope of going on to win round three.

Checking the “percentage” of a chance to win a round is a bowlers brain teaser. Sometimes a little addition in the NINTH frame would result in a few more wins too. I love listening to Monday night analyzing the rest of the week!!!

Looks like only LOS ALTOS, THREADWORKS, KEY-STONE and BOWLERS DEPOT will be a topic of conver-sation this week.

Sol Cericos tossed the high game Monday 268 but wasn’t in the pots. Greg Neuer, second high, rolled a 258, not in the pots.

Eddie Van Daniker pumped his 257 into a real mon-eymaker; dragging in the Game Two pot, the Financial Advisors Pot, and the clean 30 pot. 714 on the long oil! Way to go!

Debbie Abahazy has been steady for 48 games, av-eraging 185. She topped the girls with her 239/602, even topped Lee Liu (484) that won the A.B.T. 2 weeks ago! (Only kidding Lee.)

The league average dropped less than a pin. Now that the players have figured out the game, the playing field will change. What IS the next pattern???

One last comment — A DIFFERENT LOOK CABINETS “clobbered” THE PROFESSIONAL APPROACH-$$ for a point — 743 over 735. A mighty effort by the last place team. Take heart, a new chance is coming!
