ATTENDANCENew Arizona Department of Education Attendance Rule:The Arizona Department of Education (ADE) has recently released new guidelines for absences. Any absence after the 18th absence for the school year will be considered unexcused, with the exception of Chronic Illness absences*. As always, if a student has 10 consecutive school days of unexcused absences, they will be withdrawn and you will need to re-enroll them. Please remember that it is very important to continue to call in all absences, even if they are to be marked as unexcused. This is so that we know, that you are aware of the absence. If you have any questions feel free to contact the school office.

*Any Chronic Ill absences are still excused even if after the 18 day mark.

Automated Attendance CallsBeginning the week of August 15, 2016, Boulder Creek Elementary will begin sending Automated Attendance Calls for students who have an unexcused absence.

Please continue to call the school attendance line and leave a message as soon as you know your child will be absent or late to school. (480-507-1404 Option 1)

These automated calls will only be sent to parents who have NOT called the school to excuse their child's absence. The automated system calls those identified as Guardian (mother, father, step-parent, foster parent, grandparents, etc) in Infinite Campus. It will use the home number and cell phone number for these folks as well as send them an email.

Attendance Line: 480-507-1404 Option 1

TRANSPORTATION CHANGES..........

• If your child’s transportation home from school changes, please call the front office no later than 2:00pm to ensure that the message gets to your student.

• Calls received later than 2:00pm makes it difficult to ensure your student gets the information.

FITNESS AT HOME - A MESSAGE FROM MR. STARKS, PE TEACHER

It is recommended that kids receive 60 minutes of activity daily, most of which should be aerobic. Look for a new exciting activity every month in the Boulder Creek News Letter.

SkateboardingSkateboarding is a fun activity that doesn't seem at all like exercise. While cruising around the neighborhood, kids build balance, coordination, strength and endurance. It's an activity kids can do on their own, with friends, or alongside mom and dad.

Learning how to skateboard is also a great way to teach kids patience, perseverance and tenacity. It may take a while to get the hang of, but once your child is up on that board, he or she may never want to get off.

Make sure your little skateboarder has a helmet, knee and elbow pads and adult supervision.

Have fun and stay healthy!

A Note from the Nurse's office:! Welcome back to another year Boulder Bulldogs. As we start the new school year here are a few things to keep in mind. September 1, 2016 is the final deadline for immunization records to be turn in to the health office for those who received letters of inadequate immunization. Final letters went out Aug. 11h. As required by state law, students who are not fully immunized will not be able to attend school starting September 1 until a record showing required shots has been received. If you have not turned in updated records please do so as soon as possible. Tdap and Meningococcal are required for students who are 11 years old and in 6th grade. If your child is new to Boulder or you have a child in Kindergarten and did not provide a record or provided an incomplete record at the time of registration and got a notice it means the record from your child’s previous school has not arrived and/or we still do not have a complete verified record on file. You will need to provide the record. Every effort has been made to get the records from all sources available. All students need to have a verified record of completed immunizations or a valid exemption form signed on file. If you have questions regarding shots or shot records please call the health office. These requirements are in place by state law and designed to help keep all children healthy. Parents, if your child has not had the vaccines, there are various clinics available or you can make an appointment with your family physician. A list of clinics was attached to the notices sent home.

! Gilbert Schools has a strict policy when it comes to medications. Students are not allowed to carry medications on their person, or in backpacks except those for life threatening conditions such as anaphylaxis. All medications, prescribed and over the counter i.e. vitamins, Tylenol, and Tums to name a few, need to come through the health office and brought in by a parent/responsible adult. Herbal supplements and essential oils are treated the same as medications. If the medication is for life threatening conditions and you want your student to carry the medication with them, the medication still needs to be checked in with the health office and the proper paperwork completed. Please do not send medications with your child to school. If your child needs to take medication at school, please contact the health office. This policy is for the safety of all students.

! Safety is a priority for all students. Students love to wear flip-flops to school. Please keep in mind that feet and ankles are vulnerable to injury through scrapes and twists while wearing flip-flops. Research also shows wearing flip flops can lead to foot problems later due to the lack of support. Flip flops, even new ones break very easily. Parents will be called to bring another pair of shoes for your child if their flip flop breaks. Remember flip-flops are not the best choice of shoe for school.

! Through out the year students have accidents, find mud or need a change of clothes for any number of reasons. I try to have clothes available for these untimely accidents. If your child needs to borrow a change of clothes, please wash the items borrowed and return the borrowed items as soon as possible. If you know your child is prone to accidents, it helps your child if you send a change in his/her backpack. If you have clothes your child has outgrown, please consider donating to the Health Office especially smaller sizes (6-10) in both boys and girls.

! If you have any questions regarding immunizations, medications, screenings or have any updates on your child's medical or health needs please call the health office.

Healthy kids are my business. Have a great year. Jane Xavier, RN! ! ! ! 480-507-1404 x 306

Welcome back Boulder Creek Families!

My name is Ashley Fortune and I am proud to be serving as your school social worker FULL time this year! Some of you may remember I was here part time last school year. My role on campus is to provide emotional, behavioral, social, and prevention support services.

Some of the areas that I am able to help with are family changes, grief, friendship, conflict resolution, organizational skills, focus and impulse control, anxiety, attendance, behavior, depression, somatic complaints, and financial difficulties. I work with students individually or in small groups, and will also be going into the classrooms this year to teach social skills through a program called Second Steps. We received a donation of backpacks and school supplies, so if you or someone you know could use some, come see me! Just a reminder to reapply for Free and Reduced lunch if you haven’t already, here is the link:https://www.schoollunchapp.com/Terms.aspx?host=gilbertschools.schoollunchapp.com&apply=1 If you would like to contact me directly, call (480) 507-1404 x303 or e-mail me at [email protected]
