PROGRAM NOTESDU BOIS: Fanfare (2008)

A fanfare, originating as far back as the Middle Ages, is a flourish of brass instruments that historically marked the entrance of royalty and celebrates something majestic. The use of brass instruments, especially trumpets, is a distinctive feature of a fanfare. This fanfare opens with a large, B-minor field of sound played by all instruments, which moves quickly into a jubilant trumpet call.

However, I also wanted to embrace a different nature of a fanfare, which here represents the pain and suffering of many Americans during this country’s ongoing struggle for equality for all. The middle section of the piece settles into a contemplative, more sorrowful atmosphere, and here you may notice material inspired by We Shall Overcome, a gospel hymn written by Rev. Charles Tindley in 1901, which was later adapted by Zilphia Horton, Guy Carawan, and Pete Seeger, which became anthem of the civil rights movement. In 1963, singer Joan Baez notably led a group in song of more than 300,000 persons during Martin Luther King, Jr.'s March on Washington.

During the time I was writing this fanfare, just before the inauguration of the first African American to hold the office of the President of the United States, I was deeply affected by the musical presence of We Shall Overcome. It was in celebration of one of the most important events in the history of our nation, and with hope for overcoming racism, that I wrote Fanfare for the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra. But now, in 2017, when the legitimization and normalization of hatred is more ubiquitous than ever, this Fanfare has new resonance as it stands against intolerance, oppression, hatred, and the eradication of human decency and truth.

ELGAR: Cello Concerto in E Minor, op. 85 (1919)

Commonly hailed as the quintessential “English composer” of his time, the reality of Sir Edward Elgar’s musical career falls far from the beaten path. Born in 1857, the son of a Worcester music shop proprietor, Elgar’s skills at piano, violin, and theory were all encouraged from a young age. The young musician’s budding talents would not prove enough to secure

an immediate place in the British and international scene. After much perseverance, Elgar’s breakthrough would come suddenly in 1899 when he penned an overnight sensation, the Enigma Variations. Contemporary critic Michael Kennedy explained that the Cello Concerto seems “to belong to another age, another world...the simplest of all Elgar’s major works...also the least grandiloquent.” The previous penchants of Edwardian sensibility would swiftly have come to sound inadequate and backward, irrevocably lost to the atrocities of the Great War. Written in the aftermath (1918–1919), the Cello Concerto is undeniably attached to this pivotal moment in history. From dour and uncertain origins, Elgar, deeply affected by the tremendous loss of life, fostered a tone that Yeats had noted before the war as “wonderful in its heroic melancholy.” Lady Elgar detected in her diary a newly somber quality in her husband’s music, “which should be in a war symphony.” Fatefully, only a year later, the death of Lady Elgar would prove a crushing blow for the aging composer, the personal loss rendering the composer almost entirely musically mute for his remaining 14 years. Despite these musical merits, Elgar’s Cello Concerto was destined to live in obscurity, no doubt due to the poor quality of the 1919 premiere. But from the cello section, a 19-year-old Sir John Barbirolli would remember the experience fondly, going on to do much in reviving the autumnal concerto’s popularity when conducting a deft 20-year-old Jacqueline du Pré as soloist. These efforts resulted in a landmark 1965 recording that has helped not only to place Elgar’s concerto firmly in the cello repertoire, but has opened a window into a lost era to adoring audiences in halls across the world.

—Clifton Ingram (M.M. '14, composition)

STRAUSS: Ein Heldenleben, op. 40 (1898)

Having premiered on March 3, 1899, Richard Strauss’ tone poem Ein Heldenleben is an homage to the young composer’s achievements and tribulations. By the time Strauss composed Heldenleben at the age of 34, he had held various conducting appointments at German opera houses and had produced a substantial amount of compositions. His previous

experimentations with tone poems, including Don Juan, Also Sprach Zarathustra, and Don Quixote, presented single movement symphonic works that illustrate a central theme, such as literary, mythical, or philosophical ideas. For Heldenleben, Strauss chose an autobiographical standpoint, portraying himself as the archetypal hero struggling against and overcoming his antagonists. Six sections of rich orchestration and grandiose instrumentation present what Strauss calls, “a more general and free ideal of great and manly heroism." The motif of the “The Hero” enters with a sweep of the lower strings and triumphant touting of the brass. The “Hero’s Adversaries” converge upon him with shrill chromatisms in the woodwinds and parallel fifths in the lower brass. They pester the melancholic hero until the horn, playing his motif, drowns them out. The violin solo of “The Hero’s Companion,” a representation of Strauss’ wife, raises the hero’s spirits with flirty and capricious cadenzas. The violin dances around the orchestra until they finally intertwine in a glorious love scene. His confidence bolstered, the hero throws himself into “The Hero at Battle,” heralded by offstage trumpets, boisterous brass, and militaristic percussion. Assisted by previously heard motifs joined in counterpoint, the hero defeats his critics. He then enters a state of introspection in “The Hero Works of Peace,” represented by interwoven quotations from Strauss’ previous tone poems. The hero achieves inner peace as the violin and horn accompany him into transcendence in “The Hero’s Retreat from this World and Completion.” —Isabelle Zeledón (M.M. ’17, opera)
